First Performance of Messiah: An Irish Disaster Relief Concert The Irish people have been no strangers to disastrous hardship over the centuries. Well-known is the Irish Potato Famine (1845-1852) - more properly referred to as the Great Hunger (an Gorta Mór) – during which more than one million Irish died and nearly two million emigrated to the United States and other countries. One contributing factor to that terrible period in Irish history is often overlooked. In addition to the potato blight and export of needed food commodities which precipitated starvation deaths of 400,000 Irish people in 1847 alone, the harsh climate of the time contributed to the devastating hardships. From 1300 to 1870 – peaking between 1600 and 1800 – the northern hemisphere was subjected to much a colder climate than experienced in the 20th and 21st centuries. Known as the Little Ice Age, snow fell in July and people froze to death in September. The growing season was extremely short; food of any kind was scarce. Though the cause of the Little Ice Age is not known with certainty, it is thought that a period of low solar activity – known as a Maunder Minimum – was a contributing factor. Only 105 years before the Great Hunger, the Great Irish Frost of 1739 began two terrible years of famine and freezing hardship which brought the Irish population to its knees. Between 310,000 and 480,000 people – 13-20% of the population, one of every five people – died in the terrible cold, food riots, famine, and disease epidemics. Shortly after Christmas 1739, the cold became so intense the seas around Ireland froze. Shipping stopped; supplies of coal could not reach the island. Hedges, trees, and nurseries around Dublin were stripped bare by desperate people looking for fuel. Deep cold destroyed the potato crop the following spring. Cold followed by drought killed the livestock. In Cork, there were riots aimed at food wholesalers planning to ship their wares to markets outside Ireland. In October 1740, blizzards ravaged the east coast of Ireland followed by widespread flooding in December which led to more freezing. Miniature icebergs floated down the River Liffey through the middle of Dublin. Recovery began during the summer of 1741. In November 1741, William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland – essentially serving as Viceroy - along with the Charitable Music Society invited George Frederik Handel to present a series of six concerts, November 1741 through February 1742, to raise funds for relief of the stricken and impoverished. After the success of these concerts, a second series was quickly organized which included the first performance of Messiah on April 13, 1742. With all performers donating their services, the first Messiah performance in Neal’s New Musick Hall on Fishamble Street benefitted three charities: Society for Relieving Prisoners, Mercer’s Hospital, and the Charitable Infirmary. The hall had a capacity of only 600 persons; 700+ were in attendance. Ticket prices were ½ Guinea, about $95.50 in today’s currency, which seems reasonable by today’s standards for a charity benefit performance given by a musical star like Handel. The performance grossed approximately £400 - $66,887 in modern currency providing £127 to each of the charities ($21,236.65 modern USD), and securing the release of 142 indebted prisoners. MESSIAH George Frideric Handel Once the performance begins, please hold applause until intermission and end of the performance. Thank you! ¡Gracias!
