El Marino Evenor Christopher Herrera
recibe la Ciudadanía Americana Póstuma
Por: Gina Reyna
El soldado de Marina, Evenor
Christopher Herrera recibió la
Ciudadanía Americana Póstuma
en una conmovedora ceremonia en
Garden of the Gods.
Los papeles de la ciudadanía
fueron presentados junto con una
placa

una
moneda
conmemorativa con los nombres
de las unidades de Fort Carson
impresas, a la madre y al padrastro
de Evenor, Blanca y David Stibbs
de Avon, junto con otros 157
inmigrantes de 57 países que
fueron testigos de este acto y que
prestaron juramento como nuevos
ciudadanos americanos.
Para conocer más de cerca esta
historia, tuve la oportunidad de
platicar con su familia, y el Sr.
David Stibbs, padrastro de Evenor
abrió su corazón y sus recuerdos.
Nacido en Honduras el 20 de
Abril de 1983, Herrera llegó a los
Estados Unidos hace 12 años, un 2
de Diciembre de 1992, junto con
su madre Blanca y sus 3 hermanos.
Con tan sólo 9 años de edad,
Evenor pudo adaptarse a su nuevo
país y comenzar una nueva vida.
Su padrastro lo recuerda como
un niño muy obediente que
estudió en el valle de Eagle y
luego en Gypsum, Colorado.
Continuó sus estudios de
preparatoria y en sus tiempos
libres disfrutaba esquiando y
acampando. No tomaba ni
fumaba, era muy deportista; sin

Herrera’s citizenship papers, a
plaque and an engraved coin with
the names of the Fort Carson units,
were presented to his mother and
stepfather, Blanca and David
Stibbs of Avon, as more than 157
other immigrants from 57
countries watched and waited to
take their oaths as newly
naturalized U.S. citizens. The Post
Sgt Major presented the engraved
coin personally.
In an effort to know his story
more, I had the opportunity to talk
with his family, and Mr. David
Stibbs, stepfather of Evenor,
opened his heart and his memories.
Born in Honduras in April 20 of
1983, Herrera arrived at the United
States 12 years ago, in December
2nd of 1992, along with his mother
Blanca and his 3 siblings. Only 9
years of age, Evenor could adapt
to his new country and began a new
life.
His stepfather recalls, he was a
very obedient boy who studied in
Eagle Valley and later in Gypsum,
Colorado. He continued his studies
at high school and in his free time,
he enjoyed skiing and camping. He
never drank or smoked, he was
very active in sports; nevertheless,
his greater dream always was to
serve in the Armed Forces.
When Evenor graduated, He
began to work at City Market and
after his brother Balmore entered
the Army in 2002, just 17 years
old (His mother signed a special
permission), Evenor followed His
brother’s footsteps and 3 months
later, in August, at 18 years of age,
He joined the Marines.
Evenor was happy studying
there. He always wanted to be in
the infantry, although his
stepfather thought that it was the
worst place to be, nevertheless,
Evenor persisted. In the middle of

