A Message from Principal Sanders
Dear Yeager Families,
It is hard to believe that we are already approaching the winter holiday season.
The Yeager Team, teachers and students, have started off the 2015-2016 school
year with a lot of hard-work. We are already seeing much growth.
As we continue to move forward, it is our expectation that all students
demonstrate Jaguar P.R.I.D.E. These are the school-wide expectations that have
been established here at Yeager. Along with these expectations we have set
quarterly goals that address academics, attendance, and behavior. When
students meet these goals they “Rank Up” and earn special school-wide
privileges. The first quarter we had over 150 students “Rank Up”. We are so
proud of the work they have done to meet/exceed our expectations.
We recently began our W.I.N. (What I Need) groups to specifically address skill
areas that your child needs to improve. MAP testing will be taking place at the
beginning of December and we are looking forward to seeing growth from every
student. With that being said, after-school tutoring will also be beginning very
soon. Keep an eye out for details.
It is my honor and privilege to be a part of your child’s life. It is my goal to
partner with you in developing them as individuals, academically and socially.
The entire Yeager team is committed to helping each and every student improve
each and every day.

Estimadas familias de Yeager,
Es difícil creer que nos acerca la temporada invierna y época de vacaciones. El
equipo de Yeager, los maestros y estudiantes, han comenzado el año escolar del
2015-2016 con mucho esfuerzo. Por su arduo trabajo, hemos comenzado a ver
crecimiento.
Mientras continuamos adelante, esperamos que todos los alumnos demuestren

Necesito”, que fue creado para dar ayuda específica en áreas que necesita su
hijo/a. A principios de diciembre comenzaremos el examen de MAP y esperamos
ver crecimiento en cada estudiante. Con lo dicho, pronto comenzaran las clases
de tutoraría después de clases para dar más apoyo a los estudiantes. Favor de

Es un honor y privilegio ser parte de la vida de sus hijos. Es mi meta asociarme
con ustedes en desarrollar a sus hijos académicamente y socialmente. El equipo
entero de Yeager está comprometido en ayudar a cada estudiante mejorar cada
día.

After School Enrichment Program
On Monday, August 31, North Chicago Community
Partners launched the After School Enrichment
Program at AJK, Neal and Yeager Schools. This program is
designed to offer students valuable social, emotional and
academic support. Each day, students begin their
afternoon by enjoying a nutritious snack provided by the
Northern Illinois Food Bank. Following the refreshment,
students participate in one hour of academics, where
they work on their classroom assignments and complete
a variety of activities that enhance their understanding of
what is being taught during the school day. Enrichment
hour is utilized to reinforce valuable life and character
skills through a variety of hands-on activities. Topics of
focus have included respect, responsibility, goal setting
and overcoming obstacles. If you are interested in

How Parents Can Help Their Students at Home
If you were to ask your child, “What is one thing that Ms. Sanders is always trying to get you to show, what would that be?” Undoubtedly, the
children would answer “Show Growth.” Learning does not end in the classroom. Children need help and support at home to succeed in their
studies. Here are some things that parents can do at home to help their children, show growth. Try to create a quiet place at home for your
child to study, and carve out time every day when your child can concentrate on reading, writing, and math uninterrupted by friends, brothers or
sisters, or other distractions. You should also try to sit down with your child at least once a week while he or she works on homework. This will
keep you informed about what your child is working on, and it will help you be the first to know if your child needs help with specific topics. At
home, you can play an important role in setting high expectations and supporting your child in meeting them. There are many fun and interactive
websites for literacy and math. Here are a few FREE online resources that you may want to try at home.






Academic Lunch Bunch
On October 5, North Chicago Community Partners launched Academic Lunch Bunch, a lunchtime tutoring program. Monday through Thursday, students that have been identified as
needing additional support in English Language Arts and/or Math work alongside NCCP
employees and committed volunteers, while enjoying their lunch. These students were selected
to participate in the program based on the results of their MAPS testing. Using various
manipulatives, worksheets and educational games, NCCP employees and volunteers reinforce
the skills and concepts that are being taught during the school day that the students need to

“Lunch Bunch” Academico
El 5 de octubre, North Chicago Community Parnters comenzó “Lunch Bunch” Academico, un
programa de tutoria durante la hora del almuerzo. Lunes a Jueves, los estudiantes que se han
identificado como necesitar ayuda adicional en Arte de Lenguaje o Matematicas, trabajan con

Carnival Fun
North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) hosted its
first Community Carnival in September of 2008 at
Forrestal Elementary School. Since then, this back-toschool event, designed to unite students, families,
teachers and school partners, has become a tradition
at all of the K-5 grade level centers.
This year, over 1,180 students and families
participated in the carnival fun and had the
opportunity to come together and celebrate the
beginning of the 2015-2016 academic year with their
school communities. At A.J. Katzenmaier, Forrestal,
North and Yeager Elementary Schools, families
engaged in activities such as bouncing in bouncy
houses, dancing, face painting, miniature golf and
potato sack races, and at Yeager, even had the
opportunity to throw pies at their favorite school
staff! In addition to the fun and games, there was a
Hot Dog bar and an Ice Cream Sundae bar, as well as
fresh and deliciously popped popcorn for folks to
enjoy throughout the day. Thanks to our partnership
with Bernie’s Book Bank, all families walked away
from the carnival with bundles of books to add to
their home library. Finally, much appreciation goes
out to NCCP’s partners from AbbVie, DePaul, Christ
Church, Church of the Holy Spirit, Naval Station Great
Lakes, North Chicago Community High School, North
Chicago Fire Department and St. James Lutheran
Church for providing the awesome volunteers who
worked alongside us to make these events possible.
Diversion en Carnaval
North Chicago Community Partners (NCCP) anfitriono
su primer Carnaval de Comunidad en Septiembre del
2008 en la escuela Forrestal. Desde ese entonces,

