Title
3rd Network meeting – Use of olive stones in modern automatic boilers
Topics of the event:
Possibilities to use olive stones (residues) in biomass boiler at private home in standard
biomass boiler.
Short summary: (aims and goals of the meeting, methods, contents, results)
The contents were:
-Presentation of the general topic of MixBioPells, and its aims, by Steven Trogisch (Protecma)
-Explaination of the characterisitics of olive stones, by CTAER. Stevent Trogisch informs about
ongoing analysis of a olive stone sample.
-Analysis by Hargassner concerning the standard biomass boiler (Classic 15 kW) (Alfonso Martín,
Hargassner Ibérica, Spain)
-Definition of at least one pilot project
The method used was an open table discussion, where each participant brought in his / her
experience. The table was moderated by Steven Trogisch.
The results of the meeting were:
Protecma send the results of the olive stone analysis to all participants as soon as they are
finished..
It is a fact, that there is little reliable information available concerning following issues: i)
changing quality of the raw material (moisture, additional disturbing components as the flesh
of the olives, …), ii) combustion and corrosion within the boiler and iii) emissions. Work has to
be done to focus on this.
Julio Berbel proposes a project to install a pellet boiler as field trial within his new house,
using a boiler from Hargassner, model Classic 15 kW. By this way, we can gain interesting
information on the day to day functioning from the point of view of an end user.
Further, CTAER also proposes to use a Classic boiler in its institute in Jaén. The objective
would be to make more detailed analysis on combustion and emission aspects, as well as on
the different fuel qualities.
Hargassner Ibérica will provide the boilers for testing purposes.
The results of the bilateral meeting with Biomasa Peninsular in Madrid, 7.2.2012
The aim of the follow up meeting was to establish the next steps. The characteristics of the
boilers and test sites were discussed. Finally the recommendation was to install a 12 kW
boiler, manufactured by Hargassner, model Classic 12, to be filled up manually. The
schematic of the installation was revised and approved, For the field trials a Classic 15,
aspiration, was selected. The orders of both boilers have been made.
The start up of the end user test boiler is planned for the end of March 2012, and for the CTAER for
mid April, parallel to the next meeting

Bilateral meeting with Biomasa Peninsular in Madrid: 7th February 2012
Follow up meeting in Jaén, planned for 18.4.2012
Topic of the meeting: Possibilities to use olive stones (residues) in biomass boiler at private
home in standard biomass boiler.
Introduction: Steven Trogisch introduced each other.
The aims of the meeting where to discuss with the participants the possibilities for using olive
stones as fuel within standard automatic boilers. The aim was not to include basic semi manual
devices, which basically wouldn’t offer an end user the comfort it would expect. Further, also
specifically developed boilers would also not be considered, as the group estimated as more
realistic due to the easier implementation.
The method used was to find out what the colleagues from CTAER and Biomasa del Guadalquivir
had to say concerning their experience with the topic.
