GUÍA DE ISORA
Guía de Isora, located in the southwest of the island of Tenerife, is one
of the five largest municipal districts on the island, at 143.43 Km2 and
has over fifteen kilometres of coast. Its rectangular shape, from the sea
up to the mountains, takes its easternmost end to the base of the Pico
Viejo (Mount Teide National Park) at an altitude of 2,700 metres, where it
borders on La Orotava, while to the north of the borough there is Santiago
del Teide and Adeje to the south.
Guía de Isora offers great natural and cultural diversity: the highlands,
the intermediate inland area or medianía and the coast, the traditional
hamlets and the new centres of population are the heritage of each and
every one of the people and every corner of the district.
The climate in Guía de Isora stands out for its exceptional characteristics
as the borough is protected from the trade winds with the result that it
enjoys clear skies for most of the year, with hardly any rain, together with
gentle and reliable temperatures throughout the year. Nevertheless, the
altitude is the variable that determines the differences in humidity and
temperature of the municipality.
The coastal strip (Playa de San Juan, Alcalá and Varadero) is located at
an altitude of less than two hundred metres, with a predominantly dry climate, high temperatures, little rain and an annual average temperature of
24ºC. Inland, (Guía de Isora, Chío, Tejina de Guía, Aripe, Chirche), between
600 and 800 metres above sea level, the climatic conditions vary and the
temperatures go down to 18ºC on average. Meanwhile, in the mountains
at around 1,000 metres in height, the climate is warm rather than hot,
with an annual average temperature of about 10º C.

Guía de Isora has a wide range of cuisine to offer which is made up of its
agricultural produce, meat and local fish which help you to understand
culturally the relationship between the flavours and the dishes prepared
and their place of origin and their function in the traditional cuisine of
Guía de Isora.
Nowadays, it is a pleasant challenge for the visitor to discover our gastronomy. So for those who wish to enjoy seafood, you have to try the dishes
in the restaurants in the coastal villages of Alcalá or Playa San Juan, while
the dishes from the vegetable garden and the corral are represented in
such dishes as pucheros, stews, meats and cheeses in the inland areas
of Guía de Isora, Chío, Vera de Erques, Chiguergue, Chirche and Tejina.

and attractive. The reds are, likewise, Light and
perfumed.
On the other hand, there is a limited but interesting production of sweet wines, obtained
fundamentally from the malvasía and moscatel
varieties. All of them bear the seal of the Ycoden-Daute-Isora guarantee of origin.
The sweet-making tradition of Guía de Isora can
be enjoyed in a number of confectioner’s in the
district. The sweets that are made are known all
over the island of Tenerife and indeed beyond.
There have been a number of families from
the town of Guía de Isora who have devoted
themselves to the preparation and sale of typical sweets from Canarian cake-making, whose most important elements are rosquetes,
rosquetes chicos, huesitos, almond cakes,
truchas, among other sweets. They have been
joined over the last few years by other cake and
dessert makers who have diversified and modernised the production of sweets.

The vineyards are mainly located in Chío, Chirche and Tejina and also at specific points in the
orchards of El Jaral and Acojeja.
These vineyards which are on volcanic rock and
ash and are caressed by the Atlantic climate
fundamentally produce varieties of listán blanca and negra from which white, rosé and young
red wines are made.
The first two are of great interest as they are
wines with a very modern conception, light,

The beekeeping tradition in Guía de Isora dates from before the Spanish conquest. For centuries, the knowledge of the beekeeping and
honey-making methods has been passed from
fathers to sons and from mothers to daughters.
Currently, beekeeping is another activity that is
carried on with great success in Guía de Isora.
Beekeeping takes place at heights of between
500 metres and the woodlands in the mountains, taking advantage of the areas of open
vegetation so as to obtain quality honeys.
The honey that is made in the uppermost areas
is much appreciated. This honey can be bought
in the shops in the district.

