Father Paul’s Corner
Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary
A wise spiritual director once said that you connect humility to holiness by a sense of humor. With this in
mind—enjoy!
1. A man walked up to a Franciscan and Jesuit and asked, "How many novenas must you say to get a
Mercedes Benz?" The Franciscan asked, "What's a Mercedes Benz?" The Jesuit asked, "What's a novena?"
2. A rabbi, a priest and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says, "What is this, a joke?"
3. A farmer named Muldoon lived alone in the countryside with a small dog that he loved and doted on.
After many long years of faithful companionship, the
dog finally died, so Muldoon went to the parish priest:
"Father, my dear old dog is dead. Could you be saying a
Mass for him?" Father Patrick replied, "I am so very
sorry to hear about your dog's death. But, unfortunately,
I can't say Mass for the poor creature..." Muldoon said,
"I understand, Father, I do. But what a shame, I have a
check all written out here for a $500.00 donation." Father Patrick: "Why didn't you tell me your dog was
Catholic?!"
4. Lost on a rainy Friday night, a priest stumbles into a
monastery and requests shelter there. Fortunately, he's
just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish
and chips he's ever had. After dinner, he goes into the
kitchen to thank the chefs. He is met by two brothers,
"Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis." "I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to
thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips
were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who
cooked what?" Brother Michael replied, "Well, I'm the
fish friar." Father turns to the other brother and says,
"Then you must be...." "Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip
monk..."
5. The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table
was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and
posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other
end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God
is watching the apples.
6. A man walks into a monastery and says “I want to be
monk.” The abbot replies “Great! But you realize we are
not allowed to talk except every ten years.” The man replies “Fine.” Ten years go by and the man goes into the
abbot’s office. The abbot asks, “Well my son what have
you to say. The man replies “Bed’s hard.” The abbot remarks, “Is that it?” The man says, “Yes”. Another ten
years go by and the man goes into the abbot’s office and
says, “Food stinks!” The abbot asks, “Is that it?” And the
man says “Yes.” Another ten years goes by and the man
goes into the abbot’s office and says “Water’s cold. I
quit!” And the abbot replies, “Figures! You’ve been complaining ever since you got here!"
7. A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Trappist monk were marooned on a desert island. They found a magic lamp, and
after some discussion decided to rub it. Lo and behold, a
genie appeared and offered them three wishes. They decided it was only fair that they could each have one wish.
The Jesuit said he wanted to teach at the world's most
famous university, and poof, he was gone! The Dominican wished to preach in the world's largest church, and
poof, he was gone! Then the Trappist said, "Gee, I already got my wish!"
8. A little boy was listening to a long and excessively long
sermon in church (not St. Margaret Mary’s!) Suddenly
his eye the red sanctuary lamp caught his eye. Tugging
his father's sleeve, he said, "Daddy, when the light turns
green can we go?

500.00 ". Padre Patrick: "¿Por qué no me dijiste que
su perro era católico?”
que he probado nunca.

FAITH SHARING MEETING
Thursday, February 19th
7-9 PM
SMM Parish Center
Our Lenten journey can be a time of growth in discipleship and knowledge of God. Jesus’ forty days in the desert was a time of intense focus
on His relationship with God. We can follow His lead, stripping away
distractions and making ourselves more available to the Father in
prayer. This Lenten season, take a moment! Pray for help in discerning
what it is that God wants you to focus on. Then put a plan in action to
achieve that focus by ministering to others, giving generously of your
time and talent, studying the Word to be more like Jesus, leading others to Christ, volunteering in church activities, taking on one of the Liturgical ministries…Heaven is the limit!
What will you make of this Lenten season? Will you truly experience it,
or just pass through?
Share your thoughts and hear what others have to say at our next Small
Christian Communities Faith Sharing. We’ll reflect upon the readings
for the First Sunday of Lent:
Genesis 9:8-15 1 Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:12-15
To confirm your attendance and for the meeting location,

