Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
"He called them, and immediately they left their
boat and their father and followed him." James and his
brother John dropped everything to follow Christ. In
leaving their boat, they also left their livelihood. In
leaving their father, they said farewell to the comforts
of home and family. They embarked on this unknown
journey with Jesus, traveling "around all of Galilee,"
with neither stability nor security. All they had was
trust. How remarkable this is! They had such great
faith in this man who "called them" on the seashore.
Clearly, their encounter with Christ was life-changing,
even before they knew the full truth of who Jesus
was.
We, on the other hand, already know. We have the
benefit of being on the other side of Christ's life. We
know about his miracles, his resurrection, and the
whole history of Christian faith. In a sense, it should
be easier for us to "leave our nets" than it was for the
sets of brothers in today's Gospel. We have so many
reasons to believe that Jesus was truly the Son of
God. But yet how often do we resist the call to surrender our lives to Christ? How attached we are to
our regular routines and our predictable plans. Yet,
where would we be today if the apostles had tried to
part-time it with the Lord? What if they had only followed him on the weekends? Would the Christian
message have spread at all? So much was accomplished through the sincere faith of these humble fishermen. What could we accomplish if we trusted in
Jesus as they did?
Silent Retreat
"Silence is God's Music." Come away for a weekend
Silent Retreat where you can develop your creativity,
work on a project, discern your path, get closer to
God or just rest. The dates are Friday, April 11,
beginning at 9 a.m. through Sunday, April 13, at Noon.
The retreat is at the Pastoral Center and is facilitated by Katie Gordy, who will give three talks on the
role of creativity in our spirituality. Men and women
are welcome. To register or to ask questions, call Katie at 405-627-6954 or email her at [email protected].

FROM THE PASTOR
I know many of you are interested in a report on the
donations to “Sanctuary Improvements,” which I announced as 2013 was coming to a close. Augmenting
the sanctuary is always appropriate because it is the
focal point of what we offer to God. As His creatures
we have a duty to worship God. God is owed the
worship of His creatures. As we give honor and glory
to God through the best material goods of earth we
can offer we express a love for God, which is the first
and the greatest commandment. Provided we do not
stop with giving our best to God, but also give generously to our neighbors in need, then we can say our
augmenting of the sanctuary is pleasing to God and
meets the second great command to love our
neighbor as ourselves. Our parish tithes generously
to the needs of others around us, and so I think it is
safe to say that our parish maintains this double calling
to love God and to love neighbor. Thus we have no
shame in offering beautiful things to God in the sanctuary. I have good news to report about our Sanctuary Improvement Fund. In the last several weeks (at
last count) we raised slightly more than $19,000 for
Sanctuary Improvements. That means we made our
matching goal and through an anonymous parishioner
can add an additional $15,000 to that total. Thus we
have a little more than $34,000 for Sanctuary Improvements. Soon we will be completing the project
of candlesticks to match the new altar crucifix. Our
Lighthouse Catholic Media Highlighted CDs
Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist. Dr Brant
Pitre uses the Hebrew Scriptures and Jewish tradition
to frame the actions of Jesus at the Last Supper, and
to provide a fresh look at the Eucharist. By taking us
back to the Jewish roots of our faith, he gives us a
powerful lens through which to see anew the bread of
the presence, the manna, the Last Supper, and the
meaning of the Eucharist.
Aborting America is a candid account of the conversion of one of the foremost pioneers of the modern
abortion industry. Dr. Bernard Nathanson explains
how he came to recognize the undeniable humanity of
the unborn child and became an outspoken pro-life
leader. This story or his journey to the Catholic Faith
is both dramatic and inspiring.
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
daily Mass altar will also be outfitted in same fashion.
We will also be getting a few additional sanctuary objects such as a new stand for the Missal (our current
one is plastic and is has been broken for months now)
and new processional candles for use by the altar
boys. You may have already noticed a few times our
new thurible (incense). The rest of the money will
remain in savings for future projects. You can always
make a special gift to “Sanctuary Improvements” if
you desire to help us with future projects. I offer sincere thanks from our whole parish to our generous
donors and benefactors!
Next weekend after the conclusion of all Masses we
will offer the annual blessing of candles which you may
bring from home (you’ll want to pack them appropriately for easy transport) as well as the blessing of
throats in honor of St. Blase. Piety and devotion such
as this are an important part of extending our
Church’s liturgical life into your daily routine. Plan to
participate, please!
Sincerely in Christ
Rev. Stephen Hamilton

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
adorar a Dios.
nuestros vecinos necesitados, entonces podemos decir
nuestros generosos donantes y bienhechores!
¡Planee participar,
por favor!
Sinceramente en Cristo, Padre Hamilton

Growing in Faith
Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Week of January 26
Jesus calls us to follow him;
our lives will never be the same
Breaking Open the Word
Programs & Activities to help all of us grow
in our faith. Reflection on the Scripture readings from our
Sunday Mass during the week.
Suggested text for faith sharing:
Today’s Gospel
Step One: Listen to the Word. As you listen to
the story of Jesus calling the first disciples, what one
word or thought strikes you? What image or insight
do you take away from this?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: How do you hear Jesus calling
you to do what he wants you to?
Question for Youth: As you grow into young adulthood, Jesus calls you to follow him in particular ways,
both big and small. What are some of the small ways
in which Jesus calls you to follow him?
Question for Adults: How does Jesus call you to assist
in his ministry; the building up of the Reign of God?
How do you know what God wants of you in this regard?
