My name is Anouk Eman. I am twenty
My name is Anouk Eman. I am twenty-two years of age and I was born in Aruba. I am currently a senior at Lindenwood University with hopes to major in psychology. I’ve been very active from a young age participating in dance, swimming and synchronized swimming. Synchronized swimming has gotten me to where I am today. Through out the years it has thought me time management and how to be a team player. It has also thought me a lot about myself as well. Such as my determination, commitment and that I can get trough tough times. Synchronized Swimming is part of my identity. It calls for flexibility, great strength and not everyone can train in sync with a group of eight swimmers performing while holding their breath upside down underwater going on the same time to the music. I’ve been in and out of competitions in Aruba and in different parts of the world. Preparing for the biggest competition that our team has ever been qualified for, the Aruban federation requested the synchronized swimming head coach of Lindenwood University Lori Eaton to help us prepare for the Pan-American Games. While Coach Eaton was coaching us she saw the skills that I have and offered me the opportunity to swim with her synchronized Swimming team at Lindenwood University. Having a scholarship and an opportunity to train is by far the best thing that has happened to me. Besides sports, I have always been fascinated by the human mind and how it works. Why do certain people behave the way they do? What influences people to interact differently with others? Why do society, culture, attitudes and opinions of other people have such an impact on a person's behavior? To what lengths can we know about ourselves and about what we do? I want to know everything there is to know, to discover the answers, to probe into the minds of the depressed, and to explain the things we do unconsciously. I have always sought after my dreams to become a graduate of such a university that would perceive my capabilities, inspire me to work harder and give me the best educational and enjoyable atmosphere to build up myself. I would be honored to graduate and demonstrate myself with the goal of not only learning, but also raising its name as millions of students had done before me. Lindenwood University is the right place for this. All I personally need is to enhance myself and develop my character in some place with this kind of atmosphere, this standard of education, and this highly applauded reputation. My goal was to become a champion in the United States. My first year swimming for Lindenwood, we ranked 5th place in the nation and my second year my duet partner Reem and I made history. We won the first medal for our school coming in 3rd place in the duet competition, which also led our team winning 3rd place overall. Finally, my third year, I won bronze in the Trio event and also bronze in duet at Collegiate National Championships. Only two weeks after Collegiate, I competed in the duet competition at US National Championships. Now I can say, I accomplished my goal together with my duet partner, Reem Abdalazem from Egypt winning a gold medal in the U.S. National Championships. Our goal with this duet was to not to get 1st, but to have this routine be the talk of the competition and wanting everyone to watch us every time we would swim. Reem and I have a profound chemistry in the water and we sought to do something different with our routine. Never before have I been at an event where so many people told me that they couldn't wait to see our duet. We set out to do something different, not robotic or simple synchro, but something more along the lines of Cirque du Soleil; heavily artistic, emotional, and passionate. The buzz around the pool was all about this routine, so here is where we knew we achieved our goal. Together we have so much passion. This is something I never thought would become reality. Ultimately, my last year swimming for Lindenwood University was very challenging because at the beginning of the season coach Eaton set high standards to win the National Title, which of course means us making history. And so we did! I won two gold medals at Collegiate National Championships in the trio and team event. Only a few weeks later, I won a gold medal in the duet event together with Mary Killman. It was an honor to not only swim with the best synchronized swimmer in the US, but who also represented her country in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. I am very grateful to have been a part of this unforgettable experience as a senior. There was really no other way that would have made my last year more perfect and memorable! Overall, it was a tremendous team effort throughout the season, and proved to be worth it in the end! As for next year, I am planning to pursue my education at Lindenwood University in hopes of completing a master degree as well as coaching the Lindenwood’s University Synchronized Swimming team together with coach Eaton. Now that I achieved my goal; it certainly gives me more hope, and also the physical and mental strength to reach my next and ultimate goal, which is qualifying for the Olympics in 2016. The fulfillment of this dream along with a future career in psychology would be a challenging and rewarding opportunity to acquire the knowledge to inspire people to change their behavior and thinking in a positive way to succeed.