The coast of Guía de Isora includes many ways of enjoying a dip in the sea.
Beach enthusiasts have plenty to choose from: sandy beaches such as
that of the fishing village of Playa de San Juan, Playa del Abama or rural
beaches or small coves enclosed in black lava, as in Alcalá. There are also

its fifteen-kilometre coastline, which is shown
by the extraordinary succession of landscapes
and atmospheres both on the surface (cliffs,
sandy or pebbled beaches, pools, promontories
among others) and beneath the surface (rocky
shelves covered with multicoloured vegetation,
underwater caves which house endless species, among others).
In this setting, it is possible to enjoy an immense variety of sensations and landscapes, while
carrying out all kinds of activities twelve months
a year thanks to the excellent climate.

Guía de Isora possesses many natural treasures as is shown by the fact
that 61% of the territory is under some form of protection.
The protected spaces are mainly in the upper part of the borough, which
includes the south-western part of the Mount Teide National Park and the
Forest Crown Nature Park together with the Natural Monument of Montaña de Tejina.
To these natural spaces, it is necessary to add another two, which Guía
de Isora shares with Adeje. The Barranco de Erques Protected Landscape
with an area of 237.9 hectares, which includes a beautiful ravine with a
significant watercourse. And the Acantilados de La Isorana located between the mouth of the same ravine and Punta Tixera present a coastal
landscape of sheer cliffs, interrupted by the mouths of small ravines giving
rise to small coves, sometimes with gravel beaches and underwater landscapes that are perfect for diving.

Mount Teide National Park
The Forest Crown Nature Park
This space with an area of 18,990 hectares
extends from a height of 1,650 metres up to
3,718 metres, the height of the peak of Mount
Teide.
The Forest Crown Nature Park is the largest protected natural space in the Canary Islands, with
an area of 46,612 hectares, of which 5,687
correspond to the municipal district of Guía de
Isora.
This park is characterised by its dream-like
volcanic landscape in which the cones and
lava flows form an extraordinary patchwork of
colours and shapes, to which must be added
the flora and fauna, with a very high number of
endemic species including many invertebrates.
The Forest Crown is a pine forest along with
other high-mountain plant species (high mountain scrub, degraded heather and myrtle and
even laurel woodland), which surrounds the
Mount Teide National Park.
This immense natural space, which was once
the object of indiscriminate felling, is nowadays
fundamentally a great park for recreation, where it is possible to carry out all kinds of activities
in natural surroundings. Indeed, in Guía de Isora there is a barbecue and recreational area in
Chío that can be reached along the TF-38 road.

Natural Monument of Montaña de
Tejina
The Protected Landscape of Barranco de Erques is the natural frontier between the municipality of Guía de Isora and Adeje.
The Natural Monument of Montaña de Tejina,
with an area of 169.7 hectares, is made up of
an ancient volcanic dome which was subsequently covered by lava flows and salic pyroclasts. The mountain, which is flanked by the
steep-sided ravines of Guaria and Cuéscaro,
houses such endangered species as the giant
sowthistle or the field bindweed.
This natural space of 237.9 hectares, of which
101.6 belong to Guía de Isora, contains the basin of a spectacular ravine, making up a rough
landscape of great geo-morphological interest
which runs along the western slopes of the island like a deep wound that is very long.
This area houses its own plant life of the lower
and intermediate areas of the Island, with the
euphorbias and the remains of the thermophylic species, which subsist in the upper part.
This volcanic dome of 1,055 metres in height
was used by humans for agriculture as is proven by the agricultural terraces on its western
side and a number of southern sectors, but
above all the village of Las Fuentes, which was
linked to significant unirrigated agriculture on
the sands. Nowadays, this village, located to the
east of the mountain, is abandoned although
it conserves a considerable architectural and
ethnographic heritage.
In turn, the Guanches considered this mountain
to be sacred. They carried out religious practices such as rites and sacrifices for fecundity,
purification, etc.

