TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION RSVP by Monday, April, 25, 2016 From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. —Rev. Readings for Next Sunday - April 17, 2016 Third Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 13:14, 43-52 Second Reading: Revelation 7:9, 14b-17 Gospel: John 10:27-30 A Reading from the book of Acts Paul and Barnabas continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered the synagogue and took their seats. Many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God. On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us, I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.” The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium. The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit A reading from the book of Revelation I, John, had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. Then one of the elders said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. “For this reason they stand before God’s throne and worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. For the Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of life-giving water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.” \ Tercer Domingo de Pascua | 10 de abril del 2016 5 St. Hilary Church of Perpetual Adoration | www.St-Hilary.com 6 This Week’s Parish Events Eventos Parroquiales de la Semana Sunday, April 10 - Saturday, April 16, 2016 Facility Facilidad Sunday domingo 10 CHURCH Monday lunes Tuesday martes Wednesday Thursday miércoles jueves 11 12 13 14 7:00-9:00PM Baptism Class 7:00-8:30 PM Divine Mercy 8:00-8:30PM Wedding Rehearsal 7:00-10:00 Adoración Friday viernes 15 Saturday sábado 16 1:30PM Baptism 2:30PM Baptism 3:00PM Wedding IGLESIA PARISH HALL 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 6:00AM-9:00PM Confirmation/ Life Teen 7:00-9:00PM Divina Misericordia 6:50-9:20PM El Instituto Bíblico 7:00-9:00 PM Conquistadores en Cristo 6:00-9:00PM Spanish Bible Study 6:30-10:00PM Grupo de Oración 9:00–12:00AM School 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 9:30AM to 12:30PM RCIA 8:00AM-12:00PM Legion of Mary 9:00AM to 12:00PM Reserved F/O 6:30-9:00PM RICA 7:00–8:00 PM Grupo de Oración 10:00AM-Noon 12:00PM Al-Anon 10:00-11:30AM AA SALÓN LOUNGE SALA School Library 6:00-8:00 PM Conquistadores en Cristo 6 6:00-7:30PM Grupo de Oración 12 13 14 15 16 Open 7:00-8:00PM Children’s Faith Formation 7:00-9:00PM Al-Anon Nueva Vida 6:00-8:30PM Al-Anon 7:00-9:00PM Alabanza Grupo de Oración Open Open 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 Open 7:00–9:00PM Grupo de Oración 7:00–9:00PM Boy Scouts 6:00–9:00PM Coro de Niño's 7:00-9:00PM S.I.N.E 6:00–9:00PM Adult Spanish Choir Open 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 Open Open 7:00–8:00PM Divina Misericordia Open Open 6:30–10:00PM Grupo de Oración Open 5 SALÓN 2:00-4:00PM Al-Anon 11 SALÓN ROOM 7:30-9:30PM Together In Christ 10 Biblioteca Escolar ROOM (Música) 7:00-9:00PM Men's Fellowship (English) Protecting God's Children™ Program As part of our commitment to the safety of our children, all volunteers must complete VIRTUS® Certification. —Fray Gilberto CavazosGlz, OFM Copyright © J. Armando was a well-known and valued member of the St. Hilary’s community having served as head usher for many years, as a companion to Fr. Joshua Lee in providing healing Masses across the dioceses and active as a 4th degree Knight of Columbus. Everyone knew that should there be a need, he could always be counted on to provide support, to fill in as needed or be available to accompany one and lend a sympathetic ear. Armando was born on May 8, 1941 in Los Angeles and raised in East Los Angeles. He attended Virgil Junior High School and went on to graduate from Garfield High School. It was at Garfield that he was first introduced to printing, a trade that he eventually pursued with advanced classes at LA Trade Tech. He worked many years in the printing industry and became a master printer and craftsman. Throughout his life, Armando valued and appreciated the craft and work of printers. His was a keen eye for print and the effort and expertise required to produce quality products. Armando loved Corvettes and classic cars. He was a regular at local classic car shows and was a proud owner of a classic 1995 Chevy Impala. He met the love of his life, Rosemarie Pallan while both were students at Garfield. They married in 1964 and were blessed to celebrate 50+ years of marriage. They have two daughters Yvette and Annette and had a son that died in infancy. Armando has four grandchildren, James Jessica and Julie Tanner and Nathaniel Gomez and a greatgrandchild, Emma. He was a loving and giving father and grandfather, known for his famous barbequed steaks, love of mariachis, Lady Gaga, martinis and ice cream. He loved telling stories and events without missing any minute detail or element. Armando developed many friends over the years. All will miss his characteristic “what’s happening” greeting followed by that infectious smile. Rosary for Armando Martinez will be held on Friday, April 15th at 7:00 p.m. here at St. Hilary, with a funeral Mass on Saturday, April 16th at 9:00 a.m. Immediately following the funeral mass, internment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
