Fundación Leer signed a license agreement with Reading is Fundamental, Inc.
(RIF), an organization that works since 1966 in the field of reading promotion. In
this way, it managed to apply its programs in Argentina, making all the necessary
adjustments to adapt them to local reality.
In 2004 Fundación Leer started to work jointly with the Open Society Institute
to implement in Argentina its programs Step by Step and Reading and Writing
for Critical Thinking in order to improve school performance through teaching
strategies that promote active learning. These programs include families in the
educational proves of children, and fosters democratic value at school.
From its very beginnings, Fundación Leer has developed its own programs whose
goal is to respond to specific needs and problems identified in our country.

Prepared for Life is a program aimed to children
between 9 and 12 years old that seeks to contribute
to develop the social skills necessary they need in
different fields of life. It includes the distribution
of books related to the topics of the project for the
children to choose and carry home. There is also a
Book Event organized together with the exhibition
of two samples of the project.
“We were all filled with emotion, it was so significant to have been able to
deliver the books to each child in the Book Event. For some of them it was their
first book and their faces showed it. It was incredible to see them sitting and
reading. In some way this is a change in these children ‘attitude towards books
and literature in general. Besides, we are very happy with the work performed
with the Prepared for Life manuals as we could include it more easily in the
planning.” Principal of School Nº 24, Zárate, Buenos Aires.

Reading Corners in Libraries intends to create
a space specially aimed for children and young
people to read, basing on the fact that reading is
a key activity for their development. Consequently
it proposes the creation of Reading Corners in
those places to which children and their families
attend regularly. Such places give the opportunity
of gathering different members of the community
together and inviting them to participate in reading
promotion proposals, through activities related to
several cultural expressions: storytelling meetings,
plays, puppet shows, film screenings, conferences
and debates about hot topics.

accompany children as they grow up. Since we started to use the space, we saw that
they are more active, interact among them and with us. The games and books make
them communicate and express what they feel much better. It is a great opportunity
for the mother’s tool, as they learn many things through the workshops and they
are more interested in coming to the center and share activities with their children.
Some mothers read together with them. It is so exciting. We are so grateful for the

“In the first place we would like to say that the workshop we are carrying out in the Reading
Corner is a very pleasant experience that will help us greatly to share so many things with
children. Collaborating with such a beautiful and positive experience for the children and
the neighborhood, with very nice people who are so willing to give affection and transmit
their wishes to learn, makes us feel very well. It is a new experience for us as it is useful
to grow, know and share even more. They learn so do we. We could see that children
are delighted when they listen a story and receive sheets and pencils to paint. They copy
drawings from the books and we analyzed together everything they do. They are very active
when playing with objetcs, they like to sing too and ask to do so. As we have little and older
kids, one of take charge of the younger ones and the other of the older to make learning
easier according to their age. We want to go on helping and sharing together with them and

With the support and collaboration of Publishing
House Albatros, Fundación Leer participated once
again in the 38th International Book Fair in Buenos
Aires. As it does every year the Fundación made its
programs known to all visitors as a new opportunity
of disseminating its projects and thus joining more
people to its goal of building a literate and reading
Argentina.
Thanks to the support of the Fondo Metropolitano
de la Cultura, las Artes y las Ciencias, Fundación
Leer set up a Reading Corner in the main building
of the Buenos Aires Botanical Garden and also a
mobile Reading Corner to go over outdoors spaces
and share the reading of books together with the
visiting children and parents. The Botanical Garden
received 100 new books for the mobile Reading
Corner and 200 new books for this new literacy
space located in the historical building. Additionally,
there was a Reading Celebration Day during which
the children chose a book to carry home and start
to build their own library.

• 10th National Reading Marathon in different
points of the country.
“Being in a stand or accompanying several groups of students to go over
the reading posts and share the children´ expressions of surprise and
happiness when they listen to a story, or participate in some activity,
or simply take a quick walk together along the Zoo was extremely
rewarding. I feel so close to the Fundación because I am an eager reader
and a defender and promoter of reading. I started this task together
with my children and now they have grown up I try to share some of my
enthusiasm with this beloved Fundación.” Nora Bozzi, volunteer.

As part of the Solidarity´s Day, 160 volunteers from
Santander Río participated in the program Let´s
Read and Play! The company employees read and
played with the children from the institutions that
participated in the Reading Marathon program.
The volunteers visited five schools in the provinces of
Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Chaco, Santiago del Estero and
Santa Fe. Each group of corporate volunteers visited
the school where their plant is located to share reading
aloud stories during the celebration of the Children´s
Day.
Solidarity Day - Santander Río
“the most significant moment, no doubt, was to see the
children´s surprise when they entered the room for the
first time. During the day, some of the children come to
us to ask what we were doing, they reacted with joy and
emotion, although they did not receive an immediate
response.” Florencia, volunteer from American Express.
“Besides the moment of reading the dramatized and the children´s face
collaborating in the play, the most important instance is when everybody
expresses their wishes to help, the team work, the contact with the institution.
I find it difficult to describe one moment in particular because I was lucky to
participate actively in many circumstances and I am happy for everything I lived
through. It is an extremely rewarding experience and I am looking forward to
participating in some other day.” Laura, from American Express.

Perspectives
Fundación Leer envisions the year 2013 as a year full
of challenges and new projects, during which we will
strengthen our action lines in the priority areas we have
been working in the recent years: we will progress on
the creation of new Reading Corners to offer children
from different kinds of institutions the access to books
and the possibility of choosing new books to carry
home and thus be able to establish a positive bond with
reading at home.
From now on we will lie special emphasis on on-line projects
as there are increasingly more schools and teachers that
have incorporated new technologies to their daily work.
We strongly believe in the value of this teaching resource
and are willing to take advantage of its whole potential
to go into our educational task in depth. In this sense,
through our alliance with the ISSA- International Step by
Step Association we will offer a training course aimed to
enhance the training of pre-school teachers.
Additionally, we will go on supporting the training of
teachers so that they can incorporate new strategies for
promoting reading, reading comprehension and critical
thinking in children. We look forward to continue
working together with both the Ministries of Education
and Social Development throughout the country in
order to enhance the early education of children, as
we strongly believe that it is in the first years of life
when there is a window of opportunities to support the
present and future development of children.
Once again we will make a special effort to achieve that
the 11th National Reading Marathon, that will take place
on September 27, 2013, go on summoning institutions
from all over the country and joining us together in favor
of reading and books, through a campaign that unites
those who, like us, believe that a literate and reading
Argentina is possible.
