Dear Sweetwater Middle School Patriots,
It is truly an honor to have been named Principal of Sweetwater Middle School. The Berkmar Cluster
is known for setting and achieving high expectations. I look forward to working with you to build on
the cluster’s commitment to excellence to get us to the next level.
You, our students, the teachers, and our former Principal, Ms. Georgann Eaton, have done an awesome job making Sweetwater Middle School YOUR choice for success! This past spring, our students
and teachers achieved Sweetwater’s highest percentage of students receiving an Exceed score on 13
out of the 15 content areas tested on the CRCT (i.e., Reading, English Language Arts, Mathematics,
Science and Social Studies for all three grade levels), including an exceeds rate of 54% in 7th Grade
Science, 57% in 7th Grade Social Studies, and 51% in 8th Grade English Language Arts. Overall, 96% of all students met or exceeded state expectations in Reading and 94% received a Meet or Exceed score in English Language Arts. With 85% of all students meeting or exceeding state expectations in Mathematics, Sweetwater Middle School achieved a passage rate higher
than that achieved by the state and just 4% points lower than the Gwinnett average for all students. Additionally, over the
past three years, the total number of office referrals has decreased 44%, resulting in a 46% decrease in the total number of
days assigned for In-school Suspension (ISS) and a 64% decrease in the total number of days assigned for Out of School Suspension (OSS).
To build on this success, teachers currently are working with district-level Instructional Coaches approximately twice a month
during their planning periods to provide differentiated instruction to students in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science,
and Social Studies, so that each week students receive at least 30 minutes of remediation for mastery or extension work for
enrichment, thus tailoring their curricula to meet students where they are to take them where they can go in their learning.
Our Innovator e-Class teachers (those teachers doing a great job integrating instructional technology into their teaching) are
receiving additional training in e-CLASS (GCPS’s web-based framework that provides teachers, students and parents with resources to increase engagement in the learning process). After receiving this extra support, the Innovators redeliver the training to their colleagues who increasingly are using course-pages, assignment calendars, online textbooks, communities and
other digital resources to increase student learning. To prepare our students for the new state test, the Georgia Milestones
Assessment, teachers also are working with district-level Instructional Coaches to make extended and constructed response
writing, as well as document-based-writing, an integral part of teaching and learning at Sweetwater Middle School.
Educators build on the work of their students’ first and most important teachers, their parents. Thank you for your support
and for being active parents in your children’s lives and learning. Given your success as parents, the potential of our children,
and all the effort our talented teachers are investing in the teaching-learning process, 2014-2015 is definitely going to be

Patriot’s Spotlight
This edition of Teacher Spotlight recognizes Ms. Paivi Lievonen, one of our most dedicated
teachers. Ms. Lievonen has been an active staff member of GCPS for ten years and is in her
second year at Sweetwater. This enthusiastic teacher has touched many children’s lives, making
them all feel welcomed and loved. Her upbeat and positive attitude serves as a great role
model for her students as well as fellow staff members. She shares her years of experience and
wealth of knowledge with the newer staff members to assure they are becoming the best
teachers they can be. For her students she creates an inviting, respectful and supportive
learning atmosphere in which she encourages students to use their mistakes as learning moments. This creates a
risk-free learning environment where students are more willing to try new ideas or new concepts. She is, indeed, a
strong support and an excellent role model who shows selflessness and devotion to her profession, her co-workers
and her students. The students and staff at Sweetwater are so fortunate to have her!

