When looking back at the amazing experience I had the opportunity to
enjoy, the first things that rush to my mind are the surreal cultural differences
between the UK and Peru and all the great people I met who contributed to
making this trip truly unforgettable.
London’s fast-paced lifestyle, crowded streets and busy transportation all
well organized and mostly on time, made me feel I could use English to be
more independent than ever before. All the great sights and landmarks that
I was able to set eyes upon were mesmerizing and spectacular. Winning the

A marvellous month


Everything I did the past January was one of the greatest experiences ever. I went to
London, England in order to study English at International House. Also, I did a lot of
touring which was fantastic too. That is why I don’t have enough words to thank thee
BRITÁNICO: it made all this possible and it was there that I learnt an excellent level of
English.
When I first arrived in London I was really scared, just thinking of being on my own for a whole
ole
month made me feel nervous. Fortunately, every moment I spent there was just awesome..
A month was perfect to visit most important places of Great Britain, explore London, and make
a lot of friends from all around the world, not to mention learn about English culture.
It is really difficult to decide which place was my favourite; however, I will try to describe this trip
in a few words.

For there is in London all that life can afford

When I got off the plane, I couldn’t believe I wasn’t dreaming.
In fact, not only was I about to live in a new city, but also in a
new world! This wasn’t only a trip, but a time in which I had a
sense of freedom I hadn’t had before, as I was in a completely
new place, about to get through many situations on my own.
I recall now all the places and people I met while I was living
in UK. My host family was so kind and helpful, and the
English people I met were also like that, always very polite
and friendly.
London is a spectacular, dynamic and amazing city, with a lot
of history and culture. Being in the United Kingdom is one
of the most important things that has ever happened to me.
This time last year I didn’t think this could even be possible.
I had this life-changing trip and I am very grateful to God,
to my parents for encouraging me to study English, to my
teachers of the Advanced level who encouraged me to take
the FCE, and, of course, to the BRITÁNICO, for giving me the
opportunity of having this incredible experience.

When I arrived in London, I saw how diverse this city is. I
could see people from all over the world, as well as really
old buildings next to modern structures. Certainly, London
is a cosmopolitan city. It was such a pleasure to study in
International House London, where I met people from Brazil,
Saudi Arabia, Korea, Argentina, among other countries. This
trip made me broaden my horizons.
Visiting Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, and
also lots of landmarks in London was really awesome. I
even loved just walking down the streets of London, as you
always see something interesting round the corner. I was also
impressed by places such as Windsor, Oxford, Cambridge,
Stonehenge and Bath. Every single day was an adventure and
I had to make each one count.

Luck? I don’t think so.
I still remember when I first read the BRITÁNICO news about the winners of the scholarship.
Back then, I was in Juniors and asked myself, “Will I ever be one of them?” “I am going all
out to win this,” I thought to myself, so I did. I put a lot of effort in every single class. I’d
be lying if I said it was all work; I had fun while learning.
After I was given my FCE certificate, I was wondering if I had a chance to win the scholarship
when suddenly I was called to go up on stage and thought, “Will I be one of them?” I
jumped for joy when I was told I had won the scholarship. My dream came true at last. I
just couldn’t believe it. I still can’t.
It’s rewarding how commitment, hard work, effort and perseverance pay off. I’m the kind
of person who believes that if you want something, you have to go for it. Finally, I want to
thank the BRITÁNICO for giving me this one-in-a-lifetime opportunity as well as my parents
and my advanced teacher Maia Watanabe for their unconditional support.

ACTIVIDADES EXTRACURRICULARES
Verano full
Elvira Guzmán, Encargada de Act. Extracurriculares
Nuevamente tuvimos el placer de contar con la espontaneidad
y alegría de nuestros alumnos Juniors y Kids participando en
el programa Verano full, que esta temporada también les
ofreció un programa de manualidades novedosas de fácil
ejecución que concitó su interés y asistencia.
El periodo de vacaciones escolares es ideal para que los
alumnos varíen sus actividades y descubran, reafirmen y
ejerciten sus habilidades en los campos artístico y artesanal,
lo que definitivamente los va a ayudar a apreciar y valorar
las obras que se producen en estas áreas. En este marco,
ofrecimos sesiones de pintura en trupán en los centros de
San Juan de Lurigancho y Miraflores, donde los Kids pintaron
y decoraron carteritas y cuadros que los complacieron
ampliamente. En el BRITÁNICO Surco se programó una
sesión de bisutería, y los pequeños participantes lograron
producir bellos llaveros y adornos colgantes para celular. En el
BRITÁNICO Monterrico los Kids y Juniors, con mucha gracia,
pintaron una maceta portanotas, decorada con una flor de
trupán que complementaba con armonía esta obra. En el
BRITÁNICO Pueblo Libre tuvimos un taller de minichef, y los
entusiastas participantes evidenciaron su gusto por el dulce al
intervenir en la preparación de la torta de galletas con pudín
de chocolate.
De esta forma, despedimos a nuestros alumnos Juniors y Kids
y también el programa Verano full, dado que en los próximos
días se dará inicio a la época escolar. Entonces, damos la
bienvenida al programa Tiempo libre, a partir de marzo y
dirigido a todos los alumnos de ciclos regulares, en el que
estaremos ofreciendo clases de artesanías sencillas de realizar.

