> BATLLE I ROIG ARQUITECTES is an architecture office, formed since 1981 by
Enric Batlle and Joan Roig. Located in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona), the
600sqm office has around 30 professionals working on the fields of Architecture,
Landscape, Environment, Sustainability, Engineering and Technical Architecture.
Enric Batllle (Barcelona, 1956) is Doctor Architect and teacher of the Department
of Urbanism and Land management in the ETSA Vallès (Architecture School), as
well as in the Master of Landscape Architecture, both in Universitat Politècnica
de Catalunya, UPC. He has recently published his thesis “The Garden of the
Metropolis” (ed. GG, 2011), which won the UPC Extraordinary Doctorate Award
in 2002.
Joan Roig (Barcelona, 1954) is an Architect and has taught many years in the
ETSA Barcelona (Architecture School) as part of the Department of Architectural
Projects, as well as in the Master of Landscape Architecture, and also in many
international Architecture schools as l’Academie van Boukunst, Rotterdam; Delft
University of Technology; ILAUD, Urbino; IUAV Istituto Universitario di Architettura
de Venezia; Facoltà di Architettura, Génova; ITU,Faculty of Architecture of Istanbul;
Washington University, St. Louis; University of Illinois, Chicago; École Superièure
du Paysage de Versailles; Ringyorcesung Technishe Universität, Munich;

> Situated in Esplugues de Llobregat (Barcelona), our practice has 30 years’
experience and 600 m2 of facilities, and comprises a team that is skilled in offering
architectural, environmental and landscape reflections.

> The overall aim of restoration was to reintegrate the landfill site into the Garraf
Natural Park. The project set out to enhance accessible open space and create a
new gateway to the Garraf Natural Park, connected with the GR-92 long-distance
footpath.

> The project aimed to facilitate free movement in all directions along obstacle-free
paths, making up the difference in levels between the central area and outer-lying
paths by means of a series of terraces that respect all the existing vegetation and
generate a variety of spaces: a large central space to host popular activities such
as the castells human towers, and other peripheral spaces for various uses.

ENVIRONMENTAL RECOVERY OF LLOBREGAT RIVER

> For the stretch of the river Llobregat between Sant Boi and El Prat de Llobregat,
we devised a landscaping project to recover the river for social uses and leisure
activities. The result is a new peri-urban park to improve connectivity between
the embankments and accessibility from the towns along the river. It is a project
comprising specific actions to recover the river as a green space connected with
the town and its surroundings.

> The Parc de la Marina emerged as the culmination of the green corridor of
the Riera de Sant Climent, also designed by Batlle i Roig. The watercourse runs
uncovered through the park, generating basins to the sides which, in the event of
an increase in volume of flow, provide temporary flood control.
This park system has become a natural corridor that connects the mountain, the
city and the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park.

> The Nus de la Trinitat cloverleaf channels the intersection and connection of
the new beltway around the city of Barcelona and the motorways that head north
and east. Its complexity of layout produces a superposition of structures that turn
the original nine-metre difference in level into 15 after completion of the traffic
connections, introducing a new topographic and relational value between the park
and the city.

> The project we designed aimed to resolve the impact of the road infrastructure,
restore the continuity of the region and create a park not only over the 850-metre
long tunnel, but over the entire area expropriated for its construction, approximately
60,000 m2. Far from concealing signs of the architecture, our work sought to
dignify the traces it left in the territory, with a promenade along the structure to
complement the replanting operation. The footpath took the form of a 5.60-metre
wide asphalt strip painted like a yellow and blue checkerboard, and a 4-metre
wide strip of stamped concrete that divides to adapt to the different levels, with
one horizontal and one sloping layout to avoid the transmission of point loads to
the tunnel structure.

> La Vaguada de las Llamas was a large tract of open space on the outskirts of
Santander set aside by the city’s Master Plan to be turned into a public park. Its
location, at the centre of major urban growth perpendicular to El Sardinero beach,
its special river-bed topography and its long narrow shape (1100 x 300 m) made
La Vaguada de la Llamas a highly specific urban element.
For us, creating a park in Santander was the chance to experiment in a
geographical context where we had never had the chance to work. Having the
Atlantic as an environmental setting was something new for us, and we wanted
to explore it in every aspect, not only botanical and biological, but also those that
directly influenced the morphology of the project.