Es un verdadero honor haber sido elegido como director de Sweetwater Middle School. El grupo de Berkmar es
conocido por establecer y logar altas expectativas. Estoy deseoso de trabajar con ustedes para aprovechar el
compromiso de excelencia del grupo para llevarnos al siguiente nivel.
Ustedes, nuestros alumnos, los maestros y nuestra anterior directora la Sra. Georgann Eaton han hecho un excelente trabajo en Sweetwater Middle School ¡SU elección para el éxito! La primavera pasada nuestros estudiantes y maestros lograron en Sweetwater el mayor porcentaje de estudiantes que recibieron un puntaje de
Exceder en 13 de las 15 áreas de contenido que fueron evaluadas en el CRCT (Ej.: Lectura, Lenguaje, Matemáticas, Ciencias y Estudios Sociales en todos los grados incluyendo una tasa de exceder del 54% en ciencias en
el 7º grado, del 57% en estudios sociales en el 7º grado, y del 51% en Lenguaje en el 8º grado. En total, el 96%
de los estudiantes cumplieron o excedieron las expectativas del estado en lectura y el 94% recibió un puntaje de cumplió o excedió en
Lenguaje. Con un 85% de todos los estudiantes cumpliendo o excediendo las expectativas del estado en Matemáticas, Sweetwater Middle
School logró una tasa de aprobación más alta que la que alcanzó el estado y solo 4% puntos menos que el promedio de Gwinnett para todos
los estudiantes. Además, por los últimos tres años el número de remitidos a la oficina ha disminuido en un 44%, resultando en un una disminución del 46% en el número total de días asignados para Suspensión Dentro de la Escuela (ISS) y en un 64% en el número total de días
asignados para Suspensión Fuera de la Escuela (OSS).
Para aprovechar este éxito, los maestros actualmente trabajan con capacitadores instructivos a nivel de distrito aproximadamente dos veces
al mes durante el periodo de planificación para proveer a los estudiantes instrucción diferenciada en Leguaje, Matemáticas, Ciencias y Estudios Sociales, de tal forma que semanalmente los estudiantes reciben al menos 30 minutos de clase remedial para dominio o trabajo extendido para enriquecimiento adaptando así el plan de estudio para situar al estudiante en donde se encuentra y conducirlo a donde debe
estar en su aprendizaje. Nuestros maestros innovadores (aquellos que están haciendo un gran trabajo integrando tecnología educativa en
su enseñanza) están recibiendo capacitación adicional en e-CLASS (una estructura en la internet que ha creado GCPS que proporcionar
recursos a los maestros, estudiantes y padres para aumentar el compromiso en el proceso de aprendizaje). Después de recibir esta ayuda
extra, los innovadores comparten la capacitación con sus colegas quienes cada vez más están utilizando páginas de curso, calendarios de

Esta edición del maestro destacado reconoce a la Sra. Paivi Lievonen como una de
nuestras maestras más dedicadas. La Sra. Lievonen ha sido un miembro activo del
personal de GCPS por 10 años y este es su segundo año en Sweetwater. Esta
entusiasta maestra ha tocado las vidas de muchos niños haciéndolos sentir
bienvenidos y estimados. Su actitud optimista y positiva sirve como un gran ejemplo
tanto para sus alumnos como para los otros miembros del personal. Ella comparte sus
años de experiencia y riqueza de conocimientos con los nuevos maestros para

SOLAR FLARE
Coaches: Mr. Tilford and Mr. Henry
Sweetwater students are participating in the 2015 Solar Flare competition. We are assembling a team to build a solar car with speed and design ingenuity that will bring us
victory in our coming races. Last year SMS captured 2nd place in Gwinnett County, losing
to North Gwinnett MS by only fractions of a second. This year we are aggressively seeking a first place finish. To prepare for the main event, our team will be working from
January – March with a variety of solar activities which were donated by Google Inc. to
SMS. If you are interested in participating, a mandatory informational meeting will take
place Thursday, January 15 at 8:00 a.m. in Mr. Tilford’s classroom, 5.209. Students will
be picked up from the Media Center by their teachers prior to the start of homeroom.
From the SMS Cheerleaders
There will be a Yard Sale on Saturday, November 1, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in
the Sweetwater Middle School front parking Lot. The admission is Free and all are welcome
to purchase a vendor space for this event. So, clean out your house and come enjoy the
yummy concessions while making some extra money! The event will be held outdoors, rain
or shine. Please note that vendors may not sell food or beverage items and that SMS reserves the right to disallow any items
deemed inappropriate. The charge for a Vendor space is $25, and all vendors must provide their own table. Please preregister
with Coach Winters at Sweetwater Middle or call the school at 770-923-4131 no later than 10/22/14.

Volunteering
We organize many projects throughout the year to benefit our school and to support the education of our children. From fundraisers to orientations to the school walkathon, it all happens through the PTSA! We are anticipating an awesome school year
and are excited about all of the events we have planned. If you haven't signed up already, please consider becoming a PTSA
volunteer. I promise we won't take up all of your time, but we could certainly use your assistance.

Did you know that students who attend school regularly learn
more and are more successful in school than students who do
not? The Parent Institute asserts that when students are absent from school they miss out on carefully planned sequences of instruction and active learning experiences. More importantly, they lose the vital advantages provided by class
participation and the opportunity to ask questions. Parents,
please help us make certain that your students receive the
best possible educational experiences by making regular
school attendance a priority. In addition to the advantages
gained educationally, regular attendance also helps children
learn the important life lessons of personal accountability and
personal responsibility.

