Message From the Principal
July 2012
Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to all of our returning students, parents, and guardians and welcome to the
incoming Class of 2016! We have been busy this summer preparing for the opening of the
school year. Our work will continue to focus on helping all students reach their fullest academic and social potential in addition to developing essential college-readiness skills for
success after high school. We anticipate a productive and rewarding school year as we build
upon the best ways to educate the students at Fairfax High School.
The leading initiative for school improvement at Fairfax will remain the implementation of
a school-wide International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Accordingly, this requires that all
students will follow a more advanced and rigorous course path that will ultimately translate
into being better prepared and confident to meet the challenges of a post-secondary education. In addition, we will continue to strengthen student literacy and numeracy skills which
are the vital components to performing at a higher level on state, national, and global assessment standards. Moreover, we will build upon the successes of our Advisory and Tutoring
periods in order to reinforce the connections and interventions crucial to each student’s academic and social achievement.
Substantial to the success of every student is being prepared and organized each school day.
It is equally important that students maintain consistent attendance and be on time to each
class. These are the daily routines that will provide the foundation for success throughout
the school year. As a reminder, we will send out early and frequent progress reports on each
student, as well as provide information by phone messaging, email and the internet regarding daily attendance and weekly class progress. Our school-wide interventions will continue to include mandatory tutoring for any student in jeopardy of failing a class, however, we
encourage all students to use this time to maintain or enrich their academic performance in
any course throughout the year. We will also provide intense attendance monitoring including attendance probation and truancy citations for excessive absences, and will continue
with our school-wide tardy policy (Stampede Academic Recovery Time [START]) for students arriving late to class. Finally, we are excited to introduce the nationally acclaimed
“Rachel’s Challenge” program to Fairfax, in an effort to improve our school-wide culture
through better student relationships, tolerance, and service to others. We will provide more
information regarding the implementation of this program to our entire school community
early in the coming school year.
We look forward to working with each of you as we provide the most rigorous college preparation program available to students. We firmly believe in the collective abilities of our
students and faculty; with hard work and dedication, all things are possible. Wishing you a

Estimados Estudiantes, Padres y Tutores,
¡Bienvenidos de nuevo a todos nuestros estudiantes que regresan, padres y tutores y bienvenidos
a los nuevos estudiantes de la Clase entrante del 2016! Hemos estado ocupados este verano
preparándonos para la comienzo del año escolar. Nuestro trabajo continuará centrándose en
ayudar a todo los estudiantes a alcanzar su máximo potencial académico y social además de
desarrollar las habilidades esenciales para la preparación universitaria para el éxito después de la
preparatoria. Anticipamos un año escolar productivo y de recompensa mientras que construimos
sobre las mejores maneras de educar a los estudiantes en la Preparatoria Fairfax.
La iniciativa principal para el mejoramiento escolar en Fairfax seguirá siendo la implementación
del programa Internacional de Bachillerato (IB) a nivel escolar. Por consiguiente, esto requiere
que todos los estudiantes sigan una trayectoria más avanzada y más rigurosa del curso que se
traducirá en estar mejor preparado y confidente para resolver los desafíos de una educación postsecundaria. Además, continuaremos reforzando las habilidades de instrucción estudiantil y

construiremos sobre los éxitos de nuestras clases Consultivas y Tutorías para reforzar las

Student Parking
Student Parking is a privilege and students may apply with
the security office to park on campus.
Students will be allowed to park on campus under the following requirements:
1. Possession of a valid drivers license
2. Written permission from parents/guardians
3. Proof of registration and insurance
4. Student has passed all classes the previous semester and is on track to
graduate.
5. Student does not have excessive absences
6. Student did not receive any discipline referrals during the previous semester.
Students that meet these requirements will be subject to review every six
weeks and may lose this privilege for violation of one or more of these requirements. If a student does not meet this criterion they will be provided an
opportunity to reapply after six weeks and will be evaluated on their merit of
meeting this school policy.
Note: Students must park in designated areas. Do not leave valuables in
parked cars as the school does not assume responsibility for the loss of stolen items. Cars are not to be used as lockers. Students should leave their
cars and the parking lot immediately after parking. Sitting in cars is prohibited during the school day, including lunch hours. Absolutely no loitering
in the parking lot during the school day. Students should drive their vehicles carefully and with a concern for the well-being of others.
Sophomore/Junior/Senior make-up day:

Health And Emergency Information Form
Students MUST have an UPDATED Health &
Medical Emergency Card on file in the Health Center. Please complete and return the attached form
(cherry color) on or before Monday, August 6th.
Immunizations
Identification Cards
Student safety is a top priority at school. To help provide a safe and secure campus, ALL students and staff are required to wear a VISIBLE ID
at all times. The following procedures must be followed in order to
identify our students and keep our campus safe:
1.Every student is given one free ID at the time of registration.
2. ID’s shall be worn above the waist at all times
3. Student ID is required to receive school services.
Replacement ID’s or a 1 day temporary ID may be purchased in the
Bookstore. Student ID’s remain the property of school and shall not be
defaced or mutilated.
Student ID replacement: $5.00
1 day Temporary Student ID: $1.00
Arizona State Law requires that immunization records be on file in the nurse’s office
in all schools. If you are not sure that your student is
up to date on his/her immunizations, please come by
the nurse’s office after August 8, 2012 from 7:30 a.m.
until 2:30 p.m.
Free immunizations may be obtained at the Maricopa
County Health Center located in the Grunow Building at
926 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, AZ 85006. The telephone number to find other locations for immunizations
given by the Maricopa County Health Center is 602-263
-8856 (English and Spanish). Immunizations may also
be obtained from any other additional site of your
choice.
Compliance with the law is essential for your child to be
admitted or readmitted to Betty H. Fairfax High School
during the 2012-2013 school year.

Todos los estudiantes DEBEN tener una tarjeta de Información Medica y de
Emergencia al CORRIENTE en el Centro de Salud de la escuela. Favor de
completar y devolver la forma adjunta (color cereza) en o antes del lunes 6 de
Agosto.
La seguridad estudiantil es nuestra primera prioridad en la escuela.
Para ayudar a provee un plantel seguro, se requiere que TODOS los
estudiantes y miembros del personal usen una identificación VISIBLE a todo tiempo. Los siguientes reglamentos están en lugar para
asistir con la identificación de nuestros estudiantes y para mantener
un plantel seguro:
1. A todos los estudiantes se les proporciona con una
Identificación gratuita al momento de inscripción.

Vacunas

Los estudiantes que cumplan con estos requisitos serán sujetos a revisión cada seis semanas y pueden perder este privilegio por violar uno o más de estos requisitos. En caso que
un estudiante no cumpla con este criterio, se les permitirá la oportunidad de volver a aplicar seis semanas después de la aplicación inicial y serán evaluados en sus méritos de
cumplir con esta póliza escolar.
Nota: Los estudiantes deben estacionarse solo en las zonas designadas. Favor de no dejar artículos de valor en los vehículos estacionados, ya que la escuela no asume responsabilidad por la pérdida de artículos robados. Los vehículos no deben ser usados como un armario de artículos. Los estudiantes deben salir de sus vehículos y el estacionamiento