Methodology Refresher Course

Luego de una exitosa acogida en el mes de enero, en febrero, nuevamente se dictó el curso Methodology Refresher Course en las
instalaciones de Clientes Externos. Este curso, a cargo de Carlos Castillo, experimentado docente de ELT, brindó a los participantes

Talent and creativity display at Monterrico


Writing a report, a
summary, and a letter
to the author have all
proven to be effective
ways of controlling
your students’ reading.
However, that was not
the response I got when
I asked my advanced
students to do so.
students showed all their creativity and imagination: a play of
one of the first chapters from the Jurassic Park book that not
only showed a great effort to learn the scripts the students had
created but also revealed some hidden talents; a PowerPoint
presentation, which showed how connected students are to
technology; and last but not least, a well-prepared comic
book, full of illustrations and reader-friendly dialogues which
would be enjoyed by any students no matter what their level.
After such a display of creativity and eagerness to participate,
I was absolutely delighted with my students’ work.
They evidenced boredom, lack of interest and motivation.
As a result, I had to spend days thinking of and looking for
other alternatives in order to engage my students. After some
thinking time on my own, I finally realized that the best thing
I could do was to ask them to choose activities from a list I
had given them.
I would just like to thank my students for having spent some
of their valuable time to prepare these amazing presentations.
As a result of this, we had a very nice puppet show, in which

Speaking: Is it a frightening activity?


Last month, my basic 2 students worked on different projects in order to improve their speaking skill. They talked about different
topics such as describing their daily routines and talking about their favourite actors. Here some students comment about the

se corrijan de manera amena ciertos errores que pueden
haberse presentado al momento de la presentación; así, más
adelante evitamos cometerlos y ganamos más seguridad y

One of the most wonderful experiences of being a teacher is to
share our students’ energy and enthusiasm with everyone. That
was what my Pre-kids 1 students showed by doing a fishing
bowl as part of our Active Learning Methodology. It was a fun
and memorable session for my students and for me.

Thanks to the initiative of our teachers, three boards were
prepared with St. Valentine’s cards from our students who
were happy to express all their affection to their beloved
ones. From the very youngest to the adults, this was an
advantageous opportunity for them to show their skills in
using the language learnt. Fátima Chumbes with her I01
students, Bertha Gamarra with her Kids 4, Kids 5 and Infants
6 students and Yohana Rojas with her B10 students made it
all possible. Happy Valentine’s from the SJL centre to all the
BRITÁNICO family!

The most romantic illustrated story


Saint Valentine’s Day is the best time of the year to share
nice moments with the ones we love and why not with
our students as well. As part of the activities for Saint
Valentine’s Day, Los Jardines centre organized a contest for
the intermediate 12 students which consisted of writing the
most romantic illustrated story and, fortunately, thanks to my
students, we won the contest. Not only did they demonstrate
their command of English but also expressed their feelings
and shared their love experiences. Thanks to every single
student from my intermediate 12 class for their motivation
and cooperation and the staff at Los Jardines for the delicious
prize, a happy hour for all of us. It was definitely a great
occasion to unwind after class!!!
Saint Valentine came to SJL


El 14 de febrero fue un día muy especial en el BRITANICO
SJL, pues todos los colaboradores estuvimos inmersos en
esta celebración, desde nuestros alumnos más pequeños,
quienes elaboraron originales tarjetas que fueron publicadas
en nuestros boards, hasta los profesores, colaboradores de
seguridad y limpieza, quienes no dudaron en esbozar su
mejor sonrisa a la cámara fotográfica para poder elaborar un
collage de fotos que se colocó en la sala de profesores.
Además, aprovechamos la ocasión para celebrar los
cumpleaños del mes y, así, al son de palmas, risas y muchos
abrazos, compartimos momentos muy bonitos.

This month I asked my basic 7 students this question: Is St
Valentine’s day an important day for you? Why?
Most of them did not have much to say, as they are very
young and seemed not to have a partner. So I thought out of
the box and reached a decision to have my students work on
a project in which they could not only talk about that special
person we call boyfriend or girlfriend but maybe someone
they love or admire very much, and of course all of them were
really into it.
So, on February 14th, all of them arrived with their decorations
and photos of their best friends, mothers, grandfathers, etc,
as part of their presentations which were all a complete
success. In this project they not only had the opportunity to
express their deep affection and admiration for the person
they care about the most, but also to use the language learnt
in class. Firstly, I want to thank all my basic 7 students for their
participation and enthusiasm shown in their presentations.
Secondly, a big thank-you to the BRITÁNICO for their support
and for giving me the chance to write this short article.


Commemorating Saint Valentine’s Day, our Juniors and Kids
students at 12:10 made cards celebrating Friendship. Their
cards were full of creativity and variety, they all worked
together sharing ideas, pictures and different material they
had brought.