New babies are doing fine at the
Pueblo Zoo!
The staff at the Pueblo Zoo are
ready to send out birth
announcements! In August, two
births were recorded at the Zoo.
On August 4th, a bison calf was
born and on August 28th a zebra
was born. They join the other
babies born this year at the Zoo;
one Irish Dexter calf, three African
Black-Footed penguins, four Swift
fox, and seven Pigmy goats.
Of course, all babies are cute but
the Zoo thinks that the new bison
calf and zebra are “Two Cute”. All
of these babies are on display
and you can see them at the
Pueblo Zoo.
The new Zoo’s hours are 9:00
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday
through Saturday, and from
Noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Happy Birthday to me
I cannot remember when the date on the latest edition
of this newspaper corresponded with my birthday, but
this year it does.
As most of you know this is number 39, I don’t care,
that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. (I can hear the
chuckles from Denver to Sugar City)
It’s been an interesting 39 years, many ups, a few
downs. I guess we all experience the same. Why is it that some of the downs are so debilitating.
. We all seek that impetus, which will provide happiness forever, we think we found it. And
then it’s gone, can’t figure out, why me? therefore, but we continue on. It is the healthiest
option.
This is where I might normally discuss the disaster in New Orleans. I am going to leave that
alone, our family has been blessed, my sister and her husband were both employees of the
University of New Orleans, they lived there with three children. In July he got a new job at
Oregon State, they moved out of New Orleans to the Pacific Northwest. We shall forever be
thankful.
Hope you enjoyed the State Fair; it was great to see many of my 39 year old friends. I don’t
think the Fair suffered much being a few days shorter. We need to be more creative in the
future, in an effort for the Fair to grow and draw more people.
Well, it is my birthday and a very nice lady made me a nice, big, cake, so big (two extra hours
needed at the Y), I can’t let it go to waste. See you on the next birthday. Don’t forget, it will be

However, on Monday it said one

region, 10,000 of them in New

y derrames cerebrales.
Muchos expertos recomiendan
cambios en el estilo de vida como
la primera línea de prevención del
colesterol elevado, y cada vez más
estadounidenses siguen este
consejo. Una encuesta reciente
encargada por Nature Made
CholestOff, y realizada por Harris
Interactive®, revela que el 59% de
los adultos estadounidenses que
actualmente tienen o antes
tuvieron colesterol elevado
realizan cambios en su estilo de
vida para tratar este trastorno.(3)
Entre los cambios implementados
se cuentan una dieta saludable,
ejercicio físico, mantenimiento del
peso, ingestión de nutrientes con
base en fibras y vegetales llamados
esteroles
y
estanoles,
recomendados por el gobierno de
EEUU como parte de su Programa
Nacional de Información sobre el
Colesterol.
“Los cambios en el estilo de vida
no tienen que ser drásticos”,
afirma Sandra Marin, MPH,
Dietista Registrada y experta de
salud que brinda asesoramiento en
Nature Made Wellness Advisor
(http://www.naturemade.com).
“El simple hecho de incorporar
suplementos o alimentos
fortificados con esteroles y
estanoles vegetales y fibras
viscosas como la avena a la dieta
diaria puede reducir el colesterol
malo en 10% o más. Una
reducción de 10% en el colesterol
puede disminuir el riesgo de sufrir
enfermedades cardiacas hasta un
30%”.
Los esteroles y estanoles son
sustancias de origen vegetal que
naturalmente se hallan en
alimentos tales como nueces, maíz
y arroz, y ayudan a bloquear la
absorción del colesterol en el
organismo. Dado que sólo se
hallan cantidades mínimas de
esteroles y estanoles en la dieta
promedio, la mayoría de los
expertos en salud recomienda a
quienes quieren controlar su
ingesta de grasa, calorías y
carbohidratos consumir alimentos
fortificados o un suplemento de
esteroles y estanoles vegetales
como Nature Made CholestOff.
Otras recomendaciones respecto
• Agregue Color: Las frutas y
verduras coloridas tienen un
elevado contenido de nutrientes y
vitaminas esenciales y hacen más
atractivas a las comidas.
“Unos pocos cambios en el estilo
de vida pueden marcar una gran
diferencia”, sostiene Marin.