Policies and Procedures
STUDENT RECORDS
School record information can only be
given to a custodial parent or guardian. In
all other situations, the parent must be
advised of anyone trying to reach the
student for any reason. Please do not
send brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, etc.
to school to take the student to an appointment, leave a message, or otherwise
contact the student without contacting Fairfax High School
first. Messages from anyone other than the parent or
guardian will not be passed on, no matter what the circumstances, without parent/guardian approval.
If the parent or guardian is not always accessible to the
phone or is sometimes out of town, it would be wise to
establish a second guardian so that we will always have
someone to contact in case of an emergency.
ATTENDANCE & TARDY POLICY
Regular, uninterrupted attendance by students is fundamental to
successful learning; the school will make diligent efforts to
support parents and students in the improvement of attendance.
When a student is absent, the parent/guardian must call the
Attendance Office to inform the school of the absence before
3:00 pm on the day of the absence. The student should bring a
note from the parent/guardian on the day she/he returns to school
if the parent/guardian was not able to call. The note should
include the student's name, student number, the date of the
absence(s), the parent/guardian's name, and phone number. The
note should be turned into the registration office. Any absence
not excused by the parent/guardian within 48 hours (2 school
days) of the absence will be considered unexcused.
Any time a student has accumulated unexcused absences in a
class, the teacher will contact the parent/ guardian by phone or email. The student will also be referred to the Student Liaison or
Dean of Students. The Liaison will prepare a print-out of the
student's attendance in all classes, contact the student and parent,
and place the student on an Attendance Probation Contract. If
the behavior continues and the student reaches a total of 10
unexcused absences in any combination of classes, an attendance
review hearing will be held with the student and the parent/
guardian to determine other appropriate intervention. If a student’s attendance does not improve the following steps will be
taken:
1. The student may be placed in an attendance monitoring
program
2. The student may be referred to the Dean of Students
3. The student/parent/guardian may be referred to the Juvenile
Courts for truancy. (CUTS)
4. The student may be placed in an Alter native Education
Program.
In accordance with district policy and the State of Arizona, after
10 absences students may be dropped from school. Every effort
will be made to contact the parent/guardian so it is crucial that
the school be kept informed of address or phone number changes. A student or his/her parent/guardian may appeal being
dropped from school within four school days from the date of the
drop. Information on the appeal process may be obtained from
the Assistant Principal of Registration. However, the Fairfax
High School practice is NOT to drop students from a single class
for non-attendance. The student will remain in the class but may
not earn credit, resulting in an "F" on the transcript. (NonAttendance does not automatically initiate a drop from an individual class.)
TARDINESS
In order to maximize the amount of instructional time and to
reduce the amount of classroom disruptions, it is imperative that
students be on time for each class. Students
should be in their assigned seat ready to begin
once the final bell finishes. If you arrive after
the final bell rings you will be considered tardy
and assigned to START (Stampede Academic
Recovery Time). If a student is tardy for more
than half of any period they will be marked as an unexcused
absence for that class.
WITHDRAWAL/CHANGE OF ADDRESS OR
PHONE NUMBER
All parents/guardians of students must notify the office
any time there is a change in address, phone number or
when a student withdraws from school.
STUDENTS WHO ARE ILL
Betty H. Fairfax High provides the services of a Registered Nurse. Students who are ill must go to the Nurse
who will call the parent/guardian to come for the student
if the student is ill enough to be sent home.
All students must show an ID and have an
updated emergency release form on file to
be seen by the Nurse.
ASSISTANCE WITH LUNCH TICKETS
Applications for free/reduced lunches are
available in the Registration Office or in the
Community Aide Office located in the
Registration Office. All students must
apply for this service each year. There is no
carryover from the elementary school.
P.E. UNIFORMS
Students enrolled in P.E. classes
are required to "dress out" for
class. P.E. Uniforms may be
purchased from the bookstore.
TEXTBOOKS
All books are the property of the
Phoenix Union High School District
and MUST be returned to the
Bookstore in the event that students
drop a class or leave Betty H. Fairfax
High for any reason including expulsion. If books are not returned, you are financially
responsible for our cost to replace the books.
We appreciate your cooperation in these matters.

of learning.
LUNCH APPLICATIONS
For your convenience, enclosed is a Free/
Reduced Lunch Application. Please make
sure the application is completed and signed
in the appropriate areas. Be sure to bring it
with you on Wednesday, August 1st,
Thursday, August 2nd, or Friday, August 3rd.
CAMPUS ARRIVALS
Please be aware of the following regarding entrance to campus
during the day:
*Prior to 7:40 a.m. students can be dropped off by the gymnasium or off of South Mountain Avenue.
*Students will not be allowed to enter campus at the Circle
Drive entrance; this gate is for automobile traffic only, designated for staff and visitors to drive through to the main campus.
*Students will be required to have their Student ID visible to
enter campus.
TRANSPORTATION
Betty H. Fairfax High School will be providing transportation to all students residing
within our boundaries. Transportation will
be provided through First Student Transportation. Information on bus routes will be
available to students and parents during Orientation.