> A very irregular topography, with slopes of between 15% and 30%, and the
woody nature of the area, with its profusion of pines and evergreen and deciduous
oaks, largely determine the image of the place.
The decision to design the recessed niches as retaining walls, producing terraces
like the ones used in the past to farm hilly land, served to adapt the project to this
singular topography.
The terraces are grouped in twos and threes to form enclosures. The fine aggregate
used for the paths and the planting of native species, combined with more usual
garden trees (palms, planes, cedars, etc.) and shrubs cut into geometric shapes
give the place the air of an abandoned garden anchored in the landscape.
Facing the walls, a stylised pergola with ivy, jasmine and wisteria serves to create
a more private enclosure, at the same time contributing to an overall language for
the whole.

> The project to urbanize the embankments of the river Ebro in the stretch occupied
by the Expo 2008 enclosure comprises a series of six thematic plazas laid out
along an avenue parallel to the river. This is a flexible, unitary surface that we call
an ecological boulevard, housing a series of thematic plazas to accommodate the
various activities of Expo 2008.
The boulevard is intended as a shady green corridor where water and vegetation
help to enhance climatic comfort.

> The general project was based on an interpretation of the watercourse as a
natural corridor that connects the agricultural park and the mountainside via the
town, creating an urban park and incorporating the open stretches wherever
possible, recovering the native vegetation and turning the covered parts into treelined walks.
Particular attention was paid to correcting the course of the stream to improve
seasonal changes in volume and eliminate the risk of unforeseen flooding, and the
watercourse was planted with native species. The overall arrangement presents a
new north-south urban axis and connects the consolidated part of the town with
new eastward growth by creating new paths that respect the continuity of the park.

> The Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT) has its corporate building
in the 22@ district of Barcelona. The building houses 10 floors of offices and a
ground floor with a variety of services, such as an events hall, a large meeting room
and a pre-school centre, all within the structure of the former Can Tiana textile mill.

> In the 22@ district of Barcelona, on the site of the former Netol cleaning products
factory, we envisaged a project with two departure points; to protect and conserve
a listed façade, and to construct a 13-floor office building. The tower distorts its
floor plan to adapt to the cut-off corner of the Eixample and accentuate its slender
line.

> The corporate headquarters of the Reial Automòbil Club de Catalunya (RACC
[Royal Automobile Club of Catalonia]) is the product of the Club’s idea of unifying
its various premises within a single building. This two-phase construction gives the
company an important physical urban presence at the entrance to Barcelona on
Avinguda Diagonal.

> The office building that is the headquarters of Massimo Dutti has a rectangular
floor plan measuring 220 x 62 metres. The new facilities of Inditex on its estate in
Tordera are distributed on two open-plan floors of offices that are characterized
by being raised above the ground on a series of pillars that create a large covered
outdoor entrance.

> The Eix Macià in Sabadell is the setting for two of our practice’s most important
works: Catalunya Park and Millenium Tower. The latter, a 20-storey office building,
was built to promote Sabadell’s most dynamic moment of urban growth in the
1980s and 1990s.

> Our project sets out to assimilate the scale of the sports centre with that of the
Park’s other buildings, organizing the programme to occupy the minimum footprint
without rising above the other buildings. During the preliminary project, samples
taken on the site revealed remains of the walls of the former Citadel built in 1714 by
King Felipe V, five metres below the level of the park. The architectural quality and
archaeological value of the remains prompted us to modify the project, adapting
the geometry of the building to the form of the walls, and leave them on view to
visitors.

> The project develops the Can Bisa block, a 19th-century listed building that
houses a municipal arts centre. The colonial house is set at the centre of a series
of courtyards and gardens open to the town and a newly constructed building
containing an auditorium and 14 social housing apartments.

> The new Industrial Engineering and Innovation University Campus of the
Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya is being built beside the Forum area, between
Carrer Taulat and Barcelona’s Ronda Litoral beltway.
Our project develops two of the campus buildings that are intended to house
research departments, comprising lecture rooms, laboratories and offices.

> The Joan Gamper training facility project for Fútbol Club Barcelona, in the
municipality of Sant Joan Despí, is an important intervention for the promotion of
sport in Catalonia.
The project has developed slowly, materializing the club’s old dream of bringing
together in one place its technical and sporting activities for professionals and
amateurs. This ranges from installations for training the first and second football
teams, for grassroots football and for basketball, handball and hockey.

> Industrialized construction components, prefabricated structure and simple,
compact organization come together to produce an economical building for the
public administration. This secondary school in Reus uses its façades of coloured
slats to create a distinctive image and shade the classrooms from solar radiation.

