Miss Fiesta San Antonio es
un programa cultural de Fiesta
San Antonio Foundation y Fiesta
San Antonio Commission, que
requiere participación en dos
funciones como Miss Fiesta. El
primero es como embajadora en
los eventos de Fiesta Commission
y el segundo, que la elegida diseñe
y desarrolle un programa en las
áreas de servicio a la comunidad,
como por ejemplo educación o
salud pública.
Madi Moad-Hageman actualmente enfoca sus estudios para
obtener su certificación como
intérprete en American Sign Language y contribuir así a formar un

Two-year-old Draven Maldonado, whom many call “Superman,” suffers from a rare disease
called VACTERL.
According to the National
Institute of Health, VACTERL
stands for vertebral defects, anal
atresia, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula, renal anomalies and limb abnormalities.
People who are diagnosed
with VACTERL typically carry
at least three of these characteristic features and others that are
not associated with the common
symptoms. For Draven, the disease has been a part of his life
from the moment he was born.
Draven’s father Eli Maldonado
recently spoke to La Prensa and
shared how his young boy is
fighting for his life. Maldonado
explains that when Draven was
born, he was born without an
anus and was taken in immediately to surgery where doctors found
more unbelievable discoveries.
“Draven was born with several
abnormalities. His heart was born
with holes in it, and the veins
connected to his lungs to produce
oxygen to his heart were not fully
developed and did not form to
grow all the way to his heart…
He was actually getting oxygen
from other different sources. He
had arteries that were going in
different directions,” Maldonado
told La Prensa.
For the past two years, the
Maldonado’s have taken many
trips to Dallas every two to three
months to get shunts and splints
for the veins in his heart. On Jan.
29, Draven went through this
fourth open-heart surgery, which
is very impressive for a toddler
to survive.

Draven has gone through so
much at such a young age. Many
doctors have said that Draven
might now make it out of surgery
and have even given him a few
months to live; however, Draven
beat the odds and continues to
live. In fact, Draven’s recent surgery was successful and moved
out of the ICU on Feb. 1 to a
regular children’s ward.
Draven’s health continued to
improve more each day. For the

will represent San Antonio and
participate in the “taco war” on
March 11 at the Old School Bar
and Grill in Austin.

strengths and thanks to Choose
San Antonio, there is going to
be a taco battle in Casa San Antonio,” explained Mayor Taylor.

Maldonado’s, this was a miracle
that was unexpected.
“They told us if everything
goes well in the next 12-16
weeks, he may not need another
procedure until he is 10-12 years
old. The fourth surgery was the
major surgery. The doctors basically put on a Band-Aid and got
him to a point where he is now
big and strong enough to survive
with the one lung he has had since
he was born,” Maldonado said.

anxiety about the life of their

son, the family has sustained
themselves as superheroes that
can break down barriers once
unseen. Thanks to their son’s
bravery to fight off the disease,
the Maldonado’s are not giving
up and feel grateful as the future
of Draven is bright.
“The only reason my wife and
I were able to do everything we
have done in the last two years
is because we believe in our son.
That is why we call him ‘Superman’ because his kryptonite is
in his heart,” said Maldonado.
“He appears normal, but on the
inside he is fighting a battle and
hanging on every day. It puts us
in perspective that we have to be
as strong as he is.”
The Maldonado family has
been carrying a financial burden
to keep up with the increasing
costs of Draven’s surgeries.
Although the Ronald McDonald
House and their insurance have
helped alleviate their financial
situation, the Maldonado family
still needs help.
“Little things like that have

helped us out. We have also had
to do raise and save money to
make sure that we have the finances to go to Dallas every three
months for gas, food and other
things to keep our family untied

Impact San Antonio kicks off ‘Drive
Security Service Charitable
for Five’ membership campaign
Foundation to help families in crisis

Since 2004, Impact San Antonio has awarded nonprofit
agencies more than $1.7 million
thanks to the collective strength of
women committed to impacting
and enriching lives throughout the
city and surrounding areas.
Members, either individually
or in groups up to four people,
contribute $1,000 annually with
100 percent of donations pooled
to create five $100,000 grants
awarded to nonprofits in one of
five focus areas: arts and culture,
education, environment/recreation/preservation, family health,
and wellness.
Now until May 31, Impact San
Antonio encourages women from
all walks of life to join the organization during its “Drive for Five”
membership campaign.

philanthropy by reaching our
goal to award five $100,000
grants through the strength of 500
members.”
Knowing that many women
do not always have extra time to
commit to participating with a
civic organization, members can
be as involved or uninvolved as
they choose. “Membership is on
your own terms,” McClure said.
“If all you have time to do is write
a check, that’s fine. However, we
also have great opportunities for
those who prefer to become more
involved such as serving on our
various committees or networking
with other like-minded women.”
In addition, members have an
equal vote for the nonprofits that
receive grants, McClure said. By
empowering women as the decision makers and allowing them to
see the impact their collective efforts have on local needs, Impact

During the ceremony, attendees
learned about the importance
of the El Camino Real and its
significance to the growth of San
Antonio.
“San Antonio is a crossroads
for many of the early routes used
for exploration, discovery and
settlement along the Spanish
Borderlands,” said Kay Hindes,
city archeologist. “Originally
traveled by Native Americans,
the demarcation of the El Camino
Real illuminates this little known
piece of San Antonio’s history.”
In addition to the ribbon cutting
ceremony, attendees also viewed
the design for the District 10 Fiesta Medal, which incorporates
the now-recognized trail as it runs
through the district.
“San Antonio is a city steeped
in history, and I’m so pleased to
see District 10 claiming our own
part of the past,” Councilman Gallagher said. “The El Camino Real
represented hope for so many.

sources such as sponsorships,
Impact Plus members who contribute more than $1,000 and
Friends of Impact.”
McClure reminds nonprofits to
apply for grants beginning June
1 with a submission deadline of
5 p.m. on June 30. Applications
can be found on the website.
Five recipients will be awarded
$100,000 during the annual Grant
Award Night on Oct. 19.
“We believe that awarding a
deserving nonprofit $100,000
enables organizations to significantly impact the individuals
and communities they serve,”
she said.