Students TARDY to any class will assigned to S.T.A.R.T., and shall be served the following school day.
All START assignments must be served within 1 day of the assignment unless prior arrangements have
been made through the Dean of Students Office
Students are required to bring academic work assignments not completed in class as a result of their
tardiness.
Failure to attend assigned START sessions will result in a Disciplinary Referral and may result in Detention to Suspension.
S.T.A.R.T. session will be held in the cafeteria after school.

hacer contacto con él, sin antes hacérnoslo saber en la escuela. Los mensajes de parte de cualquier persona que no sea el
padre o tutor NO serán entregados, sin importar la circunstancia, sin el permiso de los padres o tutores. Sí el padre o
tutor no siempre está disponible por teléfono, o viaja muy
seguido, le recomendamos establecer un segundo contacto,
de manera que siempre habrá alguien con quién comunicarse, en caso de una emergencia.
BAJAS/CAMBIO DE DOMICILIO O TELEFONO
Todos los padres o tutores deberán informar a la escuela
cuando ocurra un cambio en el domicilio o el número de
teléfono o cuando el alumno sea dado de baja de la escuela.
Cualquier momento que algún estudiante haya acumulado ausencias
sin justificación en una clase, el maestro se comunicara con el
padre/tutor por medio de teléfono o correo electrónico. Él/la estudiante también será referido/a al Asesor Estudiantil o Director de
Disciplina. El asesor preparará un reporte de las ausencias en todas
las clases, se comunicará con el padre/tutor y colocará al estudiante
en un contrato probatorio de asistencia. Sí el comportamiento
continua y él/la estudiante acumula un total de 10 ausencias en
cualquier combinación de clases, una audiencia de revisión de
asistencia se llevará a cabo con él/la estudiante y el padre/tutor para
determinar otro intervención apropiada. Sí la asistencia no mejora,
los siguientes pasos se llevarán a cabo:

De acuerdo con la póliza del distrito y del Estado de Arizona,
después de 10 ausencias, los estudiantes pueden ser dados de baja
de la escuela. Haremos todo esfuerzo para comunicarnos con el
padre/tutor; es crucial que la escuela este informada de cambios de
y números telefónicos. Un/a estudiante y su padre/tutor puede
apelar el ver sido de bajas de la escuela durante los primeros cuatro
días de la fecha en que fueron dados de baja. Información sobre el
proceso de apelación puede ser obtenida por medio de la Subdirectora de Inscripción. Por lo tanto, la práctica de Fairfax High School
NO es el dar de baja a ningún estudiante de una clase por falta de
asistencia. Él/la estudiante permanecerá en la clase pero puede que
no reciba crédito, lo cual resultara en una “F” en la boleta. (El no
asistir a una clase, no inicia la dada de baja automáticamente de la
clase.)
TARDANZAS
Para poder aumentar la cantidad del tiempo de instrucción y para
reducir la cantidad de interrupciones en la clase, es imperativo que
los estudiantes lleguen a tiempo a cada clase. Los estudiantes deben
estar en sus asientos asignados y listos para comenzar cuando suene
la campana final. Sí llegas a la clases después de la campana final,
serás considerado/a tarde y serás asignado/a START (Recuperación
de Tiempo Académico Stampede). Sí un/a estudiante llega tarde
por mas de la mitad del tiempo del periodo, serán marcados como
ausentes sin justificación durante ese periodo.

ALUMNOS ENFERMOS
LIBROS DE TEXTO
Betty H. Fairfax High School ofrece los servicios de un/a
enfermero/a titulado/a. Los alumnos que se sientan mal
pueden acudir a la enfermería, desde donde se le llamará
a los padres en caso de que el alumno tenga que irse a su
casa. Todos los alumnos deberán mostrar su identificación y contar con un formulario de emergencia actualizado para recibir servicios de enfermería
Todos los libros son propiedad del
distrito escolar Phoenix Union y DEBERÁN regresarse a la librería en caso de
que los alumnos se den de baja de alguna clases o dejen la escuela por cualquier razón, incluyendo la expulsión. Si no se regresan los libros, ustedes son responsables por el costo
para reemplazar los libros.

POLIZA DE ASISTENCIA Y TARDANZAS
La asistencia estudiantil regular e sin interrupciones es fundamental
para el éxito de aprendizaje; la escuela hará esfuerzos diligentes
para apoyar a los padres y estudiantes en el mejoramiento de asistencia. Cuando un estudiante esta ausente, el padre/tutor debe llamar
a la oficina antes de las 3:00 pm el día de la ausencia. En caso que
el padre/tutor no haya llamado a la oficina, él/la estudiante deberá
traer una nota de justificación de parte del padre/tutor el día que
regresé a la escuela. La nota debe incluir el nombre estudiantil,
número estudiantil, la fecha de la(s) ausencia(s), el nombre del
padre/tutor y número telefónico. La nota debe ser entregada a la
oficina de inscripción. Cualquier ausencia no justificada por un
padre/tutor durante las primeras 48 horas (2 días escolares) de la

RECUPERACION DE TIEMPO ACADEMICO STAMPEDE (START)

2. Todas las asignaciones START deberán ser completadas 1 día después de la asignación, al menos que
haya hecho arreglos de antemano por medio de la oficina del Director de Disciplina.

