Pastor’s Note—Sixth Sunday of Easter - Year I, Cycle B
“This is my commandment: love one another as I have love you”
For the last two weeks, Jesus in the Gospel has offered us some tender and precious images of His
relationship to us. First, he described himself as the Good Shepherd. For Jesus, to be our shepherd it is not a
job, it is His life. He wants to do it. He cannot contain himself in doing what is best for us His sheep. His
salary is not in money, but seeing us remain in the sheepfold and especially return after wandering away.
Next, Jesus described his relationship between Him, His Father, and us. We are the vine, He is the branches,
and His Father is the vine grower. As God Himself is a communion of the Three Divine Persons so are we as
we are made in His own image and likeness are called to that communion in which Jesus restored us through
His Paschal Mystery. We belong to something much greater than ourselves. We are His disciples and it is
through the Church, the very Sacrament of Jesus Christ in the world that we enter into that divine communion.
Today, Jesus establishes the Law of Love. As His disciples we are called to love. The love that we hear in
Scripture is not an emotion. It is not the love we see in movies or television. The type of love that Jesus calls
us out to practice is putting others first rather than ourselves. In every Eucharist, Jesus gives His entire self
(His Body and Blood) to us out of love. Thus we are to take what we have received and practice it as we are
dismissed from each Eucharist. Its exactly what this tweet on Twitter says: “I am a firm believer that a
person’s true Christianity is revealed less in the pew than it is in the parking lot afterwards.” We are called to
love, plain and simple.
As we celebrate Mother’s Day, lets us look to the example of our mothers whether natural or spiritual.
They understand what Jesus is calling us to practice. They have placed us their children first before
themselves. God bless our Mothers!
God bless!
Father Brian
Estamos llamados a
amar, simple y sencillamente.
Dios Bendiga a Nuestras Madres!
Dios los Bendiga!
