Welcome to Maracaibo!
Maracaibo is no exception to the
particular history of Latin American
people and towns, many of which
were re-founded on more than one
occasion.
There is no doubt that since 1529,
this land has defined its characteristics where musicians and poets have
deigned to call her by different names: “Maracaibo Mía”, “Tierra del
Sol Amada”, “Maracaibo en la Noche
Relampaguea”, many expressions
that summarize its historical and cultural values.
Undoubtedly this inspiration is for
people with an exceptional human
resource with a varied geography
where we find the Maracaibo Lake
connected to the Gulf of Venezuela,
the largest in South America and one
of the oldest lakes on earth.
Besides a cultural musical expression
that identifies us, the “Gaita zuliana”,
we have the influence of a popular
religious belief that places the Virgen
de Chiquinquirá in a place of honor.
The Tourist Guide “CONOCE A MARACAIBO” indicates places of interest
and monuments that reveal the architectural expressions of the old and
new Maracaibo.

Bienvenidos a Maracaibo!
Maracaibo no escapa a la par ticular
historia de los pueblos latinoamericanos, muchos de los cuales fueron
refundamos en más de una ocasión.
No cabe dudas que desde aquel 1529,
esta tierra tiene definida su idiosincrasia, de la que músicos y poetas se
han dignado en llamarla: “Maracaibo
Mía”, “Tierra del Sol Amada”, “Maracaibo en la noche relampaguea”, un
sinfín de expresiones que resumen
su valor histórico-cultural.
No es para menos tanta inspiración de un pueblo que cuenta con
un recurso humano excepcional,
una geografía de mosaico, en la que
encontramos el Lago de Maracaibo,
conectado al Golfo de Venezuela, el
más grande de América del Sur y
uno de los más antiguos lagos en la
tierra.
Además de la expresión cultural que
nos identifica, la Gaita Zuliana, tenemos el sello de la religiosidad popular
que ubica a su patrona, la Virgen de
Chiquinquirá, en un sitial de honor.

Las características geográficas
e históricas de Maracaibo
la hacen una ciudad particular
A través del lago recibimos la influencia andaluza de los conquistadores, de
quienes heredamos la particular forma de hablar : rápida, fuerte y con el
“vos” para referirse a “tú” o “usted”,
en la cotidianidad. ¿Vos qué queréis?,
interrogará un auténtico “maracucho”,
gentilicio adoptado por los nacidos en
esta tierra.
Maracaibo es la capital del estado Zulia,
principal productor petrolero, agropecuario y ganadero del país. Está organizada territorialmente en 18 parroquias:
Bolívar, Santa Lucía, Olegario Villalobos,
Coquivacoa, Juana de Ávila, Idelfonso
Vásquez, Chiquinquirá, Cacique Mara,
Cecilio Acosta, Manuel Dagnino, Cristo
de Aranza, Luis Hurtado Higuera, Francisco Eugenio Bustamante, Raúl Leoni,
Carracciolo Parra Pérez, Venancio Pulgar, Antonio Borjas Romero y San Isidro.
La cultura juega un papel fundamental
en la ciudad, donde sus habitantes se
han caracterizado por la creación de su
propio género musical, “La gaita”, la cual
es tradicional en las fiestas navideñas, y
marcan el inicio de la feria en honor a
la patrona del Zulia, la Virgen de Chiquinquirá en el mes de noviembre; y de
otros ritmos con calidad de exportación. Además de venerar a La Chinita
como cariñosamente llaman los lugareños a la Virgen, también se venera a San
Benito con sus tambores y armonías
que dejan sentir las distintas influencias
culturales en nuestro territorio.

The capital of Zulia state, is the major
oil,agriculture and livestock producer.It is
geographically divided into 18 parishes:

The city has its own musical genre, the
gaita, which is played during the Christmas holyday season and begins in November with the feast in honor of the patron
saint of Zulia, the Virgin of Chiquinquirá.
There are other rhythms with export quality . In addition to worshiping La Chinita
as locals affectionately call the Virgin, also
venerated San Benito with their drums
and harmonies.It shows different cultural
influences in our territory.
The climate of Maracaibo is its main feature.. Its average temperature is 27.5\º

BANDERA DE MARACAIBO
/ FLAG OF MARACAIBO
El 8 de septiembre de 1991 se adoptó el Estandarte de San Sebastián,
patrono de la ciudad, como Bandera Oficial del municipio Maracaibo,
constituida por los colores blanco,
simbolizando la pureza del santo patrono; el azul, la nobleza del Lago de
Maracaibo y el rojo, la sangre derramada por el mártir al morir luchando por sus ideales; en franjas unidas
y horizontales en el orden expresado
de superior a inferior y en su parte
izquierda superior de la franja blanca
tiene, a todo color, el Escudo de Armas de la ciudad.
FLAG OF MARACAIBO
On September 8, 1991, the Banner of
San Sebastian, patron of the city, was
adopted as the Official Flag of Maracaibo, consisting of white, symbolizing
the purity of the patron saint; blue, the
nobility of Lake Maracaibo and red, the
blood of the martyr who died fighting
for their ideals; in horizontal bands from
top to bottom,its upper left corner of
the white stripe is the oat of arms of the
city in full color.

El Escudo de Armas de la ciudad de
Maracaibo, fue otorgado por el Rey
de España Felipe IV. Se puede observar el texto “Muy noble y leal”
en las bandas que posee el escudo;
además está conformado por dos
columnas y un navío en el medio,
como símbolo de la barra del lago
de Maracaibo. Las fechas desplegada
en las bandas – 1634 en la derecha y
1965 a la izquierda, indican el año de
la concesión del escudo autorizado
por el Rey Felipe IV y el año de su
readaptación por parte del Concejo

La tradición cuenta que una lavandera
halló en el Lago una tablita que destinó
a cubrir una tinaja. Al observar algunos trazos en la madera, la colgó en la
pared. Unos golpes provenientes de la
tabla llamaron su atención para observar que la imagen, que correspondía a
una virgen y estaba iluminada con resplandor. Desde entonces y en la medida que crecía el fervor de los Zulianos,
se hicieron necesarias varias ampliaciones que elevaron la iglesia de San Juan
de Dios a iglesia parroquial hasta que
en 1855 invirtió su nombre original y
pasó a llamarse Nuestra Señora de
Chiquinquirá y San Juan de Dios.

coronada por una escultura de la
Virgen María de 8 metros sobre una
base de 7 metros, que está rodeada
por ángeles y querubines, se subdivide en 3 etapas: la de San Juan de
Dios, el Monumento de la Virgen y
San Sebastián.

EL FANTASMA DE LA CASA DE LA CAPITULACION

Era la residencia del juez de Maracaibo, su familia, y la niñera Josefa, se
dice que el yerno tenía una historia
de amor con Josefa, que despertó los
celos de su esposa. Un día Josefa fue
encontrada muerta en el patio trasero con 7 heridas de arma blanca en
el pecho, toda la familia huyó y nunca
se le volvió a ver. Se dice que el fantasma de Josefa Caballero camina por
las noches en la casa capitular, donde
se escuchan sus gritos y lamentos.
Muchos afirman haber visto manchas
de sangre de Josefa en una de las paredes de la casa.

Gardel se hospedó una noche en
este hotel en 1935, actualmente se
encuentra en ruinas, pero muchos
afirman que escuchan por las noches
el sonido de los tangos y que algunas
veces han visto la elegante figura de
Gardel asomada en la ventana.
