Superintendent's Message:
Please contact the school if you would like a copy of the school uniform
policy that will continue for the 2010-2011 school term. Please review the policy
BEFORE you purchase school clothes this fall. We will be following the
uniform/dress code on the first day of school – August 25, 2010. Please call for
any clarifications or bring in clothes for review if you would like a 2nd opinion.
Again, students will be required to wear the appropriate clothing beginning on the
first day of school this fall.
The local area asphalt plant is tentatively scheduled to open on April 14th.

The parking lot(s) will be closer to completion once the asphalt can be applied.
Our goal is to have the landscaping done prior to 8th grade promotion in June. We
hope that all we have left to complete, during the summer break, is the
reinstallation of the old playground equipment.
The newly adopted 2010-2011 school calendar will soon be posted on the
district’s web site. Hard copies will also be available in the school office.

special session. However, we know that we will need to make 2010 – 2011 budget
reductions but the extent is not known yet. Please be patient with us as we work on
the upcoming 2010-2011 budgets. Our goal is to provide a more detailed budget
report in the final newsletter of the school year.

The Union Gap School District’s expenditures are distributed as follows:
68% Teaching and Teaching Support, which represents classroom teachers, paraeducators, textbooks, classroom supplies, libraries, guidance and counseling and health
services.
22% Support Service, which represents the non-teaching activities required to keep the
district running – food services, building and grounds maintenance, custodians, technology
services, pupil transportation, utilities and insurance.

Central Administration/School Board, which provides the general direction,
regulation and control of the affairs of the school district, as well as instructional support to
the schools

Building Administration; principal, assistant principal and secretarial staff assigned
to coordinate, lead and support the school.
Congratulations to Mr. Chris Wertenberger, for being selected to receive the Community Leadership
Award for his unrelenting contributions to education and more specifically to the Union Gap School District.
The annual award is sponsored by ESD 105, each regional area school district within the ESD boundaries
and the Washington Association of School Administrators. Chris will be recognized at a May banquet
where a number of other area honorees will be honored.
May 3 – 9, 2010 is National Teacher Appreciation Week. Please pass on
a thank you to all the dedicated teachers working in our school system!

A Message from the Union Gap Police Department:
Periodically, the Union Gap Police Department may bring in a canine police dog to inspect
the school facilities. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Officer Hector
Rivera 248-3966.

Por favor entre en contacto con la escuela si usted quiere una copia de la política del uniforme escolar
que continuará para el año escolar 2010-2011. Por favor repase la política ANTES de que usted compre la
ropa para sus hijos para cuando empiecen la escuela en el otoño. Seguiremos el uniforme/código de
vestimenta el primer día de escuela - 25 de agosto de 2010. Pida por favor cualquier clarificación o traiga la

Gym Parking Lot
The parking lot near the gym is completed and open for business. PLEASE follow the arrows and please park
in parking spaces versus dropping off/picking up your child in the middle of the traffic lane. The gym
parking lot was not designed as a “drive through” pick up/drop off area like what was installed in the front of
the school. Again, please physically park your vehicle in a parking space when picking up/dropping off
your child and please also follow the arrows around the lot. Your cooperation will provide a safer parking
area for yourself and the children. Thank you for your understanding.

Summer School will be held from June 28th through July 29th, Monday
through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Free Breakfast and Lunch will be
provided to all students. There will be no latchkey services during summer
school.
Registration is by teacher referral only.
The Kindergarten Academy is open to new in-district kindergarten students.

Summer Food Program:
The Union Gap School District will participate in the Simplified Summer Food
Program for Children this summer beginning June 28th through July 30th. All
children that reside in Union Gap under the age of 18 qualify for free breakfast
and lunch. Breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 9:00 am and lunch from 11:15 to
12:30 pm. All meals are available without regard to race, color, national origin,
sex, age or disability. For further information or questions, please contact Desi

Dear Parent/Guardian:
There are 3 new vaccine requirements for students entering school in the Fall of 2010.
Tdap - Children attending 6th thru 9th grade will be required to show proof of Tdap (tetanus, diptheria,and
pertussis) vaccination if it has been five years since receiving a tetanus-containing vaccine (DTaP, DT, or Td).
MMR – Children attending Kindergarten through 12th grade are required to show proof of vaccination with 2
doses of MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine.
Chickenpox(Varicella) – Children attending 3rd thru 6th grade are required to show proof of vaccination with
1 dose of Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine at or after the 1st birthday, or physician report that they have had
chickenpox. For grades Kindergarten thru 2nd, 2 doses of Varicella vaccine, or proof of immunity, are also
required.
1. Please check with your physician to determine if your child has received all of the required immunizations.
We encourage you to get this done as soon as possible before the rush in the Fall. Please bring your updated
vaccine record to the nurse at school so we can note the changes. Parents wishing to refuse the vaccinations
must do so on a form available from the school nurse. If your child has a history of chickenpox, parent
reported history of a disease cannot be accepted. Your physician must provide the school with written
documentation of your child’s immunity.
We are also required to inform you about Meningococcal Vaccine for students entering sixth grade and older.
This vaccination is not required for school attendance.
Young people are particularly susceptible to meningococcal disease or meningitis, which can be fatal to a
fourth of the adolescents infected with the disease. Survivors may suffer long-term disabilities, including
brain damage, hearing loss, kidney disease, and limb amputations. The Department of Health wants you to be
aware of Meningococcal Meningitis and the availability of the vaccine to protect against the disease. This
vaccination can protect against 83% of the meningococcal disease cases occurring among adolescents and
young adults.
We encourage you to speak to your children about good hygiene, including the importance of hand washing,
and to warn them about sharing personal items, such as lip-gloss, toothbrushes, or sharing bites of food.