The Any Baby Can Crisis Fund
is there to help those families
and recently received a $5,000
boost from the Security Service
Federal Credit Union Charitable
Foundation.
“I have been deeply moved
and impressed with the level of
service this organization provides
families in their time of need,”
said Kate Himes, senior vice
president of Asset Recovery for
Security Service and board of
directors’ member for Any Baby
Can. “They are dedicated advo-
cates for the children and families
in our community.”
Founded in 1982, Any Baby
Can has helped thousands of
families by providing support
to those caring for children with
chronic or critical illnesses, special health care needs or developmental disabilities; free of charge.
The crisis fund helps financially
with the purchase of medication,
medical equipment and supplies,
rent, utilities, food and other basic
needs.
“Many families find themselves
in a lack of financial stability
when their child is first diagnosed
and they need temporary financial
assistance,” said Dawn Dixon,
president and CEO of Any Baby
Can. “Through generous donations such as this, our crisis fund
can provide that safety net until
the family is able to connect with
a long-term support program or
become totally self-sufficient.”
Any Baby Can provides services for children ages newborn
to 17, regardless of the parents’
income. They serve families in
19 counties throughout South
Central Texas.

y sobrevivimos, pero otros bebés no. Ahora que la evidencia
científica ha demostrado que
dormir boca arriba es la manera
más eficaz para reducir el riesgo
del síndrome de muerte súbita
del bebé, es importante poner
a dormir a todos los bebés boca
arriba tanto en las siestas como
por la noche. Cada momento
en que el bebé esté dormido es
importante.
¿Por qué no puedo poner protectores de cuna o cobijas en la
cuna?
Los protectores de cuna y las
cobijas están asociados con un
mayor riesgo del síndrome de
muerte súbita del bebé, asfixia y
otras lesiones. La mejor manera
de reducir estos riesgos es no
poner objetos suaves, juguetes,
protectores de cuna y ropa de
cama suelta en el área donde
duerme el bebé. Esto incluye
almohadas, cobijas, edredones y
pieles de borrego.

Comentarios... ¿Quién paga por el maldito muro?
“Yo no
voy a pagar
por ese f----- muro”, me
dijo en una
entrevista en
Miami y en
Jorge Ramos
inglés el ex
presidente de México, Vicente
Fox. (Donald Trump) debe pagar
por el muro; él tiene el dinero para
hacerlo.
La noticia fue que Fox utilizó una grosería en inglés para
referirse al muro que el candidato quiere construir entre
México y Estados Unidos. (Aquí
está mi entrevista con Fox: bit.
ly/1S5OFL3.)
La intención de Fox era muy
clara: que lo supiera Trump el candidato que va adelante en la contienda por la nominación del partido Republicano a la presidencia.
Y lo logró. A las pocas horas de
que publicáramos el comenta­rio
de Fox en las cadenas Univisión
y Fusión, Trump le contestó al ex
presidente mexicano en Twitter.
Trump le exigió una disculpa a
Fox, y dijo que si él hubiera usado
esa palabra, se habría generado un
escándalo.
Fox, por supuesto, no se disculpó. La ironía es que Trump,
quien ha ofendido a mujeres, inmigrantes, personas con discapacidad, héroes de guerra y a otros
candidatos ahora le está exigiendo
una disculpa pública a Fox por
usar malas palabras.
Trump sabe muy poco de la
historia de México. Trump no
sabe que Fox y millones de mexicanos terminaron con 71 años de
gobiernos priistas en México en
una campaña marcada por fuertes
críticas (y salpicada con una que
otra grosería). Fox sabe cómo
llamar la atención. Lo hizo en el
2000 durante la lucha para que la
democracia llegara a México y
ahora, una vez más, para denunciar los ataques de Trump a los
mexicanos.
Fox no está solo. El ex presidente Felipe Calderón también
criticó en inglés a Trump y su
absurda idea de construir un muro
en la frontera. Los mexicanos no
vamos a pagar un solo centavo por
un muro estúpido, dijo Calderón
en inglés en un reporte de la cadena CNBC. Si este tipo cree que
cerrando la frontera al comercio y
a la gente va a generar prosperidad
en Estados Unidos, está completamente loco.
Llama poderosamente la atención que los ex presidentes Fox y
Calderón sí han salido en público
a criticar a Trump y a defender
a los mexicanos mientras que el
actual presidente, Enrique Peña
Nieto, se ha quedado callado. Otra
vez. El silencio y agacharse es la
política preferida de Peña Nieto
para enfrentar los grandes retos
del país.
Actualmente hay muros y cercas en casi 1,954 millas de frontera entre ambos países. El plan
de Trump es extender el muro a
un costo de unos 20 mil millones
de dólares. (Un reporte del New
York Times en 2011 calculó que
la construcción de cada milla
costaría al menos 16 millones de
dólares). Trump dice que obligará
a México a pagar por la construcción del nuevo muro. Pero ni el
gobierno ni nadie está dispuesto
a hacerlo.
Construir ese muro es totalmente inútil. ¿Por qué? Porque
el número de indocumentados
no ha aumentado desde el 2009
y porque cada vez hay menos
mexicanos en Estados Unidos; en
el 2014 hubo 140,000 mexicanos
menos que en el 2009, según The
New York Times. Además ¿para
qué construir un muro si 4 de cada
10 indocumentados llegan legalmente a Estados Unidos con una
visa e, incluso, muchos vienen en
avión? ¿Qué muro detiene eso?
Los ataques de Trump a los
inmigrantes mexicanos y su idea
de construir un nuevo muro en la
frontera han destruido su imagen
entre los hispanos. El 81 por
ciento de los latinos tiene una
imagen negativa de Trump, según
la última encuesta de Univisión y
el Washington Post.
Hay más datos. Trump no
obtendría más del 16 por ciento
del voto latino si se enfrentara
en la elección presidencial contra
Bernie Sanders o Hillary Clinton.
Y así no podría ganar la Casa
Blanca. Mitt Romney obtuvo el
27 por ciento del voto latino en el
2012 y perdió la elección presidencial. John McCain consiguió
el 31 por ciento del voto hispano
en el 2008 y también perdió la
Casa Blanca. No hay manera de
que Trump llegue a la presidencia
solo con el 16 por ciento de los
votantes hispanos.
El muro se ha convertido en
el principal símbolo de lo que
sería una presidencia de Donald
Trump. Por eso son tan efectivos
los ataques mediáticos de los ex
presidentes Fox y Calderón contra
el maldito muro. Es importante
destruir la idea del muro antes de
que empiece a construirse.
Resulta difícil de creer que en
la época de la globalización, del
Internet y de las redes sociales,
existe la posibilidad de que el
candidato del muro gane la presidencia de uno de los países más
abiertos del mundo.
No, señor Trump, México no va
a pagar por su muro.

