Gráficamente, no apela a recursos narrativos cinematográficos. Artist and Curator of the Espacio Historieta del Centro Cultural Recoleta Without a doubt, as time goes on, Roberto Fontanarrosa’s work will occupy an increasingly important place in Argentina’s popular culture from the second half of the 20th Century. Fontanarrosa was a narrator above all, and all his work can be defined in two words: soccer and humor. Never confined to one concrete genre, his extensive and variable works range from graphic humor to comics to literature. At the same time, his work exceeds the boundaries of humor and parody, transcending these to take on a serious, unquestionable aspect. Without a doubt, Fontanarrosa’s work is no joke. As a graphic artist, he was influenced by Alberto Breccia and Hugo Pratt, the authors of “serious” comics that he read as a child in magazines published by Frontera, whose director was Héctor Oesterheld, or in Patoruzito, by Quinterno. In literary terms, his influences were the adventure novels with yellow covers from the Robin Hood collection: including Salgari, Verne and Wells, among others. C haracters Fontanarrosa’s graphic work is undoubtedly the most popular and widely read. Among the characters he created, Inodoro Pereyra, Boogie el Aceitoso, Semblanzas deportivas and Sperman are the most outstanding. The first two, in addition to pertaining to the most extensive series, are the most loved and remembered by the readers of magazines as diverse as Hortensia, Tinta, Humor, Fierro and the newspaper Clarín. Boogie, el Aceitoso, is a parody of the prototypical North American tough hero, with a humor fine enough to leave readers disoriented, some of whom failed to see the parody and began to take the story of this hardcore, violent, xenophobic and misogynous mercenary at face value. In its graphic aspect Boogie reveals influences, more in narrative than aesthetic terms, from North American film. In other words, the citation of the character is not only literary, but graphic as well. In contrast, the other character, perhaps the most popular of all, Inodoro Pereryra, arises from other origins with different intentions. Like Boogie, Inodoro is a parody, but of a different genre, the gaucho genre, and its seminal work: Martín Fierro, by Hernández, very possibly the particular edition of the work that was popular during the ‘60s with illustrations by Castagnino. In “Inodoro…”, the narrative is different than that of Boogie. In graphic terms, it does not employ cinematographic narrative devices. The drawing becomes increasingly simplified, to the point where the unmistakable profile of La Pampa is identified with a single line. Practically defining the limits of drawing, Fontanarrosa focuses on the form and strength of the text, always ironic and powerful. This time the quote is literary, not cinematographic, and he works with this concept very clearly in mind. Filling the page with one joke after another, he manages to give life to a series of memorable characters. Inodoro, the lazy, womanizing loser of a gaucho and his voluminous wife, Eulogia, who tries to straighten him out on the path to work, and Mendieta, the talking dog, the singular character who rounds out the trio of protagonists of the narrative and is the motive of this homage. They say that Mendieta, who was once a werewolf, wound up remaining “dogged” during a night of Eclipse. Mendieta, who memorably terminated all of his interventions with a resounding “que lo parió” (shortened form of a phrase similar to “son of a bitch”).
