LUSHA OPERA LIBRETTO AND ORCHESTRAL SCORE I ACT (IN III PARTS) BY RUDOLF ZARAS © COPYRIGHT 1993 ZARAS LUSHA OPERA LIBRETTO I ACT (IN III PARTS) BY RUDOLF ZARAS SCENA It is the year 2010, a time in Mexico city when opera flourished with renewed popularity once again. This story is about a thirty-five year old diva, LUSHA, the great opera singer and daughter of Russian immigrants, but who was born and brought up in the Mexico, Districto Federal. Lusha is in love with VITALOS, a great piano and opera composer who lived in the 19th century. Vitalos was a man that Lusha could only dream about, and adore within her own heart and imagination. She fell in love with him because of his operas that she has performed. Being in love was one thing, but for Lusha, being in love with a man that had lived in another century, was unrequited love beyond torture. This was what had motivated her to be the most expressive and distinguished opera singer of her time. Conveying her real anguish, intensity, passion, and love into her work. Part I opens as an opera within an opera. Lusha is performing the final scene of "PLEASE CELEST," a work by Vitalos that takes place in medieval times. She is playing Celest, the reluctant princess who has been playing hard to get, but finally deciding that she doesn't want to be the consort of a prince, thus brushing off the four prince suitors that are trying to woo her. After the opera is over, she is congratulated back stage by everyone including Syro, the impresario. Syro is a 40 year-old Mexican-Italian who is portly and sports a ponytail. He adores and venerates Lusha for the great opera singer that she is. Luciano Pavarotti who was in the audience also congratulates her backstage. He also admires her. Lusha is then met in her dressing room by Chichi, a flashy and beautiful socialite who is Lusha's confidant and best friend. While both women talk about Vitalos, Syro stops in to make sure that Lusha is going to the party that is being thrown in her honor for the success of the opera. But she will first take a quick nap in her dressing room. Chichi stupidly offers her some sleeping pills so she might rest better. When Syro and Chichi leave, Lusha falls into a deep sleep and dreams of going to the party. But instead of the actual party, she goes back to the time of Vitalos in Paris, 1843. Vitalos is throwing his own party in her honor for the stupendous and epic interpretation of his work. Here, Lusha meets Vitalos for the first time. She also meets other distinguished characters of the past. She falls in love all over again with Vitalos. Vitalos falls in love with her as well. For Lusha it was the dream to end all dreams. But as the inevitable would have it, she then wakes up realizing that it was only a dream. It sends her into the most depressed and despondent state causing her to give up the will to live. She consequently swallows all the sleeping pills that Chichi gave her. She swallows the pills irrationally thinking that, if she makes her dream permanent, she will be with Vitalos for eternity. Prop simulated audience is graphed onto backdrop with recorded audio applause and praises.) It is the conclusion of the last act in the performance of "POR FAVOR CELESTIA." It is one of the earlier works of opera and piano composer Vitalos. In the last scene of Por Favor Celestia, Lusha is cast in the role of Celestia. The curtain goes up to the frenzy of the audience yelling for Lusha. PROP AUDIENCE: (Chorus) LUSHA! LUSHA! LUSHA! LUSHA! [While stomping their feet on the wooden floor in unison. They are then overpowered by the orchestra and chorus of the four suitors.] FOUR SUITORS: Celestia Princesa Mi querida Tu eres el amor De mi vida. [Four suitors are entreating Celestia inside her father's castle. But Celestia always reluctant finally tells them that she could never be bonded to any kingdom, not even her father.] CELESTIA: Que corto el breve suspiro [Prop audience claps, cheers, and whistles wildly as Lusha starts to sing.] Honores de esmalte sentido Tributo de reyes al torno Asaltos con amor Fermentos de una flor Que forma de lucro se empena Ofrenda con lujos Terno a la boga Con ojos de ducho Que ves la torre Ni es mia FOUR PRINCE SUITORS: No es tener temor Que no son palabras de horor Si tu Me das Amor CELESTIA: No! [The opera culminates into a roar of applause and praises as another curtain falls on the prop audience, (exposing the back stage scenery to the real audience, and consequently leaving the backstage as the continuing set for the first scene.) The curtain opens back up to the endless applause and adulation of the people as Lusha and the suitors are seen again for an encore appearance. They bow reaping the admiration and glitter of flashing cameras. They bow again. Then as the curtains finally close, Lusha is congratulated by Syro, the impresario as he meets her while stage crew and cast gather around her as well. Syro kisses her hand, then presents her with roses.] SYRO: Te felicito Lusha prima donna! 