RIDESHARE WEEK 2014_ Intro Letter
Rideshare Week: October 6-10, 2014
#VCTCRSW2014
September 19, 2014
Social networks are all around us. We tweet, post, like, and Instagram our lives, staying in touch with old friends
and making new connections. We're sure many of your employees are the same way, and you may be, too! As
we kick off Rideshare Week 2014, we are asking commuters to join a new social network...Rideshare!
The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) and Ventura County Air Pollution Control District (VCAPCD)
have teamed together once again to get commuters connected in a new way. If you joined us for Rideshare Week
last year, you learned that using alternative transportation even just one day a week could make a difference. In
2014, we are encouraging commuters to get connected to share their commute experiences, try something new, and
reduce drive-alone commuting. Rideshare Week encompasses all forms of alternative transportation, including
carpooling, vanpooling, biking, walking, taking the bus or train, and telecommuting. We'll show you how to use
social media and internal communications platforms to promote alternative transportation, including how your
employees can connect with VCTC, VCAPCD, your employer, and one another as a new social network. Even if you
don't have access to social media at work, you can still use many of the great networking strategies as you communicate
via email and your employer's intranet.
This year, we have even more prizes to give away than ever before. The first 1,000 participants to submit a pledge
card will automatically get a $5.00 Starbucks gift card. Everyone submitting a pledge card will also be entered to
win great prizes ranging from VISA gift cards to an Apple iPad. Additional prize opportunities are also available
for those who answer the three bonus questions on the pledge card.
You, as your company’s Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) can also qualify for great incentives by having
the highest percentage of participants. Imagine how popular you'll be when you bring home an ice cream social
for your worksite or department!
To get you connected to all the excitement, we've enclosed a CD with digital versions of all the materials you need
to make Rideshare Week 2014 a success at your worksite. Posters, pledge cards, promotional ideas, sample eblasts
and memos, and social media tips are included for you to post and distribute. All materials are also available for
download at www.GoVenturaRideshare.org, or contact us and we’ll send you a packet by mail. Our website also
includes a link to the online pledge card, which lets your employees submit their pledge instantly and electronically.
Still not sure how to get started? Let us bring our Rideshare Week booth to your worksite for free! You provide
the location and notify your employees, and we'll do the rest. We'll bring giveaways, trip planning assistance, and
plenty of information on alternative transportation. It's a great way to introduce your employees to the commute
choices available to them!
Ready to get started? Call us at (805) 642-1591, ext. 119 to schedule your free worksite event and start sharing
Rideshare Week with your coworkers.

PROMOTIONAL IDEAS
• Join the coolest Ventura County social network by bringing Rideshare Week to your worksite!
Listed below are ideas for kicking off Rideshare Week with your employees. Expand your options
by asking your coworkers for their ridesharing ideas, too!
• Do you have an internal email distribution list? Share the news about Rideshare Week and send
the link to www.GoVenturaRideshare.org so employees can request a free, customized eRideGuide,
download a bus schedule, or to learn about other alternative transportation options.
• Share links to VCTC’s and VCAPCD’s Facebook @goventura and @TheAirZone or retweet mes-
sages from @goventura and @VCAPCD. Include us in your social network to keep up on all of the
Rideshare Week news.
• Set up a networking center in a central location, such as a break room or lobby, to provide pledge
cards, rideshare information, and promotional items to your coworkers. Encourage online entries
to save paper!
• Tag coworkers in a Rideshare Week post or share information using hashtags (#VCTCRSW2014).
Then ask coworkers to share and retweet.
• Utilize social media to encourage others to join in your Rideshare Week excitement.
• Go old school and add Rideshare Week items to your employee bulletin boards or create your
own rideshare bulletin board. Include your Rideshare Week posters and promotional information.
Ask managment to give employees who are already ridesharing a shout out in your break room!
• Designate prime parking spaces for carpool and vanpool vehicles only during Rideshare Week,
and give your ridesharers one more thing to tweet about.
• Host an alternative transportation breakfast…greet carpoolers, vanpoolers, bus and train riders,
walkers, and cyclists with coffee and bagels.
• Give employees a chance to turn in pledge cards by holding a designated snack break after lunch
and remind them about online entry. Everyone loves a little socializing in the afternoon!
• Recognize the department that has the highest percentage of Rideshare Week participants by
hosting a lunch time party or providing goodies after pledge cards are received.

