School to lnform Parents if Their Student
Receives a Threat
"lt has always been our practice to keep parents informed
if their son or daughter
receives a serious threat of violence or harm at school, but it is important for you
to know about a procedures we have implemented to comply with recent
changes in State Law.
"Oregon law requires schools to inform parents if their son or daughter's name
appears on a targeted list (i.e., a "hit list") that threatens violence or harm, or
when he or she receives a threat of violence or harm from another student. We
will be using the following procedure to inform you if your student either receives
or makes a serious threat of violence or harm.
"lf your son or daughter's name appears on a list threatening violence or harm, or
if he or she receives other threats of violence or harm by another student, we will
attempt to meet with you personally, or talk by telephone, within 12 hours of
learning about the threat. We will tell you about the threat, who made it (if we
know), and the action we are taking to respond to it. We will also send you a
notice within 24 hours, stating that you son or daughter did receive a threat. Our
number one priority will be to make sure that school is safe for your children,
"lf your son or daughter made the threat, we will let you know that he or she
made it and the action we are taking, including informing the parents of the
student who received a threat that your student made. We are also required by
the district's Student Riqhts and Responsibilities Handbook to inform the police."

ATTENDANCE
It is important to call the scho ol, 541-790-4459, when your student is unable
to attend for an excused absence (see below for what constitutes an excused
absence). If you do not have a phone, please send a note with your child when
he/she returns to school. If your student is absent three consecutive school
days, or has irregular attendance, anote from a doctor or nurse practitioner
may be required.
North Eugene strongly enforces the following Oregon laws regarding
attendance:
COMPULSORY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
School attendance required; age limits.
ORS339.010states"... allchildrenbetweentheages of 7 and lSyearswhohavenotcompletedthe l2th
grade are required to attend regularly a public full-time school of the school district in which the child
resides."
Duty to send children to school.
ORS 339.020 states ". . . every person having control of any child between the ages of 7 and 18 years
who has not completed the l2th grade is required to send such child to and maintain such child in regular
attendance at a public full-time school during the entire school term."
Estimates of attendance; irregular attendance; excused absences.
ORS 339.065 states (1) In estimating regular attendance for purposes of the compulsory attendance ...
the principal or teacher shall consider all unexcused absences. Eight, unexcused one-halfday absences
in any four-week period during which the school is in session shall be considered irregular
attendance.
(2) An absence may be excused if the absence is caused by the pupil's sickness, by the sickness of
some member of the pupil's family or by an emergency. A principal or teacher may also excuse
absences for other reasons where satisfactory anangements are made in advance of the absence.
Truancy
Truancy is defined as a student being absent from a class without a legitimate excuse. Chronic absences
or tardies (excused or unexcused) may result in a truancy referral to Lane ESD, an investigation, and a
citation for up to $190.00 and possible court appearance.
10 Day Rule \ilithdrawal Rule
OAR 581-23-006 (4b) states "A student must be withdrawn from the active roll on the day following the
tenth consecutive full school day of absence but may be retained on the inactive roll at the district's
option. A student must be present for at least one-half day in order to restart the count of consecutive
days' absence." Regardless of the reason and whether or not the student is returning, if a student is
absent 10 or more consecutive days, the student MUST be withdrawn from school. Reasons include but
are not limited to vacation, illness, or other medical reasons.
ASISTENCIA

Rotary Youth Exchanges
Are you interested in learning a new language or meeting new people? Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a
lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. By sharing your own culture and embracing a new
one, you help foster global understanding-and learn a great deal about yourself and your home country in the process.
What is a Rotary Youth Exchange?
Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportunity for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks (short-term) to
a full year (long-term) as an international student hosted by local Rotary clubs.
We currently exchange with the following countries:
ARGENTINA ECUADOR STOVAKIA
RUSSIA
DENMARK
BETGIUM FINTAND SPAIN
BOLIVIA FRANCE SWEDEN JAPAN
GERMANY SWITZERLAND CZECH REP.
BRAZIT
THAII.AND
INDIA
CHITE
ls an exchange right for me?
Exchanges are for people ages 15-19* who:
Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community
.
.
.
.
Are flexible and willing to try new things
Are open to cultural differences
Can serve as an ambassador for their own country
* But not yet
78 years old by August L5, 2075, of the outbound year
How much does it cost?
Local Rotary clubs in foreign countries generously host students and provide room and board with a host family and a
small monthly stipend. Currently, the estimated cost for a Long-term exchange is approximately 56,200. That fee
includes your airfare, health insurance etc.
Where can I learn more about Rotary Youth Exchange?
Attend an informational night at one of the following schools to learn more about this exciting opportunity.

Welcome North Families to the 2014-2015 School Year!
Thank you to the families, and businesses, that supported North Eugene High School by
donating to the Eugene Education Fund (EEF) this past year. We used these funds to sponsor
student field trips to state universities and to increase our counseling hours for the 20I4-I5
school year. Please consider giving again or to begin a tradition of supporting North programs
and staffing through EEF.
Our goal is to raise $50,000 through direct donations this school year. If we raise an average of
$50 per student during this school year, we will reach our goal.
Please give as generously as you can, considering that not all families can give equally.
and ALL amounts will help us reach our goal. Consider setting up a
monthly withdrawal to spread out your contribution over time. $5/month for 10 months will
reach the goal.
ANY amount is welcome
of your contribution through EEF can be desi gnated to support North staffing; 57o supports
grants for all 4J schools. The entire contribution is tax deductible.

Studies show that parental involvement in a child's education is one of the most
important factors in raising student self-esteem and academic achievement. We
realize that each of our families is unique - with its own priorities, needs, talents, and
time constraints -- and so we try to provide as many different kinds of opportunities
for parental involvement as possible. Some examples of volunteer opportunities
would be helping with clerical tasks, monitoring the halls, tutoring, helping in the
library, etc.
Call the Front Office al54t-790-4500 with questions or more information. You can
fill out the application to become a volunteer at www.helpcounter.net/eugene.

Dear Parents
North Eugene High School students are encouraged to attend a ZAPS test-preparation seminar to hetp
them achieve their best-possible scores on the PSAT and SAT exams:

Time: 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Price per seminar: $89.99

a top score of 2400 and the national average at 1500, a score increase of even 50 points on the SAT is a
significant advantage. The PSAT allows students to compete for the prestigious National Merit Scholarship; it also

PSAT/SAT seminar
and practice the tips and strategies at home
typically raise their PSAT scores by 5 to
15 points and/or SAT scores by 50 to 150 points.