número de guías de recursos que
contendrán valiosa información en
inglés y español sobre temas tales
como los beneficios y servicios de
Que Ningún Niño Se Quede Atrás
y consejos para ayudar a los hijos
a ser estudiantes destacados. Las
guías pueden descargarse
inmediatamente por Internet en
(http://www.ed.gov/parents/
academic/involve/toolkit/
index.html).
secundaria, estamos trabajando
para introducir en las escuelas
secundarias superiores la
obligación de rendir cuentas
respecto a los resultados conforme
a Que Ningún Niño Se Quede
Atrás, para así acabar con la
imperdonable alta tasa de
deserción escolar entre los
estudiantes hispanos y otras
minorías, incluidos los estudiantes
con limitado dominio del inglés,”
agregó la Secretaria Spellings.
La guía consiste en una serie de
materiales pensados para familias
con hijos preescolares hasta
estudiantes de doceavo grado.
Diferentes
publicaciones
contenidas en la guía explican los
servicios y la información que
ahora están a disposición de las
familias con la Ley Que Ningún
Niño Se Quede Atrás y ofrecen
consejos sobre temas relacionados
con la escuela, que abarcan desde
la tarea escolar hasta la
preparación para los estudios
universitarios.
La guía contiene nueve
publicaciones del Departamento
de Educación, entre las que
figuran:
• Preguntas que hacen los padres
sobre las escuelas (Questions
Parents Ask About Schools), con
respuestas a preguntas frecuentes
sobre temas como la preparación
para el ingreso en la escuela
primaria, cómo seguir la tarea
escolar de los hijos y cómo ayudar
en la lectura;
• Una guía para leer (A Guide for
Reading), contiene consejos
imprescindibles para los padres
destinados a ayudar a sus hijos a
prepararse para leer y aprender;
• Ayuda adicional para el éxito en
la escuela (Extra Help for Student
Success), una explicación de la
tutoría gratuita y otros servicios de
enriquecimiento académico
conforme a Que Ningún Niño Se
Quede Atrás;
• La selección de una escuela para
su hijo (Choosing a School for
Your Child), ayuda a las familias
a navegar entre la diversidad de
opciones de escuela a su
disposición hoy día; y
• Cómo ayudar a su hijo a tener
éxito en la escuela (Helping Your
Child Succeed in School),
contiene una gran cantidad de
actividades que los padres pueden
usar para ayudar a sus hijos a
desarrollar las aptitudes cruciales
para superarse en los estudios
académicos.
Adam Chavarria, Director
Ejecutivo de la Iniciativa de la
Casa Blanca para la Excelencia en
la
Educación
de
los
Hispanoamericanos, acompañó a
la Secretaria.
“A nadie le importa más que
usted, la familia, la educación de
su hijo. Como padres, ustedes son
el primer maestro de sus hijos y
ustedes juegan un papel
importante en determinar la
educación de su hijo,” dijo
Chavarria.
“Otros miembros de la familialos hermanos, los tíos, y los
abuelos-también pueden tener un
papel de apoyo al crear un
ambiente en el cual se espera y
facilita el aprendizaje académico.
Comparta esta información con los
otros miembros de su familia y sus
amigos y vecinos.
Ayúdenos a hacer correr la voz
sobre cómo podemos mejorar la
educación para todos nuestros
hijos.” “Deseamos ayudar a los
padres a participar en la formación
académica-es bueno para los
estudiantes, bueno para sus
escuelas y bueno para los Estados
Unidos,” añadió la Sra. Spellings.

The Mexican government would like to express it's solidarity to the
victims of Hurricane Katrina
The Foreign Ministry reports
that the federal government has
taken several measures related to
the emergency caused by
hurricane Katrina:
• As has been reported already,
Mexico’s consulates in Houston
and Atlanta have stepped up their
protective activities in order to
assist the Mexican communities
affected by hurricane Katrina,
especially in Louisiana and
Mississippi. At the present time,
the consulates are unaware of any
deaths to Mexican citizens,
although given the severity of the
situation, the possibility cannot be
ruled out.
• President Vicente Fox sent a
message to US President George
Bush extending the condolences of
the Mexican people and
government for the devastation
caused by the hurricane in
Louisiana and Mississippi.
President Fox reiterated that once
the most urgent needs have been
identified, offers of help would be
channeled appropriately.
• Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto
Derbez sent messages to Louisiana
Governor Kathleen Babineaux
Blanco and Mississippi Governor
Haley Barbour reiterating the
support and
condolences of
the Mexican
government.
In addition,
F o r e i g n
M i n i s t r y
officials have
been in direct
contact with the
governors’ offices in
order to identify the
best ways to communicate in
order to provide Mexican
assistance and to assist any
Mexicans that have been affected
by the hurricane.
• The Foreign Ministry sent a
diplomatic note to the US embassy
in Mexico reiterating the
condolences and sympathies of the
Mexican government, informing it
of the instructions that have been
given to the consulates in the area
and making official the offer of
help in order to contribute to the
rapid recuperation of the affected
communities.
• The Mexican consulate in
Houston has commissioned a
consular official in
Belmont, Texas
to
provide
assistance to
Mexicans in
the
area.
There is also a
telephone
number (713)
778-6112 to