Just a Thought: interacting with Mayor Cisneros
In September of 1960, I
was accepted
to attend Central Catholic
High School.
I was excited
Steve Walker having graduated from St.
Gregory’s Catholic School in
Balcones Heights from eighth
grade knowing I would get to
attend Central along with some
fellow St. Gregory’s classmates.
I was excited about meeting new
friends from around the area, or
so I thought.
Unfortunately, my excitement
turned to sadness upon learning
two weeks before school started
that my father informed me using his exact words, “was being
transferred from San Antonio to a
foreign country called Massachusetts!” Turns out it was Springfield, Mass. to be exact.
I was devastated by the move. It
took me 12 years to get back to the
Alamo City after Vietnam promis-
ing never to leave again other than
for short term travel.
When I came back to San Antonio a few years later, I eventually
met councilman and soon to be
Mayor, Henry Cisneros. That is
when I realized had I attended
Central Catholic, he would have
been my classmate for four years
as he is my age.
After that, our paths have
crossed many times and continue to this day. When I ran for
judge the first time, he graciously
endorsed me. I still see him at
various functions, along with his
wife, Mary Alice, also a former
councilwoman.
The irony is, I met his father well
before I met him. In fact, I served
in the Army Reserve with his father, Colonel George Cisneros, at
the 90th ARCOM on Harry Wurzbach Road for a few years. In the
reserve duty, I stood at attention in
front of Colonel Cisneros. When
I worked at KENS-5 in ‘82, my
first story was an interview with
the mayor’s father, the Colonel for
Father’s Day. Later, the Colonel
and I worked out at the gym together on occasion after he retired.
I eventually attended his funeral.
When Councilman Cisneros decided to run for mayor and become
the Alamo City’s first Hispanic
mayor in a 100 years, a number
of my government students from
Memorial High School and I
campaigned for him. We stuffed
envelopes, walked door to door
and actively participated in the
campaign when we could.
As president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce from 1981-82, I
recruited him as a dues paying
member. After he was elected
mayor, I nominated him for the
National Junior Chamber’s annual
10 Outstanding Men of America
Award, which was presented to
him in Tulsa, Okla. that year. I
actually sat in the mayor’s chair
in his office at 2 a.m. writing his
recommendation!
Other notables named that year
included Merle Osmond, a member of the singing Osmond family.
Remember Donny and Marie?
Also, Leroy Selman of the NFL
Tampa Bay Bucaneers, and the
first blind mountain climber, who
climbed Mt. Everest, were also
inducted.
During the 90s when Mayor
Cisneros was named by President
Bill Clinton as San Antonio’s first
HUD Secretary, on more than one
occasion when I flew to D.C. to
pull my Army Reserve tours at the
Pentagon, I would end up on the
same flight as he was on our way
to D.C. and I would point out he
flew first class and I didn’t!
To this day, I wonder if I had
not moved to that strange place
in Massachusetts if I would have
hung out with the former mayor
back in the day or even another
possible classmate by the name
Sonny Melendrez. I guess I will
never know.

En su discurso pos-Súper Martes, Marco Rubio manifestó lo
siguiente: “El partido político de
Lincoln y Reagan, al igual que la
presidencia de Estados Unidos,
nunca va a estar sometido por un
‘estafador’…Voy a luchar hasta el
final para que esto no ocurra…”.
Si desbaratamos estas palabras
y las analizamos una por una,
entonces nos damos cuenta que
la nueva estrategia de Rubio tiene
dos componentes políticos interesantes. Por una parte, evitar a
toda costa el nombramiento de
Donald Trump como candidato
oficial a la presidencia del Partido
Republicano.
Por otra parte, crear una
coalición y elegir, entre ellos, un
representante en plena convención
republicana, el cual se llevará a
cabo en Cleveland, Ohio, entre el
18 al 21 de julio.
La nueva estrategia de Rubio
implica, entre otras cosas, que
ninguno de los candidatos republi­
canos alcance a tener el número
mínimo de delegados. Es decir,
de un total de 2,472, un candidato
tiene que haber logrado por lo menos 1,237 delegados a su favor.
Lo que quiere decir que Trump
estaría corto en llegar a este número
mágico horas antes del magno
evento republicano.
Sin embargo, actualmente Do­
nald Trump se encuentra punteando en la contienda del Partido
Republicano. En el Súper Martes
se adjudicó sendas victorias en siete
de los once estados que estaban
en juego. El resultado de esas
victorias le aumentó a 316 en el
número de delegados. Mientras que
Ted Cruz, a quien no le fue mal, se
llevó tres estados, sumando un total
de 226. Marco Rubio por fin ganó
uno, el cual le sirvió para acumular
un total de 106 delegados. Por su
parte, John Kasich sumó 25 y Carson 8 delegados.
Asimismo, la propuesta implícita
de Rubio hace suponer que sería él
–no uno de los otros candidatos republicanos (Cruz, Kasich o Carson)
—, quién recibiría el apoyo de los
delegados de los otros candidatos.
De esa manera sería favorecido
por los 1,237 necesarios y, consecuentemente, se convertiría en el
candidato oficial a la presidencia
por su partido político.
¿Hay o no dificultades con su
plan? Por supuesto que la hay.
Seguramente Cruz está pensando
lo mismo. Al igual que Rubio, Cruz
quiere ser el candidato oficial de
los republicanos. En tal sentido, es
muy poco probable que le entregue
a sus delegados en bandeja de plata.
Entonces, así como están las
cosas, existe una disyuntiva extremadamente difícil de resolver
en el momento que se decida los
votos de los delegados. Pero no
todo está perdido. Siempre hay una
luz después de transitar un túnel
tétrico y oscuro.
John Kasich, gobernador de
Ohio, se encuentra en la parte media de Cruz y Rubio. Kasich no se
ha distinguido por ser carismático,
ni tampoco es un candidato ofensivo y mal hablado. Por el contrario,
durante su campaña a la presidencia, se ha caracterizado por sus
políticas sociales moderadas y un
conservadurismo en la economía.
Por consiguiente, Kasich sería
el candidato apropiado, a quién,
tanto Cruz como Rubio, tendrían
que ceder sus delegados. Este
acuerdo o pacto mitigaría la crisis
de los republicanos y pondría fin la
contienda por la nominación oficial
hacia la presidencia.
Después de todo, la idea de Rubio de esperar hasta la convención
no es tan ilusoria como parece.
Tiene su lógica y sus méritos.
Empero, para que el libreto suceda
como está escrito es necesario
que Rubio venza a Trump en las
primarias de Florida. De lo contrario, sería muy difícil detener el
remolino devastador que ha sem­
brado Trump al interior del Partido
Republicano.

