SAGE ADVICE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I wish I had some sage (showing wisdom) advice to share, but
instead, let me attempt to explain a little about the new Student
Achievement of Growth and Excellent (SAGE) test. In the
spring of last year, if your child was in 3rd through 11th grade
they most likely took one or more of the SAGE tests; either in
math, language arts, or science. SAGE tests replaced the old
CRT tests and created a much higher expectation for our
students. The test aligns with the new Common Core and
reflects what students should know before finishing a grade
level, and more importantly predicts if they are on track to
graduate from high school prepared to pursue college or a
career. The new test was very different for students in that it
was an unfamiliar computer adaptive format with half the test
asking students to reason through problems without giving
them multiple choice answers as the CRT did.
The bottom line is that we should all welcome higher
expectations for our students – where the SAGE test gives us a
better predictive measurement of whether or not our students
are prepared to enter a post high school career path or college.
The fear is that we perceive our students less capable because
of their test results. Instead, we should accept this as a great
opportunity to use the SAGE test as a baseline assessment so
we are able to measure our students GROWTH from year to
year.
The mindset at East High School is that we take every student
and assess where they are, and with a “whatever it takes”
approach - get them to grow academically more than expected.
When we take this approach and examine our results – East is
hard to beat. The SAGE results will be shared with students and
parents during their CCR (new SEOP) conferences. If you want
a copy of your student’s results prior to this – just make a
request at the main office and we will print a copy for you.
Finally, know that your students are being instructed in all
curricular areas by the finest staff Utah has to offer! We are not
bothered in the least that the bar has been raised – instead we
are excited by the challenge and are investing considerable
amounts of money on new curriculum that aligns to the new
Common Core and professional development that is preparing
our teachers to be even more effective in delivering the
Common Core content and helping assure your student’s
growth.

SENIOR GRADUATION INFO
On Monday, November 10 at 8:15am there will be a Mandatory
Senior Graduation Meeting for all Seniors planning on graduating
from East this year. At the meeting seniors will be informed
about graduation, fitted for their cap and gown and verify their
Diploma.
Then on Wednesday November 12, Jostens’s will be in the Main
Hall by the Leopard to help students order their Cap and Gown
and diploma as well as graduation announcements, class rings,
tassels, etc. Students are to bring their $60.00 deposit and order
form on Wednesday November 12 to the Josten’s table.

The next ACT exam will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014.
You can register now through Fri., Nov. 7, 2014. Register
online at www.actstudent.org. On the day of the exam, bring
your admissions paper, picture ID, pencils, and approved
calculator. No cell phones or pagers are allowed. See

CCR’S (Career & College Ready)
We will begin Junior CCR’s during the month of November.
During this meeting, counselors will discuss with each junior
educational and career goals, graduation requirements, posthigh school plans, and classes for their senior year. Each junior
should have received a registration card and course catalog in
their Language Arts class. These tentative course selections
will be reviewed and finalized in this meeting. Attendance is
extremely important. An appointment will be scheduled with
your counselor on your behalf.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
As we head into the peak time for applying for college
admissions/scholarships, please make note of the following
requirements:
1. Transcripts need to be requested from Carolyn Smith in the
Counseling Center. The cost is $1.00 per transcript.
Requests for transcripts MUST be made at least ONE
WEEK prior to the due date of the application/scholarship.
Any transcripts needed by Jan. 1, 2015, MUST be requested
by DEC. 12 at the latest.
2. Teachers, counselors, administrators require at least TWO
WEEKS to write a letter of recommendation, so plan
carefully.
3. Students using the on-line Common Application MUST let
recommenders know the DUE DATE for the
recommendation. The on-line form does not share that
information.
Due to the extremely large number of requests we receive for
transcripts and recommendations, it may not be possible for us
to meet your deadline if you do not follow these guidelines.

Seniors: College Application Week is November 12-13. Come
fill out college applications with college representatives on
Wed., Nov. 12 and Thurs., Nov. 13. It will be held all day in
the Computer Lab, B-floor. Come during lunch or during a free
period.

Parents and
Starting last spring, the State Board of Education required all
Utah students, beginning in the third grade, to take new state
tests. The tests, called SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth
and Excellence), were designed to measure more challenging
state standards in mathematics, English language arts, and
science. They are completely different from former statewide
tests. Therefore, SAGE and CRT results cannot be
compared.
We expect the Utah State Office of Education to release the
SAGE results in the next few days, and preliminary reports
show the test scores will be lower than in years past. Please
keep in mind:
• SAGE testing is a completely new platform with a
dramatic increase in rigor and expectations for students.
• Although SAGE scores are anticipated to be lower, we
want you to know schools and teachers are working
diligently to prepare students to meet the new rigorous
requirements.
• Salt Lake City School District schools and teachers are
making plans to share individual student results with
parents and help them understand the new tests and
reports.
• Teachers will be sharing individual student reports with
parents sometime during the next few weeks.

