Twelve Drummers Drumming: twelve tenets of the Apostles Creed, twelve Fruits of the Holy Spirit;
Eleven Pipers Piping: the eleven Apostles who remained after Judas’ betrayal;
Ten Lords-a-Leaping: the Ten Commandments;
Nine Ladies Dancing: nine choirs of Angels;
Eight Maids-a-Milking: eight Beatitudes;
Seven Swans-a-Swimming: seven Sacraments, seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit;
Six Geese-a-Laying: six days God created the world;
Five Gold Rings: five books of the Pentateuch;
Four Calling Birds: four Gospel writers;
Three French Hens: three Divine Persons of the Blessed Trinity;
Two Turtle Doves: two natures in Jesus, two Testaments;
(and a) Partridge in a Pear Tree”: Jesus and the Cross.
And while that makes for a popular centuries old Christmas Carol, and perhaps even a great Catechetical tool, we are told
in Sacred Scripture that on the twelfth day of Christmas:
“Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem … and behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them,
until it came and stopped over the place where the Child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering
the house they saw the child with Mary His mother. They prostrated themselves and did Him homage. Then they opened
their treasures and offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
While it was only after they saw/recognized the “newborn King of the Jews” that the Magi offered Him gifts, it is
important to note that they were already prepared/prepared for their meeting. They studied, they asked questions, and
they searched diligently until they found Him. And so: Are we prepared to meet Jesus? Do we study the things that can
lead us to Him, like our Bibles and our Catechisms? Do we ask questions of others who can lead us to Him, like the Saints?
Are we overjoyed at the sight of the place where He is? What do we do when we enter that place? Do we prostrate
ourselves and do Him homage, or do we busy ourselves paying homage to others? And what kind of gifts do we give Him
when we open our treasures? These are just some of the questions we should ask ourselves before we come home to Our
Holy Redeemer, so that we might recognize Him not only on the twelve days of Christmas, but every day of the year!

