LOS lucha por prevenir la violencia
RITEWAY HOME REMODELING
por Alejandra Herrera
trad.
“Me enorgullece ver
violencia recibe.
“Justo como muchos de los jóvenes aquí,
damos todo a las pandillas”, señaló Moisés
Morales, uno de los muchos participantes en
el programa A-STRONG-U. Él acotó que pan-

dillas le dieron sentido de pertenencia, dinero
y drogas. “Me gustó la emoción”, agregó Morales. Compartió también que ha estado en
detención juvenil 17 veces. Además, fue a la
secundaria por sólo cuatro meses. “Yo di todo
a las calles. Ellas me dieron poco”, destacó él.
Morales. Actualmente él cursa su GED en el
Colegio Richard J. Daley. “En unos años, me
veo trabajando por mi país”.
“Hay muchos retos como adolescente,
baja autoestima, hallar quién eres. Me han
ofrecido drogas y con orgullo he dicho no”,
dijo Alain Zavala, tutora de LOS. Luego ella
añadió, “No creo que haya drogas que hagan
sentir bien”.

LOS fighting to prevent violence

Latino Organization of the Southwest
(LOS) offers a ray of hope to the community
and the youth. On Feb. 19 at Holy Cross Hospital, located at 2701 W. 68th Street, LOS
hosted an event for the teen participants of
A-STRONG-U, a program designed to prevent violence.
“Everyone sees the notorious side of Chicago,” said David E. Whittaker, executive director of Chicago Area Project. “I’m proud to see
so many parents with their children tonight,”
said Whittaker. He said that the commitment
to our kid’s safety and the commitment to
nurture Chicago goes unseen in comparison

to the attention violence receives.
“Just like many of the youth out here we
give everything to the gangs out here,” said
Moises Morales, one of the many participants of the A-STRONG-U program. He said
that gangs gave him a feeling of belonging,
the money and the drugs. “I liked the excitement,” said Morales.
Morales shared he had been in juvenile
detention 17 times. In addition, he only went
to high school for a total of four months. “I
gave everything to the streets. They gave me
little,” said Morales. He encouraged the youth
to get involved in sports, avoiding joining a
gang.
“Right now I’m working a full-time job. I got
a little chance to make it,” shared Morales.
He is currently getting his GED from Richard
J Daley College. “In a few years I see myself
working for my country,” he said.
“There are many challenges as a teenager,
low self-esteem, finding out who you are. I’ve
been offered drugs and proud to say I said
no,” said Alain Zavala a tutor at LOS. She continued sharing, “I don’t believe you have to do
drugs to feel good.”
LOS community based organization was
founded in 1992 by a core group of immigrant
individuals and is currently the only indigenous Latino organization on the Southwest
side of Chicago. For more information on the

Dominick gana otra vez
por Alejandra Herrera
trad. Víctor Flores
L
nuestra victoria”, dijo Dominick. “Obviamente, a
Enviamos a
“Obviamente, no convencimos a suficiente [gente]”, dijo Ochoa.

he residents of Cicero came out and
voted on Tuesday, Feb. 26, despite the
extreme weather conditions. The elections came to a breaking point when current
Cicero Town President Larry Dominick, took the
lead, as early as 7:38 p.m. that night, with 60
percent of the votes versus Juan Ochoa who
stood at 30 percent and Joseph Pontarelli with
9.49 percent.
“I’m a little upset I didn’t get 70 percent but
we still won. I’m happy with our victory,” said
Dominick. “Obviously the people love what
we’re doing here in Cicero,” he said. Dominick
then explained that the future projects for Cicero will include a Wal-Mart, a dog park and
an animal shelter to name a few.
“Either you’re going to change the next four
years or things can get worse or better,” said
Cesar Diaz, a volunteer for the election. Diaz
also shared that he was going door to door
knocking and reminding the residents that this
election was going to be very important.
Larry Dominick’s election party was a full
house right after the polls closed. His family,
friends, co-workers, volunteers and many residents gathered together at Al’s Restaurant in
the 27th Precinct to celebrate his victory.
“Larry is the best thing that happened to
Cicero,” said Kathy McDonald, a volunteer for
Dominick. She said that she feels her town is
one of the safest in the US.
When asked about opponent Juan Ochoa’s
defeat, State Senator Martin Sandoval said: “The

