I spent a lot of my time on organizational issues, particularly our budget. I presented it first to our Officers and Program Heads for their review and then fielded their questions. Next it was sent on to the Trustees for their review and approval. The Trustees asked some very good questions that I have looked into and given them back answers. Bob Morris and I will do a final re-cap and re-present the budget to the Trustees for their approval. In addition to Bob Morris, I would also like to thank Mike Artzer and David Delucia for their work and help on this year's budget. The big item on the August 10th Council Business Meeting agenda will be brainstorming on new ways to raise money for our Council. Our budget is very tight this year and we have lost some fund raisers such as the yard sale. So we need some new fund raisers. I do not want to dip into our reserves. After our discussion, I will then appoint a committee to follow-up on the Council's ideas and present a plan to the Council no later than the October Business Meeting. I am going to be spending time with Fr. Matthew in early August to talk about the Knights and our Parish. I was sorry to learn that St. Brendan's is loosing Fr. Juan. He is moving to a parish in Sandy Springs. On the positive side of the ledger, the Legionnaires and the Archdiocese have appointed Fr. Thanh (Tan) Nguyen to St. Brendan's. During July, Doug Hoffman, Bob Morris and I attended the semi-annual District 16 Deputy meeting at St. Benedict's. Then on the following Saturday, Dick Flaig, Chris Bell, Bob Morris and I attended the State KofC semi-annual meeting. Both meetings emphasized the recruiting of new Knights, retention of existing Knights and “hitting the ground running” - i.e.: don't take the summer off! Doug Hoffman informs me that we should have some new Knights for a First Degree Exemplification on August 3rd. Doug, you and your committee, Chris Bell and Damian Grzywacz are off to a great start! He gastado bastante tiempo organizando cosas, especialmente nuestro presupuesto. Se lo presenté primero a los Oficiales y Directores de Programas para su revision y respondieron con preguntas. Después se lo mandé a los Fideicomisarios para su revision y aprobación, quienes me hicieron unas buenas preguntas y así mismo les respondí. Con Bob Morris haremos un análisis final y presentaremos de nuevo el presupuesto a los Fideicomisarios para su aprobación. Además de Bob Morris, quiero agradecer a Mike Artzer y David Delucia por su ayuda y trabajo preparando el presupuesto de este año. El punto importante en la agenda de la reunión del Consejo el 10 de Agosto, será el compartir ideas de como recaudar dinero para el Consejo. Nuestro presupuesto está muy justo este año y hemos perdido oportunidades de recaudar fondos como la venta de “yarda”(yard sale). Por eso necesitamos nuevos eventos recaudadores de fondos. No quiero acudir a nuestras reservas. Después de nuestra discusión, nominaré un comité para hacer un seguimiento de todas las ideas del Consejo y presentar un plan al Consejo a más tardar en la reunión de Octubre. Hablaré en Agosto con el Padre Matthew acerca de los Caballeros de Colón y nuestra Parroquia. Siento mucho la partida del Padre Juan, ha sido transferido a una parroquia en Sandy Springs. Viéndolo de una manera positiva, los Legionarios y la Arquidiócesis han asignado al Padre Octavio Ventura para San Brendan. Durante el mes de Julio, Doug Hoffman, Bob Morris y yo atendimos la reunión semestral del Distrito #16 en San Benedict. Doug Hoffman me informó que tendremos algunos candidatos para la Iniciación de Primer Grado del 3 de Agosto. Doug, usted y su comité, Chris Bell y Damián Grzywacz empezaron a lo grande. Personalmente, descansaré el Viernes 14 de Agosto para celebrar nuestro 44 aniversario de bodas con mi esposa y prometida, Martha. Mantengan pendientes nuestras metas para este año: Obtener el premio Consejo estrella de nuevo. Todas nuestras actividades deben reflejar nuestros valores de Caridad, Unidad, Fraternidad y Patriotismo. (Pictures provided by Doug Hoffman ) Knights Golf Outing (Picture provided by Joe Fenton) K NI G HTS NAV I G AT OR PAGE 7 V OLU ME 7 , ISSUE 7 Recruiting New Knights and Upcoming Exemplifications Recruiting New Knights Just as Father McGivney personally asked the men of his parish to assist him in meeting the needs of his parishioners, so too must members of your Council ask every eligible Catholic man to join their Council and assist with meeting people’s needs. As Supreme Knight Carl Anderson reminded us, "It is our moral obligation to invite every eligible Catholic man to join the Knights of Columbus.” If you have read last month’s issue of the Columbian then you have received two copies of the new form 100 (half page). Please make it your mission this year to recruit at least one Knight. We have been informed that all five Councils in our District attained their quota in both membership and insurance gains. With that, the Council became eligible to be a "star" Council. When all the Councils in a District attain "Star" status, the District is referred to as an "all-star district”. We should not forget the power of prayer and make it the first step in recruiting a prospective candidate into our Council. Here are the other proven ten steps for recruiting new Knights into our Council. Please mark your calendars for our next recruiting drive, August 22nd-23rd. Talk about your positive