Attendance Reminders for Parents:
We know how difficult the language barrier can be, and we are
eager to serve you in any way we can. Please be aware that
translation services are offered at the school for your benefit.
Thus, it is not necessary to keep students out of school to serve
as translators.
As a friendly reminder to all, please remember that family vacations, birthdays, and Fifteenth celebrations are not excused
absences. You may consult the Georgia Department of Education for a complete list of Attendance Laws by referencing
OCGA 20-2-690.1 & OCGA 20-2-690.2. You may also contact
the school for a list of the accepted Excused Absences recognized by Gwinnett County Public Schools.
There are times, however, when it is necessary and expected
that you should keep your child at home. If, for example, the
child has had an elevated temperature within the last 24
hours, it is required that the child be kept at home. To be certain that a student is virus-free, he or she must register a normal temperature reading (98.6) for 24 hours before returning
to school. If you have any questions regarding your child’s illness, please notify the school nurse, Ms. Beth Rutledge, RN, for
further information.

Sabemos lo difícil que es la barrera del idioma y estamos deseosos de ayudarles de la mejor manera posible Les informamos que la escuela tiene disponible servicios de traducción
para su beneficio, por lo tanto no hay necesidad de retirar a
su hijo/a de la escuela para que le acompañe.
Les recordamos a todos que las que las vacaciones familiares y
las fiestas de quinceañeras no son ausencias justificadas. Para
una lista completa de leyes de asistencia puede consultar con
el Departamento de Educación de Georgia citando como referencia OCGA 20-2609.1 & OCGA 20-2-690.2. También puede
contactar la escuela para solicitar una lista de ausencias válidas aceptadas por las escuelas públicas del condado de Gwinnett.

The Sweetwater Players
Theatre Arts has a long, proud, and strong tradition at Sweetwater Middle School, and
this new school year promises to be just as amazing. The Sweetwater Players, our after school
Theatre Arts club, provides opportunities for actors and technicians to come together to create
wonderful theatre for Sweetwater Middle School’s community. Students from grades 6-8 are
welcome to join. Although the fall production has already been cast, technicians are welcome
to join at any point. The $65.00 fee covers the expenses for all of the activities surrounding the
club, including productions and field trips.
This year’s program is centered on the theme “School” and what that means for students and teachers. Our fall production will be Hoodie, a vignette play (series of small scenes) that explores the idea of image. The play will be presented on December 5th at 6 PM in the cafeteria. Mark your calendars now to be sure that you don’t miss it!
Our spring production will be the musical Schoolhouse Rock Live! More information will be available later.
The Sweetwater Players will also be advertising several fundraisers, so please be sure to pay attention to the announcements for details.
Please plan to treat yourself to at least one of our productions. Tickets will be sold at the door prior to each presentation.
Ticket prices are $3.00 for students and $5.00 for adult.

Sweetwater Middle Holds Retirement
Ceremony for its American Flag
The American flag that has flown in front of and above Sweetwater Middle for three years
was officially retired on September 15th in a ceremony conducted by the school’s flag
crew.
The flag, donated to the school by retired Gwinnett County Public Schools maintenance
employee Chris Ness, in honor of his father, a military veteran, was folded for the last
time. The flag was previously draped over Ness’ father’s coffin, and was flown over the
nation’s Capitol, said Sweetwater teacher Glen Lowe, who himself served in the Navy for
25 years.
Lowe participated in the ceremony with the school’s flag crew who are responsible for
raising it in the mornings and taking it down each afternoon. Crew members are Kendra Overbey, Flag Crew captain, Mark Lupercio, Anthony Rochester, Luis Melendez, Alex Melendez and Saramy Granados.