Solvencia económica remedia malestares en el hogar

Aunque mis tres lectores no lo
crean pero acabo de “descubrir” que
la solvencia económica es un gran
remedio curativo en los malestares
que se padecen en el hogar.
Recientemente le volví a cumplir
una de sus exigencias a la dueña de
mis quincenas.
Ella desde el año pasado andaba
buscando alguna compañía financiera
que le proporcionara información
sobre refinanciación de su “castillo”,
como jocosamente le llama a nuestra
casa.
Con la ayuda de su hija que reside
en Los Ángeles, California, mi esposa
pudo contactarse con una ejecutiva de
una compañía que ofrece solucionarle
los problemas a dueños de propiedades (casa habitación).
Mi esposa me pidió que le diera
copias de recibos de los dos últimos
cheques (de mi trabajo), así como de
otros documentos personales, lo cual
cumplí al pie de la letra.
Pasaron algunos meses y comencé
a notarla preocupada; sin embargo,
por ser ella quien lleva las riendas en
las finanzas hogareñas no la llegué a
cuestionar.
A principios del mes de febrero, mi
esposa ya mostraba otra facción en su
rostro: retomó su acostumbra figura,
ya se le veía menos preocupada y de
vez en cuando la escuchaba hablar
amablemente con sus clientes (ella
es presidenta de la compañía Franco
& Franco Promotions), a quienes les
arregla peticiones de visas de trabajo
para grupos musicales y deportistas
profesionales.
Por el cambio facial de mi esposa
comencé a prepararme para aceptar
lo que ella me propusiera.
Por fin se llegó el momento. Mi
esposa me pidió que la acompañara
en cierta fecha para ir a firmar documentos porque le habían aprobado la
refinanciación de nuestra propiedad.
Se llegó el día y cuando me disponía a acudir a la cita, mi esposa me
llamó para decirme que por ser tanto
la documentación que teníamos que
firmar, la agente de hipotecas que
nos iba a asistir le había llamado para
decirle que no estaba lista con todos
los documentos por firmar, dándole
otra fecha.
En un lapso de dos días, mi esposa
me confirmó que ya se tenía toda la
documentación y que estuviéramos
listos para ir a la cita.
Se logró satisfactoriamente firmar
todos los documentos, siendo yo la
principal persona que tendría que
responder por la extensión de la hipoteca, porque mi crédito en las tres
últimas décadas se ha mantenido por
encima del promedio que se exige en
este tipo de transacciones.
Yo quedé contento porque ahora
en lugar de hacer tres pagos (de
nuestra propiedad) anualmente,
entre ellos el de la hipoteca, seguro
de la propiedad e impuestos de la
misma, quedaron consolidados en
un solo pago mensual por la cantidad
de $900.

1. You may be depressed: Sad
thoughts can slowly sneak in, making you depressed before you even
realize it. According to WebMD
and others, depression can slowly
take over your thoughts before you
understand that depression is dominating your perspective. This can
disrupt your sleep and add to fatigue.
2. Sleep apnea: This is a sleep
disorder where people wake up
frequently during the night because
they stop breathing. One sign is
heavy snoring. Most people don’t
realize their sleep is disrupted, but
they are tired all day long. Sleep
apnea can also cause high blood
pressure, diabetes, depression and
headaches.
3. Skipping breakfast: Breakfast
gives your body and brain fuel to
start the day; no fuel in the tank
and your body and brain will slow
down. According to Livescience,
about 18 percent of men and 13
percent of women ages 35-54 are
breakfast skippers. People who
skip breakfast also weigh more than
those who don’t.
4. Glass of wine before bed: It
seems relaxing but a glass of wine
or a couple of beers actually disrupt
your sleep, making you sluggish
in the morning. Getting up in the
middle of the night to pee doesn’t
help, either.
5. You’re dehydrated: According to WebMD, lack of water intake
makes the blood thicker, so your
heart has to pump harder, leaving
you fatigued. Drink water!
6. Napping: In 30 minutes you
go in to deep sleep, so you wake up
feeling groggy and out of it. Napping too late in the day will make
it harder for you to fall asleep at
bedtime, too.
7. You’re not taking in enough
iron: One of the most common
symptoms of iron deficiency is exhaustion, because it is iron that helps
the red blood cells carry oxygen.
This is definitely more common in
women and the elderly. Have some

more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.”
If you are suffering from lack
of energy, consider some of these
possible answers. Small changes
in your daily life can lead to bigger
benefits for your overall health.

“Ahora ya debes estar feliz porque se
logró milagrosamente lo que tanto
deseabas. Que el Creador Divino
nos siga dando energía para seguir
adelante. Si de repente me voy de
este bello mundo, al menos me iré
tranquilo porque pude ayudarte en
algo para darle solución a lo que más
te preocupaba”.
Las mismas palabras se las dije
frente a nuestro hijo, quien también
se ha esmerado en su preparación
profesional. Él recientemente compró casa. Tiene buen trabajo (forma
parte del equipo de mecánicos en
una compañía de autos de carrera).
Sigue cursando estudios superiores,
especializándose en soldadura y
enderezado de autos, lo cual en el
futuro le dará solvencia económica
para empezar una familia al lado de
su bella prometida.
Claro que para lograr solvencia
económica, a los tres nos ha costado
demasiado esfuerzo. Sin embargo,
no todo para ahí, ya que a como han
venido pasando los años la calidad
de vida se ha incrementado en la
económica. Por ejemplo, en los costos del seguro médico, mi hijo ahora
él paga el suyo, mi esposa por tener
66 años de edad le ha venido sacando
provecho al seguro de salud Medicare, del cual para complementar el
cien por ciento, ella paga el veinte
por ciento, que no es mucho, pero yo
porque no “califico” para la dizque
llamada reforma de salud (Obamacare) tengo que pagar regularmente
los servicios de una póliza que
sobrepasa los $600 mensualmente.
Mi esposa en repetidas ocasiones
(antes de refinanciar la casa) se
quejaba de que se estaba pagando
mucho por mi seguro médico, a lo
que yo le respondía que era bastante
fácil cancelarlo.
“Si te quedas sin seguro médico
vas a ser multado, porque así lo
ordena la ley del que no tiene seguro
se hace acreedor a una multa cuando
hace su reporte de impuestos. Ni
modo, tenemos que seguir malgastando ese dinero. Ni tan siquiera
quieres usarlo, tienes que ir a ver a
un especialista para que te arregle
esos dolores que traes en los tobillos.
Para eso es el seguro médico”. Con
esa cantaleta mi esposa se refería
cuando le llegaba por correo el cobro de la póliza, la cual en un lapso
de dos años la ha ido cambiando a
compañías aseguradoras que le han
ido reduciendo precios.
Ni modo, qué hacer cuando la
ama de casa, quiere estirar el presupuesto familiar. Ella no descansa
hasta encontrar precios y costos que
se acomoden a sus exigencias. Para
lo único que uso mi seguro médico
es para chequeo cada cuatro meses
y que se me siga prescribiendo medicamento para calmar la ansiedad,
enfermedad crónica que heredé tras
dejar la bebida y la dieta que hace 16
años llevaba, que consistía en llenar
el estómago con carnes rojas, botanas
picantes y afrodisiacos mariscos.
Ojalá que en la política resulte
elegido por el partido republicano
al senador Marco Rubio, quien en
su discurso del “Super Tuesday”
(elección primaria) fue el único en
pronunciarse en contra de la reforma
de salud (Obamacare). “Si llego a
ser presidente les prometo que de