sent that man packing and back to Berwyn.”
Juan Ochoa said that he believes the
weather “played a role” in his loss, as well
as the fact that people wanted to stay home
rather than go out and vote. “Obviously we
didn’t convince enough [people],” said Ochoa.
“There’s no question I got into this race with
the intention of winning. As a community we
have a long way to go.”
Throughout the day, Cicero residents had
several polling locations where they went and
casted their votes. The voting took place from
5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“158 people came to vote,” shared Election
Judge Margaret Martinotti, who was stationed
at Cicero Stadium in the 7th Precinct. “They
were asking all the Latinos for ID’s,” said Rolando Villegas, a Juan Ochoa volunteer. He
said that soon after he noticed that and it was
reported two lawyers came to the Cicero Stadium and stood inside keeping a close eye on
the election judges at the 7th Precinct.
Esperanza Martinez, an election judge at
Cicero Public Library in the 8th Precinct, said
that 609 people were registered to come to
vote at that location. She also said that a total
of 112 voters had come out and voted during
the day before it was time to close the polls.
“This is my first time voting,” said Jaime
Salinas who walked to the Cicero Public Library to vote for “the other guy from 26th
Street.” He found out that his name was
misspelled in the registration book, it was
spelled Jaime Salinat. A similar situation
had occurred ten times during the day in
the 8th Precinct.
“Very, very happy to see that despite the
weather voters took the time to come out and
vote,” said Cicero Town Clerk Maria PunzoArias. She said that she always believed it was
up to the voters to pick their leader. “They
spoke,” she said. n

Emoción e incertidumbre
en la reforma migratoria
por Abogada Kate Radder
Ley Migratoria Radder
trad.
debate y seguir informados. n

visas for foreign graduates of U.S. universities that have specialized in technology, and
to establish a new migrant worker visa in sectors where it is extremely difficult to obtain
US citizens, such as agriculture.
The exciting debate and the uncertainty of
the actual outcome of any proposed immigration reform legislation can easily lead to the
spreading of inaccurate information. For instance, there are rumors of immigration “professionals” in the Chicago area stating that
there are already new visas and applications
available to undocumented individuals as part
of the reform. However, no bill has been passed
into law. It is my personal hope that comprehensive immigration reform does happen, but
currently, all we can do is to take part in the debate and remain informed. n
T:9”
President Barack Obama promised that in
2013 immigration reform will be a main priority for him. However, inherent in the excitement and hope for many is uncertainty
and trepidation as to whether comprehensive immigration reform will happen and if
so, how it will affect the lives of millions of
people living in the U.S., both citizens and
those without legal status.
The president seems to have several goals
that he would like to see accomplished in
immigration reform. His plan, which was recently leaked to the Miami Herald, focuses
on three main priorities: to provide a way for
certain undocumented individuals to gain legal status in the U.S., to tighten the enforcement of employers that hire undocumented
individuals, and to increase security along the
U.S.-Mexican border. The president has said
that his plan is a backup, but that if immigration reform legislation stalls in Congress, he
may introduce his own immigration bill.
The Congressional persons who have been

Sandoval pidió a Orr recusación
de las elecciones en Cícero
Compilado por Periódico EXTRA
trad.
opone a él”, acotó Sandoval.
Brighton Park, Clearing, Gage Park, Garfield
Ridge, La Villita, West Lawn, y las municipalidades de Bedford Park, Burbank, Cícero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, Stickney, Summit y
Riverside del Oeste de Cook. n
Sandoval called for Orr’s
recusal from Cicero elections
Compiled by Extra Newspaper
State Senator Martin Sandoval, joined by
16th District Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski, called on Feb.26 on Cook County Clerk David Orr to immediately recuse himself from the Cicero elections charging that
Orr has openly taken a partisan political position in an election, in which he is supposed to
be objective and non-partisan.
Sandoval charged that Orr has played a political and partisan role in the municipal elections
in the Town of Cicero, aiding and supporting his
political allies, candidate Juan Ochoa and his
endorsed cohorts including Chicago Alderman
Ricardo Munoz, Cook County Commissioner
Jesus Garcia and U.S. Representative Luis Gutierrez. Sandoval charged that Orr has donated
thousands of dollars to candidates actively involved in the Ochoa campaign, which creates a
direct conflict of interest.
Sandoval, who is vice chairman of the Illinois Senate Committee on Local Government,
said he will call for public hearings to examine
Orr’s conduct in this election and in past elections, and will be filling legislation to eliminate
the elected office of Cook County Clerk, making it a separate, non-partisan agency similar
to the Chicago Board of Elections.
“David Orr’s conduct and conflict of interest has tainted this election in Cicero. David
Orr is politically partisan and has and continues to use public resources to support his
political allies to work against those he opposes,” said Sandoval. Senator Sandoval represents the 11th Senate District, which includes the neighborhoods of Brighton Park, Clearing, Gage Park,
Garfield Ridge, Little Village, West Lawn, and
West Cook municipalities of Bedford Park,
Burbank, Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook,
Stickney, Summit and Riverside. n

Luna Negra Dance Theater presenta “Hecho

a poder comparar o simplemente disfrutar

y cautivadora. ”Presente” es el nombre
que ha elegido para su nueva coreografía.