Paragliding
Lovers of mountain-biking can enjoy the landscape along a number of routes, with one of the
best known being the one between Boca Tauce
and Tijoco Alto.
Montaña de Tejina is also a place of interest for
lovers of adventure sports as this is a place for
launching paragliders to fly down to Acantilados
de los Gigantes.
Climbing

The natural environment of Guía de Isora offers
an endless number of possibilities in direct
contact with nature, inviting the visitor to get to
know the region on foot, by bike, climbing the
mountains, with a birds’ eye view or from the
sea.
Hiking
The Acantilados de La Isorana site of Special
Scientific Interest with 24.1 hectares, of which
9.7 belong to Guía de Isora, is a coastal area of
some three kilometres in length on both sides
of the mouth of the Erques ravine, constituted
by abrupt escarpments of some 25-30 metres
in height made up of an alternation of trachytic
lava flows, basalts and trachy-basalts.
The coastal landscape is fairly uniform with
cliffs, interrupted by small ravines which give
rise to small coves, sometimes with gravel beaches.
Trekking Evasion
The cliff presents only scarce plant life, formed
by a few halophytic species from escarpments,
mainly sweet euphorbia with representative
elements of cardonal.
In Guía de Isora there is a dense network of footpaths, the result of the many ways in which the
ecosystems have been used traditionally from
the coast up to the mountains or of the periodic
exchanges between the villages.
However, the effects of the destruction of the
rock have created apertures in the walls of the
cliff that are the ideal refuge for seabirds such
as the little shearwater to make nests in.
This section of the route crosses protected
areas such as natural spaces or those for revitalisation of the cultural heritage of the inland
areas.
There is nothing better to enjoy the beauty of
the natural environment of Guía de Isora than
to walk these old pathways which make up,
nowadays, the network of municipal pathways.

The town of Guía de Isora, located in the inland area of the borough, at a
height of 580 metres, enjoys a natural environment of special beauty as in
the vicinity there is the Montaña de Tejina while to the north it is possible
to see the Pico Viejo and towards the south the coast of Isora.
In this natural environment, the municipal capital stands with a set of historical buildings in the centre which was declared in 2009 a Property of
Cultural Interest due to the conservation of a rich heritage of architecture
represented by numerous civil and religious buildings, and the existence
of an ethnographic heritage related above all with water and the unusual
nature of the current road layout, which conserves the urban section
which gave rise to the town.
The origins of the town date back to about 1536 with the discovery of the
image of Nuestra Señora de Guía and the construction of the chapel in her
honour, around which the town of Guía began to grow.
In the historical centre of Guía de Isora there is a large number of buildings that are representative of the types and shapes of traditional construction, almost always ascribable to popular and rural domestic architecture corresponding in large part to the 19th and 20th Centuries, with
some examples from the 18th Century. Apart from the buildings that are
examples of domestic architecture, there is also the Church of Nuestra
Señora de la Luz, which is of great historical, artistic and cultural value.
There are also examples of ethnographic heritage in the historical centre
of Guía de Isora. This heritage is made up of elements which up to only a
few decades ago were in daily and collective use such as water taps and
laundries which nowadays form part of the cultural heritage of the people.

of painting
The first religious building to be built in Guía de Isora
was on the initiative of the Ponte family, the Marquises of La Quinta Roja and Counts of El Palmar, and
dates from the 16th Century. This construction is due
to the appearance of an image of the Virgin of Nuestra Señora de la Luz.
Hall located on the second floor of the Culture
Councillor’s office where it is possible to appreciate the pictorial work of this artist from Guía
de Isora, who is considered to be one of the
best Canarian landscape artists, whose work
enjoys national and international recognition.
Currently the church consists of three naves, forming
a rectangle of 33 by 19 metres, with a bevel on the
main façade and a tower in axial disposition, over the
doorway.
In this exhibition, it is possible to see, in the first
room, his advertising work carried out during
his stay in Cuba between 1923 and 1932, while in the second room, his landscape work is on
display. Next to this, there are a range of personal objects belonging to the author such as
notes and sketches, different awards received
as well as photographs and books published
dealing with the life and work of the painter.
The central nave is higher than the side naves, which
allows the lighting of the interior, and its appearance
continues to be that of a traditional Canarian church.
The church has a wooden ceiling with crosspieces in
Hispano-Arabic style and a choir which juts out from
the rectangle.
The floor is made of quarried stone that is well conserved. The church also houses works of art of interest
such as altarpieces, images (Cristo de la Dulce Muerte, Nuestra Señora de la Luz), paintings (La Anunciation, Ánimas del Purgatorio) and craftsmanship in
precious metals (cruz de manga, censer and incense
boat).