Estudio sobre administración de ácido tranexámico durante
el transporte médico por aire antes de llegar al hospital
(Prueba STAAMP, por sus siglas en inglés).
University Hospital, AirLIFE y UT Health Science Center San Antonio llevarán a cabo
un estudio clínico de investigación en el sur de Tejas, para poner a prueba el uso del
medicamento ácido tranexámico (TXA) en pacientes de trauma adultos que se encuentren
en estado de shock. Estamos llevando a cabo este estudio para ver si el administrar TXA
en la fase temprana después de sufrir un daño una lesión ayuda a reducir el índice de
muertes en pacientes con daños severos que muestren signos o síntomas de sangrado
significativo, antes de llegar al centro de traumatología. Esta medicina ha sido aprobada
para sangrado en otros tipos de condiciones, pero aún no ha sido aprobada para trauma.
Ciertos tipos de pacientes, daños o herida serán excluidos. Este estudio puede incluir
pacientes incapacitados para dar su consentimiento a participar.

los líderes del fútbol deberían
parecerse “más a los hinchas y
menos a los políticos” y que si
no olvidan que “todos” fueron
hinchas, “el fútbol mejorará”.
En una entrevista recogida
por FIFA.com, el mandatario recordó que cuando iba al estadio
a ver un partido se ponía “unos
vaqueros y la camiseta más vieja
del cajón”. “Pero ahora, cuando
voy al campo, tengo que llevar
chaqueta y corbata”, indicó.
“Considero que este aspecto
habría que cambiarlo, que los
líderes del fútbol deberíamos

Con dos semanas de duros entrenamientos, el delantero Manolo
Sánchez, de 24 años de edad,
nativo de Filadelfia, se encuentra
en óptimo estilo de juego, cumpliendo a la vez con su recientemente fichaje con el nuevo club
de fútbol soccer San Antonio FC,
propiedad de la empresa Spurs
Sports & Entertainment (SS&E).
Sánchez cursó estudios superiores en Clemson University y
durante su estancia colegial vistió
el uniforme del equipo Reading
United A.C. afiliado a la Premier
Development League (PDL) del
2013 al 2014, anotando siete goles
en 21 apariciones sobre la grama.
Por su defensivo estilo de juego,
Sánchez, de ascendencia puerto­
rriqueña, fue convocado al 2015
MLS SuperDraft, donde en el
escaño No.79 fue elegido por el
club Red Bulls de Nueva York,
afiliado a la Major League Soccer (MLS). En febrero 21 durante
partido amistoso Sánchez anotó su
primer gol ante OC Energy.
En marzo 3 de 2015 fue incluido
en el roster oficial.
Sánchez solo pudo ver acción en
tres partidos, siendo transferido a
la sucursal New York Red Bulls
II, afiliado a la United Soccer
League (USL), en la que milita
San Antonio FC.

garantizar que nos adaptamos
a nuestras 209 asociaciones
miembro y que les prestamos
ayuda para desarrollar el fútbol
acorde con sus necesidades”,

El suizo insistió igualmente
en la idea de considerar la inclusión de ayuda tecnológica
y de ampliar a 40 selecciones
la participación en la Copa del
Mundo.
“Se le daría la posibilidad de
participar a ocho países más,
pero muchos otros podrían
incluso soñar con participar;
disputar los torneos de clasificación es una gran oportunidad”, explicó.
En la entrevista que recoge la
página web de la FIFA, el presidente del órgano rector del fútbol mundial manifestó también
su intención de contribuir al
desarrollo del fútbol femenino.
“No solo es cuestión de aumentar su presencia en el fútbol, sino también en cargos
directivos en las federaciones
nacionales, las confederaciones

Argentina, ha sufrido dolorosas
lesiones en su espigado físico de
6 pies y 6 pulgadas, 205 libras de
peso y 39 años de edad.
Ginóbili, como gran atleta que
es, a buen paso se ha ido recuperando de la lesión testicular que
sorpresivamente le causó el alero
Ryan Anderson en su ruta hacia
el aro (miércoles 3 de febrero en
el AT&T Center). Anderson, sin
intención de lesionar a Ginóbili,
con posesión del balón en el cuarto
periodo faltando 2:27 minutos para
darse el último silbatazo del partido Spurs vs. Pelicans de Nueva
Orleans (en ese momento con marcador de 104-93 a favor de Spurs),
le sucedió lo inesperado. Anderson
trató de eludir la confrontación

En la receptoría estuvo el beisbolista Tony Frausto y al bate
José Canseco (ambos del equipo

Pass, Red Sox y Colt 45 dieron
lo máximo dentro del terreno de
juego.
Se contó con la presencia del

Con el patrocinio de la ciudad de Leon Valley, Northside
Independent School District se
apuntó un gran éxito al presentar “19th Annual Los Leones
Student Art Festival”, donde
niños de pre-primaria hasta 12
grados presentaron obras artísticas de pintura, escultura y artes
gráficas.
La exposición anual recibió
cientos de visitantes el sábado

El astro delantero de los Spurs,
Kawhi Leonard, recién llegado
de la tradicional gira del Rodeo
San Antonio, la cual le llevó al
equipo a visitar ocho plazas en las
conferencias del Este y Oeste en la
NBA, por tercer año visitó Ronald
McDonald House, ubicada en el
4803 Sid Katz (sector del centro
médico).
Leonard estuvo acompañado
por la mascota The Coyote y del
personaje Ronald McDonald.
Fueron bienvenidos por la dama
Pat Bivin, directora ejecutiva,
quien les agradeció su estancia
y a la vez convivió alegremente
observando los momentos en que
al alero angelino (Kawhi Leonard)
visitaba mesas donde lo esperaban
pequeños para jugar divertidos
pasatiempos.
Ronald McDonald House es
un hogar transitorio gratuito para
pequeños pacientes que están
recibiendo tratamiento médico.
Por tiempo indefinido (hasta que
logren recuperarse), los niños
tienen que estar acompañados de
sus padres.