experiences as a member of the Knights of Columbus and share your enthusiasm for your Council. Convey a sense of enthusiasm, excitement and pride when talking about the great things your Council accomplishes and the people who are being helped. Offer some personal stories of how volunteering has helped you grow in your faith and what being a Knight means to you. Positive attitude and body language count. Your facial expressions and body language show about how you feel about being a Knight of Columbus. Maintain a positive attitude, smile often, avoid being negative and always look the prospective member in the eye when talking with him. Talk to the prospective member and his wife about the ways his joining your Council benefits their family. Presenting the good works a man can help accomplish when joining the Knights, the opportunity for spiritual growth and the fraternal benefits offered to a prospective member, his wife and family, can help convince him to join. Point out that volunteering and Council social activities, as well as many benefits such as scholarships, the insurance program, and others, are open to the member’s entire immediate family. Make sure that your members are visible when conducting a charitable service project. When members, their families and other volunteers wear Knights of Columbus branded apparel while conducting a charitable service project, it conveys unity and identifies your Council to the community. Witnessing your Council’s unity when conducting service projects will entice prospective members to inquire about joining your Council. Presume that a prospect is interested in being a part of the Knights and ask him to join. Family, friends, co-workers and fellow parishioners all present recruitment opportunities. Ask each of these prospective members if he would like to join your Council. Approach recruiting in a different way. Instead of asking, “Would you like to join my Council?” ask a prospective member: “Would you be interested in learning more about the Knights of Columbus and our local Council?” This offers the opportunity to explain the benefits of joining to the prospective member in a more flexible way. What to say when the answer is “I don’t have time.” Many prospective members, when they are approached to join the Knights of Columbus, comment, that “they are too busy,” have “too much work”, involved with my “children’s hectic school schedule”, and similar reasons. Be prepared with a simple answer, like “the amount of time you put in is completely up to you. Even one or two Saturdays a year would be a big help. Also, with the family oriented activities we offer, you’ll have more opportunities to spend time with your family.” Promote your Council’s spirituality. Place emphasis on your Council’s involvement in the spiritual life of your parish. Promote Council corporate communions, retreats, family Mass, Eucharistic adora(Continued on page 9) K NI G HTS NAV I G AT OR PAGE 8 V OLU ME 7 , ISSUE 7 Reclutando Nuevos Caballeros y Próximas Iniciaciones Reclutando Nuevos Caballeros y Próximas Iniciaciones Reclutando Nuevos Caballeros Así como el Padre McGivney le pidió personalmente a los hombres de su parroquia que le ayudaran a suplir las necesidades de sus parroquianos, todos ustedes miembros de nuestro Consejo deben preguntarle a todo Católico practicante para que se una a su Consejo y ayude a servir las necesidades de nuestra gente. Como nos recuerda el Caballero Supremo Carl Anderson, “ es nuestra obligación moral el invitar a todo Católico elegible a unirse a los Caballeros de Colón”. Si usted leyó la revista Columbia del mes pasado, recibió entonces 2 copias de la nueva aplicación(Form 100) en la mitad de la revista. Por favor, que sea su misión reclutar por lo menos 1 Caballero. Hemos sido informados que los 5 Consejos que forman nuestro Distrito, lograron alcanzar sus cuotas de miembros nuevos y miembros asegurados. No podemos olvidar el poder de la oración y hacer de ella el primer paso cuando vamos a reclutar un candidato para nuestro Consejo. A continuación están los 10 pasos necesarios para reclutar nuevos Caballeros para nuestro Consejo. Por favor marquen sus calendarios para la próxima campaña de membresía el 22 y 23 de Agosto: 1.- Hable de sus experiencias positivas como miembro de los Caballeros de Colón y comparta su entusiasmo por nuestro Consejo. * Demuestre entusiasmo, alegría y orgullo cuando les hable de los logros de su Consejo y de la gente que ayuda. Cuénteles cómo siendo voluntario le ha ayudado a aumentar su fe y qué significa para usted ser un Caballero de Colón. 2.- Actitud positiva y expresión corporal influyen mucho. * Su expresión facial y corporal muestran lo que usted siente al ser un Caballero de Colón. Mantenga una actitud positiva, sonría siempre, evite ser negativo y siempre mírelo a los ojos. 3.- Cuéntele al candidato cómo su esposa y su familia pueden beneficiarse con los servicios fraternales de los Caballeros de Colón. * Muéstrele como puede ayudar a lograr las buenas obras uniéndose a los Caballleros de Colón, las oportunidades de crecer espiritualmente y los servicios fraternales ofrecidos al candidato y su familia para convencerlo a unirse a nosotros. Hágale saber que el ser voluntario y las actividades sociales del Consejo, así como las becas, el programa de Seguros y otros están disponibles para toda la familia cuando se una a nuestro Consejo. 4.