Reflection……..
•
True faith is not seen as much in outbursts of praise as it is in constant, steady prayer.
•
Stay faithful to God, as He is faithful to you.
•
Prayer must be persistent not reactionary or perfunctory.
•
Being indifferent to those in distress is not love or justice. Indifference is a violation of virtue. Engaging in the daily
struggle is the way of Christ.

MANY THANKS TO OUR “RIBBON INSTALLATION” COMMITTEE:
The ribbon bookmarks have been placed in the Journeysongs books in the pews. Lucy, Irene, Kate,
Ellie, Nicole, Daniella, Lisa, Sam & Grace were our wonderful angels who got the job done in one
afternoon. They were fabulous ~ we surely couldn’t have done it without them! We’ll now be able to
mark 5 different pages in the books & keep track of the readings, the Order of Mass & some favorite
prayers and hymns. Thanks too to all who contributed to the Parish Improvement fund this month so
that we were able to invest in these ribbon-markers. Your assistance and stewardship in taking care of
this new investment is much appreciated.

AÑO DE LA FE
-
20 de octubre, 2013
Domingo Mundial de
las Misiones
Mensaje del Santo Padre
Queridos hermanos y
hermanas:
Este año celebramos la Jornada
Mundial de las Misiones
mientras se clausura el Año de
la fe, ocasión importante para
fortalecer nuestra amistad con
el Señor y nuestro camino
como Iglesia que anuncia el
Evangelio con valentía. En esta
prospectiva, querría plantear
algunas reflexiones.

ARDENT LONGING FOR GOD
October 20, 2013
~ PSALM 63: 2-9
O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.
Thus I have gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory. For your kindness is a greater good than life; my
lips shall glorify you. Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call your name. As with the riches of a banquet shall
my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you. I will remember you upon my couch , and through the nightwatches I will meditate on you. That you are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you;
your right hand upholds me. Amen.
What is prayer?
Do what you can, and pray for
what you cannot, and so God will
grant you the ability to do it.
Georges Bernanos
(1888-1948, French writer)
Prayer is turning the heart toward God. When a person prays,
he enters into a living relationship with God. [CCC 2558-2565]
Prayer is the great gate leading into faith. Someone who prays no
longer lives on his own, for himself, and by his own strength. He
knows there is a God to whom he can talk. People who pray entrust
themselves more and more to God. Even now they seek union with the
Praying does not mean listening
to yourself speak; praying means
calming down and being still and
waiting until you hear God.
SOREN KIERKEGAARD
(1813-1855)
For me, prayer is a surge of the
heart; it is a simple look turned
toward heaven; it is a cry of
recognition and of love,
embracing both trial and joy.
ST. THERESE OF LISIEUX
(1873-1897)
one whom they will encounter one day face to face. Therefore, the
effort to pray daily is part of Christian life. Of course, one cannot learn
to pray in the same way one learns a technique. As strange as it
sounds, prayer is a gift one obtains through prayer.
What prompts a person to pray?
We pray because we are full of an infinite longing and God has
created us men for himself: “Our hearts are restless until they
rest in you” (St. Augustine). But we pray also because we
need to; Mother Teresa says, “Because I cannot rely on myself,
I rely on Him, twenty-four hours a day.
[CCC 2566-2567, 2591]
Often we forget God, run away from Him and hide. Whether we avoid
thinking about God or deny Him - He is always there for us. He seeks
us before we seek Him; He yearns for us, He calls us. You speak with
your conscience and suddenly notice that you are speaking with God.
“They should seek God in the
hope that they might feel after
Him and find Him. Yet He is not
far from each one of us.”
ACTS 17:27
You feel lonely, have no one to talk with, and then sense that God is
always available to talk. You are in danger and experience that a cry
for help is answered by God. Praying is a human as breathing, eating,
and loving. Praying purifies. Praying makes it possible to resist
temptations. Praying removes fear, increases energy, and gives a
second wind. Praying makes one happy.
How are the Psalms important for our prayer?
Suddenly I experience the silence
like a presence. At the heart of
this silence was the One who is
Himself silence, peace and
tranquility.
Georges Bernanos
(1888-1948)

The Psalms, along with the Our Father, are part of the
Church’s great treasury of prayers. In them the praise of God
is sung in an ageless way.
There are 150 Psalms in the OLD TESTAMENT. They are a collection of
songs and prayers, some of them several thousand years old, which
are still prayed today in the Church community - in the so-called
Liturgy of the Hours. The Psalms are among the most beautiful texts in
the world literature and move even modern readers immediately by
their spiritual power.