4 BACKSTAGE CREW AND CAST: (Chorus) Que viva Lusha! SYRO: Si! La opera fue un gran exito! Finally through the middle flaps of the curtains emerges Luciano Pavarotti. He was in the audience and has now come to meet and congratulate Lusha for her magnificent performance.] LUCIANO: Es un angel que escuche! She puts the roses aside while loosening her bulky renaissance costume. She then walks over to a life-size poster of Vitalos from the only photograph that was taken of him during his lifetime. She kisses her fingers then touches the feet of the poster. Lusha sits down to take some makeup off. It is during this time that Chichi, her best friend walks in. She is dressed in a ski tight luminescent skirt with very high heels, gloves, and lots of jewelry. She goes over to congratulate Lusha with a hug and a kiss. CHICHI: [Parlante] Que hermoso cantaste! LUSHA: [Parlante] Estube nerviosa. CHICHI: Que voz tan divina LUSHA: Toda despeinada [While glancing over at the mirror] 7 CHICHI: Vitalos compuso una gran opera [Lusha's face lights up at the mention of Vitalos' name as she turns to look at Chichi with eager anticipation as though Vitalos himself to jump out at the very mentioning of his name, but then puts her head down into her arms over the dressing room vanity while feeling the pains of her love. Chichi glances over at the poster of Vitalos then sympathetically looks at Lusha. She knows how obsessed she is with this man who lived over a century ago. Then both of them kind of look and move away from each other as though they don't know what to say anymore. At this time Syro knocks on the dressing room door.] 8 LUSHA: [Parlante] Entra! SYRO: [He begins to speak with half of his body looking in making sure that Lusha is decent.] Querida de honor [he now walks in closing the door behind him.] Soy tu servidor Pulcro divina Donde el mundo termina CHICHI: Rostro de este rubo soroche [jesting with Syro while pinching his cheeks] SYRO: Misericordia! Esto la Virgen Maria condena [she hiccups] SYRO: Tu modorra LUSHA: Tierna SYRO: Sonolienta descansa LUSHA: Festivo [At this time Lusha is sitting on the couch after becoming dizzy from the effects of the booze, and because she is tired. She is thinking that she is going to enjoy herself at the opera's celebration banquet that Syro has put together. But first she is going to take a little nap.] CHICHI: Dejo pastillas de durmir [she gives Lusha her bottle of sleeping pills that she is carrying in her purse, thinking that Lusha might need them to help her rest.] SYRO: Duerme LUSHA: Fiesta [Lusha speaks in a drowsy tome of voice while still thinking of the celebration that she is going to. She then lays down to sleep and Syro covers her with a large coat.] SYRO & CHICHI: Mil centinelas mande Dios Para cuidar tus suenos CHICHI: Goodnight [they tiptoe out of the dressing room.] [Curtain close] END OF PART I 11 INTERMEZZO PART II SCENE I [Lusha's dream] [Curtain Open] [It is within Lusha's dream that takes her back to Paris of 1843, the time of Vitalos. It is evening and the scene is inside of Vitalos large estate. Guests begin to file in one after another as Vitalos and Syro greet them as they walk into the salon. A servant is announcing them at the door as he welcomes them in. Other servants are in the background taking care of last minute preparations. Vitalos has invited the most distinguished talents of Paris in honor of Lusha's performance of his opera. [The guests include in order as they walk in:] SERVANT: [parlante] Messieurs Gioacchino Rossini y Alexander Dumas Maestros Hector Berlioz y Franz Liszt Accompanado por countessa Marie D Agoult y Princesa Cristina Belgiojoso El distingido Honore Balzac Maestros Richard Wagner y Frederic Chopin Accompaniado por la fabulosa George Sand Y el maestro Niccolo Paganini [At this time while Vitalos finishes his handshake with Paganini, notices Lusha as she walks in with Chichi behind her. For a few moments, Lusha just stands there looking at Vitalos as he also stands there looking at Lusha. Then Chichi breaks the awkwardness by moving forward and greeting Vitalos. Lusha also greets him. Vitalos kisses both women's hands. Lusha is completely captivated because to her, she is meeting Vitalos for the first time. Vitalos is also taken by her beauty. Both are in love with each other