• Lastly, personnel from the
Mexican embassy in Washington,

US State Department on the
emergency situation in the affected
states.
US officials presented a
panorama of the situation in
Louisiana and Mississippi,
stressing that the efforts are

TRICARE unveils new
Extended Care Health
TRICARE’s Extended Care
Health Option (ECHO) will be
available for beneficiaries of
Active Duty Family Members
(ADFMs) with defined qualifying
conditions on Sep 1, 2005.
Beneficiaries who currently
receive care through the Program
for Persons with Disabilities
(PFPWD) and do not qualify for
ECHO will continue receipt of
care through TRICARE program
options—Prime, Extra or
Standard.
This new program will deliver
financial assistance and additional
benefits, including supplies and
services, beyond those available
within TRICARE Prime,
TRICARE Standard or TRICARE
Extra. The ECHO benefit also
increases the monthly government
cost share from $1,000 (through
PFPWD) to $2,500 per eligible
family member. Additionally,
beneficiaries who are homebound
may qualify for extended in-home
health care through ECHO.
Active Duty Family Members
who have one of the following
conditions may qualify for ECHO
benefits:
• Moderate or severe mental
retardation;
• A serious physical disability; or
• An extraordinary physical or
psychological condition of such
complexity that the beneficiary is
homebound.
Multiple disabilities involving
two or more separate body systems
may result in a qualifying
condition determination.
TRICARE ECHO requires all
eligible beneficiaries to enroll in
the Exceptional Family Member
Program (EFMP) of their
sponsors’ military service and to
register with their regional
contractor or Overseas TRICARE
Area Office (TAO) to obtain
ECHO benefit authorization.
To complete EFMP enrollment,
eligible beneficiaries must obtain
a DD form 2792 (medical
summary) and/or DD form 27921 (special education/early
intervention summary) and submit
the form(s) to their special needs/
EFMP coordinator for processing.
Upon completion of enrollment,
the sponsor must then show proof
of enrollment to the regional
contractor for registration into the
ECHO program. The Defense
Enrollment Eligibility Reporting
System will then be updated to
indicate the beneficiary is eligible
for ECHO.
Beneficiaries must use public
funds or programs first to the
extent they are available and
adequate for TRICARE ECHO
benefits related to training,
rehabilitation, special education,
assistive technology devices,
institutional care in private, nonprofit, public, state institutions or
other medical facilities and if
appropriate, transportation to and
from such institutions and
facilities.
For more information about
ECHO benefits, eligibility
requirements, updates, and EFMP
registration, beneficiaries may
refer to the ECHO Fact Sheet, or
visit the TRICARE Web site at
www.tricare.osd.mil/echo
Beneficiaries may also call their
regional contractor: TRICARE
Regional Office (TRO) North (1877-874-2273); TRO South (1800-444-5445); or TRO West (1888-874-9378).

