JULY 12, 2015 4 From the Pastor’s Desk… Today in our first reading we hear from prophet Amos who lived over 700 hundred years before Jesus came into the world. While born in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, he began his ministry in the Northern Kingdom of Israel. He warned the people that their sinful lives would lead to destruction. Amaziah, a priest, of the royal shrine of Bethel is throwing Amos out of the Northern Kingdom, telling him to go home and “get a job”. Amos replies that being a prophet is not a job but a divine vocation: he receives his order to be a prophet not from the King but from God. This is why he has left his work as a shepherd and a farmer. In spite of the opposition Amos continues his prophetic work in their midst. He is faithful to God rather than to common public opinion. In today’s Gospel, we hear the Twelve Apostles being sent by Jesus for their first public ministry. Their mission involves: preaching repentance, confronting the power of evil and healing the sick. Jesus instructs them to travel light and know that one’s identity and security is not to be found in material things or in strategies of self-defense. The messenger of the Gospel are to demonstrate a simple lifestyle and their total reliance on God. Like Amos and the Twelve Apostles we are called to a special mission. We have a purpose and a goal. The Lord has given us a mission to evangelize the people around us. I know sometimes we fear rejection or unworthiness in fulfilling that mission, but the Lord tells us to stay focused and trust in God. I am very happy that many of you are involved in the various activities of the Parish here at St. Nick’s. Jesus needs more people who will become his hands, feet and minds in this present age. Mission Co-op Appeal Next weekend at all Masses Fr. James Doran will be speaking on behalf of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary (Phillippines) as part of the annual Mission Appeal for the Propagation of the Faith. We ask you to please be as generous as possible in the second collection to help those who are less fortunate and are in need. Thanks for your kindness and generosity. Wishing you a peaceful summer!