encuentran recibiendo tratamiento
médico en San Antonio, aquí en
esta casa hogar o en las otras dos

estratégicamente en la localidad,
reciben un excelente trato durante
su estancia. Especialmente cuando
tenemos visitas de personalidades
que vienen a pasar buen tiempo
con los pequeños residentes y sus

la ejecutiva Bivin. De acuerdo a
la directora ejecutiva (Bivin), la
cuarta Ronald McDonald House
se encuentra en construcción para

satisfechos con la ayuda que ahí les
han dado. Su hijo Daniel Sáenz, de
6 años de edad, se encuentra recibiendo quimioterapia en el Cancer
Theraphy & Research Center
(CTRC-UT). “Está casa hogar nos
ayuda bastante en el hospedaje y
en lo personal. Siempre estaremos
agradecidos. Nuestro hijo es fan de
Kawhi Leonard y hoy el vistió orgulloso la playera con el número 2
(que viste KL)”, comentó la señora
Rocío Cueva.
“Con felicidad conviví al lado
de estos pequeños, quienes me
motivan para ser mejor cada día.
Me gusta hacer estas visitas. Me
divertí y les desee todo lo mejor”, apuntó Leonard, quien para
concluir su tercera vista concedió
sesión de autógrafos dirigida a los
pequeños, sus padres y seguidores
de los Spurs que recibieron invitación especial para estar presentes
en esta inolvidable tardeada.

Fire & Smoke series is ready to flame high at Hotel Emma

Today, the Texas Monthly’s Fire
& Smoke series will be rolling back
to San Antonio for the second time
to celebrate the diversity of dining
in Texas. Because in Texas we love
our barbecue, the Fire & Smoke
series will bring together two amazing culinary kings from the Pearl to
create brilliant dishes.
Recently, La Prensa spoke with
Chef John Brand of Supper and
Pit Master Tim Rattray of Granary ‘Cue & Brew to discuss an
unforgettable evening of culinary
matchmaking. Supper, a restaurant
that has recently opened alongside
with Hotel Emma, has allowed Chef
John Brand to become straightforward and creative with his dinner
plates.
Usually, the chef is guided by flavor, what’s in season and what feels
good at a table shared by friends;
today however, he will allow barbeque to guide him to the dishes.
“I’m honored to be a part of it,
and I am happy that they asked me

Monthly chose Hotel Emma as the
location. Tim and I work at the Pearl
and this will give us the opportunity
to show what good culinary dishes
that the Pearl can offer. I am looking

Pit Master Tim Rattray is also
excited for the event and even
chimed into the conversation and
explained how gracious he was to
collaborate with the help of Chef
Brand. His restaurant, Granary ‘Cue
& Brew is a restaurant and brewery
that enjoys running a from-scratch
kitchen and procuring high quality,
responsibly-sourced animals and
seasonal produce.
For good reason, The Granary
celebrates barbecue and beer 24
hours a day, seven days a week. For
Rattaray, the Fire & Smoke series
will be easy, yet difficult at the same
time as he prepares for how far he
can stretch his creativity.
“It is always fun collaborating
with people because it brings many
heads together from different backgrounds in deciding what pairs well
with barbeque,” Rattray told La
Prensa. “The strong history in Texas
strikes a chord with many people.
It is a big sense of community and
gathering, especially with the bigger
cuts of meat that would be smoked
for a long period, and we needed to
be together to produce dishes for
the series.”
Once they knew they were going
to work together, both Rattray and
Brand understood that they must
agree on many things together
through meetings, as well as work
on the process of creating a menu
that many would enjoy and recognize. In fact, both can agree that this
excursion was one that will prepare
them for the night ahead, as both are
practically neighbors.
“The process and journey for the
both of us has been great because
we both agreed that this series is all
about sharing and having fun with
it,” Rattray said. “He has a great
product at granary and it is great to
have a neighbor to be so close with
to work on a few things. We will be
able to share equipment and work
on the menu to be a more refined
kind of night,” Brand said.
Now that you know who is in
the running, keep in mind that tonight you will get many perks for
attending the event including will
combine the talents of two of San
Antonio’s finest. The exclusive
reception will open the evening
with hand-crafted El Mayor Tequila
cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
Guests will then be treated to
a multicourse gourmet dinner—

Maks and Val will share life story through dance at the Majestic

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and
his younger brother Valentin will
reunite on the dance floor – this
time with their own dancing tour:
“Maks & Val Live on Tour: Our
Way.”
The longtime dancing pros
from the ABC hit show “Dancing
with the Stars,” will hit the road
this summer to tell their story
through dance their “own way.”
The “Maks & Val Live on Tour:
Our Way” is set to perform in 47
cities across America beginning
June 15 in Florida and will wrap
up on Aug. 14 in California. The
tour will make a stop in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre on
Sunday, Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets

to inspire people,” said Maks.
The show promises to be the
thrilling all-new smash hit dance
tour of the summer with many
surprises. Fans can expect to see
creative choreography with modern, latin, classical and hip-hop
styles, as well as original music.
“This show is not just dance
from beginning to end. It’s storytelling. It’s dance. It’s acting. It’s
spoken word. There’s going to be
original music – it’s going to combine all those things together. It’s
definitely an opportunity for us
to express ourselves,” Val added.
Besides being a multiple dance
champion, Val is also an accomplished violinist. He began playing the violin at five years old.
“This is what this tour is about.
It’s an opportunity to showcase
how much more we are outside
of ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ Music has definitely been an outlet
for a long time. I’ve composed
and written original music for
this show, so I’m very excited,”
said Val.

Tour: Our Way” will be co-choreographed, co-produced and cocreated by the talented brothers.

choreographers in the business
and supported by a cast of fellow
dance professionals, the show will
surprise and delight with timeless

Maksim commented.
The brothers have many plans
for the future. Besides showcasing
their talent in dance and music,
the pair hopes to pursue acting
in the future. They were recently
featured on an episode of “Fuller
House” on Netflix. “I love acting. It’s amazing and it’s another
way to expose yourself as an art
form. ‘Fuller House’ was a great
opportunity,” said Maks.