Gary Barnett pulled even at 78-781 for his Division I-A coaching
tenure and is seeking to top .500

The New Mexico State game
this Saturday will feature

AUTOMUNDO
Model Overview: 2006 Volvo XC90
Making its debut in mid-2005,
the XC90 V8 became the most
powerful model in Volvo’s history.
The transversely mounted,
compact V8 was tailor-made for
the XC90 using a 60-degree “V”
configuration. It displaces 4.4-
liters and features state-of-the-art
technology with 32-valves and
continuously variable intake and
exhaust valve timing (CVVT).
The naturally aspirated V8
develops 311 horsepower at 5,850
rpm and 325 lb-ft of torque at
3,900 rpm. In addition to
providing premium SUV buyers
with the power of a V8, the engine
is also the first V8 to meet the
stringent ULEV II emissions
standards.
The XC90 V8 is fitted with
equally new, standard six-speed
Geartronic automatic transmission
and All-Wheel Drive with Instant
Traction™. The latter employs
improved, computer-controlled
Haldex AWD that instantaneously
delivers up to 50 percent more
torque to the rear axle only when
needed, such as during takeoff.
Instant Traction adds a one-way
pre-charging valve to the AWD
system that maintains a torque load
of 59 foot-pounds, which is
available instantly.
Prior to Instant Traction, if the
AWD system sensed that the front
wheels were losing traction, oneseventh of a wheel rotation
occurred before it began
redirecting torque to the wheels
with traction. That rotation could
influence performance under
certain conditions.
Also setting the XC90 V8 apart
are V8 badges on the grille and
tailgate, color-coordinated bodyside moldings and mirrors, a
graphite-gray grille, chromeplated trim around the bumper air
intake and twin exhaust pipes. A
standard tire pressure monitoring
system has been added for 2006.
The flagship XC90 V8’s interior
is equipped with a lengthy list of
luxury features. Among them are
standard leather seating surfaces
for all three rows, power
moonroof, auto-dimming mirror,
aluminum inlays and gearshift
knob, third-row climate control, 6CD in-dash changer and rear seat
audio controls.
The XC90 2.5T receives several
important changes for 2006. AllWheel Drive with Instant
Traction™ becomes a new option.
This is the same advanced AWD
system employed in the V8. Two
new hues include Lunar Gold and
Willow Green.
A new Convenience Package
includes rear park assist, power
retractable mirrors, power child
door locks and a cargo security
cover and protection net. The
XC90 2.5T continues to be offered
in a base front-wheel drive model.
Adhering to Volvo’s core value
of safety, all XC90 models are
equipped with Roll Stability
Control (RSC), Dynamic Stability
and Traction Control (DSTC),
Side impact Protection System
(SIPS) with side airbags and
Inflatable Curtains for all three
rows. The XC90 is the largest
vehicle in the Volvo lineup. A full
93.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity
and over 9.5 feet of cargo length
are available when the second and
third rows and the front passenger
seat are folded flat. Forward
facing third row seats (standard
V8; optional 2.5T) increase seating
capacity to seven. Manufacturer’s

children in the Armed Forces?
D.P: That they prepare themselves
for this situation because the
parents who have children in the
military service must be conscious
of this, that in any second they can
fall.
Because it is a terrible pain and
that, beforehand they are ready, in
case that happens like in case that
does not happen, because thus they
can give advice to others.
And on all the things, because
most of the Hispanics that
complain of this country and their
government, does not think that
this country must do what it is
doing because whom blamed of
not doing anything in 2nd World

