Pantry needs: cereal, crackers, soup, Ramen, pork and beans, corn, green

IN THE VINEYARD
As usual, today’s first and third scripture readings are
obviously related, with the second continuing one of
Paul’s Letters—these days, the Letter to the Philippians.
The vineyard stories from Isaiah and Matthew both talk
about evildoers coming to a bad end.
In Isaiah, it’s the vineyard itself that produces “wild
grapes” instead of the crop the owner dreamed of and
worked for. So it will be “trampled” and “overgrown with
thorns.” In Matthew, those to whom the owner leased the
vineyard destroy the dream. So the owner “will put those
wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard
to other tenants” (Matthew 21:41).
Yes, if we reject divine love we come to a bad end.
And with all this talk of the unfaithful being trampled and
thrown out, it’s consoling to hear Paul’s message to the
Philippians, who were by no means perfect. “Have no
anxiety at all,” Paul said. “Then the God of peace will be
with you” (Philippians 4:6, 9).

EN LA VIÑA
Como de costumbre, la primera y tercera lecturas
de las Escrituras del día de hoy están evidentemente
relacionadas, mientras que la segunda lectura continúa
una de las cartas de Pablo, que en estos días es la conocida carta a los filipenses. Las historias de la viña, de
Isaías y Mateo, hablan de malhechores que van a
“acabar mal”. En Isaías, es la propia viña la que produce “uvas amargas” en vez de la cosecha que el dueño
soñaba con tener y por la que trabajó. Por lo tanto, la
viña será “pisoteada” y “cubierta con espinos”. En Mateo, son aquellos a los que el dueño arrendó la viña los
que destruyeron el sueño. Por consiguiente el dueño
“hará morir sin compasión a esa gente tan mala y
arrendará la viña a otros” (Mateo 21:41).
Efectivamente, si rechazamos el amor divino vamos a acabar mal. Además con todo este hablar sobre
los infieles que son pisoteados y expulsados, es un consuelo oír el mensaje de Pablo a los Filipenses quienes,
bajo ningún concepto, eran perfectos. “No se inquieten
por nada”, dice Pablo (Filipenses 4:6). “Y el Dios de la
paz estará con ustedes” (Filipenses 4:9).

wishing to prepare to receive a sacrament to have participated
in a parish religious education program at least one year prior
to enrollment in our sacramental program.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Each October we celebrate “Respect Life Month,” a time when we reflect more deeply upon the sanctity of
life, from conception to natural death. We pray for the weak and vulnerable, the unborn and the elderly, for
the innocent in the womb, as well as for the most guilty. We pray for a spirit of mercy and not vengeance, for
an overturning of the death penalty as we pray also for the victims’ families of violent crime, for Christ’s
peace through His mercy and love to comfort them. We pray for Christians and minorities throughout the
world who suffer from war and persecution. We pray that Amendment One and other legislative measures
that affirm a “yes to life” will be sustained with your vote for life. In the darkening clouds of violence, war,

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
One of the great privileges of living in a democracy is the right of its citizens to vote. Although the Catholic
Church will never identify itself with any political community or system, we can and must speak up in support
of moral issues. One such issue that we as Catholics will have an opportunity to vote on November 4th is
Amendment One. This amendment is neither a Republican nor Democrat issue, but a moral and life issue of
greatest magnitude. A yes vote on Amendment One, a prolife amendment, would neutralize the extreme
interpretation taken by the Tennessee State Supreme Court in 2000 in which they declared that our State
Constitution guarantees the right to an abortion. Passage of this Amendment would restore back to the voter
the “life” decisions that were taken from them by the state court decision. For this reason, I and my brother
Bishops in Nashville and Memphis wholeheartedly ask for your support for “life” by voting for “Yes on One”

This Fall, the 40 Days for Life campaign begins Sept. 24 and concludes on Nov. 2. This is a peaceful,
prayerful, lawful, 40-day prayer vigil in front of the Regional Women’s Clinic abortion site, 2901 West State
Street, Bristol, TN.
LIFE CHAIN is scheduled for Sunday, October 5, from 2:00 until 3:30 pm, at Heritage Baptist Church on
John Exum Parkway across from Science Hill High School. It's important that we turn out as many people as
possible to focus attention on the abortion issue which will be on the November ballot for vote on
Amendment 1.
The Green Interfaith Network invites you to a panel discussion, Sunday, October 19 from 3:00-5:00. Dr. Jerry Cappel, Environmental Network Coordinator for Province IV of the Episcopal Church and a panel of other faith leaders fro the Tri Cities area will