Luna Negra Dance Theater will present
“Made in Spain” at the Harris Theater for
Music and Dance at 205 E. Randolph St.
on March 9, 2013. “Made in Spain” will include two world premieres and the return
of 2011’s highly successful “Naked Ape.”
Choreographed by Fernando Hernando
Magadan, “Naked Aped” was created in collaboration with the multimedia artist Harmen Straatman. Set to the music of Erik
Truffaz Murcof, J.S. Bach and Jónsi & Alex,
“Naked Ape” explores the effects of technological advances on human interaction.
The dancers create relationships not only
amongst themselves, but also with lighted
sculptures that are part of the set. Hernando Magadan’s world premiere “Royal Road”
will include live on-stage accompaniment
from the legendary Turtle Island Quartet.
“This piece reflects the marriage between music and dance,” said Artistic Director Gustavo Ramírez Sansano. Music
and choreograph notation are utilized on
stage to enhance the interaction between
the two disciplines.
With the success of her last piece “Requiem,” company dancer Mónica Cervantes
will take part in a world premiere for Luna
Negra, titled “Presente,” the urgency of
the present moment. “We think about the
future and the past, but we forget about today,” said Cervantes. “What I miss from my
adolescence is the freedom of forgetting
the consequences and simply living day to
day,” said Cervantes. She admits to working
on finding this freedom in her daily life and
draws inspiration from this work to inject
into this new creation. “Presente” is based
on Max Richter’s recomposed Vivaldi’s
“Four Seasons.”
As Ramírez Sansano continues to raise
the bar with Luna Negra’s talented group
of dancers, he ensured that the program
will be “a good surprise”. What is clear is
that “Made in Spain” will be, “Made in Luna

Me
enamoré de Última a primera vista. Me
encantan las mujeres como Última. Las
he visto en mi propia familia y comunidad.

Colón falls in love with
character in ‘Bless Me, Ultima’
by Kiko Martinez
In “Bless Me, Ultima,” celebrated Puerto Rican actress Miriam Colón (“Scarface”) plays
the title character, a curandera who brings her
powers to heal to a village when she moves in
with a local family. Based on the well-known
1972 novel of the same name by Rudolfo Anaya, the coming-of-age story is considered by
many as one of the most important pieces of
Chicano literature ever written.
EXTRA: Were you already familiar with
Anaya’s novel?
Miriam Colón: No. When I read about the
film I started reading more information and
importantes.
alto respeto.
learned that it was a famous novel. I started
reading the script and then someone brought
me the book and I loved it.
What is it about the novel that has resonated with so many people over the years?
The book speaks about people with great
courage, simplicity and honesty. What is
amazing is that you really care about the family [in the novel]. You care about their code of
honor and their relationships with each other.
They secretly long to bring change to their
lives. It’s very touching.
Was there added pressure on you as an
actress to capture the story in a way that
would make readers happy, since this novel
has such a strong following?
I always go into a role with great care because I never want to miss any of the traits,
especially with Ultima. I wanted to make her
an exemplary and admirable woman. I fell in
love with Ultima at first sight. I love women
like Ultima. I have seen them in my own family and community. They hold ideas in their
hearts that are sacred and important. To
me, women like Ultima are the ones who are
holding up our society and our families.
Growing up with women like Ultima in your
life, were you familiar with the healing
practices she uses from her culture?
Sure, treating people with herbs and
branches and plants was something very
natural. As a child, I remember my mother
taking me to see a woman that lived in the
outskirts of town. She was highly respected. She was not a mysterious woman. You
would bring the branches she gave you
home. You would boil them and bathe in
them. It was very healing. n

Guía de préstamos estudiantiles privados
por Brian Schiller
trad.