they do not allow that this happen

G.R: What message can give us

D.P: That they act in the same way
to serve the country... one does not

valor and loyalty.
G.R: Please, give us a last
the memories that were emerging,
I had to ask the inevitable question,
what was it like when they found
out the death of Evenor?
Mr. Stibbs takes a minute to
compose himself and remembers:
“one knows that there always exist
the possibility that the son of one
can pass away in the war, but we
asked God to take care of him
every night.
Wednesday 10 August, at 1:00
a.m. approximately, I was in
Houston.
The military representative
knocked on the door and my wife
saw through the peephole... she
knew immediately what had
happened, and when they notified
to her, she went to her knees in
pain.
She called me, she notified me
of this so devastating notice and I
felt extremely desperate because I
wanted to return home
immediately. From that moment,
this has been something terrible for
us, mainly for my wife. It’s
terrible.
Evenor called once per week and
said to us that when he returned
we were going to fish, to hunt, to
camp, to take a walk; he always
embraced to me and said to me that
he loved me.
He was the most attached of my
4 stepchildren, very obedient,
never a spoiled brat. My children
always were model kids. Mainly
him.
He said to his mom: “mami, you
do not worry if someday
something happens to me, I know
where I am going, life has given
you good father and a good
husband, to take care of you”.
He always thought that
something would happen, because
it had a feeling about it
He had been in Iraq 7 months,
and the second time was as a
volunteer. , I tried to discourage
him, but he decided to go. I was
depressed because I had a hunch
of which there would be more
danger.
He returned in February of this
year to Iraq. He passed away the
10th of August...only 2 weeks
before his regiment was to leave
Kuwait by 2 weeks and soon
would arrive at California and he
would leave the danger to return.
“I am a Christian, so my greater
preoccupation as his father was:
you have received Christ as your
Lord and Savior?
And he said yes to me, that he
was ready and knows where would
go if he died. I had a debate with a
scientist about how to believe in
which one does not see, and I
asked if he had seen sometimes a
brain, and he said to me that
never... then I say to him that then
how he could think that he had
one.
I ask God to help take away the
pain from me, because I suffer and
cry every day... but is necessary to
continue forward ... God does not
fail us... and I know that I will see
my son someday. I am a man of
55 years, so I cannot complain.
I remember Job in the Bible, of
how he lost everything and
nevertheless he said to God: “do
as your will...” I was brave when I
was younger and I did not fear to
anybody, but to God, I respect him.
In spite of the loss of Evenor, his
other son, Balmore, continues with
the Marines in Pendleton, CA.
G.R: What means for you the
thought:
D.P: That this country considers
more to the minorities that are
here, because not only the
Americans have made things and
have contributed to this country,
but the Afro-American ones here
that also fought strongly in
Vietnam, in Korea, partly of the
2nd World War... that not very
often occurs the recognition them
that deserves... like other
minorities... like the Hispanics,
which they have contributed much
to this country.
Evenor Herrera died in August
10 from wounds received from the
detonation of an improvised
explosive device while conducting
operations near Ar Ramadi, Iraq.
He was assigned to the 1st
Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment,
1st Marine Division, I
Expeditionary Force, Camp
Pendleton, California. As part of
Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit
was attached to 2nd Marine
Division, II Marine Expeditionary
Force.

D.P: My son always thought about
applying for the citizenship and be
with the Marines. I requested the
citizenship. I belong here... like the
honors that they gave him, I feel
proud.
For us, Evenor is a hero, as all

Clinic transitions to Peak Vista Community Health Centers Management
Rocky Mountain Youth and Peak
Vista Community Health Centers
are pleased to announce that
effective September 7, the
Fountain Health Center will be
operated by Peak Vista.
The Clinic’s focus will continue
to be on pediatrics, serving patients
on Mon, Wed and Fri, 8 am - 5 pm
at the 301 East Iowa location in
Fountain.
In April, Peak Vista received
notification of a federal grant that
is to be awarded in December 2005
that will allow it to greatly expand
services to residents in Fountain.
According to BJ Scott, President
and CEO of Peak Vista, which has
been serving El Paso and Teller
counties since 1971, “We are
thrilled to partner with Rocky
Mountain Youth in this transition.
They have been serving pediatric
patients at the Lorraine Center in
Fountain since 2003 and they will
certainly be an ongoing resource
for Peak Vista as we extend Peak
Vista’s outreach there. We look
forward to expanding to serve all
ages in early 2006, after receipt of
the federal grant.”
Dr. Larry Wolk, Executive
Director of Rocky Mountain Youth
(RMY),
indicates
that
“Transitioning operation of the
Fountain Clinic from RMY to
Peak Vista will benefit our
patients. Peak Vista has an

