Inside my guitar, my handkerchief I will keep. Pobre este bailecito, ¡ay! ella no quiere bailar. This poor little lover, that no one wants to kiss. With his black handkerchief, my eyes I will dry. Poor little one, yes! Poor little one, no! Speak out your words, my friend, and forget the pain. ¡Pobrecito, si! ¡Pobrecito, no! Speak your words with great care, as awaiting I will be. This little bailecito, listen! though you do not want to hear. With guitar strings her hair I will braid. This little bailecito ring out that he wants to caress her. Her cheeks approach, but he cannot reach them. Poor little one, yes! Poor little one, no! With my song I console myself, though you say no. ¡Pobrecito, si! ¡Pobrecito, no! Con mi canto me complazco, aunque digas no. Speak your words with great care, as awaiting I will be. (1) Bailecito literally means little dance, but it is also a folk musical dance form in northern Argentina. This was one of those songs that came out in one sitting with the verses and chorus emerging in the form and manner of the bailecito (folk dance from northern Argentina). The range of the vocal line was quite extensive and we decided to leave it just as it was. Sometime later, Marcela Neme wrote the lyrics and that is when we named it El pobrecito, or the Poor Little One. Pablo and Manu’s arrangements set out to keep the instrumental lines independent from the vocal line. Mariano Cantero’s creativity was added with the percussion. Pág. 05 Far Away and Long Ago Allá lejos y hace tiempo (zamba) (zamba) Lyrics: Armando Tejada Gómez Music: Ariel Ramírez Letra: Armando Tejada Gómez Música: Ariel Ramírez Far, very far from the sun my memories from there return, I feel shining in my eyes the blue solitude of my native land. The wind whispers and drives the color mad, and a goodbye is nostalgia of poppy and woodpigeon, butterfly and sparrow. Far away, my homeland is there, making the day blue, a far-off sky, a far-off time; I become a child again astounded by the South, and by my lifeblood, a maternal voice calls out: life. The ombu tree spreads out its shade, a poncho of immensity, and my distant country is a sweet root that knows not how to forget. In front of the mist and the sea, the distance is a farewell, and it occurs to me that my memories from there have become a song. Far away, my homeland is there, making the day blue, a far-off sky, a far-off time; I become a child again astounded by the South, and by my lifeblood, a maternal voice calls out: Argentina! This is a beautiful zamba by Ariel Ramirez and Armando Tejada Gómez. A friend of ours mentioned it to us after hearing us play Alfonsina y el Mar. We played through it several times and then after putting together the piano, voice and guitar lines, Pablo wrote the parts for the string quartet (recorded by Pablo Saraví and Matías Villafañe) and oboe (recorded by María Eugenia Marsili). Pág. 06 A Song to Bathe the Moon Canción para bañar la luna Lyrics & Music: María Elena Walsh Letra y Música: María Elena Walsh Now the moon comes down in her nightgown, to bathe with soap in a puddle. Now the moon comes down on a slide spinning her saffron parasol. Whoever catches her with a bamboo fishing cane, can take her to Siu Kiu (1). Now the moon comes in a palanquin to steal a chrysanthemum from the garden. Now the moon comes from over here, her kimono says no, no and she says yes. Whoever catches her with a bamboo fishing cane, can take her to Siu Kiu. Now the moon comes down, very happy, to powder her nose with sugar. Now the moon comes down on tip-toe, in a china teacup she drinks tea. Whoever catches her with a bamboo fishing cane, can take her to Siu Kiu. Now the moon came and it made her cough, for eating rice with two chopsticks. Now the moon comes from over there and through the puddle she will swim. Whoever catches her with a bamboo fishing cane, can take her to Siu Kiu. (1) Siu Kiu is an imaginary place. This was Pablo’s first arrangement using the seven string guitar made by Alonso. The idea was to write variations for the verses that culminate in the huayno (another folk dance form). Manu added the vocal lines and Mariano Cantero the percussion. Pág. 07 The Farewell El adiós Lyrics: Pablo Manuel Arroyo Music: Pablo González Jazey Letra: Pablo Manuel Arroyo Música: Pablo González Jazey In the heart of the night, when the pain of a love that is fleeting in its goodbye stirs. Silent parting, that despite its depth does not dare to be a reality. Only your light remains, enclosed in the bitter certainty, that you will be no longer. Your gaze brushed for a moment against my voice, when the green in your eyes flashed the hope of finding you again in the caresses that merge our skin. Only the glow remains, of your time, enlaced in the silence that dwells in my pain. Your days will return to the sun from afar, sun of a tepid sunset, that once descended, will perish, extinguishing the aftertaste of anguish that you will not return. Only my voice remains, sighing in silence the sorrow that this farewell leaves behind. My silence in your voice, like a love song, sows the heavens, illuminates the sun. If in silence I loved you, only the wind in a wandering lament mentions you upon its return. A memory you will be, a moment that holds the secret of our hope. In the heart of the night, when the pain of a love that is fleeting in its goodbye stirs. Silent parting, that despite its depth does not dare to be a reality. Only my voice remains, sighing in silence the sorrow that this farewell leaves behind. Manu added the lyrics to this music written by Pablo and thus gave the song its title and the form of aire de