IATEFL Conference in UK
Como parte del programa de capacitación a nuestro staff, Gina García, jefa (i) del BRITÁNICO Monterrico y Gloria Rosales,
subjefa del BRITÁNICO San Miguel, viajaron al Reino Unido y nos cuentan su experiencia.
My UK experience

Gina García
My studies at Bell International in London were nothing but wonderful. This course also
made me realise how important developing my language skills is. Teachers and staff at Bell
were also amazed by the quality of the students sent from Peru and hope we go back one
day.
I was also present at the launch of the SPEAK OUT book, sponsored by Pearson. It was a
terrific opportunity to see some familiar faces and to get to know other people involved
in the language teaching field. I was able to talk to the authors, Frances Eales, JJ Wilson,
Antonia Clare and Steve Oakes who shared their experiences when writing the book and
the approach it has to help students in their learning process.
Finally, the IATEFL conference was the event that delighted me most for so many different
reasons. Being around other teachers, teacher trainers, writers, presenters and language
school directors. made me realise that we may come from different backgrounds but
we share a unique and challenging “hobby”: teaching. Attending presentations by Peter
Grundy, Peter Watkins, Sue Palmer and Jeremy Harmer, to mention a just few, encouraged me to continue sharing my experiences
with colleagues at the BRITÁNICO as they did with us. On our journey to becoming better teachers of English, we need to grow
professionally and share everything we learn as well.

My IATEFL experience


When you are told that you will travel to the UK to attend an important international
conference called IATEFL in which teachers from around the world will participate, it makes
you feel really enthusiastic and eager to get there as soon as possible. And then the day
came, after almost two weeks in London which was time to get familiar with the British
lifestyle, we headed to Brighton, an amazing town south of London.
The Queen of Britain and the Duke of Edimburgh,
Madame Tussaud museum, London.
I still remember that I couldn’t believe my
eyes to see that the beach was really near the
conference hall and the wonderful and sunny
weather made our stay totally unforgettable.
The sessions started on a Friday; for four
days, I attended many workshops, talks and
interesting projects based on different teaching
topics, which gave me the opportunity to share
my experience not only with teachers but also
with teacher trainers from other countries.
It also was a good chance to practise the

Being told that I was travelling to England to study a language refresher
course at Bell International as well as attending the launching session
of SPEAK OUT, a book presented by Pearson, and the 45th IATEFL
conference in Brighton was such a surprise and an experience I had not
ever imagined I would live.

such as Sue Palmer, Catherine Walter, Peter Grundy and Brian Patten, whose final plenary was the most enchanting and inspiring.
Needless to say, it was an enriching and rewarding experience to have been there and learning much more about new trends and
the wide use of technology in classrooms. Thanks to the BRITÁNICO and Pearson for this stunning opportunity that will take a long
time to forget.

‘Why did you decide to come to Peru?’ This is the question I’m usually asked by my students,
and my response is ‘Why not?!’ Peru is a patriotic country, as I’ve witnessed recently with their
involvement in Copa America and Fiestas Patrias, which I think is great. I’m enjoying learning
more about the culture and traditions as well as exploring the country! The weather here in Lima
has been colder than I expected, so I’m definitely looking forward to the summer!

Sesiones académicas en centros
Como parte de las actividades relacionadas
con la Convención Anual de Profesores, los
días 29 y 31 de agosto, nuestros profesores
pudieron asistir a sesiones académicas a
cargo de una de las expositoras participantes
—Kate Pickering— y una expositora invitada
—Idolina Camargo—, ambas de la editorial
Macmillan. Estas sesiones permiten una
mejor interacción entre los participantes y
los especialistas invitados, ya que se tocan
temas más puntuales acordes a los intereses
de nuestros profesores.
FCE y CAE Exam Practice Partially Online (PO)
A finales de octubre se inician los cursos FCE y CAE Exam Practice en la modalidad semipresencial: una parte del curso se
desarrolla vía Internet (online) dando a los participantes la oportunidad de organizar sus horarios y lugar de estudio, y la otra parte
es presencial (face-to-face) y se desarrolla en las instalaciones del BRITÁNICO.
Los cursos semipresenciales están
especialmente diseñados para las
personas que no pueden asistir a
clases diarias en un horario fijo, pero
requieren que los participantes tengan
buen dominio de computación y sepan
organizarse. Esta modalidad se ofrece
además de los cursos Exam Practice
presenciales programados en los centros
de enseñanza y que cuentan con sus
propios materiales.