A New Teaching Method For Autistic
Children
(NUE) - With the prevalence of
autism in the United States, one
company is hoping its unique
reading system will be a boon to
parents seeking new ways to help
their autistic children develop
reading skills.
About 1.5 million people are
diagnosed with autism in the
United States - a sharp rise from
only 1 in 10,000 in the 1970s.
Dr. Temple Grandin, an
associate professor at Colorado
State University and author of two
books on autism, has done
significant research into the
teaching of autistic children and
lectures on the subject around the
world.
“Many people with autism are
visual thinkers,” said Grandin,
who herself was an autistic child.
“I think in pictures. I do not think
in language. All my thoughts are
like videotapes running in my
imagination.”
Therein lies the concept behind
the Readent learning system
developed by SFK Media
Specially For Kids Corp.
The program uses “Reading
Movies,” interactive film
adaptations of classic children’s
stories in DVD format.
As the actors speak, the words
appear simultaneously on the
screen as text, providing the
autistic viewer with written words
along with the visual pictures
needed to grasp language concepts
and build vocabulary.
“The Readent system
incorporates all the modern
research for teaching reading to
autistic children, including the
observations of experts such as Dr.
Grandin and other cognitive
scientists,” said Len Anthony
Smith, chief executive officer of
SFK Media.
“Its interactive wordplay
dictionary and comprehension
quizzes and games seem to work
wonders for autistic learners.”
Grandin provides the following
tips for teaching children with
autism.
* Avoid long strings of verbal
instructions. People with autism
have problems remembering the
sequence. Instead, write the
instructions down on a piece of
paper.
* Use concrete visual methods to
teach number concepts, such as a
set of blocks that have a different
length and color for the numbers
one through 10, or wooden “fruit”
cut into quarters and halves to
teach fractions.
* Many autistic children have
problems with motor control in
their hands, therefore neat writing
is sometimes hard. To reduce
frustration, let your child type on
the computer.
* Keep the keyboard close to the
screen.
Some children have difficulty
remembering something on a
computer screen if they have to
look up after they hit a key on the
keyboard.
* Non-verbal children will find it
easier to associate words with
pictures if they see the printed
word on a flashcard.
Some individuals do not
understand line drawings, so it’s
best to work with real objects and
photos first.

Coloradans invited to participate in observing Suicide Prevention
month in September
In observance of September as
Suicide Prevention Month in
Colorado,
the
Colorado
Department of Public Health and
Environment Friday joined county
suicide prevention coordinators
and other concerned groups
around the state in raising
awareness about suicide and the
fact that it is preventable.
Suicide prevention experts from
the Department of Public Health
and Environment stressed that
suicide is not about wanting to die,
but rather about a powerful need
to end one’s pain.
Karen Mason, the manager of
the Department of Public Health
and Environment’s Office of
Suicide Prevention, said, “Ninety
to 95 percent of individuals who
take their lives have a diagnosable
mental health problem such as
depression.
People choose suicide because
they feel unable to cope with
feelings of pain, hopelessness,
helplessness, isolation and
uncertainties. The good news is
that mental health problems like
depression are treatable and
recovery is possible. Getting help
is the key. Suicide is absolutely
preventable.”
She urged anyone who knows
someone who is suicidal or with
suicidal thoughts themselves to get
help by calling 1-800-SUICIDE or
1-800-273-TALK or by visiting
the Office of Suicide Prevention’s
Web
site
at

