Calvary Cemetery Columbarium Information Sessions Planned
Phase One of the Calvary Cemetery Columbarium was dedicated May 25, 2015. The columbarium is on the
east side of the cemetery which is located on West Highway 10 between Verndale and Thurston Avenues.
Our parish cemetery is blessed to have an option for above ground burial of cremated remains of the body
with prayerful reverence and great dignity. Single and double niches (space for the holding of one or two
urns) in this beautiful granite building are available. Phase one is almost half sold. Many of the sales have
been “pre-need” – parishioners planning for their final wishes. Since the Vatican lifted the cremation ban in
1963, cremation has grown in popularity among the faithful. A columbarium offers another option besides
in-ground burial of the urn and traditional casket burials, also options at Calvary Cemetery.
Three options to learn more about the Columbarium will be offered next month: September 14 at 8:30 a.m.
or 6:30 p.m. in FCC 1 and 2; September 18, 9:35 a.m. in FCC 10 (this session will be held between the 8:30
and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Please consider attending one if you would like additional information and
answers to any questions you may have. Registration is not required for any of these sessions, however if you
plan to attend your reply to the parish office will help us provide space and information handouts for everyone. Private appointments for purchase may be set up anytime by calling the parish office.

"When you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the
blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you."
Today Jesus instructs us to be generous enough to serve others without
expecting repayment. At least, without expecting to be repaid in THIS
life. It's interesting that the Gospel concludes with Jesus' promise that if
we follow this teaching, we "will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous." In other words,
God will "repay" our
generosity on earth
by welcoming us into
heaven. Really, what
better
investment
could there possibly
be?
It can be tempting to
think of our money
as purely our own. We
work hard to earn it. Or we receive it from others who wanted US to have
it. Or luck came our way (and too bad for you that it didn't come your
way). We thus feel possessive of our money and often struggle with the
idea of giving it away or lending it without hope of being paid back (with
interest!). But today's Gospel challenges us with a different perspective.
In essence, Jesus tells us to use our money for the sake of others, not just
to assure our own earthly comfort. As difficult as this request may be, its
important to remember that Jesus honors the sacrifice! This is why he
promises repayment in heaven. He understands that it "costs" us a great
deal to part with the security of using our money for ourselves alone. He
understands that in caring for the poor, we risk putting ourselves in their
company.
But God's ways are not the ways of the world. Instead of investing everything in a bank, Jesus asks us to invest in the poor. After all, no bank on
earth can possibly provide the infinite rate of return that Jesus promises.

Mass of Creation
New Through-Composed Glory to God
The Mass of Creation, published in 1984, is the most well-known Mass
setting in the Catholic Church. That is why it is the Mass setting most
commonly used for funerals and weddings. When people gather from
several different churches for a funeral or a wedding, chances are best
that they will all know how to sing the parts for the Mass of Creation.
The Gloria, or Glory to God, is an ancient hymn modeled on the psalms
and canticles of the Bible. Set to simple melodies, it was originally a song
of the whole assembly. As elaborate musical settings were developed it
came to be sung by the choir alone. Today, at the encouragement of the
Church, assemblies have grown into singing the Glory to God again. As
St. Stephen’s grew into this, Glory to God settings with repeated refrains
to encourage participation were used. Then the assembly was encouraged to join in singing the verses as well as the refrains. Since the New
Roman Missal was implemented in 2011 there is a growing sense that
the hymn should be sung in its entirety from beginning to end without the interruption of repeated refrains, so that it’s meaning is a little
clearer. To that end composers have started to revise their Glory to God
settings to be through-composed. This means that the prayer is sung as
written in the New Roman Missal as one piece of music with no repeated
refrains.
Marty Haugen, the composer of the Mass of Creation, has recently revised the Mass of Creation Glory to God, and St. Stephen’s will begin
learning this new setting this fall. Marty describes the Revised Order of
the Mass as a “good opportunity to introduce a simpler, through-composed version.”
Have You Considered Spending Time in Prayer
Before the Blessed Sacrament?
All are welcome to spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.
We are in need of additional adorers Mondays at 1:00 a.m., Saturdays

Faith Formation
Nursery Childcare
Helpers Needed
Catechists Needed!
Over 500 children and youth, preschool through grade 10, will sign up
this fall to learn about the Catholic faith. You can help them come to
know and love Jesus and, more importantly, find out how much He loves
them by volunteering as a catechist or catechist assistant. As of this time,
over 160 of these children and young people have no catechist to teach
them. One of the most common comments we get from catechists is
that they learn as much - possibly even more - as their students! We provide all the training (nationally known speaker coming!), materials, and
support. Classes begin mid-September. For more information contact
Katie Gebhard at 763-712-7439 or [email protected].

