Hello friends,

The board meeting opened with a report from Bill Meers on the
Chimp Mail. You may have noticed that messages from Dayton
Friendship Force are no longer coming from Bill and Mary Lou
Meers’ personal email address, but from Friendship Force of Dayton.
Bill has switched us over to Chimp Mail and opened a gmail account
for Dayton FF. This is supposed to be a little more secure.

The ED from the Tauranga Western Bay of Plenty in New Zealand contacted me with a
tentative schedule for visiting the Memphis, Dayton, and Connecticut. They plan to be in
the U.S. between the 25th of May and the 18th of June. I do not know the exact time for
the Dayton visit, but I would assume it would be sometime in the middle. We are still
looking for an ED for that exchange.
The board is currently appointing an ED exchange committee. We have two people at this
time, Julie Vann and Steve Birt. We would like to have one more person. Betty Darst, Joe
Scullion, and Bob Remm served in that capacity in the past, and we want to thank them
for their years of service.
Julie now has 19 members for the Peru exchange. I am sure they are in for a great time. I
really enjoyed my time in Peru.
We are moving our fall picnic up to September 22nd to coincide with the farewell party for
the Memphis ambassadors. It will be held at Indian Riffle Community Park. We hope to
see all of you. We always have a great time and such good food.
Connie Amos has corresponded with other Friendship Force clubs about domestic exchanges. Wichita and Dubuque have responded with an invitation. Several clubs would
like to visit Dayton.
Tentative dates for a regional meeting are June 1 and June 8, 2014. It will be in Cincinnati.
The Cincinnati president has written to me requesting help from those living on the south
side of Dayton for home hosting. The Cincinnati club is not large enough to host all of the
possible participants. Please let me know if you would be able to home host.
In friendship,

T
he board is requesting input from its membership regarding the future of the Greenville Picnic.
The picnic has not been held for the past couple of years because of damage the shelter house sustained from a summer
storm and because of past city park financial constraints, issues
that have since been resolved.
The question facing the board is: Is there sufficient membership interest to resume the event in
Greenville?
Please email your response to Steve Birt at [email protected] by September 16, the board's next
meeting.

riendship Force Member to speak at Peace Museum. The following is an announcement from the Peace Museum:
GARY MITCHNER TO DISCUSS FRIENDSHIP FORCE
A World of Friends is a World of Peace
The Dayton International Peace Museum will present its final program in connection with the current exhibition on Citizen Diplomacy on Sunday, September 8, at 2:00 PM when Gary
Mitchner will describe the work of Friendship Force and his involvement in their activities. Gary has traveled with Friendship Force to China, Russia, India, Morocco, Switzerland, England, Scotland, Australia,
New Zealand, Estonia, Spain, Majolica, Germany and countless places in the US.
Friendship Force International was introduced in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter at a White House gathering of state governors and in 1992 was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Friendship Force provides
opportunities to explore new countries and cultures by bringing people together at the personal level.
Local hosts welcome international visitors into their homes, sharing meals and conversation, and the
sights and experiences of their community.
Founded in 1979, the Friendship Force of Dayton received the international “Outstanding Achievement
Award” in 2003. Since its inception, the Dayton club has been involved every year with both incoming
and outgoing exchanges, including such fascinating places as Turkmenistan, Japan, Cairo, Egypt, Pau,
France, Riga, Latvia and St. Petersburg, Russia. They also have a special relationship with Sarajevo, BosniaHerzegovina, the destination of many FF trips including the 1996 trip, which was the first civilian tour to
this war-ravaged city after the Peace Accords were hammered out in Dayton in 1995.
Gary Mitchner served for many years as professor of English at Sinclair Community College and directed
the Annual Writers’ Workshop. Upon retirement Gary was appointed Professor Emeritus and Poet Laureate by Sinclair’s president. He has published countless poems in The Paris Review, The New Republic, The
Best American Poems, 1991, and many more. Since retirement, he has volunteered for Friendship Force,
the Peace Museum, Miami Valley Hospital, the Jane Austen Society, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Human
Race Theatre, Futurefest at the Dayton Playhouse, and the Dayton Art Institute where he is a docent.
The Peace Museum is located at 208 W. Monument Avenue in downtown Dayton. Free parking is available behind the museum, accessible from Wilkinson. There is no charge and reservations are not required although seating is limited. For further information, call the museum at (937) 227-3223.

elcome to Friendship Force of Memphis, Tennessee, Sept
19-23
By Bill and Mary Lou Meers
We are excited to have a group of 16 ambassadors from Friendship Force of Memphis,
Tennessee visit Dayton from September 19 to 23. This is a true “exchange” as Memphis generously
hosted a group from Friendship Force of Dayton in May 2009.
We invite our Dayton Friendship Force community to join our Memphis friends at some of their
events. We especially hope you will attend our annual Dayton Friendship Force picnic on Sunday,
September 22, at Kettering’s Indian Riffle Park. Our community picnic will also serve as their farewell as their exchange comes to an end. (More information about the picnic elsewhere in the newsletter.)
We will begin their visit on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the
Friendship Force Peace Pole at Deeds Point. If you
haven’t been to the Peace Pole recently, this is a great
time to see how great it looks after recent cleaning—
and to welcome our Memphis friends.
On Friday evening, we will gather in downtown Dayton
for the fall edition of Urban Nights and food and drink
at the “Taste of the Miami Valley” at RiverScape.
Learn more about this exciting community event at
this website: http://tasteofmiamivalley.com/
We will of course share some of Dayton’s cultural
treasures with the Memphis ambassadors, including
the Dayton Art Institute, Dayton History’s Carillon Historical Park, Cox Arboretum, and the Dayton International Peace Museum.
