Let not her name depart from your lips, never suffer it to leave your heart. And that you may obtain the assistance of her prayer, neglect not to walk in her footsteps. With her for a guide, you shall never go astray; while invoking her, you shall never lose heart; so long as she is in your mind, you are safe from deception; while she holds your hand, you cannot fall; under her protection you have nothing to fear; if she walks before you, you shall not grow weary; if she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal.” Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Father and Doctor of the Church 20 Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 14 de agosto del 2016 From the Desk of Fr. Bart Prayer for Life Twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time For all who are persecuted for their respect for human life: May the Lord strengthen their faith and assure them of his closeness; We pray to the Lord: This is a bad news, good news Gospel. The bad news is that Jesus’ coming throws the world headlong into fire, anguish, and division. The good news is that in spite of Jesus speaking to the contrary, he does grant peace to his disciples after his resurrection. His gift of peace, however, does not eliminate the fire, anguish, and division. These painful consequences of faithful living sharpen the choice each of us must make: to be “baptized” with Jesus into his suffering and death. Bad news. Good news. We live with both. We make our life choice in face of both. Por todos los que son perseguidos por su respeto por la vida humana: para que el Señor fortalezca su fe y les asegure su cercanía; roguemos al Señor: Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven Assumption of Mary, Monday, August 15 Our Patron Saint, Thomas Aquinas, Doctor of the Church, once wrote: “As mariners are guided into port by the shining of a star, so Christians are guided to heaven by Mary.” I wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow, Monday, August 15, 2016 is not a holy day of obligation in the United States, since it falls on a Monday. However, it remains a solemnity and parishes are encouraged to promote the full celebration of this Marian feast. Here at STA we are offering two Mass times for the faithful to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary: 8:30 AM and 6:30 PM. St. Mary, Help of Christians, Pray for Us! Masses at 8:30 AM and 6:30 PM (Not a holy day of obligation in the US in 2016) St. Thomas Aquinas Outreach Funding 2016 I am very sorry to inform our STA family that we were unable to complete our Outreach Funding commitments. Each year we try to budget $30,000 for Outreach Funding to various organizations in our community. We make a first payment of half of the “grants” in the spring and then at the end of the fiscal year (June 30), we make the second payment if we have the funding. We do not give the “grants” if we don’t have the funds. This year, due to the high expenses of some capital improvements (i.e. new carpet and cleaning of the church floor, a new security system, and adding a bedroom and bathroom to the duplex rectory basement), that were not originally part of our annual budget, we could not afford the second half Outreach Funding payments. This is especially difficult to accept in this special Jubilee Year of Mercy. One of the organizations that we were unable to fully fund to the level we had hoped is our beloved St. Vincent de Paul Conference (SVdP). STA is the only funding source for this organization. They truly do amazing charitable works that make a difference in people’s lives. We had hoped to offer them $10,000 this year, but we were only able to afford $5,000. Obviously we cannot help all the organizations the way we had hoped, but I do feel strongly that we need to somehow fund our SVdP Conference. To this end, I would like to take up a one-time second collection next weekend at all of our Masses with the entire proceeds going to help SVdP in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Our goal will be to raise at least $5,000! Checks can be made out to STA and put in the second collection next weekend. Or you can mail a check made out to STA and write SVdP in the memo line. In this way, your gift will be credited to your yearly offering and be tax deductible. Thank you for your generosity. Fr. No, I tell you, but rather division.” Luke 12:51 Living a Stewardship lifestyle means stepping out of our comfort zone when needed. Many of us like to play it safe, not cause waves, stay in the middle of the road. In today’s world we are called to be informed and take a stance for life, marriage and religious liberty. Time and Talent On September 10 and 11, you will have an opportunity to fulfill your Baptismal promises by pledging your time and talent to pray and use your gifts and talents for God. “Learn About Our Stewardship” booklets, which can be found in the Gathering Area, offer a variety of stewardship opportunities. I encourage you to take a booklet home to see how you can use your gifts and talents. For more information, contact Holly at 833-2600 or [email protected]. Food Sunday Collection Next weekend is our monthly Food Sunday collection. This month we are collecting food donations for the Food Pantry at Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC). The LCEC Food Pantry serves those who are challenged to choose between feeding their families and paying their other bills. The demand has been great this summer when children do not have the benefit of meals at school. See the list of most needed items below. Note: The LCEC Food Pantry is making a concerted effort to provide some healthier options to their clients. Nutritious donations are doubly appreciated. hearty soups meals in a can brown rice pancake mix/syrup macaroni & cheese whole grain pasta spaghetti sauce toothpaste fruit canned in own juices canned peas, beets, spinach The Human Concerns Commission wishes to express its sincere THANKS for your generosity. In September, your donations will benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. 