June 5, Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This weekend we officially begin the Sundays of
Ordinary Time. But in Church lingo “ordinary” does mean
what it does in secular lingo. In the secular, “ordinary”
means boring, routine, regular, normal, blah. But in the
Church, “Ordinary” means having been put in order,
orderly, ordered, arranged, sequential. So, apart from the
special liturgical seasons like Advent, Christmas, Lent,
Eastertime, today we begin with the 10th Sunday of
Ordinary Time, next Sunday the 11th, then the 12th, and so
on till we end with the 34th Sunday of Ordinary Time; then
Advent begins in late November or early December. So,
Ordinary Time is not ordinary—it’s full of life. The best way
to visualize this time is to see the green vestments used in
Ordinary Time. They remind us of green vegetation, which
is alive, growing, producing flowers, fruit, seeds, acorns. So
should be our spiritual lives: fruitful, active, productive, like
the grape branches attached to the vine. Have a wonderful,
dynamic spiritual life this summer and fall.
St. Vincent de Paul is our ministry to assist the
needy. We have about 30 members and do weekly
meetings filled with spiritual prayer and growth as we seek
to understand and imitate the Lord’s love for the poor.
Then we reflect upon how we can financially help the
people who come to us in need; two members would have
already visited the family in their home, and then we
prayerfully decide the best manner to serve them. You the
members of the parish of St. Francis support the fund from
which we distribute our charity. You have been very
generous with donations, but from time to time we have a
fund raiser. Next Saturday evening we will have an old
fashioned Bingo. Please see the fuller announcement in the
bulletin for details, and I hope you can join us.
Please note that there will be a Mass with the
anointing of the sick this Saturday. Please see the bulletin
announcement on page 6.
Parishioners with a worried look on their face have
asked me if Fr. Zach is OK. Yes, he is doing great! He has
just been sent to our Holy Trinity Seminary to help in the
formation of seminarians. Worried parishioners have seen
his name in our bulletin because a parishioner has Mass
intentions for him.
Este fin de semana comienzan oficialmente los
domingos del Tiempo Ordinario. Pero en el lenguaje de la
Iglesia "Ordinario" no significa lo mismo que en el lenguaje
laico. En el lenguaje laico "ordinario" significa aburrida, rutinaria, común, normal, etc. Pero en el lenguaje de la Iglesia,
"Ordinario" es el hecho de haber sido puesto en orden, en
forma metódica, cuidadosamente, organizado y en forma
secuencial. Por lo tanto, aparte de los tiempos litúrgicos
especiales como: Adviento, Navidad, Cuaresma y Tiempo de
Pascua, hoy comenzamos con el 10º domingo de tiempo
ordinario, y el próximo domingo será el 11º, le seguirá el
12º, y así sucesivamente hasta que terminamos con el domingo 34º de tiempo ordinario; a continuación, el tiempo
de Adviento comenzará a finales de noviembre o principios
de diciembre. Por lo tanto el tiempo ordinario no es ordinario; este tiempo está lleno de vida. La mejor manera de reconocerlo visualmente es al ver las vestiduras verdes utilizadas en tiempo ordinario; ellas nos recuerdan la vegetación
verde, la cual está viva, en crecimiento y produciendo flores, frutos, semillas y bellotas. Así debe ser nuestra vida espiritual: fructífera, activa y productiva como las ramas de
uvas unidas a la vid. Debemos tener una vida espiritual maravillosa y dinámica este verano y otoño.
San Vicente de Paul es nuestro ministerio que
ayuda a los necesitados. Tenemos alrededor de 30 miembros y hacemos reuniones semanales llenas de oración y
crecimiento espiritual a medida que tratamos de entender e
imitar el amor del Señor por los pobres. También se delibera cómo podemos ayudar financieramente a las personas
con necesidad que piden ayuda. Dos miembros de SVDP
visitan con anterioridad a la familia en su casa y luego en
oración decidimos la mejor forma de servirles a ellos. Ustedes, los miembros de la parroquia de San Francisco proveen
los fondos que distribuimos para la caridad. Ustedes han
sido muy generosos con las donaciones pero, de vez en
cuando tenemos una recaudación de fondos. El próximo
sábado por la noche tendremos el tradicional bingo. Por
favor revise el boletín para ver más detalles y espero que
nos puedan acompañar.
Algunos feligreses preocupados, me
han preguntado si el padre Zach está bien. ¡Él se encuentra
muy bien! Él acaba de ser enviado a nuestro Seminario de la
Santísima Trinidad (Holy Trinity Seminary) para ayudar en la
formación de los seminaristas. Ustedes han visto su nombre
en nuestro boletín porque un feligrés solicitó unas intenciones de Misa por él.