RBI ET ORBI MESSAGE OF POPE FRANCIS
CHRISTMAS DAY 2013
Glory to God in the highest Heaven, and on earth peace among those whom He favours (Lk 2:14).
“Dear brothers and sisters in Rome and throughout the whole world,
Greetings and Happy Christmas!
I take up the song of the angels who appeared to the shepherds in Bethlehem
on the night when Jesus was born. It is a song which unites Heaven and
earth, giving praise and glory to Heaven, and the promise of peace to earth
and all its people. I ask everyone to share in this song: it is a song for every
man or woman who keeps watch through the night, who hopes for a better
world, who cares for others while humbly seeking to do his or her duty.
Glory to God!
Above all else, this is what Christmas bids us to do: give glory to God, for He
is good, He is faithful, He is merciful. Today I voice my hope that everyone will
come to know the true face of God, the Father Who has given us Jesus. My
hope is that everyone will feel God’s closeness, live in His presence, love Him and adore Him. May each of us give glory to God
above all by our lives, by lives spent for love of Him and of all our brothers and sisters.
Peace to Mankind
True peace - we know this well - is not a balance of opposing forces. It is not a lovely “façade” which conceals conflicts and
divisions. Peace calls for daily commitment, but making peace is an art, starting from God’s gift, from the grace which He has given
us in Jesus Christ.
Looking at the Child in the manger, Child of peace, our thoughts turn to those children who are the most vulnerable victims of wars,
but we think too of the elderly, to battered women, to the sick… Wars shatter and hurt so many lives!
Too many lives have been shattered in recent times by the conflict in Syria, fueling hatred and vengeance. Let us continue to ask
the Lord to spare the beloved Syrian people further suffering, and to enable the parties in conflict to put an end to all violence and
guarantee access to humanitarian aid. We have seen how powerful prayer is! And I am happy today too, that the followers of
different religious confessions are joining us in our prayer for peace in Syria. Let us never lose the courage of prayer! The courage
to say: Lord, grant Your peace to Syria and to the whole world. And I also invite non-believers to desire peace with that yearning
that makes the heart grow: all united, either by prayer or by desire. But all of us, for peace.
Grant peace, dear Child, to the Central African Republic, often forgotten and overlooked. Yet You, Lord, forget no one! And You
also want to bring peace to that land, torn apart by a spiral of violence and poverty, where so many people are homeless, lacking
water, food and the bare necessities of life. Foster social harmony in South Sudan, where current tensions have already caused
too many victims and are threatening peaceful coexistence in that young state.
Prince of peace, in every place turn hearts aside from violence and inspire them to lay down arms and undertake the path of
dialogue. Look upon Nigeria, rent by constant attacks which do not spare the innocent and defenseless. Bless the land where You
chose to come into the world, and grant a favourable outcome to the peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians. Heal the
wounds of the beloved country of Iraq, once more struck by frequent acts of violence.
Lord of life, protect all who are persecuted for Your Name. Grant hope and consolation to the displaced and refugees, especially in
the Horn of Africa and in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Grant that migrants in search of a dignified life
may find acceptance and assistance. May tragedies like those we have witnessed this year, with so many deaths at Lampedusa,
never occur again!
Child of Bethlehem, touch the hearts of all those engaged in human trafficking, that they may realize the gravity of this crime against
humanity. Look upon the many children who are kidnapped, wounded and killed in armed conflicts, and all those who are robbed of
their childhood and forced to become soldiers.
Lord of Heaven and earth, look upon our planet, frequently exploited by human greed and rapacity. Help and protect all the victims
of natural disasters, especially the beloved people of the Philippines, gravely affected by the recent typhoon.
Dear brothers and sisters, today, in this world, in this humanity, is born the Saviour, Who is Christ the Lord. Let us pause before the
Child of Bethlehem. Let us allow our hearts to be touched, let us not fear this. Let us not fear that our hearts be moved. We need
this! Let us allow ourselves to be warmed by the tenderness of God; we need His caress. God’s caresses do not harm us. They
give us peace and strength. We need His caresses. God is full of love: to Him be praise and glory forever! God is peace: let us
ask Him to help us to be peacemakers each day, in our life, in our families, in our cities and nations, in the whole world. Let us
allow ourselves to be moved by God’s goodness.”
Please Pray for Our Priests
Heavenly Father, please grant to Your Faithful servants, the grace and strength to carry out Your mission
for the Church each day. Keep our Priests close to You and continue to inspire them to serve others in
Your Holy Name. Please help to inspire men who are called to a Priestly vocation to answer Your call
and to participate in the fullness that You have planned for them. Amen.

The Second Vatican Council
“What did the Second Vatican Council accomplish?” I ask. “What does it mean?” In light of his previous affirmations, I
imagine that he will deliver a long and articulate response. Instead I get the impression that the Pope simply
considers the council an event that is not up for debate and that, as if to stress its fundamental importance, is not
worth discussing at too great a length.
“Vatican II was a re-reading of the Gospel in light of contemporary culture,” says the Pope. “Vatican II produced a
renewal movement that simply comes from the same Gospel. Its fruits are enormous. Just recall the liturgy. The
work of liturgical reform has been a service to the people as a re-reading of the Gospel from a concrete historical
situation. Yes, there are hermeneutics of continuity and discontinuity, but one thing is clear: the dynamic of reading
the Gospel, actualizing its message for today—which was typical of Vatican II—is absolutely irreversible. Then
there are particular issues, like the liturgy according to the Vetus Ordo. I think the decision of Pope Benedict [his
decision of 7 July 2007, to allow a wider use of the Tridentine Mass] was prudent and motivated by the desire to
help people who have this sensitivity. What is worrying, though, is the risk of the ideologization of the Vetus Ordo,
its exploitation.”
To Seek and Find God in All Things
Pope Francis’ words weigh heavily upon addressing the challenges of today. Years ago he had written that in order to
see reality one must look with a gaze of faith. Otherwise one sees only small pieces of a fragmented reality. This is
also one of the themes of the encyclical "Lumen Fidei." I am also thinking of a few passages from Pope Francis’
speeches during the World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro. I quote them to him: “God is real if he shows himself in the
here and now.” “God is everywhere.” These are phrases that echo the Ignatian expression “to seek and find God in
all things.” Therefore I ask, “Your Holiness, how does one seek and find God in all things?”
“What I said in Rio referred to the time in which we seek God,” he answers. “In fact, there is a temptation to seek
God in the past or in a possible future. God is certainly in the past because we can see the footprints. And God is
also in the future as a promise. But the ‘concrete’ God, so to speak, is today. For this reason, complaining never
helps us find God. The complaints of today about how ‘barbaric’ the world is—these complaints sometimes end up
giving birth within the Church to desires to establish order in the sense of pure conservation, as a defense. No: God
To be continued next Sunday . . .
is to be encountered in the world of today.”
What happens after Christmas?
While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars on 25 December, many of the important
feasts of the Church year move, based upon the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each year moving to
the Sunday after the "Paschal Full Moon," and can fall between 22 March and 25 April.
In ancient times before calendars were common, most people did not know the dates for the upcoming
Liturgical year. On Epiphany Sunday, the upcoming dates were "proclaimed" after the Gospel in this way:
Dear brothers and sisters,
the glory of the Lord has shone upon us,
and shall ever be manifest among us,
until the day of His return.
Through the rhythms of times and seasons
let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation.
Let us recall the year's culmination,
the Easter Triduum of the Lord:
His last supper, His crucifixion, His burial,
and His rising celebrated
between the evening of the Seventeenth day of April
and the evening of the Nineteenth day of April,
Easter Sunday being on the Twentieth day of April.
Each Easter -- as on each Sunday -the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed
by which Christ has forever conquered sin and death.
From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy.
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent,
will occur on the Fifth day of March/5 March 2014.
The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on
Sunday, the Twenty-ninth day of May/29 May 2014.
Pentecost, joyful conclusion of the season of Easter,
will be celebrated on the Eighth day of June/8 June 2014.
And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be
on the Thirtieth day of November/30 November 2014.
Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the passover of Christ
in the feasts of the holy Mother of God,
in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints,
and in the commemoration of the faithful departed.
To Jesus Christ, Who was, Who is, and Who is to come,
Lord of time and history,
be endless praise, for ever and ever.
Amen.

GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, AND MYRRH/TIME, TALENT, AND TREASURE
The Scriptures tell us that an early encounter with Our Holy Redeemer led magi from the east to prostrate
themselves, do Him homage, open their treasures, and offer Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (cf. Saint
Matthew II: 1 -12). In many ways, the Sunday Bulletin of Our Holy Redeemer tells us the same thing: people
enter the house (church), prostrate themselves (genuflect, enter their pew, and kneel), open their treasures
(their hearts), and offer Him gifts (time, talent, and treasure).
Please accept my gratitude for your offering. Whether it’s the 25 cents (and more) a
week that helps me to satisfy the material and spiritual needs of more than three
thousand registered families, or the Catholic Ministries Appeal which helps me to
express our indebtedness to Bishop Murphy while at the same time helping him to
provide those same needs to people beyond the borders of our Parish, your offering
is making a difference; or rather “you” are making a difference!
Let us pray that more people will choose to come home, enter the house, encounter
Jesus, prostrate themselves, open their treasures, offer Him gifts, and make a
difference with us in 2014.

FAITH AND PRAYER
SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
We all love the Feast of the Epiphany. Matthew’s story of the Magi from the east that come in
search of the New Born King of Israel touches all of us, because, in many ways, like the Magi from
the story, we are on a journey towards Jesus, our King (See Matthew 2:1-12). Our faith, shining as a
star in our hearts, guides us to Jesus. The Word of God as it was the case with the Magi serves as
a light to our feet pointing the way to the Bethlehem of our hearts. We are not alone in the
journey; Jesus Himself accompanies us, as well as His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint
Joseph, and all the other Saints as well. Our families, our brothers and sisters in the faith, our
friends, and our coworkers accompany us in this life long journey too. As we journey with all of
them, we bring our own gifts, our gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We use these gifts along the
journey to help others, and in so doing, we bring glory to God, and do homage to Him Who made
us all. May this Holy Feast of the Epiphany help us to use our gifts to call others to accompany us
in our search for the Newborn King of Israel!

FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL
PRAYERS FROM THE ROMAN MISSAL THAT YOU MAY NEVER HEAR
(AND A WORD FROM SAINT LEO THE GREAT )
“When the brightness of a new star had led three wise men to
worship Jesus, they did not see Him ruling over demons, not raising
the dead, not restoring sight to the blind or mobility to the lame or
speech to the dumb, nor in any action of Divine power. They saw
Him, rather, as a Child - silent, at rest, placed in the care of His Mother
- in a situation where there appeared no indication of power.
From this lowliness, however, a great miracle was presented.
Consequently, the mere sight of that Sacred Infancy to which God the
Son of God had adapted Himself was bringing to their eyes a
preaching that would be imparted to their ears. What the sound of His
voice was not yet presenting, the activity of sight was teaching them.
For the entire victory of the Saviour, the One that overcame the devil
and the world, began in humility and ended in humility. Its appointed
time began under persecution and ended under persecution. Neither the endurance of suffering was lacking to the
child, nor the gentleness of a child to the One who would suffer. For, the Only-Begotten Son of God undertook by a
single inclination of His majesty both the will to be born as a human being and the ability to be killed by human beings.
Almighty God, therefore, made our extremely bad situation good through His unique lowliness and "destroyed death"
along with the author "of death." He did not refuse anything that His persecutors brought down on Him. In obedience
to the Father, He bore the cruelties of violent men with the meekest docility. How humble we ought to be, then, how
patient, we who, when we meet with any distress, never undergo anything we do not deserve! "Who will boast that
they have a pure heart or that they are clean from sin?" (Prov. 20, 9). Blessed John says, "If we say we have no sin, we
are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us" (1 Jn. 1, 8).
Who will be found so free from guilt that they have not in themselves anything for justice to condemn or mercy to
forgive? Consequently, dearly beloved, the whole learning of Christian wisdom consists not in abundance of words,
not in cleverness at disputing, not in desire for praise and glory, but in a true and willing humility. This is what the Lord
Jesus Christ chose and taught from within the womb of His Mother right up to His torment on the Cross - by enduring
everything with fortitude. When the disciples, as the Evangelist says, arguing among themselves as to "which one of
them would be greater in the Kingdom of Heaven, [Jesus] called a little child and stood him in their midst and said:
'Amen, I say to you, unless you change yourselves and become like little children, you will not enter the Kingdom of
Heaven. Whoever, therefore, humble themselves like this child will be the greater in the Kingdom of Heaven."
Christ loves the Childhood that He first took up in both soul and body. Christ loves childhood, the teacher of humility,
the rule of innocence, the image of gentleness. Christ loves childhood, to which He directs the characters of older
people, to which He brings back old age. Those whom He would raise up to an Eternal Kingdom He disposes to follow
His own example."

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
Happy and Blessed New Year to all!
The students of The De La Salle School at Our Holy Redeemer returned to class on Thursday and
welcomed Brother Armando Solano Suarez, FSC. Brother Armando, a teacher at a Lasallian
Catholic school in Bogotá, Colombia, is visiting us for a week. Colombia is one of more than
eighty countries where the De La Salle Christian Brothers and their colleagues are engaged in the
ministry of education. (Visit www.LaSalle.org to learn more about our international presence that
touches the lives of almost one million students!)
While it is always a special opportunity for our students to meet members of our Lasallian family from other parts of the
globe it is also a treat to have one of our Brothers featured prominently in a national magazine. The current issue of
Columbia, the monthly published by the Knights of Columbus (K of C), has a photo and a testimony by Brother David
Deradoorian, FSC on the back cover. Brother David is a member of the District of Eastern North America, the sponsors of
The De La Salle School here in Freeport. He is currently spending year of in Napa, CA in anticipation of his profession of
first vows this summer. Maybe he will be on the faculty of The De La Salle School someday! The K of C allocates the
space on the back cover to highlight young men and women serving our church as brothers, sisters or clergymen and
inviting the faithful to pray for vocations so that the number of such individuals increases. Please add this intention to
your prayers! For information on becoming a De La Salle Christian Brother contact Brother Thomas (516-379-8660 /