Con “Splendor on the Range:
American Indians and the Horse”,
el Witte Museum invita a los
sanantonianos a cabalgar hacia el
pasado para conocer cómo la introducción de los equinos cambió,
radicalmente, la vida de los nativos
americanos en el siglo 16 y cómo
esto repercute hasta nuestros días.
La nueva exhibición estará abierta al público desde este sábado 5
de marzo hasta el 21 de agosto de
este año.
Ubicada en la Kathleen and
Curtis Gunn Gallery, “Splendor on
the Range: American Indians and
the Horse” muestra al visitante más
de 300 artefactos, todos originales
(hechos por nativos americanos y
españoles), y que datan desde el
siglo 16 hasta los años 50 del siglo
pasado.
Antes de que los conquistadores españoles introdujeran a
los caballos a la Nueva España
(México) en el siglo 16, los nativos
americanos no tenían más remedio
que caminar largas distancias para
movilizarse de un lugar a otro, no
conocían ni trabajan los metales
y cazaban a los búfalos de forma
más lenta.
En la primera parte de la exhibición, a través de una maqueta,
se recrea cómo los españoles tiraban, desde los barcos, al agua del
Golfo de México, a los caballos
para que estos nadaran hasta tierra
firme puesto que no habían por ese
entonces muelles.
En esta misma sección se aprende, a través de puntas de flecha de
obsidiana, y cerámica de distintos
pueblos nativos como los Anasazi,
Zuni y Maricopa cómo era la vida
de los pueblos indígenas.
Con un morrión, monturas, mosquetes, mapas de exploración de los
conquistadores se muestra cómo la
metalurgia fue introducida al nuevo
mundo y cómo fue aprendida por
las tribus indígenas.
“Los españoles trajeron los caballos en el 1519 o 20 con (Hernán)
Cortez y cambió a México porque
una vez que llegaron a esta parte
del mundo las cosas empezaron
a cambiar rápidamente”, explicó
Bruce Shackelford, curador del
Witte Museum sobre el South
Texas Heritage.
“Al principio los indios estaba
aterrados (al ver los caballos)”,
explica y por mucho tiempo no supieron cómo montarlos puesto que
los españoles se lo tenían prohibido.
Entre los primeros caballos que
los conquistadores españoles trajeron al Nuevo Mundo estaban los
Spanish Barb del norte de África,
que usualmente estaban mezclados
con caballos árabes y andaluces,
añade el curador.
En las grandes planicies
Muchas veces cuando se piensa
en los nativos americanos se les
imagina cabalgando por las planicies de Norteamérica. Esta imagen
se debe a las primeras fotografías
que se les hicieron a finales siglo
XIX por el fotógrafo Edward Curtis.
Asimismo, por el sinfín de películas
en que se les muestra luchando, a
caballo, contra los exploradores
americanos.
Pero esto no es más que el resultado de su adaptación a dicho animal.
Por esta razón en esta exposición del
Witte también se muestra cómo los
nativos aprendieron y crearon sus
propias monturas, lazos, mantas
para cabalgar, bolsos, cunas para
transportar a los bebés, cinturones,
mocasines, escudos y hasta sus

propias armas al convertirse en
guerreros.
Asimismo, cómo la introducción
de las cuentas de vidrio (beads) impactó en la cultura textil y artesanía
indígena.
Apaches, Comanches, Kiowas y
otras tribus americanas aprendieron
a domesticar los caballos y cabalgarlos. Esto cambió en gran medida
su supervivencia y economía.
Gracias a que se convirtieron en
diestros jinetes cazaron los búfalos
de forma más rápida y desarrollaron
rutas de comercio entre pueblo y
pueblo y fuertes militares.
Al ser el búfalo o bisonte un
importante animal para los nativos
americanos, un imponente ejemplar
disecado se expone en el centro
de la sala principal, misma área
donde los niños podrán tocar pieles
de búfalo (muy suaves) y probar
monturas durante las actividades
interactivas que se realicen con
motivo de la exposición.
“Tenemos mucha programación,
tenemos una obra de teatro y artefactos que los niños pueden tocar y que
les puede ayudar a entender la vida
diaria de los indios americanos antes y
después de la conquista”, añadió Sarita
Rodríguez, vicepresidenta de Programas Públicos del Witte Museum.

figuran: “Tasura: A Comanche Remembers”, una obra de 20 minutos
en la cual Isaac Cárdenas (actor con
sangre comanche) llevará al público
a un viaje cientos de años atrás para
para introducirlo al mundo de los
nativos en un área en la que se recreará una fogata y se levanta un tipi.
También habrá una programa
especial para niños de Spring Break
y demostraciones de herramientas
y comercio; pintura con pigmentos
naturales, taller de diseño de estampados hechos de cuentas, y explorar
el sonido de los instrumentos musicales nativos, entre otras.

‘Beyond Rubik’s Cube’
exhibition comes to The DoSeum

Since Atari, game consoles
have had a very similar release
pattern. Every few years, a new
console is released and offers the
latest in graphical capabilities.
This makes for a more immersive
experience with sharper visuals
and higher frame rates and all the
bells whistles and bragging rights
that come with it.
The main problem with that
model has been the long wait
untill the next console release in
order to keep up. While PC gamers
have been able to apply hardware
upgrades to keep up with the latest
graphics, console gamers have to
wait five to 10 years.
In a recent announcement,
Microsoft’s head of Xbox Phil
Spencer, said that he wanted to
align Windows 10 and Xbox One
development more closely.
Releasing games on both PC
and Xbox can become an issue
when games are able to demonstrate stronger graphical prowess
on PC, due to the ability for PC
owners to apply upgrades. That is
all fine and good for the PC gamer,
but Xbox console owners are left
in the dust in terms of the capability that their machine is able to
achieve over the entire lifecycle
of their aging console.
The fix? Spencer said that Xbox
One could become an upgradable
console just like PC.
“I still think a console is the best
price to performance deal that is
out there but when you look at
the evolution ... I’m not going to
announce our road map for hardware ... but what I wanted to say
on stage for people when they see
this vision of ours and question
our commitment to console I want
to make sure that people see that
what we are doing enables us to be
more committed to what consoles
are about than we’ve ever been and
innovate more consistently than
we ever have. That’s the key for
me,” Spencer stated.
The vague announcement didn’t
go into the details of exactly how
this would work, but it does offer
a big change that console gamers
have not seen before. Since the
announcement, social media exploded dividing opinion between,
those that think it is a great idea
and the naysayers that seem to
make up a large part of the internet.
Without more details, it is hard
to say if it is an achievable idea.
However, the ability to upgrade
an Xbox One and keep on the latest trends in graphical capabilities
sounds like the next step in a stale
console release cycle that gamers
have become accustomed to.

noon on March 12, just in time
for spring break.
Visitors will enjoy interactive
experiences in robotics, art, music, computer programming and
engineering at The DoSeum’s
first traveling exhibit, which
celebrates 40 years of creativity
based on the world’s bestselling
puzzle toy. The $5 million exhibition was designed by the Liberty
Science Center in Jersey City,
New Jersey with lead creative
partner Google, and the Cube’s
inventor Ernő Rubik.
“The Rubik’s Cube has fascinated people from around the
world for more than 40 years and
has tremendous links to STEMbased subjects and the visual arts,
which are important emphasis
areas for The DoSeum,” said