3 Fr. Bart’s article is continued from the previous page Congratulations to Queen of Peace Parish and the Catholic Multicultural Center Expansion! Last week in the Wisconsin State Journal and the Catholic Herald there was an article regarding the expansion of the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) to a Fitchburg facility donated by the Knights of Columbus at 5256 Verona Rd to the CMC. This is very positive news! With the Catholic Multicultural Center taking over the ownership/operation of the Knights of Columbus facility with a continuing leasehold use by the Knights of Columbus, these two local apostolates with their respective missions within the Church will be able to coordinate the use of the facility to further the mission of each apostolate. The expansion of the CMC’s “Culinary Creations” catering program to the facility (with a kitchen) benefits not only the schools, churches, and other groups served by the program, but also benefits those trained and employed by Culinary Creations with an eye to a career in the food service industry. This program is helping ex-convicts learn job skills so that they can contribute positively to our society. It is an elusive second chance for them to re-enter society. It also benefits the larger Madison community. At the same time, the Knights of Columbus are free from the obligation of maintaining and financially supporting a building, which can prove difficult, while maintaining a location to continue holding their meetings and plan their other good works of mercy that are so vital to our community. Thank you to all of our parishioners who so generously continue supporting the wonderful work of the CMC and the Knights of Columbus! Your support is bringing about so much good in our community! Tonight is Family Movie Night Dinner & a Movie When: Sunday, August 14 Where: STA - Social Hall Dinner at 4:40 PM: Pizza Party (free will offering) Movie: Charlotte’s Web (G) Time: Showing starts at 5:00 PM A Stewardship Moment In today’s second Reading, we hear from the author of the letter to the Hebrews, who likens the daily life of the Christian stewards to a race, a long-distance race perhaps, certainly not a sprint; requiring endurance and a single-minded focus on Jesus at the finish line. Good stewards are firmly committed to running the race, to live the Christian life to the fullest, to keep their eyes focused on Jesus. They don’t grow weary. They don’t lose heart. They know there is immense joy waiting for them at the finish line. Are you fully committed to living each day for Christ? Are you running the race, or are you simply jogging? Just walking? Sitting? Going backwards? Going nowhere? Some of us may want to reflect on what we can do to run the race with even more conviction. Others may want to reflect on how to simply enter the race and start running. Based on reflections from ICSC For Children and Families Music and Liturgy Corner Toddler Time for Parents of Little Ones Greg Buchberger, Director of Music Ministries Toddler Time, a group for mothers with little ones (babes-inarms through 4 years old), is happening on Wednesday and Friday mornings in the nursery. Both days are at the same time (9-10ish), use the same materials, and follow the same format, so you are welcome to attend either day or change days as needed. No RSVPs needed; come when you can and as you are! This group also does an Adoration/Childcare Coop on the first Friday of every month. Music Ministry Opportunities! Now is the time to consider joining our Music Ministry! Rehearsals begin in September. For more information, contact Greg at 608-833-2600 or [email protected] or Cantor/Small Ensemble: The cantor’s function is to support and encourage the congregation in singing. In preparation for the liturgical celebration, the cantor may introduce and teach new music to the people. Cantors lead the sung prayer at every celebration at St. Thomas Aquinas, often in small groups. They are our song leaders, animators, and psalmists. Psalmist: One of the cantors serves as the psalmist, who has the special task of drawing all present into the proclamation of the Word of God through the proclamation of the Psalm. The Psalmist introduces the Psalm response and proclaims the verses of the Psalm. STA Parish Choir: (Sunday at 10:00 a.m.) The STA Choir sings weekly at the 10:00 AM Sunday Mass. In addition, this group sings for evening Holy Day Masses, Midnight Mass, Triduum, Confirmation, and other liturgical celebrations during the Church Year. STACKS Knitting and Crochet Group Attention everyone who likes to knit or crochet or wants to learn. We invite you to join us Saturday, August 20, at 1 pm in Room 102104 of the RE Wing to make hats, scarves, blankets, and other things for people who need them. Could I really help run a food pantry? Yes! You could! Our neighbors at the Lussier Community Education Center (LCEC) have a small food pantry, and a small team (4-6 people) from St. Thomas Aquinas host the second Wednesday each month from 7-8 PM. This is a great opportunity because of the limited time commitment needed, and the evening time frame doesn’t conflict with the workday. St. Thomas and LCEC have had a long history, and as good neighbors (only a few blocks away from each other) this is a great way