Cuando apareció en 1934 el De Havilland D.H.89 Dragon Rapide, las
líneas aéreas pudieron disponer de un avión de transporte de pasajeros
veloz y cómodo que incorporaba un elegante diseño de líneas art déco.
Aunque su clásico diseño biplano de construcción básicamente en madera
con revestimiento de tela y alguna pieza en metal, cuando la época del
monomotor metálico era ya inminente, poco hacía presagiar un éxito
prolongado, lo cierto es que este modelo batió récords de longevidad,
ya que incluso hoy en día varios ejemplares siguen volando en distintos
países. Era un desarrollo del D.H. 84 Dragon de seis pasajeros, que
incorporaba el nuevo motor Gipsy Six de 200 caballos y su configuración
normal era de ocho asientos más el piloto. En 1937 apareció el D.H. 89
A, con flaps, luz de aterrizaje en el morro y otras mejoras. Se fabricaron
en total, entre 1934 y 1945, 728 Dragon Rapide, incluidos 475 Dominie
militares, utilizados para el entrenamiento de operadores de radio y
navegantes. Muchos de estos pasaron en la posguerra a la aviación
comercial, tanto en Gran Bretaña como en otros países, y en la actualidad
hay catorce ejemplares en estado de vuelo en Alemania, Australia, Estados
Unidos, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Nueva Zelanda y Sudáfrica.
El primer Dragon Rapide español fue el décimo tercero fabricado en la
De Havilland de Hatfield, adquirido en noviembre de 1934 por Líneas
Aéreas Postales Españolas, predecesora de Iberia, para la línea BarcelonaValencia-Palma de Mallorca y que recibió la matrícula EC-AZZ. Este
avión siguió prestando servicio de transporte durante la Guerra Civil en
la zona republicana, sobreviviendo a la guerra. En diciembre de 1935 la
Aviación Militar adquiere tres unidades de la versión militar D.H.89 M,
dotadas de tres ametralladoras Vickers, una de ellas de tiro frontal, y una
pequeña carga de bombas, para reemplazar a los viejos Fokker coloniales
en Marruecos, aunque en julio de 1936 estaban basados en Getafe, al sur
de Madrid. De éstos, uno combatió en la zona nacional y los otros dos en
When the De Havilland D.H. 89 Dragon Rapide first appeared in 1934,
commercial airlines could appreciate that this was an aeroplane which
offered speed and comfort within an elegant art déco design. Although
a traditionally constructed biplane in wood covered in fabric, with some
metal components, this was the time when the all-metal monoplanes
were about to become the norm. Therefore the omens for long-term
success would not have been obvious. The fact is that this model became
a great success in service; even now some of these aircraft are still
flying in several countries. The Model D.H. 89 was developed from
the six-passenger D.H. 84 Dragon, powered by two of the new 200
HP Gipsy Six engines, with the single pilot crew and normally fitted
out to carry eight passengers. Then in 1937 the updated D.H. 89 A
was introduced, now fitted with flaps and a nose landing light amongst
other improvements. Between 1934 and 1945 a total of 728 Dragon
Rapides were produced, including 475 military (Royal Air Force)
designated Dominies used for training wireless-operators and
navigators. Many of these were used after the war by commercial
operators, not only in the United Kingdom but also abroad.
The first Dragon Rapide in Spanish use was the 13th off the Hatfield
production line, bought by Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas,
predecessor of Iberia, for the route Barcelona-Valencia-Palma de
Mallorca and registered EC-AZZ. This aeroplane went on flying during
the Spanish Civil War with the Republicans, and eventually survived the
war. In December of 1935 the Spanish Aviación Militar purchased three
D.H.89 Ms, the military Rapide which was armed with three Vickers
machine guns, one of which was forward firing and able to carry a

la republicana, siendo utilizados como bombardero ligero e incluso como
avión de caza y reconocimiento. Además, los nacionales consiguieron
otros cuatro ejemplares, y los republicanos pudieron comprar por diversas
vías doce dragones, como eran denominados normalmente, que fueron
utilizados como transportes y en la Escuela de Polimotores de Totana, en
Murcia. Al final de la guerra muchos de ellos fueron utilizados para la
evacuación a Francia de personal y autoridades republicanas.
Terminada la guerra se recuperan once, que continúan volando en el
Ejército del Aire con el código 40 de transporte. Cinco pasaron a la
compañía Iberia, de los cuales dos prestaron servicio en Guinea Ecuatorial.
Durante ocho meses del año 1943, debido a la interrupción en el suministro
de gasolina de aviación, el Dragon Rapide se convirtó en el único modelo
de la flota de Iberia que continuó en servicio gracias a que podía utilizar
gasolina normal de automóvil. En los años cincuenta otros dos Rapide
fueron comprados por particulares, y con éstos, el total de D.H. 89
utilizados en España asciende a 22.
Pero sin duda el Dragon Rapide con el papel más relevante en España
fue el que trasladó al general Franco desde Canarias hasta Tetuán en
julio de 1936 para ponerse al frente del alzamiento militar que dio origen
a la Guerra Civil Española, el G-ACYR fletado por Bolín a la Olley
Air Service. Cuando dejó de volar en 1953, fue regalado a Franco y
actualmente se exhibe en el Museo del Aire de Cuatro Vientos.
El 40-2 fue uno de los cuatro Dragon Rapide comprados en Inglaterra por los nacionales en agosto
de 1936, que junto con uno de los tres D.H. 89 M capturado en Zaragoza en los primeros
días de la guerra, estuvieron integrados en el Grupo Dragón-Fokker. Fue bautizado
"Capitán Vela" en honor a un aviador muerto cuando su Dragon Rapide fue derribado
por error por cazas alemanes de la Legión Cóndor
Dragon Rapide 40-2 was one of four imported from Great Britain by the Nationalists in August 1936,
which, along with one of the three D .H. 89 Ms which was captured in the first days of the war
in Saragossa, was integrated in the “Grupo Dragón-Fokker”. It was named Capitán Vela in memory
of a Nationalist officer killed when his Dragon Rapide was shot down in error
by German fighters of the Condor Legion