zamba. Because of the meaning of the song, we wanted Annelise to sing in a low range of the voice and that the piano had more presence. We later felt that the timber of the cello was perfect to shape the feelings that came up in us when we played the song. That is how the melodic lines came to life that Matias Villafañe knew how to interpret the sentiment the music suggested. Little water of the rivers, when you run you brighten up the journey, with the hope of a harvest and a new verdant pasture, so that it does not wither until the time of a new love arrives. I return to your roots, Father Carnaval (1), with my wounds and my guiding star, uphill I begin to climb! I hear in the stillness of your vastness, the drums that vibrate, a light that now breaks the night of my suffering. Old songs I hold fast to my heart, I will carry wherever I go, my voice soars to other bearings, searching for a trace in the sea of that voice that gave meaning to our life. My Chayita (2), ancestral song! Nights of the Vidaleros (3) will shine, like stars in the sky through the darkness, always guiding our journey, keeping us from oblivion, a lost heaven, when the heart is silenced. (vidala chayera) (1) Carnaval is Mardi gras. (2) Chaya is a folk form from the Cuyo region of Argentina. (3) Vidala is a traditional folk music form of the north of Argentina. A vidalero is a person that sings this music and makes up verses of wisdom. The music was composed before the words that gave it the form of an aire de chaya, rather than a full chaya as the title suggests. The words were written on a sunny, summer afternoon in Salta surrounded by the impressive mountains. It is because of this, inspired by this scenery, that the words attempt to describe the multi-colored and varied landscapes, the aromas, the images and all of those sensations that marked us as children. As in El pobrecito, we were looking for independence of the guitar and piano lines from the vocal line, so that they play with each other without clashing with the second vocal line sung by Manu and that of the flute interpreted by Stella Maris Marrello. Later, one afternoon during a rehearsal, we started to play around with the piece and almost in one play-through the part of the piano came about. We liked that spontaneity so much that we decided to include it in the recording. Afterwards, Pablo with a few minor adjustments moved the piece to the seven string guitar and Mariano Cantero added his contribution with the percussion. (instrumental) (instrumental) Pág. 11 That Former Love Del Amor Antiguo Lyrics: Néstor Soria Music: Pablo González Jazey Letra: Néstor Soria Música: Pablo González Jazey It's always with me a former love, why is that? It asks me to return, but I refuse to look back - and see it. Siempre viene conmigo Un amor antiguo porqué será, Me pide volver Pero me niego a mirar atrás, y a verlo. Tinged with sadness, its voice returns, calling to me, I don't want to hesitate, but the spell is so strong that - I fear it. I feel that the past is buried, but it is not so, and that love will say I fool myself for resisting - its honey. My heart cannot help me, it hesitates and leaves me like this, a prisoner of that love and, though I deny it, to its arms - I return. With a plumed pen on mourning paper, I will write: “hey former love, how have you survived time?” It climbs my guitar and my voice is bound when I sing, I fear pronouncing that name that I cannot forget - it scares me. Where to find solace, if on earth and in heaven, it follows me, of this former love I am its captive, its slave - I confess. My heart cannot help me, it hesitates and leaves me like this, a prisoner of that love and, though I deny it, to its arms - I return. Again, the title of the song came about from the words written by Néstor Soria. After we had rehearsed the piece for some time we thought that a voice like that of Raúl Carnota would add to the song. He generously contributed his artistry and professionalism. (chacarera trunca) (chacarera trunca) Pág. 12 Chaya for Toconás Chaya por Toconás Juan Benito Toconás, hits the road, drunk, he meanders singing carnaval (1) and hurries it all along with a holler, very happily along the Alto de la Viña (2) of Jujuy (3). Death, disguised as Death drinking wine, greets him, placing a hand on his shoulder and in the other carries a knife; greets him, placing a hand on his shoulder and in the other carries a knife. An erke (4) from the ravines, sensing that he is wounded, watches him go by and bellows its moan-like cry; watches him go by and bellows its moan-like cry. Juan Benito Toconás, sizes up his destiny, after midnight his life spirit spills from his dark shape and trickles out in a thin stream, underneath an algarrobo (5) under the vast stars. Lyrics: Manuel Castilla Music: Gustavo “Cuchi” Leguizamón Letra: Manuel Castilla Música: Gustavo “Cuchi” Leguizamón (1) Carnaval is Mardi Gras (2) Alto de la Viña is a place in Jujuy (3) Northwestern province of Argentina (4) An erke is a large horn native to the Gran Chaco of Bolivia (5) Native carob tree of Argentina Pablo discovered the choral version of the Chaya por Toconás, which was written by the composer himself, Gustavo Leguizamón, while singing with Maestro Andrés Aciar and the Coro Universitario of Tucumán. This arrangement for Annelise and Lucho Hoyos’ voices, guitar and string quintet was inspired by that version and the memorable performance of the Dúo Salteño. Pág. 13 El Cuántico El Cuántico Music: Pablo González Jazey Música: Pablo González Jazey This gato sprouted from the desire to include an instrumental work that had that traditional criollo rural