Leaders Discuss Sugary Drink Tax to End Poor Health in Latino Community
By: Ashmar Mandou
According to the American
Heart Association, sugary
drinks are the single largest
source of added sugar in
American’s diet. Sugary
drinks are the cause of
diabetes, some cancers,
obesity, and heart disease
that cost Illinoisans over $6
billion a year in health care
costs. On Monday, Nov.
2nd, the American Heart
Association organized a
roundtable discussion with
local leaders who have
advocated sugary drink
taxes on a national and
local level. The Healthy
Eating Active Living
(HEAL) Act introduced to
Illinois Lawmakers, earlier
this year, an act that would
place a penny-per-ounce tax
on sugary drinks and help
generate an estimated $600
million yearly to invest
in community programs
that support nutrition and
exercise, in addition restore
cuts and fund prevention in
Medicaid.
At the roundtable
discussion,
Rebecca
Berner, the institutional
development director for
El Poder del Consumidor,
a nonprofit consumers
right advocacy group in
Mexico, shared positive
efforts proponents in
Mexico took to get the
initiative passed in 2013.
“Mexico is one of the
world’s leaders in sugary
drink consumption,” said
Berner. “Before the tax
was implemented, 70
percent of added sugar in
the Mexican diet comes
from sugary drinks and
there are more than 24,000
deaths each year from soda
consumption in Mexico.”
Executive Director of the
Latino Coalition Xavier
Morales also shared gains
in health in Berkeley,
CA as he spearheaded
a campaign that helped
the city become the first
in the country to pass a
sugary drink tax in 2014.
“Community meetings
and going door to door
to engage the Hispanic
community were key in
gaining support,” said
Morales. Both Morales and
Berner said Latino children
are heavily targeted by
sugary drink and junk food
advertisements, which
succumbs them to diabetes,
heart disease, and stroke
in their adult life. State
Senator Mattie Hunter
and State Representative
Robyn Gabel, chief
sponsors of the HEAL
Act, along with State
Representative Elizabeth
Hernandez, a co-sponsor
of the HEAL Act, attended
the roundtable discussion.
Community Moms Bring “Day of Dead” Message to Legislators
Ashmar Mandou
During Dia de los
Muertos weekend, a
group of vexed Logan
Square parents built Day
of the Dead altars to urge
legislators to fix the state
budget. “Altars are built to
honor ancestors and grieve
a loss one,” Erika Soto, a
mother of two, explained.
“Well, by building these
alters we are saying we
want justice and solutions
and fair taxes, not more
cuts to education. Soto
is a member of the Logan
Square Neighborhood
Association (LSNA). The
altars included a “tree of
life,” representing fair
solutions to bring more
money to pass a state
budget by “increasing
taxes on the wealthy,
corporations,
and
financial institutions.”

Líderes Discuten el Impuesto a las Bebidas Azucaradas para Poner Fin a la Mala Salud en la Comunidad Latina
Por: Ashmar Mandou
De acuerdo a la Asociación
Estadounidense
del
Corazón, las bebidas
azucaradas
son
la
mayor fuente de azúcar
agregada a la dieta de
los estadounidenses. Las
bebidas azucaradas son
la causa de la diabetes,
algunos cánceres, obesidad
y enfermedades cardíacas
que cuestan a los residentes
de Illinois más de $6 mil
millones al año en costos de
cuidado de salud. El lunes,
2 de noviembre, American
Heart Association organizó
un debate de mesa redonda
con los líderes locales
que han abogado por el
impuesto a las bebidas
azucaradas a nivel local y
nacional. El Acta Healthy
Eating Active Living
(HEAL) fue introducida
por los legisladores de
Illinois a principios de este
año y pondría un centavo
por onza de impuesto en
las bebidas azucaradas
y ayudaría a generar un
estimado de $600 millones
al año para invertir en
programas comunitarios
que apoyen la nutrición
y el ejercicio, además de
restaurar cortes y fondos de
prevención en Medicaid.
En el debate de mesa
redonda, Rebecca Berner,
directora institucional de
desarrollo de El Poder del
Consumidor, grupo no
lucrativo de abogacía al
derecho del consumidor
en México, compartió los
esfuerzos positivos que
tomaron los partidarios
en México para pasar
la iniciativa en el 2013.
“México es uno de los
países líderes del mundo
en consumo de bebidas
azucaradas”, dijo Berner.
hispana fueron clave para
conseguir el apoyo”, dijo
Morales. Tanto Morales
como Berner dijeron
que los niños latinos
son considerablemente
influenciados por los
anuncios de bebidas
azucaradas y comida
chatarra, lo que los
lleva a la diabetes, a las
enfermedades cardíacas
y a las embolias, en su
vida adulta. La Senadora
Estatal, Mattie Hunter
y
el
Representante
Estatal Robyn Gabel,
patrocinadores principales
del Act HEAL,junto con
la Representante Estatal
Elizabeth
Hernández,
copatrocinadora del Acta
HEAL, asistieron a la mesa
redonda.
“Antes de que el impuesto
fuera implementado, el
70 por ciento de azúcar
agregada en la dieta de los
mexicanos venía de bebidas
azucaradas y hay más
de 24,000 fallecimientos
cada año por el consumo
de soda en México”. El
Director Ejecutivo de la
Coalición Latina, Xavier
Morales,
compartió
también el mejoramiento
de la salud en Berkeley,
CA, al encabezar una
campaña que ayudó a que
la ciudad fuera la primera
en el país en aprobar un
impuesto a las bebidas
azucaradas en el 2014.