The federal government offers financial
assistance through the Free Application for
Student Aid (FAFSA) but often federal aid
isn’t enough and students will have to find
other means to pay for their education.
Most of your cost will be covered by federal aid, such as student loans, grants, and
for some students, scholarships. However,
today with the high cost of a college education, the available aid is not enough to pay
for tuition, books, room and board, leaving
students with limited options to cover their
education costs. Most students will hold
part time jobs and may even receive help
from their parents.
To cover the larger costs, a private student loan may be a viable option. Student
loans by private banks will often offer
higher interest rates and most students
will need a co-signer to be approved, but
the immediate funding will put students’
minds and concerns at ease. A student loan
to supplement the remainder of the educational costs will offer a peace of mind on financing their tuition so they can fully focus
on education.
To find these loans you can utilize the Internet and browse the different banks that
offer student loans. Once you have found a
bank that you feel will supply you with the

As college decision season is near, many
anxious high school seniors look back on the
demanding processes that they underwent
in preparation for applying to college, while
younger students anticipate the similar ordeals yet awaiting them. Along with a student’s GPA, extracurricular activities, essays
and teacher recommendations, one of the
factors that can make or break a college admissions decision is the SAT/ACT score.
“If you’re trying to get into a competitive
college, then you need to take these standardized tests seriously, because they are a measurement that the colleges are going to use to
determine whether or not to admit you,” said
Ethan Mann, director of Levels Teen Center in
Great Neck, New York, who also administers a
professional SAT course.
The SAT takes three hours and 45 minutes
to complete and is divided into three sections:
Writing, Critical Reading and Math. While the
majority of the test is in multiple choice format, the essay and a portion of the Math section require written answers.
The ACT, on the other hand, is divided into
five sections: English, Math, Reading, Science
and Writing (optional). The test is shorter
“If you’re trying to
get into a competitive college, then
you need to take
these standardized
tests seriously,”
— Ethan Mann
- three hours and 25 minutes, including the
optional Writing section, but covers much of
the same material as the SAT.
“Vocabulary, punctuation, grammar, reading comprehension - they’re tested differently, in different styles by the tests, but the
two tests are intended to test the same skills,”
says Mann, who also specializes in Critical
Reading.
There are different ways to prepare for the
SAT and ACT tests, including professional
courses, such as Princeton Review and Kaplan private tutors, online “Questions of the
Day,” books with practice tests and, in some
cases, courses offered by high schools.
“I think it’s something that you can get better with, with practice,” says 18-year-old Sarah Miller, a freshman at Northwestern University who took the ACT five times during her
school career. “The more times you take it,
the better you do”
Seventeen-year-old Lauren Eiden has taken similar measures to ensure success on
her ACT test. Now a senior at Deerfield High
School, Eiden took a practice test every week
from October to June of her junior year, until
she reached her goal score. “You just need
to study, remember it for the test, and afterwards you can really forget it,” said Eiden.
In addition to helping clients familiarize
themselves with the tests, programs and tutors will often offer special techniques and
tricks to help students “beat” the test.
“If I teach you the proper use of a semicolon,
that’s applicable to both tests. If I teach you a
vocabulary word, it’s applicable to both tests,”
said Mann.
The SAT’s maximum score is 2400, which is
up to 800 per section; the maximum ACT score
is 36. The tests are offered several times a year
and can be registered for online. For more information on the SAT and ACT tests, visit: www.

La Junta Educativa de Chicago considera
nueva política en educación de la salud
Compilado por Periódico EXTRA
trad.

Chicago Board of Education to consider
new health education policy
Compiled by EXTRA Newspaper
A new sexual health education policy,
framed around age-appropriate instruction
and medically accurate information for all
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students, will be
presented to the Chicago Board of Education
next week. The recommended policy would
make CPS the largest urban U.S. school district with an established and comprehensive
sexual health education curriculum specifically designed for every grade level to ensure
age-appropriate material.
“It is important that we provide students of
all ages with accurate and appropriate information so they can make healthy choices in
regards to their social interactions, behaviors,
and relationships,” said CPS CEO Barbara ByrdBennett. “By implementing a new sexual health
education policy, we will be helping them to
build a foundation of knowledge that can guide
them not just in the pre-adolescent and adoles-
cent years, but throughout their lives.”
The proposed policy would align with the
new national standards and supports priorities in both President Obama’s national HIV/
AIDS strategy and Mayor Emanuel’s Healthy
Chicago initiative. It would replace the District’s older Family Life and Comprehensive
Sexual Health Education policy, which was
approved in 2008.The proposed new policy
breaks down instruction to conform to specific age groups. For K-4 students, instruction will center on anatomy and physiology,
reproduction, healthy relationships and
personal safety.
Under the policy, principals will designate a
minimum of two of their teachers to deliver
sexual health education instruction in their
schools. Those teachers would be trained to
ensure that instruction follows District-wide
standards and that the instructors themselves are proficient in the curriculum content and delivery.
The proposed policy conforms to the Mayor’s
Healthy Chicago public health agenda, which
includes developing medically accurate sexual
health education in public schools, providing annual targeted education and screening
around STIs to high school students, reducing
the city’s teen birth rate, and reducing the rate
of youths who experience teen dating violence.
The proposed policy was developed by the
CPS Office of Student Health and Wellness
(OSHW). The proposed policy envisions a
three-year implementation. Year one focuses
on training of instructors; Year two continues
training, monitors implementation of the policy and provides schools and instructors with
technical assistance and support through
OSHW; and Year three sees two trained instructors at each school and full implementation of the policy across the District.
The Chicago Public Schools serves approximately 403,000 students in 681 schools. It is
the nation’s third-largest school system. n