unir a estudiantes, familias, maestros y socios de la

participaron en actividades como el brincolin, bailar,
pintar de caras, golfo en miniatura y carreras en bolsa
de papas, y específicamente en Yeager, hasta
pudieron aventar postre a sus favoritos maestros y
personal de escuela. Aparte de la diversión y los
juegos, hubo Hot Dogs y una estación de Nieve como
también palomitas recién hechas y deliciosas para
que todos disfrutaran durante el dia. Gracias a
nuestros socios Bernie’s Book Bank, todas las familias
se fueron del carnaval con bonches de libros para
agregar a su biblioteca en casa. Finalmente, mucho
aprecio a los socios de NCCP representando a AbbVie,

DISTRICT-WIDE UPDATES
A Message from District Leadership
Dear North Chicago Families,
We are very excited about the strong start to the 2015-2016 school
year. Our students, teachers, principals, staff, and community have
shown great commitment to learning and achieving at high levels.
Across the district, first-quarter attendance rates are at the highest
they’ve been in more than five years. And, while we have a long way
to go, our fall test scores show strong academic improvements. Just a
few particularly exciting highlights of the fall include:





On October 2 , State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Smith
visited our district, and was very impressed with the progress
we’ve made and the wonderful reception he received from our
students.

On October 6 , students from our Health Care Career Pathway
were featured panelists at a county-wide Health Sector Academy
at Rosalind Franklin University. They were the stars of the day!

On October 7 , our PreK-2 Grade teachers began a year-long
partnership with the Erikson Institute, a national leader in early
childhood education, to develop our skill and expertise in teaching
math to our youngest students.
Hundreds of parents have attended this fall’s Family and
Community Engagement events, including back-to-school nights,
community carnivals, health and wellness nights, Title I meetings,
and Parents for Student Success.
Thank you for entrusting your children’s education to us - we are
committed to making this our best year ever, and look forward to
sharing more updates and highlights with you as the year progresses!
Un Mensaje del Liderazgo del Distrito
Estimadas familias de North Chicago,
Estamos muy ansiosos con este comienzo fuerte al año escolar 20152016. Nuestros estudiantes, maestros, directores, personal y
comunidad han demostrado gran dedicación al aprendizaje y alcanzar
altas metas. En todo el distrito, la asistencia del primer trimestre están
lo más alto que han estado en cinco años. Y aunque tenemos mucho en
que mejorar, nuestros resultados de exámenes del otoño han
demostrado grandes mejoras académicas. Algunos logros de este otoño
han sido particularmente emocionantes:

El 2 de Octubre, El Superintendente de Educación del Estado, Dr.
Tony Smith, visito el distrito y estuvo muy impresionado con el
progreso que hemos hecho y la acogida tan maravillosa que
recibieron de nuestros estudiantes.
El 6 de Octubre, estudiantes de nuestro programa de “Health Care
Career Pathway” fueron panelistas en Sector Académico del país
en la Universidad de Rosalind Franklin. ¡Fueron estrellas por el día!
El 7 de Octubre, nuestros maestros de Pre-K a segundo grado
comenzaron una asociación de un ano con el Instituto Erikson, un
líder nacional en educación de edad temprana, para desarrollar
habilidades y pericia en ensenar matemáticas a nuestros
estudiantes más pequeños.
Cientos de padres han asistido a los eventos para Compromiso a la

An Army of Volunteers from Discover CB
North Chicago Community Partners’ relationship with Discover
Consumer Banking continues to grow! Following a large schoolwide beautification project at Yeager Elementary School in the fall
of 2014, and a wonderful year of ongoing literacy programming

with our 3 Grade Classes at Yeager, volunteers from Discover CB
completed a number of facilities renovation projects over this
summer and into the early months of the 2015-2016 academic
year. So far this school year, two exciting projects have taken place
already. In September, over 200 employees from Discover’s
Consumer Banking division participated in their second annual day
of caring, where they hosted interactive science fairs for students
at A. J. Katzenmaier and Yeager Elementary, and completed a wide
range of facilities beautification projects at the Districts Board
Office, Neal Math and Science Academy, and North Chicago
Community High School. Most recently, approximately 15
employees from various departments came together to revitalize
the softball field at North Chicago Community High School, so that
the ladies could have a safe and beautiful field on which to practice
and host games beginning in the Spring. We look forward to
welcoming back a group from Consumer Banking, who will be
volunteering on an ongoing basis in North Chicago Community
Partners’ Academic Lunch Bunch at Yeager this year.

¡La relación entre North Chicago Community Partners y Discover
Consumer Banking sigue creciendo! Despues de un proyecto
grande de embellecer la escuela Yeager en el otoño del 2014, y un
ano de programación de lectura con nuestras clases de tercer
grado en la escuela Yeager, voluntarios de Discover CB
completaron un numero de proyectos de renovaciones atravez del
verano y entrando a los meses de el ano escolar 2015-2016. Ya en
este ano escolar, se han llevado acabo dos proyectos muy
emocionantes. En septiembre, mas de 200 empleados de
Discover’s Consumer Banking participaron en su segundo dia anual
de cuidado donde anfitrionaron estacionaces scientificas e
interactivas para los estudiantes de A.J. Katzenmaier y Yeager y
completaron varios proyectos de embellecimiento en La oficina del
Distrito, Neal Math and Science y North Chicago Community High
School. Recientemente, más o menos 15 empleados de varios