General Homework Tips for Parents









Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.
Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming
and going.
Make sure the materials your child needs, such as paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available.
Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.
Help your child with time management. Establish a set time each day for doing homework.
Be positive about homework.
Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.
When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers.
Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets
rough, someone will do the work for him or her.
Stay informed. Talk with your child's teacher. Make sure you know the purpose of homework and what your child's class
rules are.
Help your child figure out what is hard homework and what is easy homework.
Have your child do the hard work first. This will mean he will be most alert when facing the biggest challenges. Easy material will seem to go fast when fatigue begins to set in.
Watch your child for signs of failure and frustration.
Let your child take a short break if he/she is having trouble keeping his/her mind on an assignment.
Reward progress in homework.
If your child has been successful in homework completion and is working hard, celebrate that success with a special event
(e.g., pizza, a movie, a trip to the park) to reinforce the positive effort.
Actores de Sweetwater
Las Artes Teatrales de Sweetwater Middle School tienen una larga, orgullosa y fuerte
tradición y este nuevo año escolar promete ser igual de increíble. Los Actores de Sweetwater,
nuestro club de teatro después de la escuela, provee oportunidades para actores y técnicos
para que vengan a crear un teatro maravilloso para la comunidad de Sweetwater. Todos los
estudiantes de los grado 6o a 8o están invitados a participar. Aunque el reparto para la producción del otoño ya se seleccionó, los técnicos son bienvenidos en cualquier momento. La cuota
de $65.00 es para cubrir los gastos de todas las actividades relacionadas con el club, incluyendo
las producciones y las salidas.
El programa de este año se centra en el tema de “la escuela” y lo que esta significa para los estudiantes y maestros. La
producción de otoño será Hoodie, una obra de vignette (una serie de pequeñas escenas) que explora la idea de imagen. La obra
será presentada el 5 de diciembre a las 6:00 p.m. en la cafetería. ¡Anótela en su calendario para asegurarse que no se la pierde!
La producción de primavera será el musical Schoolhouse Rock Live. Más adelante daremos más información.
Los actores de Sweetwater realizarán varios eventos para recaudar fondos. Por favor estar atentos a los anuncios para

Ceremonia de retiro de la bandera de Los
Estados Unidos de Sweetwater Middle School
La bandera de Los Estados Unidos que ondeó por tres años en Sweetwater Middle School,
se retiró oficialmente 15 de septiembre en una ceremonia llevada a cabo por el equipo de
la bandera de la escuela. La bandera, donada a la escuela por un empleado de mantenimiento de las Escuela Públicas del Condado de Gwinnett, Sr. Chris Ness, en honor a su
padre, un militar veterano, fue doblada por última vez. Previamente la bandera cubrió el
féretro del padres del Sr. Ness y fue ondeada en el Capitolio Nacional, dijo el Sr. Lowe,
quien sirvió en la marina por 25 años.
El Sr. Lowe participó en la ceremonia junto con los miembros del equipo de la bandera de
la escuela, quienes eran responsables de izarla en la mañana y arriarla en la tarde. Los














Asegúrese de que su hijo tenga un lugar tranquilo y bien iluminado para hacer los deberes.
Evite que su hijo haga los deberes con la televisión prendida o en sitios con otras distracciones tal como gente entrando y
saliendo.
Asegúrese de que los materiales que su hijo necesita tales como: papel, lápices y diccionario estén disponibles.
Pregúntele a su hijo si necesita materiales especiales para algún proyecto y cómprelos con anticipación.
Ayude a su hijo a que aprenda a manejar bien el tiempo. Establezca una hora determinada para que su hijo haga los deberes.
Sea positivo en lo que se relaciona con los deberes.
Dígale a su hijo lo importante que es la escuela. La actitud que usted demuestre hacia los deberes será la actitud que su
hijo adopte.
Cuando su niño le pida ayuda guíelo, no le de las respuestas.
El darle las respuestas resultará en que su hijo no aprenda el material. La mucha ayuda le enseña que cuando las cosas se
ponen difíciles alguien va a hacer el trabajo por él o ella.
Manténgase informado. Hable con los maestros de su hijo. Entérese cuál es el propósito de la tarea y cuáles son las reglas
de la clase de su hijo.
Ayude a su hijo a diferenciar entre un deber difícil y un deber fácil.
Haga que su hijo comience con los deberes difíciles. Esto significa que él estará más atento cuando enfrente los mayores
desafíos. El material fácil parecerá ir rápido cuando comienza la fatiga.
Observe a su hijo para detectar síntomas de fracaso o frustración.
Permita que su hijo tome un descanso si él o ella tiene dificultad concentrándose en los deberes.
Recompense el progreso de los deberes.
Si su hijo ha tenido éxito en terminar sus deberes y ha estado trabajando duro celebre ese acontecimiento con un evento
especial (ej. pizza, una película o una salida al parque) para reforzar el esfuerzo positivo.