MORATIEL HOUSE REFURBISHMENT
> MMI House was commissioned to José María Sostres by Manuel Moratiel Ibáñez
as a summer residence. The project was started in 1956, and construction was
completed in 1958. The plot occupied by the house is situated in Ciutat Diagonal,
a garden city-style residential development on the outskirts of Barcelona, between
Pedralbes and Esplugues de Llobregat.
Rehabilitation work was carried out after intense research to restore the original
project, almost unrecognisable after the successive remodelling conducted by
the former owners.

DEVELOPMENT
The practice of urbanism has been one of the focuses of the practice since it
was created, and it has grown as urban planning processes have become more
important in producing an attractive real-estate product.
For Batlle i Roig Arquitectes, specialization and in-depth knowledge of the
complexity of urban planning combine with the practice’s multidisciplinary experience with projects of construction, landscape and public space. This makes
us unique, because it gives us an overview of the urban planning process in its
three constituent areas:
Landscape. Our experience in regional planning, the environment and
landscape allows us to integrate public and private interests with the creation of
high quality environments that meet the requirements of government agencies,
as well as standing out from their competitors as unique real-estate products.
Planning. Our approach to urban planning documents, based on our
knowledge of the scales of architecture, landscape and public space, and our
experience in planning practice, centres on streamlining the process and facilitating management to produce the desired real-estate model.
Property development: our knowledge of the built project allows us to
study the most interesting real-estate models in keeping with the market and in
accordance with the needs expressed by the developer, and to direct the planning process towards the most attractive product.

When it comes to drafting urban planning documents, Batlle i Roig Arquitectes
has its own team devoted specially to urbanism and draws on the knowledge of
its specialists in other disciplines (environment, building, public space, urbanization). The practice also collaborates with external specialists in areas such as
mobility and hydrology, and usually works in close cooperation with various legal
teams.
OUR PROJECTS
Batlle i Roig has over 30 years’ experience in the design of all kinds of urban
plans, developing 50 or so sectors, transforming over 7,000,000 m2 of land
and providing the framework for the construction of more than 3,500,000 m2 of
gross floor area and almost 20,000 dwellings. This involves projects of all kinds:
new urban extensions, the transformation of existing urban fabrics, planning
green corridors and facilities, singular implantations in natural settings and tourist
developments integrated into the landscape.

> Batlle i Roig are responsible for the landscape intervention in the new Parc
des Expositions (PEX) in Toulouse, designed by OMA (Rem Koolhaas) + Puig
Pujol + Taillandier. The project is designed as a small compact city that preserves
the surrounding countryside. The proposed territorial intervention creates green
corridors to connect the PEX with existing areas of vegetation and introduces
productive landscapes of wood and farmland.

> Implantation of the venue of Expo 2008 at one extreme of the embankment of
the river Ebro where it runs through Zaragoza. The overall project devised by Batlle
i Roig organized a series of terraced platforms that descend towards the water
and become buildings, pavilions, amphitheatres and footbridges over the river.
The detail of the central public space, also designed by Batlle i Roig, is based on
the idea of turning the area into a garden of drops of water, which was the theme
of the Expo.

> New development of the municipal boundary of Viladecans with the Llobregat
delta agricultural park following the Sant Climent watercourse, around which a
large green space with amenities (Parc de la Marina) is freed up, thanks to the
concentration of the Vilamarina residential and commercial complex on one side of
the park and the industrial building on the other (Activity Park).

> The proposal, currently at the administrative phase, presents a high quality
residential community in Sant Pere de Ribes, exploiting its proximity to a golf
course and sea views. The complex is set into the landscape thanks to the
preservation of existing woodland, the size of the buildings and their integration
into the topography, the minimization of traffic and a structure of gardens that open
onto the landscape. The structure is conducive to Mediterranean life, generating
various patios, terraces, porches and pergolas.

> Implantation of the new Telefónica Corporate University on a hillside property
in a natural setting. The complex comprised various school buildings dating from
the 1960s and was bought in 2002 by Santa & Cole, who installed their office
headquarters in some of the buildings. The other constructions were restored
and extensions built to house the Telefónica Corporate University, which offers
continuous training for the company’s senior executives.
The development preserves the main buildings constructed in the rationalist style
of the sixties, recovering classrooms, canteens, etc., and introducing a new hotelresidence that links the orthogonal lines of the historic building with the integration
of the whole into the landscape.
