F E B R U A R Y 2 2, 2 0 1 4 Vol. 2, Issue 12 The FUN Stuff! Stories from the Office of Advancement at Pacific Northern Academy Vision Courage Integrity Dear Linda, GET READY FOR A 007 AUCTION! The Inimitable PNA Gala Auction of 2014! What in the heck is this Auction I keep hearing about?? Now in its 18th year, the PNA Auction consistently raises $250,000 to $450,000 to help fund PNA's programs (academic, social and financial assistance), and we are certain this year will be no exception! PNA has two fundraisers a year. Our Annual Fund, which concluded last month, is focused on the nuclear PNA community. The Auction, however, is our opportunity to invite the greater Anchorage community to support independent education. Our gala features a formal dinner, cocktails, silent auction, and premier live auction with a professional auctioneer. It is held at the school, which is transformed into a magical setting with the help of dedicated volunteers. A purchased ticket is required to attend. Why Do We Have A Gala? The Annual Auction Gala is critical to the financial health of Pacific Northern Academy. As is true of all independent schools, what it costs to educate a student is greater than what we can charge for tuition. To supplement the operating budget, we fundraise. The willingness of PNA families and friends to jump in and volunteer is absolutely critical to the success of a fundraiser of this magnitude. What to know now: We have informational and promotional materials for everyone! How Do Parents Contribute? The biggest challenge of the auction is procurement: soliciting items to be donated to the auction. We ask each family to donate or procure stand-alone items for both the silent and live auctions. Swing by Laurie's office for a packet of ideas, tips and more! In addition to procuring and donating items, we need volunteers to help us organize, coordinate, and put on this huge event. Read the auction updates, watch the bulletin board and website, and attend monthly auction meetings - whether large or small, your contributions of time and energy are welcome and appreciated! So please come to one of the Auction 101 classes that we will offer next week to see how you can make the most of this great event! Ready to start procuring? Pick up an Auction Tool-Kit package in Laurie's office. Need some tutelage? Go to class! Lisa Maurer, past Auction Chair and Maestra, will conduct 2 AUCTION 101 Classes. Oh, The Places We Go.... Tuesday, Nov. 5th at 2:00pm Thursday, Nov. 7th at 8:30am Besides kicking off our journey to the cool, classy and exotic world of BOND in February, PNA visited many other fascinating locales this week: Journey to the Middle East The 7th/8th grade finished their Middle East studies. To wrap it up, they invited all the parents to a Middle Eastern Feast. It was incredibly delicious and entertaining and informative. 3rd graders are hard at work on their class auction project, scoring and cutting glass. We can't wait to see it! Shaken, Not Stirred: The Live and Let Bid Kick-off Party For more photos, head to the PNA Media Gallery "Middle Eastern Parent Lunch". The quintessential martini. This is just one small example of the variety of food the 7th and 8th graders cooked with their parents for the lunch. Ms. B and Kathy survey the scene approvingly. We often mistake Marty Weiser, PNA Board of Trustees Chair, with James Bond. He certainly has attained 00 status in the trustee world for eliminating obstacles in PNA's way. It wasn't quite Monte Carlo or the Bellagio - but close. Each student had made an illustration of one particularly striking thing they'd learned while researching extensive power-point presentations. After lunch they spoke briefly about it. Here Quinn talks about the 500 camels that belong to a Saudi prince and spend their days doing absolutely nothing. They are the most pampered camels on earth. Middle School Choir Black Jack and 4-5-6 were the games of the evening. Congratulations to Arin Copenhaver for running the tables and going home with the high chip count. And thanks to all the players for not crying tears of blood. Takes you back to 1982. Andrew belts out his solo... Dr. Beal and Sue snatched up the top sponsorship spot and got to take a bottle of Dom Perignon home to celebrate. Sadly, it's not a '53. Want more pictures? Check out Jackie Kramer's album on Facebook. Love What You See? You Can Support It! ...and receives the adulation. Ms Katie is offering to take your Middle School student (5-8th grade) "Out On The Town" to see UAA's production of "Big River" (think the Mississippi and Huck Finn) and/or ATY's "Godspell" - featuring PNA's very own Alex and Hannah Thomas! If your child didn't pass on the hand-out to you, remind them - or check it out here. Support educational excellence in Alaska! Your gift benefits today's students and everyone's future. Spread the word! Don't let PNA be Anchorage's best kept secret. Let your friends know! In the Classroom. Sort Of. Call (907) 333-1080 to pledge your gift or refer a family. Killian and Nevaeh work the flashcards in the stacks of the Media center. LINKS WE LOVE Want a taste of 17th Century London, right before the Great Fire of 1666 (and really, who doesn't?) Check out this video that lets you fly (Harry Potter-esque) through the streets of Pudding Lane. Spanish class headed outside. Spanish sounds better outside. It sure feels better outside. Pudding Lane Productions, Crytek Off The Map Extra Credit: Compare and contrast London as you see it here and the Jamestown Settlement of the same era. We know which one we'd pick to live in.... NOTABLE QUOTES Never Say Never Again Largo: "Do you lose as gracefully as you win?" James Bond: "I don't know, I've never lost." Tomorrow Never Dies Bond: "You were pretty good with that hook." Wai Lin: "Thanks. It comes from growing up in a rough neighborhood. You were pretty good on that bike." Bond: "Thank you. It comes from not growing up at all." Pumpkins Buddies Build it and they will come! In preparation for their field trip to see Little Red Riding Hood, there was a lot of building up and blowing down in EK. 5th graders carve jack-o-lanterns with their EK buddies, working together to clean out the insides (yuck!) map out their design (fun) and carve a cool character! 2nd grade went upstairs to the Common Room to use the Chromebooks. Joss is getting the skinny on mummifying. Dear Community, If you were lucky enough to stop by PNA on Thursday, you were treated with a parade of princesses, pirates, witches, fairies, a traffic cone, trash can, the solar system, a jellyfish, and much more. It was Halloween at PNA: a time to let your imagination run wild. Even the staff joined in the fun. I worked hard on my cheer leading outfit and was quite proud. So you can imagine my dismay, when at the end of the day two, not one but two, students asked me what I was. "What?" I asked. "You really do not know what I am?" And both answered, "No, you look the same as you always do." Really? I do not remember wearing pigtails with bows before but then it dawned on me; my new role at PNA is to be the cheerleader, the one who urges the group onto the next score or goal. So it really doesn't matter if I have my green and gold pompoms (I love these), am dressed in my uniform or not, I am here rooting on the team to victory. So team, it's time to push for our next score, our final fundraiser, the auction. We ALL get to be PNA cheerleaders as we share the amazing effect that our school has on our students with non-PNA families and businesses. Everyone is invited to join our team through donations or attendance at the event. It is the city's chance to support private education and our chance to shout out our team allegiance. So what does the team need you to do to help us reach the end zone? Attend one of the Auction 101 classes next week to learn how your role in the winning play, work on your class project and start gathering donations for the auction. As with most sports, in order to be victorious it usually comes down to teamwork so join PNA's roster to help us achieve our next goal. Go Team! Writing Buddies In the Halloween mood, 6th grade wrote ghost stories and read them to their 1st grade buddies in dark corners and closets. Then they illustrated the stories together. Halloween! The Halloween parade took everyone into orbit, into the gnomey woods...everywhere you can imagine. Head to the PNA Media Gallery for lots of pics. P.S. If you want to borrow my pompoms, come by my office, I'm willing to loan them out. Laurie Laurie Hoefer Director of Development [email protected] ! Just one more...