to build our relationship and have a strong, positive presence in support of their many good works right in our own back yard. Interested, curious? Contact Jenny Ludtke at 833-2606 or [email protected] or Grace Phelps, our parishioner who coordinates each month, [email protected] Learning and Faith for Adults Young Adult Connections The Young Adult group at St. Thomas Aquinas gathers twice a month for learning and fellowship, with a scattering of other events with the diocese. The best way to keep up with our activities is to get on the email list,. Please contact Jennifer Ludtke at 833-2600 or [email protected]. Summer Only: STA Young Adult Nights moved to Wednesdays, 7-9 PM. Our next gathering is August 17. Join us in the gathering area for fellowship and conversation about the faith. All are welcome! STA Singles Dinner Join the St. Thomas Aquinas Singles for our monthly dinner, this month at Sprecher's Restaurant and Pub, 1262 John Q. Hammons Dr., Madison on Wednesday, August 17 at 6 PM. RSVP by Monday, August 15th to Jill at 1-608-604-3070 or [email protected] Interested in Becoming Catholic? Learn about RCIA! If you are not Catholic, and are curious about what it would take to possibly become one, now is the time to find out. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process that gives you an opportunity to learn about our Catholic faith and Sacred Scripture, grow closer to God through prayer, and help you decide about receiving the sacraments and becoming a member of the Catholic Church. This process begins in early October. Make a short one-on-one appointment to learn more by contacting Jenny Ludtke, Director of Adult Formation, at 833-2606 or [email protected] National Rosary RallyPrayer for our Country At the request of Bishop Morlino, we have been asked to publicize the 54Day Novena Rosary (starting August 15 – the Feast of the Assumption) leading to the National Rosary Rally in Washington, D.C. on October 7 (Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary). This Novena and Rosary Rally is being sponsored by the Holy League with the Men of Christ in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and the Knights of Divine Mercy in the Diocese of Madison and it is endorsed by Cardinal Burke. As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy and on this centennial of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, it is a wonderful way to pray for our beloved country. The main goal is to pray the rosary every day for 54 days, asking the Blessed Virgin Mary to intercede for the needs of our country. Please see the following website for further details - 5 https://www.novenaforournation.com/. Familias Latinas Justice and Mercy for All Actividades en español Prayer for Peace Misa en español: Los domingos a las 6:30 PM Rosarios con cánticos a la Virgen: Los jueves a las 6 PM Estudios bíblicos para adultos con cuido de niños: O Lord, God of peace, you have created us and shown us your love so that we may share in your glory. We bless you and give you thanks because you have sent us Jesus, your well-beloved Son. Through the mystery of his resurrection, you made him the worker of salvation, the source of peace, the bond of brotherhood. We give you thanks for the desires, efforts and achievements stirred up by the Spirit of peace in our time, to replace hate by love, mistrust by understanding, indifference by interdependence. Open our minds and hearts to the real demands of love, so that we may become more completely peacemakers. Remember, Father of mercy, all who struggle, suffer and die to bring forth a world of closer relationship. May your kingdom of justice, peace and love come to people of every race and tongue. As a Parish family, near and far, we come together in prayer. Our First Christian Steward: The Blessed Virgin Mary On August 15 we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption; the day we recall Our Blessed Mother being assumed into heaven and crowned queen. In the Gospel reading on this day we hear proclaimed once again the Canticle of Mary, recorded in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). It is the Virgin Mary’s song of joy in response to her cousin Elizabeth’s greeting (Luke 1:41-45), and summarizes Mary’s deep faith and trust in God. This joyous song is also known as the Magnificat, from the opening line of scripture’s Latin translation which means “My soul magnifies the Lord” (“Magnificat anima mea Dominum”). The Magnificat is a beautiful stewardship prayer used by the church every day since the fifth century. It is a hymn at Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours. Among the many stewardship themes in this reading, the prayer helps us realize that God’s stewardship plan turns the world’s values upside down. God comes to the aid of the poor and lowly, to the detriment of the rich and powerful. And for those who entrust their lives to the Lord, they are filled with good things. As a young woman, humble and poor, Mary becomes an interpreter of God’s plan of salvation, she reveals to us the fundamentals of good stewardship, and she becomes a prophetic witness to social justice for all future generations who “will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48). Mary was the first disciple, the first Christian steward of God’s plan. Take a few moments and pray this stewardship prayer. Consider its implications for your life. How do you magnify the Lord? How do you make God “bigger” in your day-to-day world? How do you bring God’s compassion to the poor? 7 Special Second Collection Next Sunday to Benefit STA St.VdP Conference Checks can be made out to STA and put in the second collection next weekend.