Student Guidelines
1.
Students are expected to use courteous and proper language at all times. Obscene gestures or language
toward teachers, administrators, staff or fellow students will not be tolerated.
2. Smoking is not permitted on school property.
3. Cheating is unacceptable, and will result in disciplinary action.
4. Classroom behavior should always be courteous, attentive and responsive. Students must always come
prepared to do their work equipped with pens, pencils, book, homework assignments, etc.
5. Students are expected to respect other people’s property at all times. Stealing will not be tolerated.
6. Personal items such as MP-3’s, CD/DVD players, cell phones, etc. are not to used or visible during class. If
a student chooses to bring these items to school, they do so at their own risk. Betty H. Fairfax High School
is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Betty H. Fairfax High School will not replace or reimburse
for any damage or loss.
7. All acts of vandalism, such as defacing or destroying school property will result in the student being suspended and he/she will be responsible for restitution prior to returning to their class. Violators may also be
charged with criminal offense. Permanent markers, paint markers and items associated with tagging are
prohibited.
8. Students are expected to use the crosswalks when crossing 51st Avenue & Baseline Rd. and the other
streets that border the campus.
9. Students are expected to exit through the open gates. Climbing over the fence or gate constitutes dangerous behavior.
10. Inappropriate public displays of affection may result in consequences.
Students found to be non-compliant with the
school dress code will be required to change
clothes or be assigned
detention. Continued violations may result in
a referral.
Due Process
Every student in the Phoenix Union High
School District is afforded his/her constitutional right to due process in matters relating to suspension. The System’s Due Process Policy specifically provides for Notice of
Charges, Temporary Suspensions, hearings
and Right to Appeal. (Definition of Right to
Appeal-if the parent feels that due process
was not accorded, or if new evidence is
available, the parent may appeal to the
principal.)
Dress Code
It is our cultural belief at Fairfax High School that high school is a place of learning, college,
and career readiness. Student dress and appearance should reflect this philosophy. Our school
is not the place to make “fashion statements”. Students shall use good judgment regarding their
attire and grooming so as not to disrupt the educational environment and to establish a healthy
school climate. Clothing must be clean, in good repair, and worn in such a manner as to exercise good taste and not
to detract from the learning environment. The following guidelines must be adhered too:
1. A students’ shirt must extend past the shoulder by 1”. Garments must cover the torso, stomach, back and sides at
all times. Apparel must be appropriate. Low cut neck lines or see through material is prohibited. This includes
muscle shirts, tank tops, razor backs, spaghetti straps, etc.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Betty H. Fairfax is a closed
campus.
2. Clothing and accessories cannot depict any of the following: violence, hatred, obscene material, alcohol, drugs,
or R.I.P. This includes wearing all of one color, red or blue shoe laces or items that encourage gang or crew affiliation (Phx. bird, 602, or geographic locations).
3. Leggings, tights, non-lace pantyhose may be worn under appropriate length garments. Skirts, dresses, shorts
must extend to at least 5” above the knee. Lace pantyhose fish-net stocking are prohibited.
DISRUPTIVE ITEMS
4. Hats may only be worn outdoors and must be worn properly (i.e. bill facing forward). Not hats, beanies, knit
caps, ladies berets should be worn in any building. Bandanas, do-rags, and hair nets are prohibited. Religious head
dress is permitted.
5. At no time, should a student’s under garments be visible (bra, panties, boxers, undershorts, etc.). All garments
should be able to extend up to the waist when worn. Apparel worn below the buttocks will be dress coded.
6. Bedroom attire is just that, for the bedroom. Students may not wear pajama pants, house shoes or slippers.
Violation of dress code policy will result in:
 Student will be asked to make contact with parent/guardian for change of clothes.
 Students unable to obtain a change of clothes will be sent to In School Suspension. Students will not receive
a referral for the occasional dress code violation, unless a student is openly defiant as stated in A.R.S. 15-841.
 Repeated dress code violations are subject to a referral and further disciplinary action.
Administration reserves the right to make modifications to dress code policy and make final determination
of acceptable dress.
The school reserves the right to modify the dress expectations as needed.

