Baptism Must be registered in parish. Parents and godparents are required to attend a pre-Baptism class. English class: first Friday of the month 7:00 PM Clase en Español: Calendario está en el vestíbulo Sacrament of Marriage A couple wishing to be married in St. Patrick Parish must contact the parish six months prior to the intended wedding date. Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in his name (John 17:11b-19), reminding them that he is always present through his Spirit. Having ascended to his Father amid cries of gladness (Psalm 103), we are to be witnesses (Acts 1:15-17, 20a, 20c-26) for we have been gifted with his spirit of wisdom (1 John 4:11-16). The preface of today’s Mass gives us insight into the church’s meaning of this feast: “He (Jesus) has passed beyond our sight, not to abandon us but rather to be our hope… where he has gone we hope to follow.” Jesus has reached his final destination and we hope to be with him some day. And Jesus is not just “taking it easy” or basking in his Father’s glory, receiving compliments from his Father for a life well lived. No, He is at the right hand of the Father where he intercedes for all of us. His work is not finished—either in heaven or on earth. To continue his work on earth He commissions his Apostles to go into the whole world and make disciples of all the nations. This is done through baptism and by teaching and preaching what Jesus said and did. Each of us is called to play our own role in this task of Jesus. We do this as we respond in our own way in faith, hope and charity, patience, kindness and forgiveness. Fr. John Cantwell Mensaje del Pastor Catholic Community of Saint Patrick Clergy Rev. Padre John Cantwell Parish Registration and Change of Address New to Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church Community? Recently moved or changed phone number? —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. FATHER'S DAY EVENT WILL FEATURE BISHOP SOTO AT RIVERCATS GAME ST. JAMES, GEORGETOWN Fourth of July: URGENT...URGENT...Time has gotten away from us and the Fourth of July is rapidly approaching. Usually, we do a fundraiser on the Fourth at the celebration in Garden Valley Park. We put up a booth and sell shaved ice! It’s been successful for the past five years and there is a “step by step” notebook with all the directions for setting up the booth. Paul Patterson donates his shaved ice machine and will happily train whoever is willing to be in charge. It’s work, but can also be a lot of fun. We need a chairperson. Please contact Lisa Patterson at 333.2292 or Trish Lyons at 622.5299 or any board member if you are interested. Funeral Coordinator: Carol Silva has taken on the responsibility of being our “funeral coordinator.” She needs help. She needs a co-chair to help her organize and she needs “worker bees” who are willing to help cook, set up the reception and clean up afterwards. It’s easy when there are more than two people doing all the work. If interested, please contact Carol Silva at 333.0463. Western Barbecue: Our biggest fundraiser of the year is rapidly approaching. The barbecue date is set for Saturday, September 12, and we have booked the “Stardust Cowboys” again this year. Please mark your calendars! We are also looking for a chairperson for this event. It has a “step-by-step” notebook with detailed instructions about how to set up and run this fundraiser. Please contact Lisa Patterson at 333.2292, Trish Lyons at 622.5299, or any other board member if you are interested. Child Care: My name is Caroline Schafer (age 18) and I have attended St. James Church for over ten years. I am seeking any families in need of my child sitting services over the summer. I have just finished my second semester at Sierra College and am trying to earn some extra money on my off time. I would enjoy spending time with your children. I am great with kids and have extensive experience with children of all ages. Please contact me at 530.333.3810. Thank you, thank you... thank you to Carol Silva and her crew for all the hard work they did for Norma Loudon’s family at her funeral service. Until you have been in need of such a service you do not realize how valuable it is. Questions, comments, inserts…contact Trish Lyons at 622.5299. Both Eileen and Al are Navy veterans and their daughter, Second Lieutenant Katelyn Reynolds is serving in the Army with the First Engineering Battalion, due to deploy overseas next November. Let us keep Katelyn and all of those who serve in the military in our prayers. I TREASURES OF OUR TRADITION n medieval times, one country, Scotland, linked its economy to the liturgy. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas. —Rev. James Field, © Copyright, J. S.
