Dear Parishioners,
Catholic or not, those concerned with the present state of the environment should seriously consider reading Pope Francis' recent encyclical letter, "On Care for Our Common Home" (Laudato
Si). The letter provides a thorough review of the challenges facing the health of our planet and repeatedly addresses non-Catholics, non-Christians and the non-religious, as we all have a stake in
these matters. Although it is the length of a short book, the letter's generally simple language makes
it accessible to interested readers.
Encyclical letters are among the most authoritative forms of communication popes utilize.
Originally designed as letters to be circulated among the bishops of the Catholic Church, encyclicals have come to be addressed to increasingly wider audiences.
This particular letter is addressed to all people, simply as inhabitants of the Earth, and frequently asserts the need for
dialogue among all people of good will.
Religiously, the letter is concerned with explaining the relationship among God, humanity and the natural world. The
letter calls Catholics and all Christians to view environmental issues as matters of moral concern. It also observes that
conviction that cares for the Earth is a moral issue that can be arrived at regardless of religious persuasion.
Catholic, Christian, religious or not, the letter provides an important opportunity for broadening conversations on environmental stewardship and working together for effective solutions.
One criticism being raised is that the letter gives few clear instructions for action. But doing so would be against the
letter's conviction that effective solutions will arise through dialogue and cooperation among groups and individuals and
with differing concerns and influence.
The environment is a shared responsibility and requires shared effort. The letter proposes that there is no single right
way to deal with the challenges that face us, but any effective response will be the result of collaboration.
The environmental issues facing our communities are unique to the places in which we are located. This is why Pope
Francis tells us that solving environmental challenges requires "community conversion." As members of a specific local
community, it is our duty to utilize the connections we share to bring us together. We need to value the things we hold in
common, from natural resources to occupations, religious convictions and the local histories that shape our communities.
"On Care for Our Common Home" raises serious and challenging questions while inviting all people to work together
for meaningful responses. Francis calls for a "new dialogue," I hope Catholics and non-Catholics alike will take interest
in the document and initiate the conversations its calls for.
In light of that I invite you to attend the upcoming forum and discussion on this important document, hosted by St.
Mary’s Environmental Stewardship Committee. This will take place at Seelos Hall, on Thursday, October 22 at 7pm. To
read Laudato Si, go to the Vatican website or see the following online: http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/
encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html#_ftn67 I close with one of the two prayers
Pope Francis ends his encyclical with:
A prayer for our earth
All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.
You embrace with your tenderness all that exists.
Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.
Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.
O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.
Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it,
that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.
Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.
Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation,
to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light.
We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. AMEN
God Bless Us All

"Footsteps in the New World," by
Lisa Taylor Keuhlen, a graduate of
St. Mary's High School in Annapolis,
is a story that describes what it might
have been like to establish a
homestead in 17th century Maryland.
Adhering to historical accounts of the
founding of Maryland, fact and fiction
merge to become an inspiring tale of
a young man's dream of land,
freedom, and family. Thomas
Sympson traveled from Scotland to
Maryland in 1635, seeking religious
freedom. His story may give us heart
to pursue our own American dream.
Available in the History section of the

APPALACHIAN COLLECTION
Wonders never cease.
When St. Mary's
parishioners see a need, there is no stopping their
generosity. Our next drive to aid our friends in
Appalachia will take place this Wed., Sept. 30
from 8:30-12:00 noon in Seelos Hall, during the
Ranger Rosary workshop. Please bring boxes
and bags with tax-deductible clothing (all sizes for men,
women, children, infants), household items, warm
bedding (all types) for a cold winter ahead, toys (dolls
too) and any special gifts for Christmas. Also colorful
calendars brighten their homes. We ask that all
contributions are clean and in good shape to show our
respect. For information call Theresa Cisneros at 410263-8837 or Marilyn Voss at 410-263-5525. As Anne,
our Appalachian friend, puts it, "There are enough folks
living in the nooks and crannies right here in our area
that need a great deal of help." Based upon our
previous collections, we know that St. Mary's will again
help a number of folks living in a number of needy
areas in a generous and meaningful way.
Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Summer Food Drive - Thank You
The parishioners who supported the summer food
drive with their generous donations, and the volunteers
who worked to make it the success it was, clearly
demonstrated that they understood and lived the direction
given in the August 30 reading: James 1:22 Be doers of
the word and not hearers only. With enthusiasm the
volunteers handed out the empty grocery bags at Masses
the weekend of August 22 & 23 and the parishioners
looked for the grocery bags in order to purchase the
needed items. (We thank Graul’s Market for their
continued support of the St. Vincent de Paul Society
projects and the donation of the grocery bags.) The next
weekend (August 29 & 30) the volunteers received the
donations and transported them to the Light House
Shelter. Several parishioners volunteered as a family unit,
using this as a bonding time while providing more workers
to the project. Some parishioners made a special trip to
the Church, to deliver their forgotten donations, or to
deliver to the St. Mary’s Church building when they had
attended Mass at St. John Neumann. We thank them for
that extra effort. Every donation is much appreciated and
greatly needed. We do want to note that some
parishioners were extremely generous, donating several
cases of canned goods or several bags of groceries – and
two individuals/families each donating 12 bags of
groceries. Monetary donations were also received, with
gratitude. The donations that came in on August 29 and
30 will feed many of our neighbors.
Excerpt from a letter received by Fr. Tizio from
the Light House - Thank you for the incredible
generosity of the parishioners of St. Mary’s and the
St. Vincent de Paul Society fro the collection and
delivery of 431+ filled bags of groceries to the Light
House. We appreciate the tireless efforts of Elaine
Larison and Sam Davies, Graul’s Market for the
grocery bags and the many other volunteers who
helped to make the drive successful, benefitting
those in our community most in need.

Querida Parroquianos,
http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html#_ftn67 . Termino
Padre Tizio