“create” opinion and impose it on others.’ Both the New Mexico Supreme Court and the Federal Court in Utah imposed a
wrong decision about the meaning of marriage onto the people of their respective states.”
The Archbishop further said, “We must start off with the right question. It is not, ‘Is there a government interest in not
recognizing alternative types of relationships as marriage?’, but rather, ‘Is there a public interest in societal recognition and
regulation of the only kind of relationship that brings children into the world?’ Every human society in history has
recognized that there is. By losing sight of this fundamental reality, confusion and error triumph.”
Archbishop Cordileone of San Francisco is the chairman of U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Subcommittee for the Promotion & Defense of Marriage.
IN LIGHT OF NEW MEXICO’S BAD DECISION,
IT’S TIME ONCE AGAIN TO HEAR FROM PASTOR JOE WRIGHT:
“Heavenly Father,
We come before You today to ask Your Forgiveness and seek Your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says,
''Woe to those who call evil good,'' but that's exactly what we have done. We have lost our Spiritual equilibrium and
inverted our values. We confess that; we have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it pluralism; We have
worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism; We have endorsed perversion and called it an alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery; We have neglected the needy and called itself preservation; We have
rewarded laziness and called it welfare; We have killed our unborn and called it choice; We have shot abortionists and
called it justifiable; We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem; We have abused power
and called it political savvy; We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition; We have polluted the air
with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression; We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our
forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, O God, and know our hearts today; try us and see if there be some
wicked way in us; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been sent
here by the people of this state and who have been ordained by You, to govern this great state of Kansas. Grant them your
wisdom to rule and may their decisions direct us to the center of Your Will.
I ask in in the name of your Son, The Living Saviour, Jesus Christ” (23 January 1996, Topeka, Kansas).

NOW A WORD FROM OUR SAINTS
FROM AN EPIPHANY SERMON BY SAINT BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX
“FOR ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORT WICKED GOVERNMENTS”
“To-day we have heard read in the Gospel of the Feast that Wise Men came from the East to
Jerusalem. With good reason did they come from the East who announced to us the new rising of the
Sun of Justice, they who illuminated the whole world with their joyful tidings. Unhappy Judea alone,
on the contrary, by hating the light, was
plunged into a deeper darkness by the
effulgent brightness of the new light; her
eyes, already clouded, were more incurably
blinded by the flashing radiance of the
Eternal Sun.
Let us listen to the words of these Wise Men
coming from the East: " Where is He that is
born King of the Jews? What unwavering
faith! They have no hesitation. They do not
question the fact of His birth, but only inquire
where it had taken place. At the mention of
the word "King" Herod was “troubled”,
greatly fearing one who would supplant him
in his kingdom. That he should fear is not
surprising, but that Jerusalem the City of God,
the Vision of Peace should be troubled with
him is indeed a matter for wonder. Behold,
how hurtful a wicked government is whose
head seeks to bring subjects to conform to its
own evil views! Woe to that State where a
Herod reigns! It will without doubt share his
impiety, and, like him, be troubled at the
tidings of salvation. I trust in God that such a
spirit will never reign among us, if, indeed, it
has begun to get a footing, which may God forbid. It is the malice of a Herod to oppose and seek to
stifle in their birth any rising efforts in the cause of religion, and to take part in what destroys the
souls of God s little ones. To do so is to join with Herod in seeking to murder the new-born Saviour.”

 DOS MENSAJES DEL PASTOR 
ENTRANDO EN EL 2014 CON EL PADRE ARCOLEO
Claro, Claro, Claro …
(vea Fil. I:6)!
 Doce Tamboriles: doce principios del Credo de los Apóstoles, doce frutos del Espíritu Santo;
 Once Gaiteritos: los once Apóstoles que quedaron después de la traición de Judas;
 Diez Señores Saltando: los Diez Mandamientos;
 Nueve Bailarinas: nueve coros de Ángeles;
 Ocho Lecheritas: ocho Beatitudes;
 Siete Cisnitos: siete Sacramentos, siete Dones del Espíritu Santo;
 Seis Mamá Gansas: en seis días Dios creó al mundo;
 Cinco Anillos Dorados: los cinco libros del Pentateuco;
 Cuatro Pajaritos: los Cuatro Escritores de los Evangelios;
 Tres Gallinitas: las tres Divinas Personas de la Santísima Trinidad;
 Dos Tortolitas: las dos naturalezas de Jesús, los dos Testamentos;
hacia Jesús, nuestro Rey (Vea San Mateo 2:1-12).
nuestros dones, nuestro oro, incienso y mirra.

(San
Ignacio de Antioquía, Epistula ad Romanos, 6, 1-2).