Fokkers in service in Spanish Morocco, although in July of 1936 they
were based in Getafe, just South of Madrid.

and the other with the Republican
forces, being used as light
bombers, reconnaissance
and even as a fighter.
Besides these, four more
were obtained by the
Nationalists, the Republicans
on the other hand were able to procure,
through various channels, another twelve
dragones, as they were simply called, which served
as transports and airliners, as well as in the Escuela
de Polimotores (multi-engined flying school) in Totana,
in the province of Murcia. Eventually, many were used to evacuate
Republican personnel to France at the end of the war. When the Civil
War finished eleven were recovered and employed by the Ejército del
Aire with the transport code 40. Five of these were then transferred to the
Iberia company, of which two were used in Equatorial Guinea. During
eight months in 1943, the Dragon Rapide became the only type in the
Iberia fleet to be able to fly, due to the fuel shortage caused by the war,
because the Rapide could use motor car fuel which was all that was
available at the time. During the 1950s two more D.H. 89s were bought
by Spanish private owners. Including these last two, the number of
Dragon Rapides used in Spain was 22.
But certainly the most important in historical terms of all the Rapides
used in Spain was G-ACYR, chartered by Bolín from Olley Air Service
for transporting General Franco from the Canaries to Tetuán in Spanish
Morocco, to take command of the military coup which started the
Spanish Civil War. When it was withdrawn from use in 1953 it was
presented to Franco and it is currently displayed in the Museo
del Aire of Cuatro Vientos.

El Museo del Aire
Es un organismo del Servicio Histórico y Cultural del Ejército del Aire
(SHYCEA) creado con la finalidad de custodiar y conservar los bienes
que constituyen el patrimonio histórico de la aeronáutica española,
exponiéndolos públicamente para general conocimiento y exaltación de
las más relevantes gestas aeronáuticas.
Aunque el proyecto inicial proviene de la inmediata posguerra tendrían
que pasar cuatro décadas para que se abriera al público, el 24 de mayo
de 1981, en el apropiado marco del histórico aeródromo de Cuatro
Vientos, el primero en ser creado en España, en el año 1911.
El crecimiento en sus instalaciones ha sido constante y ello se ha
reflejado en la construcción de nuevos hangares para complementar el
primero con el que se contó, crecimiento que ha marchado en paralelo
a la incorporación de nuevas aeronaves que se han ido añadiendo a la
colección expuesta, algunas de ellas reconstrucciones o réplicas al no
poder encontrarse ya el modelo original.
Actualmente la colección consta de más de 125 aeronaves y de multitud
de objetos y uniformes aeronáuticos, contándose con piezas únicas
como el Breguet XIX tipo Grand Raid Jesús del Gran Poder, un autogiro
La Cierva C19, un Heinkel 111 E único en el mundo y el De Havilland
Dragon Rapide que trasladó al general Franco de Las Palmas a Tetuán
para ponerse al frente del ejército nacional al inicio de la Guerra Civil, así
como diversos aviones producidos por la industria aeronáutica española
como la Hispano Aviación, CASA y Aeronáutica Industrial.
The Air Museum
The Air Museum is part of the Air Force Historical and Cultural Service,
created to acquire and preserve the Spanish Aeronautical heritage. This
is displayed to the public for the general knowledge and recognition of
the most important aeronautical feats.
Although the original project dates back to the years immediately
after the Spanish Civil War, four decades would pass until the Museum
opened on 24th May 1981. It is appropriately situated in the historical
airfield of Cuatro Vientos, the first to be opened in Spain in 1911.
The growth of the installations has been continuous and this has
resulted in the erection of additional hangars. In parallel new aircraft
have been added to the collection, some of these being restorations
and replicas as the originals no longer exist.
The current collection has more than 125 aircraft and numerous
aeronautical artefacts and uniforms, including such unique pieces
as the Breguet XIX Grand Raid Jesús del Gran Poder, a Cierva C19
autogyro, the sole-surviving Heinkel 111 in the world and the De
Havilland Dragon Rapide which carried General Franco from Las Palmas
to Tetuan to take charge of the Nationalist forces in the beginning
of the Civil War. There is also a collection of aeroplanes built by the
Spanish aeronautical companies, as Hispano Aviación, CASA and
Aeronáutica Industrial.