East High School's Theatre Department would like to
announce the upcoming production of West Side
Story, an award-winning adaptation of the classic
romantic tragedy "Romeo and Juliet". Performances
will be held on November 13, 14, 15, and 17 in the

DEBATE TEAM
This year’s Debate team is a wonderful group of young
people and though we are not large in numbers. We are
doing well. In the past 3 weeks several of the students have
received awards for the following competitions.

Olsen made it to Octi-finals in Lincoln Douglas
• Beehive Bonanza @ U of U – Keegan Dohm made it to

Let me just say that it is such an honor to work with these
youth, and though it is very tiring, I count myself lucky to
host the debate team.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT NEWS
In the past month and half student government has been in the
process of planning and completing a variety of projects and
activities. Student Government and Student Senate have teamed
up and collaborated together to create a program called Mix It
Up at Lunch Day, a day devoted to embrace the cultural
diversity offered at East High. This program will include ideas
such as converse to be diverse and make some new friends at
both lunches. Along with mix it up at lunch day student
government has planned the Masquerade Dance on November
1st in the East High commons. We know that Masquerade will
be a hit and include a large amount of the student body’s
participation and attendance in an assortment costume ranging
from Rock Stars to Zombies. Student Governments ideas are
always becoming greater so look forward to the upcoming
events sponsored by the Student Government this year.
Did you know alcohol is the #1 substance abused by Utah’s
youth? It’s true, and many parents are also surprised to hear
some kids are drinking as early as grade school. Raising
children is challenging, yet it can be so rewarding! Consider
the following three-step recipe to help keep kids alcohol-free:
1. Bonding – can be as simple as going out and having fun
together, helping with homework, talking about school,
and making time each day to listen to your child’s
concerns.
2. Boundaries - Children say parental disapproval of
underage drinking is the number one reason they choose
not to drink. Parents, it’s important to set and
communicate clear no underage drinking rules.
3. Monitoring – At some level, most kids appreciate
parental monitoring. It’s very real proof their parents
love them enough to care about their well-being.

Parental involvement drops in half between the 6 and 12
grades. Although this is a normal and healthy part of growing
up, it’s also a critical time to remain involved in their lives.
ParentsEmpowered.org is Utah’s “go to” underage drinking
prevention resource, offering education materials and helpful
parenting tools to help keep our children alcohol-free. Please

AVID AT EAST!
East High School is now in the process of working towards
becoming a National AVID Demonstration School. Over the
past 8 years, AVID has graduated 74 first generation, college
bound students, who have earned close to $800,000 in
scholarships and grants. We are currently recruiting AVID
students for a new section that will begin second semester
(January, 2015). If your student is first generation and serious
about going to college, willing to work hard, make sacrifices to
achieve their college goals and motivated to succeed - AVID is
for them. AVID works for students who are willing to work.
Our ACT scores are higher, our graduation rate is 100% and
our average cumulative GPA is 3.1. In AVID, students learn
how to critically think, ask questions, write, and improve their
reading comprehension. Students also explore careers, college
degrees, write for scholarships, learn about internships, meet
guest speakers, visit college campuses and contribute to society
by offering community service. AVID students are achievers!

Chipotle on Tuesday, November 4th, from 6:00pm to 9:00am.
Bring in this flyer, show it on your smartphone or tell the
cashier you're supporting the cause to make sure that 50% of
the proceeds will be donated to East High Swim Team.
LITTLE LEOPARD PRESCHOOL
The Little Leopard Preschool at East High School has openings
available for the 2014-15 school year. Our preschool program
runs three days a week; Mondays (Late Start Days) from 10:45
a.m. to 12:35 and Wednesday, and Friday from 9:35 a.m. to
12:10 p.m. The cost for tuition is $110.00 a month. The
preschool begins in mid-October and runs to the end of May.
Children must be four or five years old to be enrolled. The
Little Leopard Preschool is a lab preschool; the high school
students work with the children under adult supervision. We
follow developmentally appropriate practice and offer a variety
of activities to teach academics as well as social skills. If you

EAST WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Here are a few reasons why East girls should consider joining
the lacrosse team: 1. It is a lot of fun and a way to stay in
shape; 2. Playing a high school sport provides opportunities to
develop life skills including teamwork and leadership; 3. Girls
who play high school sports have a better chance of getting
into the college of their choice; and 4. There are college
scholarships for women playing lacrosse and many times those
scholarships go unused. If you are interested, contact Emma

EAST CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING
The East cross-country mountain bike team just rolled
across the finish line to complete their third race season!
During the 2014 season the Leopards competed against 51
other high school teams, from all around Utah. There
were 668 high school and 180 middle school student
athletes, racing their mountain bikes in a cross-country
style format. The 2014 season was comprised of 5 races
throughout the state of Utah between September 6th and
October 25th. Nine students who started practicing in early
July with their first race in early September represented the
East mountain bike team. The majority of the races are
local to Salt Lake City with the state championships being
hosted in St. George UT. Everyone is invited to race the
state championship race with the final awards banquet
hosted that evening. The East team is comprised of bikers
of all abilities and is open to boys and girls grades 9-12.
Loaner mountain bikes and safety equipment are available
for those new to the sport that want to come check us out.