- Asegúrese de que los miembros del Consejo sean visibles cuando se efectúe una obra de caridad. * Cuando los miembros, sus familias y otros voluntarios utilizan las prendas marcadas con los Caballeros de Colón en servicios de caridad, muestra nuestra unidad e identifica su Consejo con la comunidad. Al ver la unidad de su Consejo en las diferentes actividades, los candidatos serán impulsados a preguntar como vincularse al Consejo. 5.- Asuma que un candidato quiere ser parte de los Caballeros e invítelo a iniciarse. * Familia, amigos, compañeros de trabajo y feligreses son oprtunidades para reclutar miembros Pregúntele a cada uno de estos candidatos si le gustaría unirse a nuestro Consejo. 6.- Enfrente el reclutamiento de una manera diferente. * En vez de preguntar, “Le gustaría unirse a mi Consejo”, pregúntele al candidato: “Estaría usted interesado en aprender más acerca de los Caballeros de Colón y de nuestro Consejo local?” Esto ofrece la oportunidad de explicar los beneficios a un candidato de una manera más flexible. 7.- Qué responder cuando la respuesta es: “Yo no tengo tiempo”. * Muchos candidatos, cuando son invitados a convertirse en Caballeros de Colón, dicen que “ellos están muy ocupados”, que “tienen mucho trabajo”, envueltos con “el complicado programa de la escuela de mis hijos”, y situaciones similares. Esté preparado con una respuesta sencilla, así como “el tiempo que usted va a gastar depende completamente de usted. Uno o dos Sábados por año sería una gran ayuda. También, todas las actividades son orientadas hacia la familia, por lo tanto, tendrá más oportunidades de compartir tiempo juntos con su familia “. 8.- Promueva la espiritualidad de su Consejo. * Ponga énfasis en como su Cosejo forma parte de la vida espiritual de su parroquia. Involve young people. Ask young men to join your Council. Recruiting a wide range of age groups will provide your Council with greater reach within your community. Use targeted advertising, especially social media, to reach younger prospective members. Follow-up with all prospects in a timely manner. No matter how the prospective member was initially engaged, it is essential that follow-up communication, by personal contact, needs to occur within a few days at the most. This shows the prospective member that your Council cares and places a high priority on meeting his expectations. Our monthly events for 2015 will begin in March and end after the October “Championship”. All levels of ability/experience are welcome to participate. Knights/family/friends are invited with pairings done to facilitate fellowship. Our objective is to have fun and it is not a competitive event. If you wish to join us on either a regular or occasional basis please email Curtis Weeks ([email protected]) to be added to the email notification. A variety of courses are played throughout the local area. An email notification will be sent to the golf distribution list two weeks prior to the scheduled date. It’s very likely that someone in your immediate or extended family or group of friends is facing financial uncertainty. Maybe there’s a possibility that you (or your spouse) could lose your job or change employers. Too many people have often relied on group term life insurance as their only safety net. Often, this insurance is an employee benefit provided at low or no cost. The existence of this coverage might convince someone that personally -owned life insurance is not necessary. But only having “through work” insurance can leave you and your family vulnerable. Most group life insurance policies are limited in amount, which may be tied to salary or some other benchmark. These numbers are often capped, and this cap may be dangerously low when compared to your family’s actual needs. In fact, a detailed needs analysis that evaluates your specific situation, will likely show that any employer-provided coverage falls short. In addition, the amount of group insurance offered is almost always reduced, sometimes dramatically, when you retire. You could one day find yourself without coverage, and if your health has changed (which it will as you age), you might also find yourself unable to secure individual protection. At the very least, it will definitely be more expensive. While group life insurance can help, it does not replace the need for individually owned life insurance. The GK reminded everyone that training is required for anyone the will be working with the youth or the elderly. This has to be renewed every five years. 11. Doug H. gave a short status report. On membership goals for new brothers this year is 16 and if we clean out some old members it could be more. 12. Dale gave a short status report: Soccer tryouts at the playground have been approved. 13. Vin O. gave a short status report on the "Tinker Projects" they have been working on. 14. Registration starts at 1:30 pm with the competition starting at 2:00 pm. The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is a competition designed for players to demonstrate the most basic soccer skill – the penalty kick. Open to all boys and girls, ages 9-14, where each player will be allowed 15 shots at the goal from the penalty line (12 yards from the goal). Winners of the boys and girls age groups 9 to 14 progress to the district level. El Reto del Futbol de los Caballeros de Colón es una competencia diseñada para que los jugadores demuestren la más básica destreza del Futbol(Soccer), el tiro penal.