Estamos cumpliendo en este mes nuestro tercer aniversario.
Contamos con la presencia de la, en ese entonces, Embajadora del
Reino Unido en el Perú, Ms Catherine Nettleton, para nuestra inauguración.
Al primer año habíamos aumentado nuestro número de alumnos
en un 448%.
Somos el tercer centro con mayor cantidad de alumnos.
Somos uno de los centros donde se toman los exámenes internacionales FCE, CAE, IELTS.
El mes pasado tuvimos 2,913 usuarios en nuestro SAC.
Enseñamos a niños desde los 4 años en nuestro programa de Infants hasta alumnos que se preparan para tomar el examen CAE
(Certificate in Advanced English).

Entusiasmo y despliegue de habilidades fueron las características que
presentaron los alumnos que participaron en talleres de manualidades
que el BRITÁNICO les ofrece mes a mes. Muchos de los participantes
lograron producir bellas obras aun cuando antes no habían tenido la
oportunidad de practicar ningún tipo de arte manual.

Con un atractivo programa visitamos diversos centross
de enseñanza. Entre ellos, San Juan de Lurigancho
y Pueblo Libre, donde los estudiantes pintaron y
decoraron con diversas técnicas un práctico perchero
de trupán para múltiples usos. En el BRITÁNICO
Pueblo Libre también se dictó un taller de pintura
en trupán, pero esta vez trabajaron un portaCD con
relieves y aplicaron pincelada seca, veladuras, entre
otros, para obtener un delicado producto. En el
BRITÁNICO Los Jardines tuvimos una sesión de bisutería
y los asistentes confeccionaron un fino juego de pulsera
y aretes con cuentas de madreperla y murano. Los
talleres de repostería siempre causan expectativa y esta
vez no fue la excepción: en el BRITÁNICO San Miguel
los alumnos intervinieron en la preparación del postre
tiramisú y disfrutaron intensamente con la degustación.

My tell a story experience

Paola Lázaro Illatopa, San Isidro student, Basic 12 7.40 p.m.
I was on my way to the board to present the project that Ms
Ursula Vásquez assigned to the class when I started to remember
how I felt my first day of class at the BRITÁNICO, the feeling of
being nervous and a little bit frightened as everyone feels when
you do something for the first time. As soon as I started to talk
and present my story, all those fears were gone and I had a great
performance. After the feedback and applause, I felt very pleased
with my performance.
I know that it was all because of the skills that I’ve learnt here
at the BRITÁNICO like speaking fluently and expressing my ideas
clearly, also the awesome methodology that teachers applied
motivated me and made me want to be better every day. That’s
why I’m saying to all of you that when you speak in public, you
shouldn’t feel intimidated, it was an incredible experience. I’m sure you’ll feel satisfied in the end.


On August 26th, there was a workshop offered by Ms. Deborah
Brett called “The Road to Success?- Education in Britain in
the 21st Century”. During this session, students could easily
explore and learn more about the British education system
and the similarities and differences with the Peruvian one.
They started by having a quick look at the subjects which are
considered compulsory, the most popular universities, famous
people who studied there, how important the extracurricular
activities are, and at the end they were taught the most
popular school rhymes which they played enthusiastically, an
opportunity not to be missed!.

¿Quisieras tener más material para practicar tu inglés? ¿Te
gustaría mejorar la pronunciación de las palabras que estás
aprendiendo en clase o ver nuevamente los videos? La
combinación del uso del CD-ROM y tu libro New Cutting
Edge es muy útil para reforzar lo aprendido, por eso, el mes
pasado en Camacho, tuvimos una presentación sobre este
material. En estas líneas compartimos la impresión de una de
nuestras asistentes sobre la presentación:
“La charla del CD–ROM me pareció muy didáctica e
interesante, ya que la profesora Romilly de Buck nos mostró
una variedad de ejercicios de pronunciación que podemos

El miércoles 31 de agosto se llevó a cabo la Ceremonia de Graduación de los alumnos del curso English for Professionals 9 de la
empresa Mota-Engil Perú, que contó con la participación de las autoridades de la empresa, así como de los alumnos del programa.
Actualmente, 39 colaboradores de esta empresa vienen llevando con éxito el programa English for Professionals en la modalidad In
House. Este programa está dirigido a empresas e instituciones que, conscientes de las necesidades del profesional de hoy, deseen
capacitar a su personal con cursos que le permitan comunicarse efectivamente en inglés en situaciones cotidianas de trabajo.

English for Emails


It is said that having a good speaking ability may result in a good piece of
writing, but experience shows it does not always work this way. At External
Clients, we feel committed to our students’ continuous professional
development in the English language. That is why the three-day workshop
“English for Emails” was held at our premises during the third week of
September. During these days all of us, students and teacher, could share an
enriching experience because not only did students learn strategies and tips
to deal with their everyday emailing duty but they also shared their own prior
knowledge and participated actively during the whole workshop. By the end
of the sessions, formal and informal registers for writing emails became more
than familiar to students and I am sure they can still recall common abbreviations, even the fun emoticons!
Every detail was considered so that students could benefit from well-structured sessions which combined both the effective
support of a text and new technological tools such as the MIMIO Interactive Board. Needless to say, the results were really
satisfactory. Thanks to all the participants for their enthusiasm and motivation, key elements for making every learning
opportunity a memorable and meaningful one.