Cook County Democratic Party Endorses Michelle Harris for Clerk of the Circuit Court
The Cook County
Democratic
Party
unanimously endorsed
Alderman
Michelle
Harris (8th) for Clerk
of the Circuit Court in
the March Primary after
pulling its support from

They included Harris,
Brown, attorney Jacob

“I am honored that the

Más de 90 residentes de
la localidad disfrutaron un
taller de tecnología móvil
en Aurora, al lanzar AARP
la ampliación nacional de
su Programa AARP TEK
con el apoyo de AT&T. El
taller AARP TEK en Aurora
estuvo designado para
capacitar a los residentes
locales, que tienen 50
años o más, a aumentar
su alfabetización digital,
enseñándoles las destrezas
necesarias y dándoles la
confianza que necesitan
para usar la tecnología.
Estas tecnologías móviles
están
transformando
la forma de encontrar
información, conducir
un negocio y conectar
a la gente una con otra.
AARP TEK se ampliará
e incluirá ocho nuevas
ciudades, once locales
en general, presentando
talleres en vivo destinados
a ayudar a cerrar la brecha
de tecnología entre
personas de 50 años o más.
Presentado con el apoyo
de AT&T, estos talleres,
frente a frente, hacen
posible que la gente nivele
su tecnología personal
para enriquecer sus vidas.
AARP TEK (que significa
Educación y Conocimiento
en Tecnología) fue lanzado
el año pasado. Incluye
talleres prácticos en sitios
selectos, así como la
Academia AARP TEK que
es gratuita y fácil de usar
en línea en los salones de
clase. Ambas son abiertas
a todos, incluyendo, pero
no limitándose, a los
miembros de AARP y están
diseñadas para ayudar
a los estadounidenses
a conectarse con gente
y cosas que les gusten
en su vida, usando la
tecnología. Para más
información sobre AARP
TEK o para más detalles en
los talleres programados,

Madres de la Comunidad
Llevan el Mensaje del “Día de
los Muertos” a los Legisladores
Ashmar Mandou
En el fin de
semana del Día de los
Muertos, un grupo de
enojados padres de Logan
Square
construyeron
altares del Día de los
Muertos para exhortar a
los legisladores a arreglar
el presupuesto estatal.
“Los altares se hacen en
honor a los ancestros y
para llorar su pérdida”,
explicó Erika Soto, madre
de dos niños. “Bueno, al
erigir estos altares estamos
diciendo que queremos
justicia y soluciones e
impuestos justos, no más
cortes a la educación. Soto
es miembro de Logan
Square Neighborhood
Association (LSNA). Los
altares incluyen un ‘árbol
de la vida’, representando
soluciones justas para
traer más dinero para
aprobar un presupuesto
estatal “aumentando los
impuestos a los ricos,
las corporaciones y las
instituciones financieras”.