The mission of Life Matters ministry is to empower our parish to be
a center of life, a parish of people
who understand important contemporary life issues and who
recognize the rights and needs
of those among us who are most
vulnerable. We do this though
prayer, education, and participation in activities that promote
reverence for life. Life Matters also
collaborates with other Catholic
area churches to move ahead the
cause for life by sharing buses to
events, knowledge of the issues,
speakers and other resources.

Pastoral Care
Please Pray for...
Imagine this!
Sr. Mary Anne Schaenzer, SSND
You have approached Mount Zion
and the city of the living God,
the heavenly Jerusalem,
and countless angels in festal gathering,
and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven,
and God the judge of all,
and the spirits of the just made perfect,
and Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant,
and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.
Hebrews 12:22-23
The author is comparing the demands of the Mosaic Covenant which
led to fear of God and threats of divine punishment – (in previous verses) – with direct access to God; we are God’s beloved children who have
Jesus as a mediator. And so we can say with the Psalmist (Ps 68:4-5):
The just rejoice and exult before God;
they are glad and rejoice.
Sing to God, chant praise to God’s name;
whose name is the LORD.
You Can Help WHO Feed Starving Children
Join the WHO (We Help Others) group the first Wednesday of the
month as we spend the morning packing food to help prevent children
from starving throughout the world. Meet us September 7 at 9:15 a.m. at Feed My Starving Children, 401 93rd Avenue NW in Coon Rapids. Thanks
to all who have responded in the past. We make a commitment for a
certain number and it is very important that we fulfill our obligation. If
you are able to help, please contact Gayl at 763-422-0024. Thank
you for considering this worthwhile cause. Hope to see you there!
Prayer Shawl Ministry
This ministry is one which extends God’s love to others through meditation and prayer while knitting or crocheting. Shawls are given in times
of illness or grieving, as well as during times of joy (pregnancy, adoption) or celebration (nursing mom, recovery and rehabilitation, special
anniversary or birthday, etc.).
We will meet Friday, September 9 at noon in the Archbishop Romero
Room. We warmly invite new members!
If you know of an individual who would be comforted by a shawl, please
contact the parish office at 763-421-2471. All names are kept confidential.

We have a difficult
time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return.
Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle
ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need
to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

Dear St. Stephen’s Community,
For many years, St. Stephen’s School has participated in the Minnesota Marathon for
Nonpublic Education. While this has been a wonderful way to raise money for the school,
we recognize that it is beneficial to look for new and exciting ways to present
fundraisers. As a way to raise funds for ALL religious education programs at St.
Stephen’s Church and School, we invite you to the first annual…
FALL FEST for EDUCATION
October 8, 2016 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
It will be a wonderful evening in the school’s west parking lot with live music, delicious
food, beer and hard cider, yard games, childcare carnival and more. As with all
fundraisers, the success of this event depends on the generosity of our entire
community. Here are some ways you can contribute:
• Donate a fabulous prize to be raffled off at Fall Fest. Examples include
vacation rentals, sport or event tickets, and power-sport vehicles (ATV,
snowmobile, boat, etc). We are open to new ideas…be creative! Consider
collaborating with friends! If you would like to contribute a raffle prize, please
contact Kelly Blair by September 9…phone (612) 414-9375 or email
[email protected].
• Donate bottles for the Bottle Pull, a fun game of chance for adults. We need all
kinds of bottles including but not limited to wine, alcohol, liqueurs, and mixers.
Bottles can be dropped off at the parish or school office OR at the Fall Fest table
in the Gathering Space after Mass starting September 24.
• Volunteer at Fall Fest. While we will need some adult volunteers, we are
counting on lots of help from our teens (ages 12-17). The Childcare Carnival will
be in the school’s cafeteria, and St. Stephen’s teens are encouraged to get their
service hours in by working at the carnival. Sign up to volunteer at the Fall Fest
table. Find us in the school lobby at your first faith formation class, at back-toschool night (St. Stephen’s School students) or in the Gathering Space after
Mass starting September 24.
• Spread the word. Fall Fest is the perfect occasion to invite your friends and
family to St. Stephen’s. All are welcome!
FALL FEST for EDUCATION is a tremendous opportunity to support one of St. Stephen’s
most important endeavors…
passing on our Catholic faith from one generation to the next.
Thank you for your support and generosity,

"Life Matters"
Life

te tocó a ti.