as only in a fairytale dream. Now all the guests shower their attention on Lusha. She remembers all of them from somewhere before, but familiar faces she is sure that she has never personally met. 12 WAGNER: AH Lusha! [as he walks up to her] Lusha! Lusha! Lusha! Lusha! She is joyed that Lusha finally gets to meet Vitalos. Lusha and Vitalos go and sit on a couch off to the side. Chichi glances at them. Franz Liszt requests that Lusha sing to them a song. He will accompany her on the piano while Paganini on the violin.] LISZT: [Cantilenare a capriccio] Lusha! [Paganini grabs a violin that Vitalos has hanging on the wall, rapidly tuning the instrument. The Lusha turns toward both musicians conferring in a whisper as to what they are going to perform. It is an evening setting in the garden. He glances toward te big window looking at the people inside enjoying themselves. He then disappears off stage. Lusha now steps out into the garden. She begins to sing. She sings of her love for Vitalos. Vitalos then comes to go back inside. But he is surprised to see Lusha so suddenly in such unintended circumstances. She is also surprised. They stare at each other with a magnetism of attraction that leaves no doubt in either mind or heart that they were meant for one another. This was their moment to express it. Both now move toward each other closer together. Then finally was inevitable as it was meant to be, they both embrace with body and lips that seals in divine osculation the splendors of romance.] [Curtain close] END OF PART II INTERMEZZO 18 PART III SCENE I [Curtain open] [It is back in Lusha's dressing room. She is waking out of her sleep while the magic of her dream vanishes into oblivion. She is grievously disappointed.] LUSHA: Luto que luto sone Asilo a mi angustia Muy poco que goce En celda de amor Estoy ya lo se [Lusha sees the sleeping pills that Chichi left for her. She then moves over to the dresser and picks up the bottle with deep deliberation from the impulse and emotional thoughts that have completely dominated her. She is so distraught by her dream that she has convinced herself that she goes to sleep permanently, she will be with Vitalos in an eternal wonderland of dream. And the only way to accomplish this is to ingest all the sleeping pills.] LUSHA: Voy a dormir Y despues a sonar Voy a ver a mi amor A mi amor Al que yo quiero Alma mia lo se Perdoname Dios Por lo que voy a ser Qisas enloquecer De un mal corazon Ya me voy [Lusha swallows all of the sleeping pills, hurls the bottle to the floor, and drinks the remaining champagne while looking at the Vitalos poster. Lusha goes into vertigo and tries to lay on the couch but is so dizzy and off balance that she misses the couch and falls behind it, away from view. She has fainted, quickly slipping into dark unconsciousness. Chichi then comes into the dressing room, but does not see Lusha because she is behind the couch. She looks around but does not find Lusha. She did not show up for the gala. Lusha softly moves from her last gasping signs. Chichi thought she heard something. Chichi notices a fine costume gown hanging off to the side. She goes over to admire it. Lusha moves for the last time from her self induced dream. But is has turned into a nightmare, a torment that the negative effects of the pills have exerted on her. She dies 19 unbeknownst to Chichi. Chichi again thought that she heard something, but doesn't see anything. She shrugs it off. Chichi now picks up the 19th century costume, draping it in front of her as if trying it on. She glances over at the mirror what she would look like in it. It arouses her fancy. She pretends that she is the prima donna while still clutching on to the dress. She begins to sing. It startles her to find that it is Lusha that had been there all along. But she can't understand why she didn't wake up with all the noise that they had been making. Chichi now tries to wake her but can't. It frighten's her. She then listens to Lusha's heart to see if perhaps there might be something wrong. She's not sure whether it's beating or not. She is very concerned. As is with such a tragedy, Lusha has succumbed to the abuse of sleeping pills. Along with her fatigue, her intoxicated physical condition, and disillusioned will to live, have drained the life from her. Syro finds the empty bottle of sleeping pills.] SYRO: La conquiesto el amor Y se quito la vida [Chichi comes back in with the medics followed by a few curios stage hands. The medics have done all they can, but Lusha is gone. One of the medics nods to Syro that she is dead. They begin to cry. There is a moment of disbelief that Lusha has passed away.
