90 Days of Grace:
40 days of Lent / 50 days of Easter
From the Ashes of Lent
to the Fire of a New Pentecost
Friday evening and Saturday a week ago, I was walking
through the parish grounds and buildings during the Parish
Festival. It was so beautiful to see so many smiling faces,
and so many of our volunteers working to bring those
smiles to the faces of our parishioners and visitors. It was
truly wonderful to see so many people enjoying each other’s
company. Although there had been a threat of rain and the
temperatures were somewhat cooler than we expected, it
made the smells coming from the outside food tents and
grilles even more enjoyable. The International foods, from
American hamburgers and hot dogs, to Hispanic specialties
and Filipino delights, wafted through the air. From the game
booths, to the bakery, to the White Elephant sale, Book Fair,
Story Time, and Cake Walk, smiles were abundant. Thank
you to all who made our Parish Festival and 5-Car Raffle
a great success! A special thank you to Matt Lewandowski,
chair of the Festival and to our 5-Car Raffle co-chairs:
Veronica Rollins, Bill Anderson, and Norm Desmarais. To
the various committees which assisted, and to our parish
office and facilities staff, “Thank you!”
Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord into heaven.
While Luke’s gospel and the Acts of the Apostles (both
authored by Luke) tell of the end of the 40 days of the
Resurrected Jesus to the disciples, the faith dimension of this
feast is about the exaltation of Jesus in heaven, present now
in his glorified body, with God the Father. The movements
of the Paschal Mystery are the suffering, death, resurrection,
exaltation of Christ, and the sending of the Holy Spirit. When
we say that Christ is exalted in glory, we use the phrase “at
the right hand of the Father.” The one sitting at the right hand
of the king was one who was favored in a special way. Jesus,
because he is divine and one with the Father and the Holy
Spirit, is now with the Father in his glorified body. Jesus,
in his divinity, is always with the Father; yet now, in his
glorified humanity, he is exalted in heaven in a new way.
Jesus’ humanity has become a vessel for the outpouring of
the Spirit. Now that Jesus returns to the Father, he can give
the Holy Spirit to his followers. This is a part of the mystery
of God’s plan. Jesus’ obedience to God the Father’s will
reveals itself as the path to glory.
In ancient times, to sit at one’s right hand was a place of
honor. This exaltation establishes Jesus as the Kyrios (Greek
for the Lord). In the Old Testament, only God (the Father) was
referred to as Lord. Now, by his Resurrection and Ascension
into heaven, Jesus is called Lord. Because he is exalted in
heaven in his glorified humanity, Jesus is now capable of
May 8, 2016
sending the Spirit. In his divinity, Jesus was always capable
of this, but it is through his glorified humanity that the
Resurrection and Ascension bring about this sending of the
Holy Spirit into creation.
The Ascension is the investiture of Christ as universal Lord
and King. It is the glorification of Christ. The Ascension
terminates Jesus’ earthly mission and is the prelude to the
giving of the Spirit.
The meaning of the Ascension is that Jesus, in his humanity,
is divinized and able to pour out his Spirit on us — to make
us one with him. By his outpouring of the Holy Spirit, his
new life can now be offered to us.
On this Mother’s Day we recall our own mothers who have
given us life. Let us be grateful for mothers, grandmothers,
and godmothers and how they have nurtured us into the
person we are. We pray with gratitude for expectant mothers
and for all mothers, living and deceased. May our thanks
be combined with kindness towards others, as mothers
teach their children. Congratulations to those graduating
from college and other institutions of higher learning. Your
education is a gift from God, your parents, and hard work on
your part. Use that education to become the man or woman
God created you to be: a person for others.

C hanges for 2016-2017
For this coming year, the Religious Education (RE)
office has established a two-year sacramental preparation
program. This means that children and teens who are
receiving a sacrament will need to be enrolled in Religious
Education class during their sacrament year and the
preceding year. For example, a child who would receive
First Communion in second grade in 2017-2018, would
need to be enrolled in first grade for 2016-2017. This
program will include the First Communion, Confirmation,
and Christian Initiation sacrament preparation programs.
Alan Thomas +
•
Children who did not complete religious education
classes for 1st grade or 7th grade will need to
complete a transitional packet before they begin
classes in September, 2016. The packet will ensure
that children have the adequate preparation they need
as they approach their sacrament year. These packets
will be available in the RE Office and online at
w w w . a lls a i n t s r e l i g i o u s e d u c at i o n . o r g by May
31, 2016.
•
Please note: If a child is scheduled to receive a
sacrament in 2017-2018, they need to be enrolled into
an RE class in 2016-2017 for their preparation year.
More information about RE class sessions is available by
calling the RE Office or on the RE Office website (see
above).

On October 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to
three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal. On the 13th day
of each month, from May to October, Our Lady appeared to
the children. At the final apparition on October 13th, there
was the Miracle of the Sun before a crowd of about 70,000
people. The Church has deemed this apparition worthy of
belief. Our Lady had asked that we pray for the conversion
of sinners.
The 4th Degree Knights of Columbus is having an Authentic
Pit-Cooked North Carolina Style BBQ Dinner on Sat., May
21. That means Smoked Pork, cooked low and slow for 12‑15

sold separately. Dinners will be
served at the Knights of Columbus
Hall from 5:00–8:00 pm. All are

charitable projects. In order to plan
food amounts, RSVP by Thurs., May 12 (this week!) by email

All sizes of baby diapers will be accepted; however, the
greatest need is for newborn to size 2. Cash donations

Divine Spirit, renew your wonders in our time,
as though for a new Pentecost,
and grant that the holy Church,
preserving unanimous and continuous prayer,
together with Mary the Mother of Jesus,
and also under the guidance of St. Peter,
may increase the reign of the Divine Savior,
the reign of truth and justice,
the reign of love and peace. Amen.

2016-2017. Este programa estará vigente para la primera
comunión, confirmación, y los programas de Iniciación
Cristiana.