As of July1, 2005 schools are required to provide meningococcal information beginning with
sixth grade entry to students and parents in our community.
Meningococcal disease, commonly known as meningococcal meningitis strikes up to 3,000
adolescents and adults in the U.S. each year. Adolescents and young adults have an
increased rate of contracting this disease compared to the general population, accounting for
nearly 30 percent of all U.S. cases annually. According to one study, as many as one out of
every four adolescents infected with the disease may die. Of those who survive, up to 20
percent suffer long-term disabilities, including brain damage, hearing loss, kidney disease
and limb amputations.
The Department of Health wants you to be aware of meningococcal meningitis and the
availability of a vaccine to protect against the disease. Vaccination can help protect against

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Union Gap School began registering students for kindergarten for the 2010-2011 school year
March 15th. Registration will be ongoing for the remainder of this school year from 9 a.m. to
3 p.m.
According to state law, a child must be 5 years of age on or before August 31, to be
eligible for kindergarten. A birth certificate, proof of address and a completed certificate of
immunization are required.
You need to bring the following documents with you when you enroll your child:
 Birth Certificate, verifying child's age
 Immunization Record – please be sure your child is current with their immunizations.
 2 pieces of Proof of Residence (mortgage/rental agreement and current light bill, cable
bill or land line telephone bill)
If you have any questions about registration, call Union Gap School's main office at
248-3966. Out-of-district kindergarten students may not be officially allowed to enroll until
approximately September 2, 2010.

La Salle High School (serving students in grades 9-12) is still taking applications for the upcoming
2010-11 school year. If your son or daughter is interested in applying, or if you’d like to receive more
information, please call Gloria White in the Admissions Office at (509) 225-2928. She is available to
answer any questions anytime, and can schedule student shadow visits and/or family campus tours,
as well. Information is available in English and/or Spanish.

on May 28th at the Yakima Convention Center. Union Gap Hispanic
students in grades 6 through 8th grade who maintain a 3.0 grade point

Summer School for students who were referred by teacher
The April 26th American Red Cross Blood Drive, that was going to be hosted by
the Union Gap School District, was cancelled and will be rescheduled this fall.
The American Red Cross apologizes for the cancellation but is looking forward
to a great blood drive this fall.
2010 Census
Please fill out and mail in your 2010 Census if you have not already done so. The census
count dictates funding levels for schools as well as other public programs. It only takes a
few minutes to fill out and the tabulated results will affect our area for the next ten years.
Federal law requires that you complete and return the census form however, for your
protection, information collected is kept confidential and not shared with any outside
agencies. Thank you.
K-Kids in Action
A few years ago, Union Gap School had a
service club called K-Kids and this year the club is
back up and running at full speed. The K-Kids are
sponsored by the Kamiakin Kiwanis Club of Yakima.
K-Kids is the largest service organization for elementary students worldwide. It is a student-led community
service club that teaches leadership through helping
others. At Union Gap School, we have twenty students
in grades 3-5 who have been very dedicated to the club
all year.
Beginning in the fall, Union Gap K-Kids started planning and getting organized for several
service projects. The club performed Christmas carols at Parkside Nursing home and passed out cookies
decorated by the Union Gap teachers. For Valentines Day, the K-Kids put together little gifts for the
Parkside residents and helped make cards for them too. The K-Kids also decided to take on a “green
fundraiser” to earn money for service projects and to help protect the environment at the same time.
In March, the Union Gap K-Kids were honored by the Kamiakin Kiwanis through a chartering
ceremony. Because our group has shown such dedication, The Kiwanis paid for us to become an official
branch of the K-Kids organization. They, along with ASB, also purchased K-Kids t-shirts for our group.
The K-Kids are now gearing up to
finish the year with some great projects and
are excited about all the possibilities for
years to come. In the meantime, we
welcome any donations you may have for
our fundraiser. These items include
(working or not working): cell phones,
laptops, digital cameras, MP3s/Ipods, and
ink cartridges. Also, if your child is
interested in joining the club next year,
please contact the K-Kids’ advisor, Nicki
Monsen (Elementary Counselor 248-3966
ext. 307).
Pest Control Within the Schools
The Union Gap School District contracts with an outside agency to keep pests such as ants, mice
and termites, out of the buildings.
A minimum of 48-hour notification is made to inform the public by posting the time of the pest
control application on the doors of the main entrances of the school.

EPIC HEAD START CLASSROOM LOCATED AT UNION GAP SCHOOL
is currently enrolling children for 10/11 school year.

Your Student's Lunch Account
Your child’s lunch balance rolls over from year-to-year, so if there is a negative balance at the
end of the school year, it will still be there at the beginning of the next school year.
If you have an 8th grade student heading for high school in the fall, make sure to pay off any
lunch charges he/she has acquired.
