NEW LAUNDRY REASONS TO BUILD A NEW LAUNDRY Regarding hygiene conditions in cloth washing, Children Home facilities usually present two main problems: -No specific place for drying clothes, causing that children will scatter their clothes everywhere (as seen in pictures above: dining room, children rooms, garden…) -Sun & Air cloth-drying is not possible during monsoon season: when it rains they all take their clothes inside, with very little ventilation and no direct sun. Doctors always advice direct sun-drying to kill all kinds of bacteria, avoiding proliferation of scabies, lice and other diseases. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 1C 1. NEW LAUNDRY DESIGN ADAPTED TO LOCAL MATERIALS Different local constructions were observed to ensure that the project would be constructible. Here’s some interesting existing elements: -Transparent Roof (new hospital facilities). It will be very useful for letting the sunlight inside and letting the clothes dry easily, even when big rain is falling. -Washing-hands Slab (children home). A wider one will be very useful for washing clothes waist-height, more comfortably and not having to kneel on the ground. -Garden Porch (children home). Intended for meetings, but during rainy season it is packed with drying clothes. It hasn’t got enough space for all children’s clothes, it has no lines, no transparent roof… -Fountain Design (children home). Built for cloth-washing on the ground. Round faucet support has been reproduced in the new laundry porch design. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 1D 1. NEW LAUNDRY 1.1. New Drying House will have following features: -Transparent Roof. It lets the sun inside, even when it rains. This ensures better cloth-drying & disinfection. -Washing-cloths Slab. A 60cms wide slab put along faucet-wall, so children & staff can wash clothes waistheight, not kneeling. Taps will be connected to newly reused solar panels in kitchen roof, so children will be able to wash with hot/warm water, instead of cold water. This improves hygiene conditions. -Surrounding Fence. Laundry porch will have a perimeter fence to ensure a protected space for laundry activities only. Drying space has enough room for all children & staff clothes. (As in existing garden porch) -Drying lines. These lines will be supported on a metal frame, which will be hanging from main metal trusses. These secondary frames will have different height adjustments, depending on children’s ages. 1.2. New Back Door & Roof Reparation in Hostel A. New Door will improve Hostel ventilation and will shorten the way to Clothes Porch. Other than that, Hostel A roof needs to be reparated due to some leaks. 1.3. Reused Solar Panels. Due to toilet cancelation, a set of solar panels and water tank will be reused on top of the kitchen, in order to provide hot water to kitchen and clothes porch. Human Team HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 2B 2. NEW PANTRY NEW STORE ROOM & RELATED INTERVENTIONS The new pantry space has been divided into four different areas of intervention, which will contribute to a better use of the existing spaces: 2.1. New Kitchen Store-Room. Placed in the Hostel B toilet (cancellation works will be required). This toilet is no longer necessary, since the Toilet Module is very close. A new door will be opened on the outer wall, to access the new room from outside, shortening the distance to the kitchen. 2.2. New Back-Door in Hostel B. This will improve Hostel ventilation and will shorten the way to the Toilet Module. 2.3. Dish-Washing Porch. Children don’t have a place to keep their plates and to be able to wash them properly. Now they do it in fountains, in the kitchen, etc… but it’s not working well. A new place for this is required. 2.4. Kitchen Improvements. In order to increase kitchen’s capacity, some new furniture & metal racks will be bought (see kitchen plan), and other little improvement works will be done (fixing fire placement, fixing chimney…) HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 2C STORE-ROOM & KITCHEN IMPROVEMENTS New Rack for Store Room August 2013 New Cupboard for Kitchen New Kitchen Store-Room in a separate room New Lower Metal Rack for pots HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 2D NEW BACK DOORS IN HOSTELS A & B August 2013 Back Door at Hostel A and Hostel B Inside views from the corridor HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3A 1. Garden Improvements 6. Water Tank for Garden 7. Financial Summary 8. Human Team HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3B 3. ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING REHAB. NEW STORE ROOM & RELATED INTEVENTIONS The ground floor at the administrative building, used by volunteers, needs a small store-room and some metal racks for both volunteer room & store-room. Other than that, net doors are needed in library. 3.1. New Visitor’s Store-Room. A wall has to be built, a new door and net wall to fill it up to the ceiling. 3.2. Furniture & Metal Racks. Needed in volunteer’s room, approximately one for each bed. 3.3. Net Doors in Library. Another administrative building that needs some fixing: two new net doors are extremely necessary to keep mosquitoes away. Sometimes activities cannot be held correctly, due to many mosquitoes. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3C ATTIC STORE ROOM CLEANING August 2013 All these useless objects were kept at the attic Volunteers emptying the attic Currently, there is no room for grains to be dried, so they lay on the corridor floor… HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3D ATTIC STORE ROOM GROUND EMPTYING August 2013 This is how the attic looked while being emptied: a thick layer of earth & stones (traditional paving) was on the ground, which made it very difficult for cleaning and maintenance. Emptying works HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3E ATTIC STORE ROOM GROUND EMPTYING August 2013 After 3 days of intense work, here’s all the stones and earth the workers took out. Incredible! All this weight was supported by a wooden roof… HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3F ATTIC STORE ROOM GROUND EMPTY August 2013 And this is how the previously covered wooden pavement looked! HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 3G ATTIC STORE ROOM FINISHED August 2013 Finally, ground covered with plaster makes it more practical, useful and easy to clean. It has been a great improvement! Metal strings to hang corn & other grains for drying HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5A 1. New Laundry 2. New Pantry 3. Administrative Building Rehabilitation 4. Playground Area Conditioning 4.1. Playground Leveling 4.2. Fence for Henhouse 4.3. Former Piggery Rehabilitation 5. Garden Improvements 5.1. Bamboo planting 5.2. Fruit Tree planting 5.3. Ox hiring (for lot #5) 6. Water Tank for Garden 7. Financial Summary 8. Human Team HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5 B 4. PLAYGROUND AREA CONDITIONING In order to protect the playground, there are some works to be done: 4.1. Playground Leveling. A bit of leveling will be enough, no hard pavement is required. On the other hand, to protect this playground from animals, we must do: 4.2. Fence for Henhouse. A wall has to be built up to 80-90cms height, and on top of this wall a net closure has to be put, in order to prevent hens from going to the playground/kitchen garden. 4.3. Former Piggery Rehabilitation. This piggery can be used as a small henhouse. Hens can provide the children with fresh eggs and children can take care of hens. 5. GARDEN IMPROVEMENTS The kitchen garden needs these three urgent interventions in order to be working 100%: 5.1. Bamboo Planting. In the area indicated on map. It would be very useful for tomatoes, for building little greenhouses, etc… 5.2. Fruit Tree Planting. Some new species should be planted, specially avocado, in order to improve and vary their daily diet. 5.3. Ox Hiring For Lot #5. This new area has to be cultivated, but it is impossible to clean it up and prepare the land by hand. So, a couple of oxes are required to come to the kitchen garden and start their work. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5C SEPTIC TANK REPARATION August 2013 Some problems had been going on for years, so it was important to do something about it eventually. So, they started digging, looking for the causes… HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5D SEPTIC TANK REPARATION August 2013 After some digging, they finally find one of the jams HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5E SEPTIC TANK REPARATION August 2013 Oops! A drain pipe at a right angle is not correctly installed… we have to fix it! There you go: now it’s fixed and it’s totally straight: it drains much better! HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5F SEPTIC TANK REPARATION August 2013 After some days of digging, we finally finished all the reparations; now, only the pavement is left HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5F GARDEN IMPROVEMENTS July - August 2013 Children planting different kinds of fruit trees HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 4&5F GARDEN IMPROVEMENTS July - August 2013 Farmer leading two oxes, working in the new area of the garden HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 6A 1. New Laundry 2. New Pantry 3. Administrative Building Rehabilitation 4. Playground Area Conditioning 5. Garden Improvements 6. Water Tank for Garden 6.1. Plumbing System Reparation 6.2. Ground Tank Bomb renewal 6.3. Roof Tank Bomb Fixing 7. Financial Summary 8. Human Team HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 6B 6. WATER TANK FOR GARDEN 6.1. Plumbing System Reparation. Not working properly now, it needs to be fixed urgently. 6.2. Ground-Tank Bomb Renewal. The water tank was done but the bomb has never worked. To be renewed. 6.3. Roof-Tank Bomb Fixing. Fixing not-functioning ones and investigate why they don’t work properly. After two consecutive summers, the problem hasn’t been solved yet. So, a plumbing specialist should be hired. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 6C WATER PUMP & WATER TANK REPARATION August 2013 The previously done water tank was not working correctly: due to lack of overflow system, there was water coming inside the pump space, which was causing damages very often. We decided to build an overflow system (not seen) and a new cover for pump space (above right). HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 6D PLUMBING SYSTEM REPARATION August 2013 All the pipes in the compound that were not working, were fixed or replaced. HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 7A 1. New Laundry 2. New Pantry 3. Administrative Building Rehabilitation 4. Playground Area Conditioning 5. Garden Improvements 6. Water Tank for Garden 7. Financial Summary 8. Human Team HP PROJECT IMPROVEMENT BHIMPHEDI CHILDREN HOME 7B FINANCIAL SUMMARY October 2013 Some minor concepts on the initial budget have changed, due to more urgent needs. This happens very often, once on the site. On the other hand, HP eventually granted us more money than we were expecting, so we could divert some of the Rotary Club grant into a community project for the village. So, thanks to HP efforts and its staff, not only we achieved to do our improvements, but we also achieved to finish a water purification project in the village, thanks to both Rotary Club and UPC University students collaboration.