Suicide/publicawareness.html
Mason said that between 2001
and 2003, more people in
Colorado died of suicide than were
killed in motor vehicle traffic
crashes. Four times as many died
of suicide than homicide.
Suicide is the eighth leading
cause of death in Colorado and the
second leading cause of death for
Coloradans ages 10 to 34.
“Suicide rates tend to be higher
in the western states. No one
knows for certain why that is. One
theory is that in Colorado, people
want to take care of their own
problems instead of seeking help.
We have the spirit of ‘rugged
individualism.’ Also, if you are
living far from your friends and
families, you might not have the
social support you need, so that
contributes to a feeling of
isolation.”
She added that there is a fair
amount of stigma around
seeking help for mental illness.
“Seeking help for depression or
other mental illnesses, is not a
weakness, but a strength,”
Mason said.
Signs of suicidal behavior
Mason urged, “If you or a loved
one is experiencing signs of
suicide, such as declining
performance at work or school;
losing interest in things that used
to be interesting; reckless
behavior; talk of death or suicide;
giving things of value away; or
deteriorating physical appearance,
call for help immediately.”
Ways to get involved in suicide
prevention
She provided a list of suicide
awareness and prevention
activities occurring around the
state in September and how
individuals or communities can get
involved and learn more about
suicide prevention. The activities
included:
• Joining the Suicide Prevention
Coalition of Colorado in

Secretary Spellings told the
families that the tool kit was
created to help them be more
involved in their children’s
education and have the best
education information at their
fingertips.
“This tool kit will show you
what to expect from your schools,
your teachers and your child, at all
ages and grade levels,” said
Spellings. “It will tell you how to
help your child through school,
what resources are available, and
what you, your family and your
community can do to help your
child learn.”
“Federal funding for education
has nearly doubled since 1998,”
said Rep. Wilson, known in New
Mexico for her passion for
education. “But the success of our
schools is also up to us, as parents,
grandparents, aunts and uncles.
Parents are a child’s first and most
important teachers. They are the
ones who tell children that a good
education is a ticket to a dream,
whatever that dream may be.”
Today, school children enjoy
new benefits and high expectations
under the No Child Left Behind
Act, the US law for K-12
education. These include a quality
education, regardless of one’s
country of origin or language
spoken at home. Under this law,
standards are higher, and all
schools are held accountable for
meeting them. Just as important,
parents are given information
about their children’s progress and
their school’s performance. And,
when possible, this information
must be provided in Spanish or

El Marino Evenor Christopher Herrera Continua de página 4
un hombre de 55 años, así que no
podemos quejarnos.
Evenor?
D.P: Mi hijo siempre pensó en
aplicar para la ciudadanía y estar
con los Marinos. Yo pedí la
ciudadanía a su favor. Yo
pertenezco aquí...al igual que los
por este país. Me hubiera gustado
que nos hubiera dejado un hijo o
hija.
G.R: ¿Qué les diría a los padres
que tienen hijos en el ejército?
D.P: Que se preparen para esta
situación porque los padres que
tienen hijos en la milicia deben
estar conscientes de esto, que en
cualquier segundo pueden caer.
Porque es un dolor terrible y que
de antemano estén listos, por si
pasa como por si no pasa, porque
así pueden darle consejos a otros.
Y sobre todas las cosas, porque
la mayoría de los hispanos se
quejan de este país y su gobierno
y no piensan que este país debe
hacer lo que está haciendo porque
a quien acusaron de no hacer nada
en la 2ª guerra mundial fue a los
E.E.U.U. Y ahora no permiten que
vuelva a pasar.
Unidos.
Me siento bien, porque el dio su
vida por su país. Me siento
satisfecho. Planeo seguir adelante

should obtain the new permanent
ID card within 90 days of
expiration. If beneficiaries’ cards
are not due to expire for at least
another year, they do not need to
apply for the new ID card until
their existing card is within 90
days of expiring.
The Military Health System
requires all eligible beneficiaries
to have an ID card in order to

mundial...que pocas veces se les
da el reconocimiento que
merecen...al igual que otras
minorías...como lo hispanos, que
han aportado mucho a este país.