shops and bazaars of all kinds, together with
food shops where you can buy local produce
and there are also cake shops which offer a
wide variety of sweets that are typical of Canarian confectionery

Romería de San Isidro
This festival, which has been celebrated since
the year 1952, has among its main events the
Baile de Magos and the Romería.
The Baile de Magos takes place on Friday evening on the square of Guía de Isora where the
people, dressed in the costume of the Mago
(meaning countryperson) bring typical food and
drinks which are shared, while they sing and
dance to the sound of popular music.
That same weekend, on Sunday to be exact,
the Romería is held in honour of San Isidro Labrador, which runs through the main streets of
the town together with Folk Groups, floats and
singing groups.
Ntra. Sra. de la Luz and
Cristo Dulce Muerte
At this festival in honour of the patron saint, the
Virgen de la Luz, a number of religious events
are held such as processions and masses and
a number of traditional public events such as
concerts, the election of the queen, open-air
dances, exhibitions, etc..
To this must be added as one of the outstanding elements, the Craftwork Fair at which over
sixty craftsmen who have come from different
points of the geography of the Canary Islands
display their work, corresponding to thirty different specialisations (ceramics, boat-building,
basket-making, crochet work, miniature toys,
bronze figures, etc).
Fiesta del Volcán
MiradasDoc
The fiesta commemorates the gratitude to the
Virgin for having saved the lives of the inhabitants and prevented the destruction of their
homes in the volcanic eruption of 1909: the
eruption of El Chinyero.
This is an International Festival of Documentary
Cinema held in Guía de Isora since 2006.
At this fiesta, the central event is the night-time
procession organised by the Brotherhood of the
Virgin through the historical centre of Guía.
The processional route is adorned with illuminated paper street lamps and fireworks are let off
as the cavalcade advances.

But MiradasDoc is not only an International Festival of Documentaries but it is also a place where
other activities such as round tables, lectures, concerts, workshops are held at the same time that
the opportunity is offered through the so-called
Miradas Market to producers/ film-makers from
Africa, Latin America and Asia, who have projects
under development to look for funding, or alternatively in the case of projects that are already
complete or alternatively in the case of completed
projects to look for distribution and screenings.
Isora Art Prize
What is more, every five years (those ending in
0 or 5) the transfer of the original image of the
Virgen de la Luz is brought here from Garachico
in commemoration of the ancient Romería that
was celebrated by the inhabitants of Garachico
for centuries.

Coinciding with the festival for the patron saint
of Guía de Isora, the Isora Art Prize is held. This
event, which has been organised since 1991 by
the Culture Councillor’s Office brings together
more and more artists each year from a wide range of locations.

An inland village located at a height of 680
metres above sea level, three kilometres away
from Guía.
At the foot of the Montaña de Tejina and between the ravines of Tejina and La Ermita, at a
height of 620 metres above sea level and in an
area of relatively abundant agricultural soils is
Tejina de Guía.
A village located in the vicinity of Tejina de Guía,
which has its origin in a spring, located next to
the Church Square, which still runs today.
A village located at a height of 690 metres above sea level, between the ravines of El Pozo and
Niágara.
In El Pozo, traditional open-air agriculture for
subsistence and livestock coexists in only a
small space with greenhouses for tomatoes in
the upper parts of the borough.
The origin of the hamlet is related with the increase in size of the land for agriculture in the
18th Century and then a short period devoted
to the prickly pear.
This village stands out for its historic centre
made up of buildings that are characteristic of
the traditional styles of the rural areas. To this
architectural heritage, elements which until
only a few decades ago were in daily, collective
use must be added, especially those linked with
water.
Among the historical heritage, the most outstanding building is the Church of Saint John the
Baptist in Chío, built in 1960, which replaced
the old 17th Century chapel.
It is precisely its link with agricultural activity
that gives it one of the most unusual sights in
the borough: the Las Fuentes hamlet.
Currently, unirrigated agriculture has been
added to the small irrigated gardens where
garlic, vines and potatoes for subsistence and
tomatoes are cultivated.
But Tejina, whose origin goes back to the 16th
Century, also houses an important architectural
heritage including the chapel, which is located
in the area of Loma de los Panchos.
This church houses two images of special beauty: Nuestra Señora de la Paz (1853-1856) and
San Juan Bautista (1655-1665).

