Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
On Monday, March 28, we received the following from CatholicCulture.org:
Mother Angelica, the founder of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), died on Easter
Sunday, March 27, after a long illness, at the age of 92.
A native of Ohio, Rita Rizzo joined the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration at the age of 21. She
established a monastery in Alabama, and after initially supporting the community by producing religious
pamphlets, she decided to make a venture in broadcasting. She had no background or expertise in
television, and virtually no funding. Yet under her leadership EWTN, founded in 1981, blossomed into an
international broadcasting empire, which now reaches 144 countries and more than 200 million homes.
An unlikely television star, Mother Angelica endeared herself to her growing audience with her
homespun humor, her feisty and opinionated commentary, and her simple but profound faith. She did
not back away from confrontations with powerful prelates, and strongly resisted efforts by the US
hierarchy to take control of Catholic television programming. "Mother Angelica succeeded at a task the
nation's bishops themselves couldn't achieve," remarked Philadelphia's Archbishop Charles Chaput.
I must say, not too shabby for little Rita. God’s grace does wonderful things through people who open their
hearts to his tremendous love. Requiescat In Pace.
*************************
We begin a series of selections from the Book of Revelation written by John, the Beloved of the Lord. It is filled
with images that can be frightening and has been the subject of great exaggeration and myth. Films and books
were written to attempt to interpret what these visions of John really were. We do not take such a literal view of
this book.
It is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism, which
at best appears unusual to the modern reader. Symbolic language, however, is one of the chief characteristics of
apocalyptic literature, of which this book is an outstanding example. Such literature enjoyed wide popularity in
both Jewish and Christian circles from 200 B.C. to A.D. 200.
This much, however, is certain: symbolic descriptions are not to be taken as literal descriptions, nor is the
symbolism meant to be pictured realistically. One would find it difficult and repulsive to visualize a lamb with seven
horns and seven eyes; yet Jesus Christ is described in precisely such words (Rev 5:6). The author used these
images to suggest Christ’s universal (seven) power (horns) and knowledge (eyes). A significant feature of
apocalyptic writing is the use of symbolic colors, metals, garments (Rev 1:13–16; 3:18; 4:4; 6:1–8; 17:4; 19:8),
and numbers (four signifies the world, six imperfection, seven totality or perfection, twelve Israel’s tribes or the
apostles, one thousand immensity.
Though the perspective is eschatological—ultimate salvation and victory are said to take place at the end of
the present age when Christ will come in glory at the Parousia — the book presents the decisive struggle of Christ
and his followers against Satan and his cohorts as already over. Christ’s overwhelming defeat of the kingdom of
Satan ushered in the everlasting reign of God (Rev 11:15; 12:10). Even the forces of evil unwittingly carry out the
divine plan (Rev 17:17), for God is the sovereign Lord of History.
This is taken from the introduction to the Book of Revelation. You can find a fuller explanation at
http://www.usccb.org/bible/revelation/0. This revelation [unveiling] of God’s plan opens up to a vivid account of
the great battle and final victory of God over Satan. In his mercy, our heavenly Father sent his only begotten Son
to win for us salvation. As we hear the readings from this holy book, may we be strengthened for the inevitable
battles with the Evil One.
In the end, our destiny is to participate in the great victory and share forever in
the heavenly banquet foreshadowed at every Mass.
Pax et bonum,
Msgr. Bill

Volunteer Accountant Needed
Fr. John Ugobueze, who lives with us here at St. Vincent
de Paul Parish, has begun a multi-year project to build a
high quality, Western-style hospital in a rural area of
Nigeria. A team of experienced professionals in the
healthcare field including a hospital design architect and
a major Houston law firm have already volunteered to
help. To complete our team of professionals we will need
the assistance of an Accountant. Because of the transnational nature of this project we would prefer the pro bono
assistance of a national accounting firm that has an association with a Nigerian accounting firm.
Early in his vocation, Fr. John served for 10 years as pastor of a rural Nigerian parish where he personally worked
with countless poor, sick, disabled, and mentally disabled
parishioners who often suffered serious illnesses. Some
suffered painful deaths because quality medical services
were too far away or too expensive. This hospital project
for rural Nigeria has the blessing of the Nigerian Archbishop of Onitsha, Anambra state.
If you are a Accountant with a major accounting firm,
please volunteer to help Fr. John in moving this work of
mercy closer to becoming a reality. You may leave a
message for Fr. John at the Parish Office: 713-667-9111.
Or contact Father John: 217-530-2610. Fr. John serves as
a Chaplain at DeBakey Houston VA Hospital.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
It was his first home visit, a new Vincentian and third year Rice University scholarship student, whose vocation after graduation is to the priesthood. He chose to pray
three prayers before entering to visit our client: The Prayer of the Holy Spirit, Saint Patrick's Breastplate Prayer,
and the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi.
We encountered the Presence of the suffering Christ in an
individual fleeing a home environment of physical and
mental abuse, pursuing a college education to earn a degree enabling her to help adolescents with the same life
experiences that she had encountered, and dealing with
health, psychiatric, financial and transportation concerns
in her path from darkness into light.
Michael's final prayer to our client, included the following
words: "A rose does not know that it is beautiful, but
that does not take away from the beauty of the rose.
We are all born in the image and likeness of God, and
we are all beautiful. God gives His toughest battles to
his strongest soldiers. He will not give you more than
you can handle." Michael's words brought overflowing
tears of peace to the Presence of our client, Jesus in the
suffering and in the poor.
Upon asking Michael's permission to quote from his prayer, his words were the following: "Anything I say you are
always free to use, for I certainly hope that it wasn't I that
was speaking."

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
We return to our reflections on the rites of marriage with a
brief consideration of reforms from the Council of Trent.
When the Protestant Reformation took hold, the fairly recent
achievements of the Church in regard to the sacrament of
marriage were reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In
general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage
was a civil matter, although some said that the civil society
had to be in harmony with Christian teaching. In the Catholic
Church, the Council of Trent took the question up in 1563,
and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramentality of
marriage. They identified many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that
still govern our practice today: to be valid, marriage consent
must be exchanged in the presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages must also be announced
three weeks in advance to the community, and recorded in a
register. In some places in the world, the “banns” are still
posted in the public square. In the United States, parishes
sometimes publish the “banns” in the bulletin. Anyone who
has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene
of a minister announcing gravely, “If there is anyone here
present who sees any reason why these two should not be
married . . .” This bit of drama has no place in the Catholic
liturgy, but survives among Protestants who broke with us
before Trent edited this cliff-hanger out of our public prayer. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SIGNOS Y MARAVILLAS
Jesús amaba a Tomás,
Lecturas de hoy: Hechos 5:12–16; Salmo 118:2–4, 13–15, 22–24; Apocalipsis 1:9–11a, 12–13, 17–19;
Juan 20:19–31 Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

UNIRSE A LA COMUNIDAD DE CREYENTES ¿Qué
te ayudará a tener fe?
nuestra tierra. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