Disciplina
Directorio para Estudiantes
1.
Se espera que los estudiantes usen lenguaje cortés y apropiado a cada momento. El hacer gestos o usar
lenguaje de obscenidad hacia los maestros, los administradores, el personal o otros estudiantes no será tolerado.
2. No se permite fumar en el plantel escolar.
3. No se acepta la trampa, y resulta en una acción disciplinaria.
4. El comportamiento en el salón de clase siempre debe ser cortes, atento y responsivo. Los estudiantes deben
siempre llegar preparados para hacer el trabajo equipados con pluma, lápiz, libro, tarea, etcétera.
5. Se espera que los estudiantes respetan la propiedad de otros a cada momento. El robar no se tolera.
6. Las posesiones personales, tales como aparatos de MP-3, CD/DVD, teléfonos celulares, etcétera, no se usan
y no deben ser visibles durante las horas de clase. Si un estudiante elige traer estas cosas a la escuela, es a
su propio riesgo. La escuela Betty H. Fairfax High School no es la responsable para artículos perdidos o
robados. Betty H. Fairfax High School no remplaza o rembolsa por cualquier daño o perdida.

Código de Vestimenta
Cualquier estudiante considerado no conforme con el código de vestimenta de la
escuela se le exige cambiar la ropa o se la
asigna a detención. Las infracciones continúas pueden resultar en una citación disciplinaria.

A cada estudiante en el Distrito de Phoenix
Union High School se le proporciona su derecho constitucional al procedimiento debido
tocante a asuntos relacionados con la suspensión. La póliza sobre el Procedimiento
Debido del Sistema específicamente provee
por una Noticia de Cargos. Las Suspensiones
Temporales, El Examen de Testigos, y el
Derecho de Apelar. (Definición del Derecho
De Apelar-si el padre de familia/tutor cree
que el Procedimiento Debido no se le concedió al estudiante, o si hay nueva evidencia
disponible, el padre de familia/tutor puede
apelar al director de la escuela.
Es nuestra creencia cultural en Fairfax High School que la secundaria es un lugar de aprendizaje, la
universidad, y la preparación de carrera. El vestuario del estudiante y la apariencia debe reflejar esta
filosofía. Nuestra escuela no es el lugar para hacer "declaraciones de la moda". Los estudiantes deben
utilizar el sentido común en cuanto a su vestimenta y aseo personal a fin de no perturbar el ambiente
educativo y establecer un ambiente escolar saludable. La ropa debe estar limpia, en buen estado, y usada
de tal manera que demuestre el buen gusto y no afecte el ambiente de aprendizaje. Las siguientes reglas deben ser mantenidas:
1. Las camisas/blusas de los estudiantes deben extenderse más allá de los hombros por 1". Las prendas deben cubrir el
torso, estómago, la espalda y los lados en todo momento. Ropa debe ser adecuada. Bajo nivel de las líneas del cuello o ver
a través de material es prohibido. Esto incluye camisetas sin mangas, camisetas de tirantes, espaldas de afeitar, tirantes, etc.
2. Ropa y accesorios no pueden representar cualquiera de los siguientes: violencia, el odio, material obsceno, el alcohol,
drogas, o R.I.P. Esto incluye el uso de un solo color, cordones de los zapatos rojos o azules o los artículos que promueven

OBJETOS DE INTERRUPCION

sombreros, gorros, gorros tejidos, boinas para damas deben ser usadas en cualquier edificio. Pañuelos para el cuello, trapos,
y redecillas para el cabello están prohibidos. Tocados religiosos son permitidos.
5. En ningún tiempo, debe ser la ropa íntima visible (sujetador, calzones, calzoncillos, etc.) Toda la ropa debe poder extenderse hasta la cintura cuando se usa. El uso de ropa por debajo de las sentaderas será codificada.
6. Vestimenta para el dormitorio, es sólo eso, para el dormitorio. Los estudiantes no pueden usar pantalones de pijama,
chanclas o pantuflas.
Violación de la póliza de vestimenta resultará en:
 El alumno deberá ponerse en contacto con el padre o tutor para un cambio de ropa.