Aripe
Aripe is located at some 750 metres above sea
level, between Guía de Isora and Chirche.
This hamlet, declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 2008, houses a significant architectural heritage linked to the work of the land which
is perceptible both in the traditional houses and
in the ethnographic heritage.
Gran Majada de la Almendra
With the purpose of building up the production
and consumption of the almond each year, there is the Gran Majada of the Almendra.

Chirche
• A re-enactment of the almond harvest as it
was done in the last century by the villagers,
who are dressed in the traditional clothing and
use the appropriate tools for the job.
• The crushing of the harvested fruit.
At the same time, tents are set up where a number of traditional cake and dessert makers from
Guía de Isora and other boroughs of south-west
Tenerife put their wares on sale, which have the
almond as one of the main ingredients. Apart
from the cakes, honey and liqueurs typical of
the district are also sold.
Chirche is a village in the upper inland part of
the district, located at a height of 800 metres
above sea level.
It is a very picturesque hamlet with a historical
centre made up of small houses, which are a
clear example of traditional architecture.
Some of these buildings have been converted
into country cottages for tourism. There is also
a rich ethnographic heritage. For all these reasons, it was declared a Property of Cultural Interest in 2008.
Day of the Traditions

wheat, dressmaking, ironing, basket-weaving,
openwork, dancing with a singing group, toasting coffee, fireworks, preparation of cheeses,
etc.
In turn, in different houses and courtyards,
traditional produce is sold. Truchas, liqueurs,
honey, sacks, dustpans, fruit and baskets.
District Wine Competition
This event is intended to promote the wines of the
district by means of a competition in which the
traditionally-prepared wines are tasted as well as
the wines from the area that are made under the
denomination of origin, Ycoden-Daute-Isora. The
best receive a prize.
This event organised by the Tenerife Island
Authority, the Guía de Isora Town Council, the
Neighbourhood Association of San Pedro de Aripe and the Agricultural Association Los Poleos,
has as its fundamental objective the increase
in value of the local almond, and so each year a
range of activities are held including:
In this fiesta, the way of life in the 1940s in
the villages is re-enacted in the streets and
houses.

El Jaral
A village in the upper inland area of Guía de Isora located at a height of 750 metres above sea
level, from which it is possible to enjoy pretty
panoramic views of the coast of Isora and the
nearby islands.
This village is located at a height of about 850
metres above sea level, next to the Erques ravine, in what was one of the areas with the greatest cereal production in the district.
A village located at a height of 820 metres above sea level next to El Pozo ravine.
The village was formed with the building of scattered houses along the old Chirche footpath during the 18th Century.
This village knew a certain development during
the following century with the cultivation of the
prickly pear for the breeding of the cochineal
insect. Nowadays the village lives from the services sector in other nearby boroughs and from
export agriculture but conserving the charm of
the hamlet both as a result of the traditional
houses and its ethnographic heritage made up
of threshing-floors and bread and tile ovens.
As a consequence of this agricultural origin,
this locality houses an attractive ethnographic
set of buildings in the area of Montiel, where it
is possible to find an old house with a threshingfloor and very close by a water-tank, a winepress and a few tile ovens.
It is precisely in connection with this economic
activity that a number of pathways were developed connecting the different villages in the
same borough or with other neighbouring municipalities.
These footpaths make it possible to enjoy the
natural beauty that surrounds Vera de Erques
and the beautiful panoramic views of the area,
especially the coast of Guía de Isora.

This hamlet is linked to agricultural activity,
both due to the relationship of its economy with
the cultivation of late tomatoes and the existence of vegetable gardens devoted to production
for subsistence.
This fact constitutes one of the greatest attractions given that it makes it possible to enjoy the
beautiful spots that agricultural activity creates
and the natural environment itself which surrounds this village whether you are visiting it or
following one of the range of footpaths that link
this settlement with others.

