Gary D. Wright Elementary School Presents The Gary D. Wright Elementary School Field Day will be held on May 19th with the rain date scheduled for May 23rd. Field day is an opportunity for our students to participate in various games and activities that support cooperation, sportsmanship, and enjoyment. Once again this year, students in each grade level are asked to wear a specific colored t-shirt to easily identify the grade levels. Please see the chart listed below for further details. With Field Day right around the corner, we would like to start planning ahead to consider health and safety. Students will be outside for a majority of the day. Wearing appropriate clothing and shoes, and drinking plenty of water will enhance each child’s safety and enjoyment. Students may bring a water bottle to make sure they are staying hydrated (please label the water bottle with your child’s name). There will be opportunities for students to re-fill bottles and water stations will be available. Depending on the weather, wearing sunscreen should also be considered. We would also like to ask for any volunteers who would like to help run a Field Day game during the morning from 8:30-11:00 or in the afternoon from 10:45-2:00. There will be a total of 24 stations for the students to participate at. If you are interested in helping run a morning or afternoon game, please sign up at https://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/99652514004. We will confirm with all volunteers their time and job. Parents are welcome to join their students for lunch on field day from 10:55-11:20. However, in order to ensure safety, the playground will be closed during that period. If you plan on having lunch with your student we ask that you complete an RSVP form which will go home with students on Monday, May 9th. Schedule by Grade and T-Shirt Color Pre-K Blue (Pre-K Shirt) Kindergarten Red (Kindergarten Face Shirt) 1st Grade White 2nd Grade Green 3rd Grade Red 4th Grade Black 5th Grade Purple (Class T-Shirt) Now is Not Too Early to Begin Scheduling Important Physical and Immunization Appointments for 2016-2017! All students must be up-to-date with physical examination and immunization requirements. All forms must be turned into the School Health Office prior to August 1st to ensure students can begin school on the first day of attendance. Students will not be able to attend school until all required health information is on file. Important Health Requirements for 2016-2017 All students entering Early Childhood, Kindergarten, Sixth and Ninth grades are required to have a current physical examination completed on the approved Illinois Department of Public Heath Form. A sport physical does not meet the requirement. A current physical is one that was completed within one year of August 2016. The parent portion on the upper back side of the form must be completed and signed. All students must be up-to-date with the State of Illinois immunization requirements including the following: All students entering sixth and seventh grade must show proof of receiving one dose of meningococcal vaccine (meningitis). All students entering twelfth grade must show proof of receiving two doses of meningococcal vaccine (meningitis) unless the first dose was given after the age of 16, then only one dose is required. All students entering grades six through twelve must show proof of receiving one dose of Tdap. All students entering kindergarten, first, second, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth and eleventh grades must show proof of receiving two doses of varicella (chickenpox). Immunization dates can be viewed through the Parent Infinite Campus Portal. Physical examination forms are available in all School Health Offices and on the D300 Health Services website. D300 together with Greater Elgin Family Care Center offer physical and immunization clinics onsite at D300 schools throughout the year. Please visit the D300 Health Services website or contact any D300 School Health Office for dates and locations. Wright Elementary School Students, Families, & Friends What: Poetry Open Mic Night! Thanks to the funding provided by GDW’s PTO, Bill Buczinsky--Poet, Performer, Teacher, and Founder of A Child’s Voice will be spending a two-day residency at Gary D. Wright Elementary School. Bill will engage GDW students in poetry performances. Full of music, drama, and feats of whimsy, the performances will introduce students to some of the basic moves of the poetry game. After the opening shows, some of our classes will enjoy a poetry workshop facilitated by Mr. Buczinsky, where students will create poems of their very own. Our young authors will learn to create vivid images, invent effective metaphors, and use lyrical devices that make words come to life. As our culminating event, you are cordially invited to take part in our Poetry Open Mic Night, where students will have the opportunity to perform their poetry in front of a live audience. Admission is free! Where: Gary D. Wright Elementary School Gymnasium When: Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Why: The writing process is not done until you have an audience.