feeling combined with the picaresque and fun-loving sentiment of the dance form. The idea of the arrangement is to play with the melodies that jump from the guitar to the piano, intertwining and sometimes merging themselves. This time we recorded it as an instrumental piece, however the gato now has lyrics and next time it will be sung. (gato - instrumental) (gato - instrumental) Pág. 14 The last cup of coffee El último café (tango) (tango) Lyrics: Cátulo Castillo Music: Héctor Stamponi Letra: Cátulo Castillo Música: Héctor Stamponi Your memory comes to me in a whirlwind. It returns at dusk in the fall… I watch the drizzle and while I watch the coffee spoon stirs… The last cup of coffee that your frozen lips ordered that last time, with a voice like a sigh… I remember your disdain, I evoke you for no reason, I hear you even though you are not here: “We are through”, you said in a goodbye made of sugar and bitterness… Just like the coffee, like love, like oblivion, like the final vertigo of a reasonless resentment… And there, with your mercilessness, I saw myself die while standing there, I sized up your vanity and then understood my loneliness all for naught… It was raining, and I offered you, the last cup of coffee. This arrangement is based on an arrangement by Máximo Diego Pujol for guitar and flute. Pág. 15 Lila Lila Lila, watches through the window at how our lives pass before her and without saying a word, her smile is a gift, so extensive as a spring sunshine; clandestinely seated on the sofas, she escapes while thinking of how she will spend the day. Lila, runs in the garden, and the flowers greet her as she passes by, with a rain of petals, they caress her and ask her secret of how to be happy; happy that she does not know of greed, or of wars, or of poverty or a loveless Sunday. And I wonder: where will her beautiful soul go when the moment of sleep arrives and to dream that a paradise exists filled with her bones and toys? I hope she invites me to go! ¡Ojalá me invite a ir! Lila, plays with us, accomplices in the world she creates, with agile charms her figure carries on, like a crownless queen of this place and she makes this world light up in such an immense moment that she heals our hearts. Lila, jumps on my bed, fearful of the stormy nights, shadows, screams, noises, the dark thoughts, and the belief that a cold wind gives her the right to stray far away from us to search for new tales among heavy grey-skied streets. And I wonder: where will her beautiful soul go when the moment of sleep arrives and to dream that a paradise exists filled with her bones and toys? I hope she invites me to go! ¡Ojalá me invite a ir! This was one of the first songs that we wrote together and Dúo Sumampa premiered it in 2006. At that time, the idea was to describe Lila’s activities without being obvious of whom it was about. Anyway this did not work and everyone always guessed; especially since the words got the best of us and we could not help but be obvious when we wrote about our dear little dog. For this version, we invited Sebastián Suarez of Sumampa to create the second voice and Cesar Catalán y Mariano Cantero added the percussion. (canción) Lyrics & Music: Pablo González Jazey & Pablo Manuel Arroyo (canción) Letra & Música: Pablo González Jazey & Pablo Manuel Arroyo Pág. 16 Vidala for an evening Vidala para una tarde Lyrics: Luis Sánchez Vera Music: Luis Víctor Gentilini Letra: Luis Sánchez Vera Música: Luis Víctor Gentilini Climbing, I come from the dawn Shouldering my silence, How nice it is to say nothing When absence is within. The dawn seems so distant Stuck on another path, Tied to other hopes With a thousand pains of someone else. Parece lejana el alba Prendida en otro sendero, Atada a otra esperanzas Con mil dolores ajenos. Oh! who would be able to Tie braids to it? To climb up your path Up to the light of the bright star. ¡Ay! Watching the moon rise up, I broke the flower of my dreams, And in the pain of the evening, Smaller I felt my own. Oh! who would be able to Tie braids to it? To climb up your path Up to the light of the bright star. ¡Ay! This beautiful arrangement belongs to Jorge Farall who had the idea of using a jazz piano trio for the accompaniment for Annelise’s voice that almost whispers in your ear the sweet phrases of the profound lyrics of Luis Sánchez Vera to the music of Pato Gentilini. Alejandro Ferrara on drum-set and Juan Manuel Burgos on double-bass create the foundation along with Manu on piano. Pág. 17 How beautiful Que bonito How beautiful, how curious, how beautiful that there are shapes, thousands of stars, that there´s a sun. How beautiful, how curious, how beautiful that there are languages, a thousand ways to say love. How curious that there are wars, that there are truces, that there is peace. How beautiful is the rhythm of the waltz. How beautiful is the wind in your hair. How curious that we have five fingers, the word friend and that colors are the way they are. How beautiful is the truth in your mouth. How curious that there is a beginning and an end. How beautiful is the early morning light, to see the leaves, to see the branches and to know that the world is reinventing its former wonders, new tears, new laughter and this new little waltz. Originally, the accompaniment was for solo guitar. After hearing it, Manu wrote the piano part and then the percussion was added by Mariano Cantero, which with his cajones, or Peruvian box-drums, gives it the unmistakable flavor of a vals peruano, or a Peruvian waltz. The idea of this arrangement was to reinterpret the song, imprinting it with the sensations that it awoke in each of us.
