De su puño y letra, a través de sus recientes memorias tituladas ¿He There will always be models, but the ‘supermodel’ was unique to the 90s. Today, fashion seems to have become infatuated with new faces it then precipitously discards. Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss all had staying power. Known as the ‘Big Six’, the world’s fascination with the supermodel gave these women a hitherto-unknown celebrity status that extended their careers well past the age when most models disappear from public life on the arm of a Premier League footballer. Blessed with never-ending legs, manes of gleaming hair and flawless make-up, they were the women we all wanted to be. Their allure had more to do with an imposing presence, rather than the irreverence we associate with catwalk stars of today such as Cara Delevingne. Even their flaws – such as the mole on Crawford’s cheek – were part of their perfection. Whether horseback riding, dancing in a disco, taking ballet lessons or simply strolling through an airport, each of these Amazons was at just the right place at just the right time to be discovered by a top modelling agent – such as the legendary Carole White whose recent memoir Have I Said Too Much? is packed with anecdotes about these catwalk legends. White – who turned down a young Kate Moss at the start of her career – has lifted the lid on some of the more outlandish behaviour she witnessed from these divas, though she is too discreet to name names. Memories of having to fly in a special kind of green candle from Tibet to satisfy a supermodel’s whim share pages with Linda Evangelista’s immortal line, ‘I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.’ According to White, this was a joke that the media took out of context. What can’t be quite so easily explained away is the tale in which, after a long night of partying, two supermodels decided to sleep it off on a bench in the centre of Paris. Karl Lagerfeld just had to wait to start his Chanel show, as they drunkenly slumbered. Reading this is a bit of a relief, because it shows no one is as perfect as they seem – but then, just as Cindy’s mole gave her character, even bad behaviour was part of the supermodel’s allure.