THE KEYS TO SUCCESS PROGRAM
The Keys to Success program is once again at East High
School. Our students have the chance to qualify for a KeyCard
that entitles them to incentive awards from several sponsors.
Qualifications for receiving a KeyCard at East involve:

A Key Card is actually a gift certificate of sorts. The recipient
of a Key Card can access a website (see Prizes) and choose
from a myriad of tickets or vouchers for participation in any
number of events. Teachers, Administration and Counselors
can nominate recipients throughout the school year. The best
part of the program happens at the end of the school year. This
is where the Free Car comes in! During the last two months of
school, the school administration, teachers and counselors may
assemble and select 50 students from the pool of Key Card
recipients at East. These selected students will then randomly
compete for a chance to win a car (valued at $4,000 to $5,000)
at a Keys to Success year-end assembly.

hats or head coverings, bandanas,
midriff, mini-skirts, short shorts,
tank tops, spaghetti straps, halters,
chains, spikes, items depicting
vulgarity, harassment, suggestive or obscene slogans,
violence, weapons, illegal or criminal activity, gang related
items, or the promotion of alcohol, tobacco and illegal
substances. Students have been given the Dress Code
approved by the SCC and copies are available in the main
office. Please call the school and speak to an administrator
if you have any questions.

A medida que avanzamos hacia el pico para solicitar admisión
a la universidad y becas, por favor tome nota de los siguientes
requisitos:

Salt Lake City School District:
Desde la pasada primavera, el Consejo de Educación del Estado
Utah exige que todos los estudiantes, a partir del tercer grado,
para adoptar nuevas pruebas estatales. Las pruebas, llamado
SAGE (Evaluación de los resultados de los estudiantes del
crecimiento y la Excelencia), fueron diseñadas para medir las
normas estatales más difíciles en el campo de las matemáticas,
artes del lenguaje en inglés, y la ciencia. Son completamente
diferentes de las antiguas pruebas a nivel estatal. Por lo tanto, el

Esperamos que el Estado de UtahOficina de Educación se
prepara para dejar saber los resultados de SAGE en los
próximos días, y los informes preliminares muestran los

POCO LEOPARD PREESCOLAR
Preescolar El Pequeño leopardo en East High School tiene
aberturas disponibles para el 2014-15 año escolar. Nuestro
programa preescolar funciona tres días a la semana; Lunes
(inicio tardío días) a partir de 10:45 a 12:35 y Miércoles y
Viernes de 9:35 a 00:10 el costo de la matrícula es de $110,00
por mes. El infante comienza a mediados de octubre y se
extiende hasta finales de mayo. Los niños deben ser de cuatro o

NOTICIAS GOBIERNO ESTUDIANTIL
En el pasado mes y medio gobierno estudiantil ha estado en el
proceso de planificación y realización de una gran variedad de
proyectos y actividades. Gobierno Estudiantil y estudiante
Senado ha colaborado y ha colaborado para crear un programa
llamado mezclar a la hora de la comida, un día dedicado a la
diversidad cultural en East High. Este programa se incluyen
ideas como converse a ser diversa y hacer nuevos amigos en
ambos almuerzos. Junto con vamos a mezclarlo en el almuerzo
día gobierno estudiantil ha previsto la mascarada baile que se
celebró el 1 noviembre en el Este de los comunes. Masquerade
será un éxito y se incluye una gran cantidad del cuerpo

vestuario que van de estrellas del Rock de Los Zombies.
Gobiernos Estudiantiles las ideas son siempre cada vez mayor,

en East High School. Nuestros estudiantes tienen la

UNA tarjeta Clave es en realidad una especie de certificado de
regalo. El destinatario de una tarjeta-llave puede acceder a un
sitio web (ver premios) y elegir entre una gran variedad de
billetes o vales para la participación en cualquier número de
eventos. Los maestros, la administración y los Consejeros
pueden designar beneficiarios durante todo el año escolar. La
mejor parte del programa ocurre al final del año escolar. Este es

AVID EN LA ESCUELA DE EAST
East High School está ahora en el proceso de trabajo para que
se convierta en un AVID Demostración Nacional Escuela.
Durante los últimos 8 años, AVID ha graduado 74 primera
generación, los estudiantes universitarios, que se han ganado
cerca de 800.000 dólares en becas y subvenciones. Actualmente
estamos contratando estudiantes ávidos de una nueva sección
que comenzará segundo semestre (2015 Enero ). Si el
estudiante es de primera generación y serios sobre ir a la
