That’s why it’s critical that you continue to participate importantes de tránsito y de la interestatal. Por esta razón, in our community outreach program. su continua participación es crítica en nuestro programa de alcance comunitario. Your thoughtful input has played a critical role in determining the direction of this project, the interstate and transit alternatives under consideration, and how they’re being analyzed. In the upcoming months, the project team will recommend which transit and interstate alternatives remain under consideration, and your thoughts will continue to help shape what happens. What is the I-70 East Corridor EIS? • Decides which transportation projects, if any, will be built • Involves I-70 between I-25 and Tower Road • Looks at enhanced transit between downtown Denver and Denver International Airport • Looks for ways to improve transportation safety, mobility, and address congestion • Studies the impact of new transportation improvements on the environment and community What’s next that’s so important? Here’s a quick overview: • Teams the Federal Highway Administration, Federal Transit Administration, Colorado Department of Transportation, Regional Transportation District and City and County of Denver • Corridor-wide interstate and transit alternatives: The project team has been busy mixing and matching – interstate and transit alternatives. For the first time, more than 115 interstate and transit elements have been combined to create several different corridor-wide interstate and transit alternatives. The interstate and transit alternatives under consideration are shown on the following pages. • Promueve formas de mejorar la seguridad en la transportación, movilidad y mejora la congestión • Estudia el impacto de nuevas mejoras de transportación en el medio ambiente y la comunidad The project team is now doing a detailed analysis to see how well each alternative works, how it impacts the community and the environment, and whether it meets the project’s goals and objectives that you helped develop earlier this year. One of the most important decisions of the entire EIS process will follow the detailed analysis: which interstate and transit alternatives will be examined further. Recommendations will be based on the conclusions of the detailed analysis, as well as input from residents, businesses, stakeholders and other agencies. Those recommendations will be presented for your review and discussion at corridor-wide meetings in November. After considering all input, the decision-makers, Federal Transit Administration and Federal Highway Administration, will determine which alternatives continue through the process. After this decision has been made, the team will launch its most exhaustive study, looking at all possible impacts of each alternative on the community and the environment, as well as how effectively each alternative meets the project’s goals and objectives. The results will be reported in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement, scheduled for the summer of 2005. Transit Alternatives Alternativas de Tránsito Interstate Alternatives Alternativas Interestatales The project team has been mixing and matching “pieces of the puzzle” for the detailed analysis. For example, transit alignments, transit technologies and station locations will be mixed and matched into transit alternatives. Likewise, alignments, lane types and interchanges will be mixed and matched into interstate alternatives. We have consistently heard that it is important for us to think about moving I-70 out of the Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods. Among the numerous interstate alternatives we are studying is a realignment of I-70. The realignment shifts I-70 north of the Elyria and Swansea neighborhoods, adjacent to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad starting east of Washington Street and continuing north and east along the Denver Rock Island railroad corridor connecting back into existing I-70 just west of Quebec Street. Throughout our community outreach process, several questions have been raised about where the interstate could be lowered, raised or even put in a tunnel. Only one section of I-70, between I-25 and Tower Road, is still being considered for those types of alternatives; the existing viaduct between Brighton Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard. Vertical alignment alternatives for the rest of I-70 only include minor changes in the existing roadway elevation. Lane types Tipos de carriles To address increased traffic and congestion along I-70, additional lanes are being considered. These lanes could either be general purpose lanes that anyone can use or special purpose lanes that are limited to certain users. All of the lanes on I-70 today are considered general purpose lanes. Special purpose lanes can be for buses, carpools, vanpools, tolls or high occupancy vehicles (HOV). Interstate access Acceso interestatal Access to the interstate is provided directly through interchange ramps (like Colorado Boulevard) or through roads that run adjacent to the interstate (like the frontage roads along I-70 between Monaco and Dahlia). Many alignment options are still being considered for an enhanced transit connection between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport. These alternatives, developed through input from the community, include combining the different transit technologies and station locations with alignment options. CDOT Plans I-70 Maintenance Planes de Mantenimiento de la I-70 del CDOT The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is planning maintenance work on the I-70 viaduct between Brighton Boulevard and Colorado Boulevard, which should begin later this year. The work is necessary to offset the ongoing deterioration of the 40-year-old bridge. “We are planning this work now because it’s critical to maintain operation of the viaduct until the EIS is concluded,” said Sharon A. Lipp, P.E., CDOT CoProject Manager for the EIS. Lipp also will supervise the maintenance work on the viaduct. CDOT’s bridge and maintenance divisions currently are determining what work will be done over the next few years. All the work is maintenance related, no widening or capacity improvements are included. If you have any questions regarding the work, you can reach Sharon at our project office at 303 294-9300.