Los estudiantes que no puedan obtener un cambio de ropa, serán envidados a suspensión dentro de la escuela. Los
estudiantes no recibirán una infracción por la violación del código de vestimenta ocasional, a menos que un estudiante sea abiertamente desafiante, como se indica en A.R.S. 15-841.

Violaciones repetidas de código de vestimenta son sujetas a una infracción y acción disciplinaria.

ATHLETIC INFORMATION FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR
The Athletics Office will re-open on Tuesday, July 10, 2012.
Students interested in participating in sports must complete a Sports Packet.
The Sports Packets are available in the Athletics Office. All papers must be filled out completely. The Informed Consent Video
must be seen by a parent and the student once per school year. The Insurance Form must be notarized or signed in front of the
Athletic Secretary, before the athlete can begin practice of any sport. All sports packets must be turned in one (1) week before

TUTORIA
Fairfax High School is committed to assisting
all students with achieving the highest possible academic success. To further this goal,
procedures have been established to allow
for students to attend tutoring during the
school day. A 35-minute tutoring session
(1:44-2:19pm) will be available for all students Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday immediately after 6th hour.

académico más alto posible. Para llegar a esta meta, procedimientos han sido establecidos para permitir a estudiantes a asistir a tutoría durante el día escolar. Una sesión de

Students are expected to treat the tutoring
period as they would any other period in
their school day. A bell system shall inform
students when tutoring will begin, when
late, and when tutoring ends. If students
are not assigned a specific tutoring location
they are required to report back to their respective Advisory classroom. Failure to follow school-wide tutoring procedures will result in a student being assigned Saturday
School from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This is to
assure that each student is receiving this important academic intervention. Students
that fail to attend an assigned Saturday
School session will be issued a disciplinary
referral on the following school day and assigned in-school suspension.

Evening School is an opportunity to catch up on core credits or strengthen skills needed to pass AIMS Exams for graduation. Free evening school is offered for all 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students during the
school year from 3:20 pm - 5:20 pm. This will be the only opportunity other than summer school for
your student to regain core graduation credits. Transportation will be provided to take your student
home after class.

STUDENT ADVISORY PERIOD
Student Advisory Period is a credit-earning class and is required for all Fairfax High School
students. Students can earn one-half elective credit per school year and 2 elective credits during a 4 year
high school career. Students will be afforded the opportunity to plan, progress, and complete their educational and career action plans (E-CAP), organize their day, receive important school information, while
building positive leadership skills and connectedness to their school, peers, and Advisory Teacher.
The Advisory Period is 20 minutes (7:40-8:00 am) in length and held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
and Friday. A student is required to be in their assigned class location and seated each morning before the
final bell rings. Students that are TARDY will lose points toward passing the course and will face progressive discipline as a consequence. Any student that misses more than half the Advisory class time (10
minutes) will be marked ABSENT, loses all points for the day, and will face truancy and discipline consequences. In addition, students that are repeatedly tardy or absent and fail Advisory Period will lose eligibility to participate in, Student Activities, Sports, Honor Societies, Clubs, etc. and will not be eligible for
Honor Roll, Dean’s and/or Principal’s List consideration.
Students can earn up to 15 points per Advisory Period, (5) for on time arrival, (5) for participation and
(5) for meeting tutoring requirements. A grade of a PASS will be issued for students with exceptional
punctuality, attendance, participation, and adhering to tutoring requirements while earning a minimum of
80% the possible points for a given grading period. A grade of a FAIL will be issued for students who are
excessively tardy, absent, fail to participate and adhere to tutoring requirements and earn less than 80% of
the possible points for a given grading period.
Absences from Advisory Period will receive the following consequences:
1-2 absences - Parent notification
3-5 absences - Referred to Student Attendance Monitor, placed on contract and 1 after-school detention
issued
6-7 absences - Referred to Student Attendance Monitor, Discipline referral, 3 after-school detentions
issued, and referred to Court Truancy Program (CUTS)
9-11 absences - Referred to Student Attendance Monitor, Discipline referral and In-School Suspension
issued
12+ absences - Referred to Student Attendance Monitor, Discipline referral, classes closed, and attendance due process hearing
Fairfax High School will not excuse a student tardy for any reason. Medical appointment excuses will be
accepted for an absence with a signed doctor’s verification. A Parent/Guardian may request in writing an
excused absence due to unavoidable circumstances. The note must be signed by parent, indicate reason for
request, and provided no later than the following day. Continued or repeated request will not be honored.
Any other Advisory Period absences will be reviewed individually by the Dean of Students. Excused absences WILL NOT BE ISSUED for oversleeping, missed bus, traffic, etc.