We are really into music, and you?


Teaching young people is always a challenging task for teachers because
their way of thinking is constantly moving on and we as teachers have got
to be part of that tremendous change. As far as I am concerned, one of the
things that is changing with them is music, which at first I found very hard.
But I had to get up-to-date with the latest trends in music and I went about
finding out more about it. Days later, I was ready to talk and teach my junior
12 students something about music. When I was in class I realised how much
they loved music and they were very interested in it as well.
On top of that, music runs in most of their families; they sing, play a musical
instrument and even in their spare time they play in their school bands. That
was terrific, we learnt a lot from each other. Then I reflected on this and
encouraged them to prepare a project on this topic and they immediately
agreed. They downloaded videos with lyrics to fill in and sang, made colourful
posters and did research in order to make speeches. Everything went right. I
praised them on what they had done. We had such a great time.
Peruvian dances


One of the most important artistic expressions
of our country is dancing. Every dance has
its own history and meaning which is not
only shown by dancers’ movements but
by their colourful outfits. A group of J7
students investigated and prepared posters
about typical dances of different parts of
our country as a part of their course. Poster
designs were imaginative, colourful and very
well diagrammed. Moreover, they realized
there are plenty of reasons to feel proud of
being Peruvian!

“Great! I can’t wait to do it!” my K03 course students
chorused in unison when I announced that they were to
make a poster describing their favourite celebrity and that
they were going to be on display! I was a hundred percent
certain that they would all do their best and I wasn’t let
down. They were all joy and pride whenever they saw people
reading their work. As I write this, I recall what Francis Eales
so insightfully showed us in this 17th Teacher’s convention
about feedback being a double-edged sword that could
either de-motivate you for life or make you feel grand. In
this case, seeing people compliment their work boosted my
students’ confidence in English no end and it just proves
those wise words true. Congratulations my little ones, you
exceeded my expectations!
Juniors and music!


Making Juniors interested in Peruvian Culture is a challenge
for every teacher. That’s why I gave my Junior 12 class the task
of preparing a small biography about a successful Peruvian
musician. This would make them put into practice aspects
from the lessons we’d been working on so far, like preparing
a presentation, using the music vocabulary and preparing a
biography. To accomplish this, each student chose a musician
from a list I’d prepared, which included musicians like
Chabuca Granda, Dina Paucar, Pedro Suarez Vertiz, and so
on. They had a week to prepare their presentations. When
the day arrived, my students were more than engaged with
the activity; some of them brought posters, PowerPoint
presentations and music. It was a great experience!!


Por primera vez se realizó un karaoke al cual todos los alumnos
estuvieron invitados para demostrar sus habilidades para el
canto. La participación fue masiva y el evento fue un éxito
sin precedentes, que dio como resultado un aula llena de
entusiastas participantes que, motivados por sus compañeros
y profesores, decidieron poner en práctica lo aprendido en
clase a través de la música. Fue una tarde muy grata en la cual
todos los alumnos asistentes compartieron un momento de
alegría y diversión.
Endangered Animals:
Pandas and Koalas. Are
they the only ones?


Every time we come across this question, these animals head
the list. However, what do a spectacled bear, a pink dolphin
or a cock of the rock have in common? My Junior 4 students
knew how to answer that tough question: they are all typical
endangered Peruvian animals, and the main focus of a very
challenging project whose main purpose was to boost our
knowledge on this topic.
When the day came, I was delighted to see how motivated
they were to discuss and present their projects during the
lesson. Indeed, we were really glad to know more about
our own culture and to be aware of the dangers that these
species constantly face.

I can say that the BRITÁNICO gave me the power. I started in 2009, in Basic 3 to be precise,
and, just like the vast majority, I was really nervous on my first day of class, but gradually I
gained confidence and then started to feel how my fluency was getting better and how new
words I had learnt were sticking in my brain. Since then, I can say the power was with me; I
know that the BRITÁNICO gave me the tools to learn. Furthermore, my teachers supported me
when I made mistakes and they were always checking that I learnt the lesson. Finally, when I
was in advanced level, I decided to practise with people from abroad, so I joined a non-profit
organization in which you can get to know many people. You can even host them and I did,
first one, then two and so far I’ve hosted 59 people from many countries, particularly from
Europe. If I had never studied at the BRITÁNICO, I would never have done it. Thanks a lot.