OUR FAITH IN ACTION
MAKING THIS A HOLY LENT
The Holy Season of Lent begins this coming Wednesday.
When we think of Lent, we often think of deprivation and ‘giving up’,
but it is also a time to reflect and renew. This year you may wish to
make a change that will transform you spiritually. You may decide to
participate more fully in Sunday liturgy by reciting the communal
prayers and joining your voices in song. You may decide to attend
daily Mass, make time in your day to be with God in quiet prayer and
reflection, possibly using the Lenten Reflection booklet you received
today. Or, maybe you will participate in a retreat or attend one of the
prayer services like Taize or Stations of the Cross for the first time.
St. Margaret Mary offers many opportunities for reflection, for renewal and transformation, for worship, prayer & service. Page
through the bulletin. How is God calling you to make this Lent holy?

enfermedades.
El ministerio de Jesús está repleto de curaciones;

STRENGTHENING OUR FAITH

SMM HOMELESS MINISTRY
I am often touched by the letters I receive from people who
have gone out with us on a Sunday to share a lunch or some
clothes or grooming bags with our brothers and sisters who struggle and
live on our streets here in the South Bay and in Los Angeles. I would like
to share with you this week and next, two of the letters I have received.
-Deacon Rick
When we went out yesterday, we came upon a man who said, “Thank you
(for the lunch); I have been fighting Demons. I was heading to punch a
police officer, so I could get 3 hotties and a bed” (3-meals and a place to
sleep). I knew we prolonged his attempt to improve his dire situation and I
can only pray things will get better for him. This bothered me last night. I
didn’t even ask for his name. I was trying to figure out what, 3-hotties and
a bed meant (a friend had to tell me later). I may not have been able to
help him, but I feel I should have at least given him some words of encouragement. I felt good to be out helping others, but bad that I wasn’t as compassionate as I should be. Hopefully next time I will have more wisdom
and be able to minister better.
I wanted to share this with you because it touched me. Sometimes it’s
food, sometimes it’s a blanket, or a bag with some soap, toothbrush & deodorant that we give to our brothers and sisters. But what they are most
thankful for is our just being there with them. Your generosity makes our
presence possible.
Today and next weekend we are passing out empty plastic bags for our
Lenten Grooming Bag collection. We hope you will take a couple and return them on any Sunday during Lent with the items listed in the bags. We
need about 3600-4000 grooming bags to last us for a year. We want to
invite you to join us on Saturday March 21st for our parish evening of
stuffing our Grooming Bags (a light dinner is provided). Lent also may be
a good time to consider coming with us one time.
If you would like more information about the evening of March 21st or
about going out with us on a Sunday this spring or summer you can call
the parish office or call me at my office 310-325-1742.

PROTECTING
OUR CHILDREN
How to Report Inappropriate or Illegal
Content on the Internet
One of the main reasons that children do not report the inappropriate content they find online is fear of punishment from
parents. If you let them know that it is not their fault if they
come across an inappropriate site, they will be more willing
to come to you when it happens. If your children ever show
you a site that contains illegal behavior, such as pornographic images of children, contact your children online and
set rules for social networking, instant messaging, emailing,
online
gaming,
and
using
webcams.

Legalized abortion has obliterated so many people that
it is the equivalent of having China as the only nation
left, with all the rest of the world’s population gone.
The damage done already surpasses that of a nuclear
war. Lord, may we all share your hatred of evil and
your love for humanity.
-Fr. Frank Pavone
We are asking for empty baby food jars that
will be used for an upcoming pro-life project. These can be delivered to the Parish Office. Thank you in advance for your support.
We extend an invitation to our parishioners to
share their testimonies and thoughts in accordance
with Catholic Doctrine, concerning abortion,
euthanasia and capital punishment. These will be
printed in our weekly bulletin. These can be delivered to the Rectory.
SMM Parish prays to end death by human hands:
abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment.
