Today’s Gospel Reflection
First Reading: 1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21 * Psalm: Ps 16:1-2, 5, 7-11 *
Second Reading: Gal 5:1, 13-18 * Gospel: Lk 9:51-62
PEACE
The greeting of peace at Mass adds
substance to a message of today’s readings:
peace is relational. When we greet in peace
the person near us at Mass, we share the
touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere
eye contact, and friendly words.
The scriptures speak of a similar peace.
The first reading from Isaiah describes the
peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of
prosperity and comfort where the “LORD’s power shall be known
to his servants” (Isaiah 66:14c).
The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly.
Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who are created
anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those
who accept his disciples and their message.
Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing.
May we always and sincerely bring peace to our own lives as
we share it with others.

Dear Parishioners and friends,
PASTORS’ MESSAGE
Bishop Robert McElroy Issues Statement on US Supreme Court Decisions
to Strike Down Abortion Statutes in Texas, Mississippi and Wisconsin
“A series of decisions by the Supreme Court this week striking down
abortion statutes in Texas, Mississippi and Wisconsin is another sign of the
failure of our national legal and political system to protect human life at its
most vulnerable. It is also an ominous signal that even the most modest legal
steps to protect the life of the unborn are likely to be blocked by a judicial
philosophy and political culture which effectively annihilate the human identity
of the unborn child while pretending to accord presumptive recognition to the
stark reality which both morality and science attest – that a preborn child is
indeed a human life.
“Let us pray and work together to create a society in which children in the
womb might be accorded the most fundamental human right of life which is the
heritage of us all.”

"You are called to stand up for life!
To respect and defend the mystery of life always and everywhere,
including the lives of unborn babies, giving real help
and encouragement to mothers in difficult situations.
You are called to work and pray against abortion."

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JULY 03, 2016
The mission of the Academy is to form young disciples to be spiritually, intellectually, and socially prepared to integrate gospel
values for living a Catholic, Christian life in a secular world. We are committed to providing a Christian environment where
students experience God through exploration of their lives and the wonders of His creation. The Academy envisions itself as a
partner with parents; sharing the educational ministry of the Church.
Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
The 4th of July has special significance for us in this country; freedom! God has blessed us
in so many ways. As you celebrate this weekend, please remember to keep in prayer the men and women who
work to keep us free. May all who live and work in these beautiful 50 states continue to know the splendor of
God holding us in the palm of His hand.
Blessing Our Future: If you have not yet pledged $1 a day for Catholic education, please take the
time to do so and help our parish families realize the gift of a lifetime; a Catholic education at St.
Michael Academy! Any donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated: www.fiatcatholicschools.com.
Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade school.
Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s Catholic
education can fit into your budget. Call 619 470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis at [email protected]. Fr. Manny offers a
$1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Some say tomato—and some say tomahto—you know the
old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a
font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning?
Well, maybe you will say that “we’re having a baptism today,” or
maybe you say “we are having a christening.” The proper term
is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the
persistent use of “christening” in our culture, probably from due
to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting.
Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip
or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes
perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the
person being baptized is being “Christ-ed.” No matter what you
call it, there’s always water involved, and then an anointing with
chrism—fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ’s
presence—poured upon the brow as we say, “As Christ was
anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a
member of his body, sharing everlasting life.”
So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your
life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you—
even though you may be squirming or sleeping—are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are
called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth,
you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment.
That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you
gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so
that you can be more “Christ-ed.” No matter what vocabulary you
assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human
person in the community of the Body of Christ.

STEWARDSHIP
A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Weekend of July 2/3, 2016
In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus inviting his disciples to be
evangelizers. “The harvest is abundant,” Jesus says. But those
who are willing to invite others to a deeper relationship with the
Lord are few. Good stewards who are willing to witness their
Catholic faith to others know they are “like lambs among
wolves.” They are encouraged to be gentle, patient and loving,
knowing they may face rejection and even fierce opposition.
The Year of Mercy invites us to be better stewards of our
faith, to give positive, courageous, joyful witness to others who
have turned away from their relationship with Jesus. Is there
someone we should be reaching out to this week?
- International Catholic Stewardship Council, Parish Enews
Jubilee Year of Mercy
July 3, 2016
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Last Sunday, Jesus rebuked James and John for wanting
to “call down fire from heaven” (Luke 9:54–55) on an unwelcoming town. As he sends forth disciples today, Jesus again forbids
retaliation against non-receptive listeners (10:10–11), showing
us how to be Jesus’ “missionaries of mercy” this Jubilee Year of
Mercy. Like the first disciples, we are sent not to proclaim
ourselves but Jesus. As Jesus sent them in pairs, so are we also
to work together in the community of the Church. We often
describe the Church as Isaiah describes Jerusalem in today’s
first reading, our comforting, nurturing Mother (Isaiah 66:13). So,
going forth gently, like lambs among wolves (Luke 10:3), we
share comforting peace, nurturing food and drink (Luke’s image
for Eucharist), and Jesus’ healing promise of unfailing, unconditional mercy (10:5, 7, 9). Thus Jesus bids us proclaim the
kingdom of God by showing what God’s kingdom looks like in
action. “Go, preach the Gospel,” Pope Francis’ saintly namesake
of Assisi is said to have instructed his first friars, “and when
necessary, use words!”

A STEWARDSHIP PRAYER
For JULY
Gracious God,
You sent your Son to proclaim the Good News,
inspire us in faith and show us the way
to be good stewards of Your mercy.
In this month of July
dedicated to the Most Precious Blood of Jesus,
grant us the wisdom to recognize
that through His gift of the Eucharist
there is but one cup of covenant and communion.
Give us the courage
to magnify Your presence in word and deed.
And through Your Spirit
teach us to live,
no longer for ourselves,
but in Christ Jesus
who lives and reigns with You
and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.
Amen.
ORACIÓN DE CORRESPONSABILIDAD
para el Mes de JULIO
Dios bondadoso,
quien vive y reina contigo

humanos. Vengan con toda la familia! Para mayores informes
comuniquese con los Señores Gonzales al (619) 479-7452.

“I think we too are the people who,
on the one hand, want to listen to Jesus,
but on the other hand, at times, like to find a stick to beat others with,
to condemn others.
And Jesus has this message for us: MERCY .…
THIS IS THE MOST POWERFUL MESSAGE: MERCY!”
- Pope Francis
YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be
merciful like the heavenly Father, and have
told us that whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and
Matthew from being enslaved by money; the
adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things; made
Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the
repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of
us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If
you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the
invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above
all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible
face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that
your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order
that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and
error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after,
loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate
every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of
Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your
Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to
the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and
restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with
the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

Happy 4th of July!
IN GOD WE TRUST!
It cannot be emphasized too
strongly or too often that
this great nation was founded,
not by religionists,
but by Christians;
not on religions, but on the
gospel of Jesus Christ.
For this very reason peoples of
other faiths have been afforded
asylum, prosperity, and freedom
of worship here.”
- Patrick Henry
“If we ever forget that we are
One Nation Under God,
then we will be a nation gone under.”
- Ronald Reagan
Bible Study on the Gospel of Luke will be held
every Thursday, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in
the Parish Hall. Watch the video presentation
and participate in discussion with Fr. Manny, Fr.
Bernard and Deacon Carl. St. Jerome says
“Ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Christ!
This is open to all parishioners and non-parishioners. No cost to
participants.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness
and the snares of the devil. May God
rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do
Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host
- by the Divine Power of God - cast
into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