Nuevo programa
para estudiantes latinos
por Brian Schiller
trad.
computacional. n
New program for latino students
by Brian Schiller
Aspira Inc. and St. Augustine College have
partnered up to increase the number of Latinos in higher education and the construction
industry. This new program, beginning March
4, will start with the YouthBuild Humboldt
Park Program launched to prepare community youth to successfully complete their GED
or High School Diploma, transition students
to a higher education, and help them start a
career in the construction industry.
“The staff and students at Aspira YouthBuild Project are extremely excited about
our partnership with St. Augustine College
on the YouthBuild Project. It will provide our
students with the skills, discipline, and certification necessary to move to the next phases
in their lives,” said Dr. Martha Zurita, principal
of Antonia Pantoja High School.
To qualify for this program, students
must be 16 to 24 years of age, test at least a
9th grade level in reading and math, and receive 800 hours of instruction in areas that
include academic and occupational skills,
on-the-job-training, community service and
leadership development. Unlike any other
training programs, participants will acquire
hands on construction experience working
on affordable housing projects and obtain
marketable certifications from OSHA, EPA,
and the National Center for Construction
and Research (NCCER).
“At this time of high unemployment, this
program will pave the way to a better future
for our youth and we are proud to stand to be
part of this initiative,” said Andrew C. Sund,
president of St. Augustine College.
The first phas, called “mental toughness”, will
start in the middle of March. It will help transition
students to work in the real work environment.
Counselors will mentor students throughout
their educational career, helping them from the
day they walk through the door, to find a job,
and begin their career. Overall there is a three
year introductory plan for this program and the
idea is to expand in career fields, such as health
and computer training. n

¿Dónde quedará Manti Te’o
en el reclutamiento de la NFL 2013?
por Gabe Salgado
trad.
equipo. Sus números en colegial hablan por
sí mismos – 437 tacleadas, 8.5 atrapadas, 7
intercepciones y 2 balones sueltos forzados.
Heading into the NFL Scouting Combine last weekend, Notre Dame linebacker
Manti Te’o was heralded as a top 10 prospect at the position. Despite his poor performance in the BCS National Championship game in January, he was still listed
as a sure fire first round pick. Some had
said he could be the one to replace the recently retired Ray Lewis of the Baltimore
Ravens. It was reported that some of the
other teams that run 3-4 defenses were
also interested.
The Chicago Bears had also expressed
interest in Te’o as a potential replacement

for Brian Urlacher should the latter retire
or sign with another team. His college numbers speak for themselves - 437 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, 7 interceptions, and 2 forced
fumbles. But all of that was thrown out the
window when it was time to perform in front
of NFL scouts and executives in Indianapolis last week.
The first part of the combine was probably the most difficult. Facing the media
and once again answering questions about
the ex-girlfriend hoax that made worldwide
headlines. While everyone was looking forward to his combine performance, it didn’t
exactly turn out the way anyone had hoped.
And after not living up to the expectations,
Manti Te’o may have pushed himself out of
the first round and maybe further.
For starters, his height was measured at
6’1” and weighed in at 241 pounds. That’s
a far cry from the 6’2”, 255 pounds that
Notre Dame’s athletic department had
him listed. He decided not to participate
in the 225-pound bench press because of
his claims that he had a stinger in his left
shoulder.
Manti Te’o’s 40-yard-dash time was forgettable. He ran a dismal 4.82 and ranked
20th out of 26 linebackers in that category.
He ran a 4.27 in the 20-yard shuttle run,
7.13 in the three cone drill, he measured a 33
inch vertical leap, and a 9-foot 5-inch standing broad jump.
The Hawaiian native will have one last
chance to get back into the good graces of
NFL brass when Notre Dame has its pro day
on March 26. Te’o will need a strong performance in order to salvage his draft stock. n