Rubik’s Cube only stop in Texas,

Things get hectic in ‘Zootopia’

Disney movies have a way to
get through a viewer’s heart to
not only give a colorful and happy
film, but to also send a message
about how the world works.
Directors Byron Howard
(“Tangled” and “Bolt”) and
Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph”)
created a picture about a young
bunny finding her way to the
real world that is similar to New
York City. Many of us have the
American dream to earn a college
degree, get the job we want and
move out to a city like the “Big
Apple” to make a difference in
the world.
For the main character, things
go different from the plans she
had at a carrot farm back home.
Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin)
is on a mission to be a police chief
one day as she passed the police
exam and got a job at the bustling
metropolis of Zootopia. Her
parents, Bonnie Hopps (Bonnie
Hunt) and Stu Hopps (Don Lake)
support their daughter’s dream,
yet have a fear of the dangers
behind the job.
Once Judy gets on the train to
go to Zootopia, she gets a little
scared of what the next chapter
of her life will be. Once she gets
there, she sees a busy city filled
with animals, skyscrapers and
chaos—which she initially loves.
On the first day of her job, she
is ready to take on the task that
is given to her. Her boss Chief
Bogo (Idris Elba) does not believe
in her and gives her the simplest
task—to give tickets to expired
parking meters.
She does it with ease and meets
her goals of giving out 200 parking tickets. Along the way, she
meets a con-artist fox, Nick Wilde
(Jason Bateman), who convinced
her that he needed an elephantsized popsicle for his “son” (and
accomplice) to make business of
his own.
Judy believes she could not cut
it through as a police officer until
Mrs. Otterton (Octavia Spencer)
gives her a case about her husband who mysteriously disappeared and would like to know
his whereabouts. Although Nick
scammed Judy for an elephantsized popsicle, she decided to find
him to be her wingman and help
her crack this case plus 13 others
who were missing.
Together, they find clues, evidence and even stereotypes of
their animal personalities. As the
clues go on, they discover that
the 14 animals that went missing
were at a laboratory looking into
symptoms of rabies. They think
they found the culprit, Mayor
Lionheart (J.K. Simmons), but
things lead to a bigger mess behind political lines.
Through it all, Judy must find
out what is causing the outbreak
and remember that all animals are
equal to their behaviors.
After watching the film, it
was not the heavy subject I
was expecting. The character of
Judy Hopps was a strong female
character considering the size
of a small rabbit that could accomplish anything in a speedy
manner.
She was given vigorous, yet
challenging tasks that for many
years society believed that women could not accomplish. However, this little bunny beat the odds.
The storyline was also enjoyable to watch because the characters you suspected of disrupting
the flow of Zootopia are the least
guilty. In fact, one does not know
what is going on with the missing
victims until later on in the story.
This added a little confusion
about what direction the movie
was going towards. At one point
you think that it ends with an
obvious arrest, but it was only
stirring the issue a little more.
Ultimately, the movie will
provide a positive message to
audiences, especially young girls.
No matter what circumstances
you are in, anything is possible
if you go towards the direction
of your dreams.
“Zootopia” is now in theatres.

expresses support for Kate del Castillo

director Kuno Becker expressed
support for his friend Kate del
Castillo, under investigation
for her ties to drug lord Joaquin
“El Chapo” Guzman, saying it
is wrong to judge her without
knowing all the facts.
“I don’t think it’s very intelligent to talk from the outside,
just based on gossip,” Becker
said during a press conference
on Wednesday to promote a new
short film he directed and wrote,
“Secret Society.”
He said he had not yet had the
chance to talk to Del Castillo,
who is the target of a probe by
Mexico’s Attorney General’s
Office aimed at determining
whether she received funds from
the Sinaloa drug cartel for a
boutique tequila brand she represents or for a proposed biopic
on Guzman.
Del Castillo’s name surfaced in
connection with Guzman on Jan.
9, a day after the drug lord was
recaptured, when Rolling Stone
magazine published an interview
that American actor Sean Penn
conducted with the drug lord in
northwestern Mexico while he
was a fugitive.
Penn said Del Castillo, who is
best known for her lead role in
the Spanish-language telenovela
“La Reina del Sur” (The Queen
of the South), arranged the meeting.
In 2012, the actress, who was
born in Mexico but is an American citizen and lives in the United
States, posted a message on
Twitter expressing disgust with
Mexico’s government and urging
the drug lord to use his power
and influence for the good of the
country.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Becker provided some
details about “Secret Society,”
his third incursion into directing
after a documentary film that was
never screened and the featurelength action-thriller “Panic 5
Bravo.”
Filmed in just 13 hours and
without audible dialogue, the
short depicts a man’s attempts
at seduction at a Mexico City
nightclub.
He said the concept he was trying to convey was that of “staying
in the same place, in balance,”
even when people in one’s vicinity are making bad decisions.
“We live in a society of excess;
it’s cool to be in balance,” the
actor known for “Goal!” and its
sequels said, adding that “as a
society we need” to try to avoid
harmful actions.
As long as the story helps
a viewer to “think,” he said it
would have achieved its purpose.
In the coming days, Becker
will begin shooting a film about
the catastrophic earthquake that
battered Mexico City in 1985, a
project that will feature spectacular special effects.
He said he had made thorough preparations for his second
feature-length directorial effort
out of a sense of “responsibility”
toward the victims.

spring showcase at Galería Guadalupe

A showcase of multiple participating guest curatorial endeavors,
“multiples” highlights the contemporary nuance and multiplicity of art/ist that exist within our
diverse city of San Antonio and
surrounding areas.
The showcase “multiples” will
open March 11 and run through
May 20 at the Galería Guadalupe
(723 S. Brazos St.).
An opening reception for “multiples” will be held on Friday,
March 11 from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Rolling Stones to play
free concert in Cuba
EFE - The Rolling Stones confirmed months of speculation on
Tuesday, when they announced
they will offer a free concert in
the Cuban capital on March 25.
The legendary band’s firstever performance in Cuba will
take place at Havana’s Ciudad
Deportiva just days after Barack
Obama becomes the first sitting
U.S. president to visit the island
since Calvin Coolidge in 1928.
“We have performed in many
special places during our long
career, but this show in Havana
is going to be a landmark event
for us, and we hope for all our
friends in Cuba too,” the Stones
said in a statement.
The show in Havana will cap
off the band’s “America Latina
Ole’ tour, which has included
concerts in Buenos Aires, Rio de
Janeiro and Montevideo and is
set for stops in Lima, Bogota and
Mexico City before arriving here.
The Stones said the free concert in Cuba is being made possible by the Curaçao-based Fundashon Bon Intenshon, which