CLASE CONSULTIVA ESTUDIANTIL
La Clase Consultiva Estudiantil es una clase que gana crédito y es requerida para todos los estudiantes de
Fairfax High School. Los estudiantes pueden ganar la mitad de crédito electivo por año escolar y 2 créditos
electivos durante 4 años en la carrera de preparatoria. A los estudiantes se les dará la oportunidad de planear,
progresar, y terminar sus planes educativos y carrera de acción (E-CAP), organizar su día, recibir importante información escolar, mientras construyen las habilidades de liderazgo positivas y la conexión con su escuela, compañeros y Maestro Consultivo.
La Clase Consultiva es de 20 minutos (7:40-8:00am) y es llevada acabo los lunes, martes, miércoles, jueves,
y viernes. Un estudiante es requerido estar en su asiento asignada y sentado cada mañana antes que suene la

Consultiva (10 minutos) será marcado AUSENTE, perderá todos los puntos para el día, y enfrentara citatoria y
consecuencias disciplinaria. Además, estudiantes que llegan tarde frecuentemente o están ausentes y no pasan la
Clase Consultiva perderán la elegibilidad para participar en Actividades Estudiantiles, Deportes, Sociedades de Honor, Clubs, etc. y no serán elegibles para la consideración de la Lista de Honor, Cuadro de Honor y/o Lista del Director.

1-2 ausencias – Notificación al padre
3-5 ausencias – Referido al Monitor de Asistencia Estudiantil, puesto en un contrato y asignado a 1 detención después de escuela
6-7 ausencias – Referido al Monitor de Asistencia Estudiantil, 3 detenciones después de escuela y referido al Programa de Citatorios por Ausencias (CUTS)
9-11 ausencias – Referido al Monitor de Asistencia Estudiantil, Infracción Disciplinaria y asignado a
Suspensión Durante la Escuela
12 ausencias o mas – Monitor de Asistencia Estudiantil, Infracción Disciplinaria, clases cerradas y una
audiencia de procedimiento debido de asistencia.
Fairfax High School no excusara a un estudiante tardío por ninguna razón. Las excusas de citas médicas serán
aceptadas por una ausencia con la verificación firmada por el doctor. Un Padre/Tutor puede solicitar por escrito
una ausencia excusada debido a las circunstancias inevitables. La nota debe estar firmada por el padre, indicar
la razón por la petición y debe ser proveída no mas tardar que el día siguiente. Peticiones de excusas continuas
o repetidas no serán honoradas. Cualquier otra ausencia de la Clase Consultiva será repasada individualmente
por el Decano de Estudiantes. Las ausencias excusadas NO SERAN OTORGADAS por quedarse dormido, por
perder el autobús, tráfico, etc.

DUAL ENROLLMENT
SMCC AND FAIRFAX
Dual Enrollment is an opportunity for high school students to get a head start on college.
Dual
enrollment courses allow students to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously during
regular school hours at their high school.
Benefits of dual enrollment:

The credit earned may be transferred to a community college or university
Increases the chance of success in BOTH high school and college.
Save time and/or increase flexibility in the selection of your courses while in college.

Important Dates to Remember:

Tuesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 16—Presentation on dual enrollment will be given
at BFHS by a SMCC representative.

Friday, August 17 and August 27—Dual Enrollment Placement Testing

Friday, August 31—Last day to submit a Tuition Assistant Application

Friday, September 7—Onsite Registration: Enrollment paperwork and payment due

Friday, September 14—Last day to drop a course for the fall term 2012 with a full refund (must
be in writing).

Please note: Student's who have not settled their students account by September 14, 2012 will be
dropped for non-payment.