Social Networking & Social Media Tips
What is Social Media?
Forums, online communities, blogs, social networks (examples: Facebook, Twitter)
If your company does not allow social media access during business hours, it may be possible to
implement some of the sharing tips into your company intranet or utilize them during non
business hours (such as on your ride to or from work). Send a social media themed eBlast to your
employees if you do not have access to an intra-office forum.
What are some simple Social Media tips?
Set up your account with the public in mind, projecting your true self while keeping in mind
that the entire world has access to this information (this includes all posts and photos - present
or future).
Add friends, coworkers, and family to a network from your phone or computer.
Utilize check-ins, tags, and hashtags to exponentially increase your network views and to
participate in group shares (features are specific to each social media platform).
Although your personal social network may enjoy an album full of cat photos or vacation
photos from Bermuda, your professional network may not need to see them. Use discretion
when posting and keep your audience in mind.
When maintaining or posting to a company Facebook or Twitter, follow the company protocol
for social media and always post positive, work-appropriate messages and promotions.
When posting includes coworkers and employees, only tag friends who have given permission
to be tagged in a photo or post.
What Can Social Media Be Used for?
Expanding, introducing, or controlling a brand or promotion (such as Ventura County Rideshare
Week 2014).
Relaying a message or information (such as ridesharing) quickly to friends, coworkers, or the public.
Reaching people you might not reach otherwise, such as new employees or those who do not
yet participate in ridesharing.
Generating traffic about, interest in, and excitement for a program or campaign.
Sharing information instantly, such as photos or selfies of your commute or real-time updates
about your experience.
Developing employee connections – including requests for carpool riders – via a platform
other than face-to-face or phone.
Reminding employees about your worksite’s Rideshare Week events or promotions.

#VCTCRSW2014
Rideshare Week Social Media Hashtags and Tags:
Hashtags: Use #
#VCTCRSW2014
#VCTC
#sharetheride
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by“#.” Example: #yourhashtag. Hashtags are commonly
used to show that a tweet, a Twitter message, is related to an event, conference, or conversation
online or offline, even if you do not follow them (i.e.: for creation of a public collection of
information and photos). Facebook does not utilize hashtags but if your Twitter account and
Facebook account are connected, the post will appear but will not be “live” on your Facebook post.
Tags: Use @
@goventura
@vcapcd
@TheAirZone
These are phrases or names of friends, or companies preceded by the “@” symbol, used by both
Facebook and Twitter for inclusion of tagged individual or company in your post/tweet. It will notify
those tagged that you are posting/tweeting about them. Be aware: This only works if you use the
correct spelling and form of the person’s/company’s name. You can usually tell if it is correct
because as you begin to type in the name, it will auto-fill from your friend or follow list.
You can help us promote Rideshare Week countywide by posting photos and news to the VCTC
and The Air Zone Facebook pages (www.facebook.com/GoVentura.org) about how you will be
joining the fun.
We value and encourage your comments/suggestions and photos on topics such as local
transportation and Rideshare Week and want to be a resource for the Ventura County
community. Understanding the nature of Facebook and Twitter as public forum, your feedback is
appreciated. However, as a public agency, we ask that you adhere to the following comment
conduct guidelines. Comments exhibiting the following may be deleted without notice:
Comments that are degrading, obscene, offensive, or threatening in any way to a group or
individual based on but not limited to age, disability, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
Comments that are invasive to another individual’s personal privacy or are deemed personal
attacks.
Comments unrelated to VCTC or Rideshare Week or content posted by VCTC.
Comments that include advertising or spam.
Comments that infringe upon copyrights or trademarks.
Comments that promote or incite illegal activity.
Language deemed inappropriate by VCTC staff.
