OKTOBERFESTE
O‘ZAPFT IS‘
• Maritím Playa
EXPORTSCHLAGER BAYERISCHES KULTURGUT
On 19 September at 11.00 clockstarts with the tapping of the
182nd Munich Oktoberfest at the
Theresienwiese one of the world's
largest and most famous folk festivals. Many German restaurant
and bars host a "very real" Oktoberfest also on the Canary Islands.
The domestic people on the
Islands love these parties and
therefore Fiestas de la Cervezas
are booming .
Beside of Gáldar and Vega de San
Mateo also the capital Las Palmas
jumped on this train since last
ear. The beautiful old town Vegueta, specifically the C / Pelota
including secondary roads, were
the scene of the beer festival at
10
which all participating restaurateurs are helding an Oktoberfest.
The streets are decorated and
hve original wooden tables and
benches. Of course live music is
offered too. Regarding the original costumes you have to be
a little bit tolerant because usually you see the waitresses with
bavarian costumes from carnival
stores. But one was almost rewarded with applause and admiring
glances if you pass by dressed in a
real dirndl or leather on tour (We
have tested it).
After the great success last year of
"LPA Beerfest" is quite likely that
it will take place again. If so, then
we will report in our next issue of
the magazine Viva Canarias.

Aldea de San Nicolás
10. and 11. September -
ROMERÍA - What is this?
There is hardly a saint to whom is
not dedicated a fiesta. It is mostly
the patron saint of the municipality. One of the two highlights
of this folk festivals is the procession with a statue or a holy
picture of the saint. Traditionally
food donations are given in the
church, which then come to the
most vulnerable benefit. Another
highlight of these Fiestas are the

so-called Romerías. These are
usually scheduled on Saturdays
in the evenings. The participants
wear typical canarian folkloric
clothing. Not infrequently one
sees small groups, which then
sing or play music together. It is a
wonderful possibility to meet the
domestic people and learn more
about them.

MORINGA
Already 5,000 years ago the ancient folks in the region did know
and benefit from plants as medicine and they lived healthier
than modern day generations.
Moringa, the so called Tree of
Life has been known and used
for thousands of years. During
the last decades this plant (bot.
MORINGA - the tree of life
Moringa oleifera) has created
quite a storm worldwide and not
only for the herbalists.
Scientists are increasingly promoting vast experiments and
studies about the outstanding
potential of the Moringa Tree.
This plant can be considered as
allrounder and the climate conditions on the Canary Islands are
ideal for quick growth.
Moringa tree has seven times
the vitamin C of oranges, four
times of vitamin A of carrots,
four times of calcium of milk,
three times the potassium of
bananas and twice the protein
of yogurt.
In no other plant, the proportion of antioxidants is as high as
in Moringa. These antioxidants
are important to eliminate harmful toxins from our body.
In the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCO) moringa is used to
combat anaemia, asthma, blood
impurities, blood pressure abnormalities, chest congestion,
cholera, cought, diabetes, infections etc. Moringa can improve
the fat metabolism.
Moringa is a good supplier of
proteins, vitamins (C, A and E)
amino acids, iron, calcium, etc.
The plant contains 18 of the
20 essential amino acids of our
body. Protein building blocks
are important for transporting
oxygen in the blood. Therefore
Moringa is also good for our
brain function, concentration
and can help with dementia. It
is also ideal for cleaning drinking
water. Countless studies prove
now the healing properties of
Moringa. Effective results can
show after just three weeks of
taking Moringa.

Shopping at Gran Canaria is really wonderful. Good and with reasonable fair price are sportswear and shoes. Shoes you can get in a big
range. The opening times are perfect for fashion victims, because the
most of the shops are open until 22h. In the touristic areas all shops
open nearly everyday.

