August 14, 2016 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1883-2016 Prayer for the Assumption of Mary Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives You praise, for all life and all holiness come from You. In the plan of Your wisdom, she who bore the Christ in her womb, was raised body and soul in glory to be with Him in heaven. May we follow her example in reflecting Your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor: Reverend G. At Masses around the world every day, millions of people, in the words of the gospel, ―eat and drink‖ with the Lord—would Jesus disown any of them, the way the master does in the gospel story? Maybe more than most folks would assume. He didn’t want followers who tagged along for a meal and a few pieces of wisdom; he wanted disciples to walk next to him on the hard road to Jerusalem and beyond. Not merely people to ―do‖ the ritual and say that’s good enough but those willing to embrace him, his Way, and his fate. Which one of those people will you be? WHERE WE LIVE, SERVE, & WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH. ST. JOSEPH’S PAG E TW O . . . . . . . FROM THE PASTOR . . . . . . . . My Dear Parish Family, . . . Summer is certainly flying by at breakneck speed. It seems like . just a couple weeks ago we were welcoming Deacon Tom Barry to . . our parish. Deacon Tom has finished his time with us, for now, and . . will be returning to Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton . . Hall for his last year of theological study before being ordained to . . the Holy Priesthood in June, 2017. Throughout this school year, . Deacon will be coming to St. Joseph’s each weekend and assisting .. us with his presence at Mass, Baptisms and possibly a presentation .. . or two on an aspect of our faith. Please keep him in your prayers. . . Another change took place in our parish office staff. Mrs. Jackie . . Mack, our parish business manager, retired after approximately 9 . years of serving our parish. We thank Jackie for her tireless service .. . and wish her well in retirement (and the golf course with her hus. . band!) Mr. Tom McMahon has assumed the business manager . . position. Tom is a parishioner and longtime resident of Toms . . River. He comes to us highly recommended and we are happy to . welcome him onto our parish staff. . . . Last week, I took the opportunity to visit our Donovan Summer . Soccer camp out at the sports fields at Whitty Road. It was a beau- .. . tiful day with so many young folks out and enjoying the sport and . learning more. I also attended the Donovan’s summer musical per- .. formance of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” Once again, I . . . was amazed at the talent of our young people and the staff and . coaches that work with them! Well done! . . . God bless you all. . . . Fr. Scott . There is no wood better to kindle the fire of holy love than the wood of the cross, which Christ used for his own great sacrifice of boundless charity. —Saint Ignatius Please be mindful that the Parish Office will have shortened hours on Fridays during the month of August. The Scribes and Pharisees brought forward a woman who had committed adultery. The law of Moses required that such a woman should be stoned to death. The Lord Jesus knew the law and its demands and was well aware that those leaders were testing him. He remained quiet in the face of their accusation and test, bent down to write something on the ground, and became the focus of their persistence. He stood up, glanced around at the crowd and uttered his famous words, ―Let the one without sin be the first to cast a stone at her.‖ No stones were lifted, the crowd dispersed and in that moment, in the encounter of the Lord Jesus with this sinful woman, mercy and truth met. The Lord Jesus looked at her and asked ―Has no one condemned you?‖ ―No one, Lord,‖ she answered. ―Neither do I condemn you.‖ ―Go. From now on, sin no more (John 8: 10-11).‖ Notice that the law was clear. The Lord Jesus did not deny the truth of its demands nor did he change the ―law.‖ Notice, too, that the adulterous woman did not deny the truth of the accusation and asked for nothing. She did not earn forgiveness or even ask for it. The Lord Jesus, however, did not condemn her as he confronted the truth of her situation. The Lord Jesus showed her mercy. And then he sent her on her way, without compromise, reminding her to follow truth.
