Dear Parishioners, The following information about 2011 at St. Mary’s was shared in January’s 133 Club letter. It isn’t possible to document all that goes on in a parish because it is Jesus Christ who does the work and His work can’t always be seen or documented, but here goes... It was the 176th year since the parish was established. In this year, the Sacrifice of the Mass was offered 364 days in English, at least 3 times a week in Spanish and at least once a week in Luganda. Usually, 100 people attended daily Mass while our weekend attendance averaged 1200 people. Ninety -six infants were baptized and became Christians. Four Christians from other denominations were received into the Catholic Church. Thirty four adults and children received their First Holy Communion. Twenty-eight teenagers and adults received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Rubamirara on the Vigil of Pentecost. Confessions were heard and sacramental absolution was given Monday through Saturday every day of the year including all day on Saturday from 9-3:45 from Lent to Pentecost. The Sacrament of the Sick was offered to those seeking physical healing many, many times especially on the first Monday of the month and whenever the priests were called to local hospitals. The sick, homebound and those living in local nursing homes were faithfully visited by our Communion ministers every week. We were blessed to witness 25 marriage ceremonies - a big jump from the previous year. We were blessed to fulfill the corporal work of mercy by burying the dead. We visited the funeral homes and held 68 funerals in the church. Numerous catechists and parishioners taught the faith and how to live it to children, teenagers, and adults. Parishioners supported the youth attending World Youth Day with prayers and financial support. The 6 choirs of the parish led us in praising the Lord at Masses and concerts. Donations, especially from the Uganda Catholic Community of Boston, got us closer to completing the church restoration. With some more donations we hope to finish that work this year. The parish, through giving and donations, helped those in need through prayer and material assistance. The Saint Vincent de Paul Society provided Christmas gifts to 248 children from 134 families and 47 gift cards to Senior citizens. The parish and SVDP Society donated over $25,000 in assistance to over 336 families in need of help with food, rent and utility bills. Six thousand dollars was donated to Project Only A Child to support homeless youth in Guatemala. A prayer group for mothers who have buried their children was formed as well as a Cancer Support Group for Women. Over $26,000 was collected for the rebuilding of the church in Haiti. Donations were made to pregnancy help centers, churches in Guatemala, and individuals who have fallen on hard times. Much more to tell but I have run out of space! Your friend and pastor, Father Michael MASS INTENTIONS The following Mass Intentions are scheduled this week: Saturday, February 4 4:00 PM - Hermance Provencher Sunday, February 5 8:00 AM - Parish & Parishioners 10:00 AM Dalton Charters Wednesday, February 8 12:10 PM - Rose Paladina - 13th Anniversary Saturday, February 11 4:00 PM - Mary Leger Bourgeois Sunday, February 12 8:00 AM Parish & Parishioners 10:00 AM John Feeney - 1st Anniversary Those requesting a weekend Mass Intention are asked to make themselves known to the cantor or celebrant at least ten minutes before the Mass if they would like to serve as gift bearers for that liturgy. 1,414 people participated in all the Masses last weekend and contributed a total of $5,628 to the weekly collection and $1,417 to the Church in Latin America. Thank you! PLEASE PRAY FOR. . . The young people on retreat Saint Peter’s, Bainet Christians in Nigeria Anne McCarthy Catherine Womersly Yvon Melanson Gertrude Nicole & her family ST. VINCENT de PAUL In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Praying for the poor can bring the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. For the grace to pray privately and to pray together, Lord, hear us! For the grace to serve the poor with dedication and faithfulness, Lord, hear us! For the grace to support and care for St Mary’s Vincentians, Lord, hear us! May they have the grace to be balanced and effective Vincentians after the heart of St. Vincent, Lord, hear us! Amen. ADULT SACRAMENT CLASSES If you know of someone who is an adult Catholic who has not received Holy Communion or Confirmation, or is a baptized Christian in another denomination but would like to learn about the Catholic Faith, please encourage or invite them to attend our weekly sessions beginning Monday, February 27th. These sessions are led by a priest and a group of lay people. We set the schedule based on the best time for the most number of people but usually meet one night a week. Classes run until Pentecost Sunday in May when the Bishop will visit for Confirmation. Many people have joined us and benefitted. Please consider being with us this Spring. Contact Father Michael for more information. ANOINTING OF THE SICK The next Mass with the anointing of the sick is scheduled for this Monday, February 6th at 12:10. Anyone in need of physical healing is encouraged to come forward for the anointing. Anyone who is physically healthy is encouraged to come and pray for the sick. BLESSED PALMS The ashes for the beginning of Lent come from the burnt palms blessed the previous Palm Sunday. Anyone who has palms can bring them to the church and leave them in the Sacristy. We will burn them for Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012. CHURCH VISITS Please remember that the church building is open from 8:30 AM until 8:30 PM for personal prayer. We encourage everyone to visit the church as often as you can – pray the Stations of the Cross, pray in front of the Tabernacle, light a candle or write any prayer intentions in front of the statue of St. Joseph asking for his intercession. Please remember that on Friday afternoons, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins after the 12:10 Mass and continues until 7:00 PM. You may want to come into church on your way home from work before you go home. STATUS OF HAITI RECONSTRUCTION FUND We’ve collected an additional $96.05 to bring the new total to help rebuild St. Peter’s Church in Haiti to $26,663.08. Please keep saving your coins and loose change. Thanks! HOLY PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES Do you want to make a pilgrimage to Lourdes, France? Bob Masciocchi, CSS and Team of Married Couples ATTACKS ON GOD- 6 Update on attacks in Nigeria: A few weeks ago we learned of the Christmas Day attack on churches in Nigeria. Again on Sunday January 22nd, bombs exploded at two churches, including Our Lady of St. Lauretto Catholic Church, in Bauchi State in northern Nigeria. Although the damage was minimal and there were no victims, other explosions during the same weekend in Kano, the largest city in northern Nigeria, claimed over 175 lives and injured hundreds more. The Islamist terrorist organization Boko Haram is suspected of conducting the attacks. Boko Haram has demanded that all Christians should leave the largely Muslim northern Nigeria or face deadly force. Up to 35,000 Christians have fled the area in recent weeks. Catholic Bishop Ignatius Ayau Kaigam of Jos, another northern city, expressed fear of a civil war in oil-rich Nigeria. The bishop said, "They are destroying the hope of a united Nigeria and the only Nigerian people." The bishop alluded to what appears to be a population exchange now ongoing in Nigeria. He explained, "because of the terrorist acts on behalf of Boko several Nigerians from the south who live in the north regions are returning to their regions of origin, and even some Nigerians from the north who live in the south are coming home, for fear of reprisals." Please pray for the protection of Christians in Nigeria. Give thanks that we live in a country where we are free to worship God in peace. El plan de Waltham recomiendan alinearse con Our Lady Conforte of the Afflicted, y alinear a Secret Heart, St. Con Sn. Judes’s, and St. Charles.