HEALTH
Consulting a Doctor
The medical services are at
European level. Nevertheless
the language barrier might lead
to problems from time to time in
the public services such as the
Centro de Salud. For their services we recommend to take an
interpreter with you.
You can use their servie free of
charge if there exists a treaty
between the social insurance
companies of both countries.
You must show your social insurance card at the reception desk.
Private doctors usually speak
english too, especially in the
tourist areas. You may use their
services any time. If it is a private
doctor who has an agreement
with your insurance company,
you do not have to pay or you
get a refund when you return
home. Ask for the invoice. We
recommend that you ask the
doctor before treatment what is
included in what you must pay.
20
DRUGSTORES
Drugstores (Farmacias) you will
identify by the green cross. When
the lights of that cross are blinking the pharmacy is open. If not,
you usually will find a note on the
door stipulating the nearest open
emergency pharmacy.
• Opening hours (generally)
Workingdays 9.00 to 13.00 h and
16.30 - 20.00 h.
• A detailed plan for emergency
pharmacies is found on the internet (in Spanish)

FREE SMARTPHONE APP
„TRADASSAN
We have found a very interesting
free smartphone app called „Tradassan“ that also works offline. It
is a translator for medical terms
from Spanish into English. The
original name is: „Traductor para
la Sistencia Sanitaria“.

identified by the official Fedac-Seal (FEDAC Fondo para
la Etnografía y el Desarollo de
la Artesanía Canaria). These
handicrafts are checked by the
official authorities. Only licensed
Artesanas y Artesanos may offer their products. The Canary
Islands want to protect their
handicrafts against inferior imports. You may find authentic

The water levels at Gran Canaria
have a difference from one up to
three meters. It is dangerous to
swim in running off water. In fact,
it is dangerous to swim during
the time between high tide and
low tide (suction). If the red flag is
up it is strictly forbidden to enter
the sea.
Note for Tide Table from page 52
Times are for Las Palmas. For other
regions on Gran Canaria, please note
the time differences of:
Maspalomas -15 minutes
Arguineguin -10 min.
Playa de Mogán -5min.
WEATHER
The climate on the Canary Islands is usually lovely. But especially in winter it could vary in
Gran Canaria. For example it is
sunny in Mogán Playa but raining in Las Palmas.
Anyway, for trips we recommend taking along suitable
clothes and checking the
weather forecast.

CULTURE HINTS
NUDISM - TOPLESS?
In Spain nudism is not prohibited.
However, it is common to use the
designated areas. This is also
valid for Maspalomas. Please respect the cultural and religious
values of the guest nation and
its people. Please undress only
in those areas. Bathing clothes
should not be worn on streets,
in towns or in restaurants (only
at the beach or in the hotel pool
area). The same applies to topless.
TIPPING
The Canary Islands is low income compared to the northern
European countries. Tipping respresents an importang part of
the salary. Please tip generously
for good service.
PETS IN CARS
In Gran Canaria pets are permitted in cars adequately secured.
This means, that they must be in
a separate, safety area divided
with a net from the driving area
or with a car harness (seat belt for
dogs).
Thousands of pets in the Canary
Islands are abandones and therefore live in very bad conditions
without food and water. Tara
Animal Respect Association and
their volunteers rescue every day
dogs and cats as many other organizations. They try to rehome

COMPLAINT FORM
With every purchase ask for an
invoice signed and stamped by
the shop. In case of a complaint
you will need this purchasing invoice.
Should it come to a disagreement you have the right to address your complaint to the consumer protection department
called OMIC (Oficina Municipal
de Información al Consumidor).
They usually can be found in
every county.
To file your complaint you have
to ask for the formal complaint
form (Hoja de Reclamaciones).
Every shop must provide this
form upon demand even in
street markets.
Every party addresses the complaint according to the personal
point of view. This form consists
of one original sheet and two
copies. The customer receives
the original and the green
copy and the remaining copy is
for the seller.
Important Note: The form must
58
be filled in and signed by both
disagreeing parties. If the seller
refuses to hand out the complaint form by law you have the
right to call the police.