Playa de San Juan
Playa de San Juan is a coastal village located at
the mouth of the Guía ravine, in a small bay protected from the winds. This village has played a relatively important role, firstly as a port of supply for
coastal traffic and later as a fishing port.
Currently in Playa de San Juan there is a mixture
of the traditional flavours of the fishing port with
manifestations of modern times such as the sails
of leisure craft, canoes or surfboards.
The beauty of this village can be enjoyed by walking along the coast, thanks to a promenade of
almost two kilometres in length which runs around
this village and leads to its beach with all kinds
of services (sunbeds, parasols, showers, footwashes, changing rooms, toilets, etc.) and which
presents an old lime kiln as an original element.
You can gain access to the beach from a wide
ocean-front boulevard which runs around the
coast from Playa de San Juan, which is full of
restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood,
which will make it possible for you to complete
your day with a pleasant stroll and some food
that is typical of the island’s gastronomy.

Fiestas
This 19th Century kiln, which is currently in disuse, was once used for producing lime, an indispensable element in traditional building, from
the baking of limestone at a temperature of between 900 and 1,200ºC for several days.
These fiestas are held in honour of San Juan
and the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen. For this reason, one of the main events
is the Marian embarkation, when the Virgin is
taken onto a boat and is carried around the bay
accompanied by all kinds of other craft, which
sound their klaxons.
Shopping area
Together with this remarkable event, we should
also mention another, the firework show of the
festival.
Seafront boulevard
The seafront, which is almost two kilometres
long, runs from one end of the village to another
enabling you to enjoy the beauty of its coast and
the charm of the small shops, as well as restaurants, serving especially fresh fish and seafood,
which are to be found along the front and on the
streets which run off it.
Flea Market
The climb to Guía de Isora Rally
Beach
Speed enthusiasts can enjoy an event which is
part of the Provincial Motor Racing Championship: the so-called Climb to Guía de Isora.
Located in the fishing village of the same name,
this is the beach par excellence of the Isora
coast. This sandy beach with its calm waters is
fully equipped and offers a relaxed atmosphere
for rest and enjoyment of the entire family.
This event consists of two routes of five and
eight kilometres on the TF 463 road which joins
Playa de San Juan and Guía de Isora. This event
is held in December in the municipal district of
Guía de Isora.

In Playa de San Juan the commercial activity mainly
extends along three large avenues: Avda. Juan Carlos
I, Avda. del Emigrante and Avda. Reina Sofía.
Here there are small shops, mixed with numerous
bars, cafeterias and restaurants. In this way, after
doing your shopping, you can enjoy a coffee at one of
the numerous terrace bars in the village or alternatively try some of the dishes offered by the restaurants
in the area.
What is more, in Playa de San Juan, every Wednesday morning, (9:00-14:00) you can enjoy
the market located in Plaza Estrella Polar where
it is possible to find an extensive range of produce including everything from handicrafts to
antiques and from textiles to ornaments.

A coastal village which, located next to a small
bay, has on its seafront an enormous area with
scattered pools and rocks in incredible shapes
inhabited by a multitude of marine species, including especially crustaceans which appear at

This coastal area offers spectacular sunsets
with views of exceptional colours, especially as

the tide rises.
Together with these imposing natural manifestations on the sea shore, there is the fishing
village of Alcalá.

old, allowing you to enjoy a quiet walk along the

In Alcalá, much of the commercial activity
is concentrated in Avenida Los Pescadores
although it is complemented by Calle Mondiola,
Núñez de Balboa, Méndez and Plaza del Llano.
In the festival in honour of Nuestra Señora
de Candelaria, a range of religious and public
events are held, the most important of which is
the sea-borne procession.
In the streets, together with the clothes and
shoe shops and the so-called bazaars you can
find cafés with terraces or restaurants with local produce which invite you to complete your
day by trying the tastes of Isora.
The Virgin is taken from the church to the dock,
where she embarks and is taken on a trip round
the bay together with other boats which sound
their klaxons while accompanying her.
Flea Market
This fiesta ends with one of the largest firework
shows on the island, which brings both residents and holidaymakers to Alcalá.
In Alcalá you can enjoy the flea market located
in Plaza del Llano every Sunday morning (9:00
a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) where you can find a wide range of produce including everything from crafts
to antiques and from textiles to ornaments.
